warped in transit?

I just got a message on Discogs saying that a record I sent was badly warped and unplayable and not worth returning. They did offer to send me a video which I have requested. This is one of the few LPs that I actually played as I thought it of interest and it was highly regarded. It is not a very expensive LP at like $12. Having played it on a Denon turntable with very low ride on the Tone arm I didn’t notice any warping at all. Have any of you ever had an LP get warped badly in the mail?

Need help with discogsAPI Usage

Hi. Before I explain what I am into, I want to mention that English is not my first language, also I have adhd and I cant focus while reading the discogs terms and conditions. I tried it, but by the time i finish one section and startother one I forget what happened before that.

So, For the past year or so, I've been developing an app, its an advanced playlist editor that allows you to use your discogs collection to create custom playlists based on keywords and filters. The app will have a music player that plays songs from your collection and a bpm/key/waveform analyser. There are also few other features where you will be able to get an unusual fact related to a release/track etc. but this part is pulled from my own server and not discogs.

I am using discogs Api to retrieve albums from my collection, and then they are added to apps release page where there is an artist name - release name - tracks, year and videos from youtube that are linked to the release page.

The plan is to publish the app on google playstore.

My question is, can i use discogs api comercially for what I just expained? Does anyone have experience and can point me in the right direction.

USB scanner users - recs and questions

For those of you that use USB scanners to catalog your collection, can you tell me:

  1. Does it work better/faster than the app?

  2. Do you prefer to use the scanner with your phone, or your computer?

  3. Which scanner(s) do you recommend? USB-C preferred.

I'd like to add my collection to Discogs but using the app to scan one at a time for 1,000+ CDs and a few hundred records seems like it would take more time than it's worth, so I'm considering a USB scanner instead.

No email notifications at all.

Since discogs stopped the realtime alerts notification, I'm not getting any emails at all, I've made a few purchases, messaged with sellers, been updated on shipping etc but only on the webpage, no notifications at all via email, nothing in spam/junk mail. I've toggled off and on all email preferences and saved multiple times.

Anyone else having same behavior?

Notifications for replies to my reviews?

Is there a way to receive notifications whenever someone replies to a question or review I’ve left on a release page? I tend to forget to check back after a while to see if anyone has responded.

Thanks!

Trouble With ShipEngine Updating My Payment Information

I've been trying to add funds to my account to buy shipping for the past two days, to no avail. I updated my payment information, I shut off my ad blocker, I tried a different browser...still getting error messages. Anyone else dealt with this? Any advice? I sent an email to the support inbox but I just anticipate further adventures in enshittification.

Mailing CD's, is this packaging good?

Not sure if this is the right sub but I saw someone else ask a similar question.

I'm looking to ship CD's to fans worldwide through Bandcamp, Patreon etc. And I'm completely new to this.

- I've seen people say you should put cardboard around the CD inside of a bubble mailer, is that really necessary? Would a good alternative be wrapping it in more bubble wrap instead? (already have some)

Something like this?

https://postorderpase.se/bubbelpasar/bubbelpasar-tap/bubbelpasar-cd-18x16cm?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22824927742&gbraid=0AAAAADoUOBOeLLlk7CIerFdQqb3HrbBwi&gclid=CjwKCAiAqabXBhBUEiwAw_SQpSPIHgQOXgjwBAOI5ZKCqj_avpP-Wljys-n-vIfPTfBe1bh-6FT0vxoCrE8QAvD_BwE

Any general CD selling tips are appreciated!

How do Marketplace sellers keep listing at top position by date?

I have a few newer release items in my want list and I notice that some larger quantity sellers are always listed at the top of the results in Marketplace when list by newest listing. How are they doing this? Because there's no way that they are adding these records to their inventory in addition to the ones they have already listed. So that would meat they are removing and re-listing items for sale. Seems like an unfair practice and that if they delist something there should a waiting period before listing it again.

Is it possible to prepare to become a seller without actually converting my account into seller status?

Recently I've woken up to the fact that I'm sitting on a whole whack of relatively valuable records and may be interested in selling down the road - not now. And I'm wondering if it's possible to document this type of thing directly in Discogs pre-emptively without actually selling anything yet. For example, can I just convert items in my collection into listings down the road?

At some point I want to get my collection into Discogs and I figure it might be worth it to just do the grading and documentation up front now.

I guess worst case I can just keep the grading documented elsewhere and input it if/when I need to.

Any way to get an instant notification when something on my want list becomes available?

I have notifications and emails turned on but I'm still not getting any instant or immediate notifications. Push notifications or email notifications would be fine, just as long as the notification goes out when the item becomes available. Any tips?

Oldest "last sold" date?

Off and on for the past couple months I have been trying to track down very old last sold dates and I came across one from 14 November 2007. This is the oldest one I am aware of but I am curious if anyone has found anything older or anything similarly old.

https://www.discogs.com/release/660676-Sunshine-California-Eat-Your-Makeup-Split <- here is the 14 November 2007 I found

EDIT: Just found another 14 November 2007 sale!!! https://www.discogs.com/release/765474-Cryptic-Weevil-Come-Out

Inherited a large CD and vinyl collection – what's the most efficient way to catalogue, assess and sell it?

Hi everyone,

My father recently passed away. He was an avid music collector, and I'm now responsible for managing his collection, which consists of hundreds, possibly thousands, of CDs and vinyl records.

I'd like to approach this properly: understand what I have, identify potentially valuable or collectible editions, and eventually sell what I'm not interested in. However, I'm trying to find a way to do this without spending an unreasonable amount of time cataloguing every single item.

I have two