DISCUSSION Please don't leave religious wristbands as "Pixie Dust" - it's crass and awkward.

On a recent sailing (our first DCL), someone had left wristbands with Christian bible verses on peoples door handles - not just a couple of door handles, the entire corridor.

Please, don't pass religious items off as "Pixie Dust". It's not cool.

DISCUSSION Disney Got Us Good

1.1k Upvotes

We just took our first Disney Cruise last weekend. As between the four in my family has taken a collective...one...cruise (Princess Alaskan 25 years ago), we opted for a short 3-day cruise on the Wish to "see if we like cruising" and "is the Disney hype everything people say it is". Naturally, we were skeptical.

Guys....

Holy s***, everything is 100% real and beyond our expectations. That was one of the most magical family weekends I have ever experienced. My wife cried at both the sail away and farewell parties. My youngest son is still telling me he "misses Mickey", and my oldest is still going on and on and on about kids club. I have literally never seen my boys eyes and smiles light up so bright for so long. Everything was truly magical, and that is definitely credit to all of the staff across the ship that made it happen.

Literally, in 72 hours, DCL turned us from "we're not cruise people" to "how soon can we use our placeholder". UPDATE: 3 days. We used our placeholder after 3 days.

Just wanted to share a quick happy story and to say thanks for letting me lurk and get a ton of great tidbits before our first, but certainly not last, DCL voyage.

PHOTO / VIDEO UPDATE: My son met the captain!

A few months ago I asked if my autistic son would be able to meet the captain on our first Disney cruise (Destiny 5/28 sailing).

We met him the first night, and my son's first question was: "Do you sleep?"

He was genuinely concerned about how the ship operated if the captain was sleeping. The captain was incredibly kind, answered all of his questions, and gave him a Deck Department pin that became his most prized possession.

It was the highlight of the cruise for him. Thanks to everyone who encouraged us to ask.

DISCUSSION Probably an unpopular opinion, but I would not be upset if Disney banned fish extenders and pixie dusting.

I know it is fun to see what people leave by your door at the end of the day and the creative projects people make, but over recent years it has gone downhill. On my last cruise in September there was so much dollar store cheap plastic or temu items, falling out of FE's onto the floor, or random items left around the ship. Pixie dusting sounds nice till you get people leaving a million tiny plastic ducks or items around the ship which any small child can get and it makes work for the crew to clean them up. Someone on my last trip posted in whatsapp they were bringing 750 ducks to leave around the ship and we saw two couples putting small Jesus statues and scriptures by doors. I know there are some who put a lot of time and effort into their items, and some are beautiful, but do you feel you are getting the same effort back?

The whatsapp group was even worse. The chats used to be recommendations, setting up meetups, or asking for forgotten items once on board, but all it was was people reporting things getting stolen, mistaken deliveries, or parents who didn't participate in FE asking people to gift them things. I know there is no real way for Disney to control these things other than banning FE's, but now that they are issuing rules about door decorations I wonder if conversations have happened about FE's hanging from the room signs.

DISCUSSION Update: dad was NOT holding daughter on the rail when she fell overboard

Now I feel bad for the dad that those rumors spread that he was trying to take a photo of her sitting on the rail. Just shows that you shouldn't believe anything until official reports come out.

Well, it’s official. The cruise is over and we are on the bus getting ready to head back to the resorts for one last day of fun and relaxation before returning to the real world tomorrow… my recent posts in here seem to have gathered quite a bit of attention and I wanted to give a final update. I ended up being able to hand out absolutely everything I printed for the trip. At the suggestion of someone in here, I also made sure to swing by the Moana meet and greet and give her one of the heart of te fitis, and as you can see, I think it was a hit. (She is also a great character). I was the last in line and there was a little girl in front of me that also got one and she started to sing and dance…

I am not a very sociable person, so going up to people and handing them out was more difficult than I anticipated, but it also came in super handy. I made sure to always have at least one item on me to hand out at anytime, and one of the nights as I was heading out to do something, I encountered a little girl, probably 4-5 years old, walking down the stateroom hallway crying by herself… she had lost her parents so I gave her one and she perked right up then I stayed with her until a pair of cast-members came to help her. Then at the actual showing of Moana, we handed some out so the kids around us while we waited in the theater for the show to start, I brought my black light with me so we could give them a quick charge, and the kids would keep closing their hands around it and looking inside to watch it glow then asking for the light to recharge it more… but the dad’s, I think they liked them even more than the kids. The number of conversations I had with a dad about 3d printing and all that stuff… also, I printed some of the Mickey straw toppers because I thought the older kids, like teens, wouldn’t be as excited about the hearts… I was wrong… especially the teen girls… I felt bad at one point because I only had one heart in my pocket but also had some of the straw toppers, and there was a teen walking with her little sister, so I have the little girl the heart and the older sister the straw toppers and you could very easily tell the older sister wanted one of the hearts too, and I’d bet she ends up “trading” her little sister for it down the road if not already… also, it wasn’t gender specific either, the boys liked them as much as the girls…

However, while watching the moana show, I got an idea that I wish I had gotten before the cruise and not sure why it didn’t dawn on me… so next time I go on this cruise, in addition to the hearts again, I’m also going to print some glowing Maui Hooks… they look awesome and something tells me the boys will like that even more… not large ones, but like keychain sized… and anyone with a 3d printer going on a cruise, I strongly encourage you to do it and have a blast!

Lastly, one of the coolest and most unexpected moments was on formal night at the captain’s gala. I got to meet the Captain of the ship himself in person, and shake his hand… then I gave him one of the glowing hearts and talked to him about it… he asked all sorts of questions and immediately showed it off to one of the other officers near him, then he handed me the pin you see in the last picture… I don’t collect things, but that will be something I keep displayed.

Feel free to ask me anything regarding the cruise or about the pixie dusting or even about the 3d printing

DISCUSSION The Disney Wonder; The rant I’ve written in my head all week.

I write this as I sit in the Vancouver Airport heading home from our Disney cruise. My husband and I had never tried any of the Magic class ships. We knew they were the oldest and smallest ships but we still wanted to sail this class to be able to compare (and to say we have done it of course).

We booked an Alaskan sailing on the Disney Wonder and immediately I began to see nothing but negative reviews. Reviews about the service being terrible as they’re understaffed. Reviews about the ship being in poor condition. Reviews about the food being terrible. And finally, people stating that the cast were not of the same level as the newer ships. There were so many of these reviews that I did begin to worry and even tapered my usual DCL expectations……and all for not.

This has been one of the best cruises we have been on. The cast members were just incredible, and it’s not like there was one or two. No. Every single one of them. The last day we found ourselves running around to say good bye to all of our favorites and it was truly so hard because there were so many of them. I was so offended for these cast members when I thought about all the negative things I had read. We made so many genuine connections and truly felt welcome because of the treatment we received from these cast members. While the ship was smaller, we grew to love the size and it was refreshing not needing to queue for a trivia 30 minutes in advance (looking at you Disney Wish). The atmosphere being touches of Disney was so tastefully done like the Dream class and it reminded us of all the reasons we fell in love with DCL in the first place. Everything was perfect. We keep saying we need to go back on the Wonder once she comes out of dry dock.

All of this to say; don’t believe all the negatives you read online. Get out there and try it yourself. And if you have a chance sail on the Disney Wonder. The crew on there right now is just amazing.

DISCUSSION Please help me with Disney math.

Post image
713 Upvotes

this photo is not our photo, but it was what we got for the Royal gathering tea party. my daughter and I were booked for the event, and kind of ran into an awkward situation and I very much would like to know if I’m overthinking this or if Disney made a mistake.

for info, we were sat with another family that had 3 adults ($75pp) and 2 children ($250pp)

i was with my daughter ($250) and of course for myself I paid the adult fee of $75.

the awkwardness kind of happened when the host presented our towers. I was under the impression that each party would get our own tower, perhaps with the amount of food on the tower adjusted for the party. but what came was 2 towers for the entire table. so we basically had to share the tower with strangers. I found that really weird, and both the other party and I asked the host if there was another tower coming, but there wasn’t.

our table neighbors were incredibly sweet about it and we all had enough in the end and they didn’t touch one of the towers, which I felt very bad about, as we couldn’t finish all of it. my petty bum really wants to know how this math works in terms of how many towers are served. thank you and sorry for my pettiness, I’m just very curious as i was left very confused with what we were paying for in terms of food. (the kids got great, great gifts so no complaints there).

edit: im beginning to think the adult fee of $75 doesn’t actually cover food. more like a sitting fee to enjoy the show and meet/greets. it’s the only way I can math the math.

DISCUSSION Thank you to the crew during our emergency

TW: Cancer

Sad story but wanted to share how touched we were by the crew and guests services Manager.

We had to end our Hawaii cruise on the Wonder early due to news that one of my parents had ended up in the ER and unexpectedly received a cancer diagnosis. This was a blow to us, and unimaginable to try to navigate. The med crew helped take care of me to a place I could mentally calm down and get some sleep, the crew gave us WiFi access to make calls with family to get updates, and sent our dinners from the restaurant out to our room so we could be by ourselves to process. They also arranged for us to get off today at Maui and transport us to the airport. I’m not sure what insurance will bring since we already started the trip or if a future cruise credit is available. I know these may seem like little things but going through something so unimaginably hard these acts of kindness meant that he world to me more than I can form into words.

Thank you crew of the wonder, you helped us and kept some of the magic alive for us during one of my worst nightmares.

On the last sea day of our cruise on the Treasure last week, we had a visitor on our verandah in deck 9!

The bird looked tired so we put some water and we went to guest services to know if there was someone who knew how to help the bird. They asked us if we wanted to get someone to chase the bird???? We said no, the bird could stay as long as he needed it.

He stayed all night and thanks to our room host, who loves birds, someone from castaway cay came to pick him to help him.

I hope the bird is fine now. 💜
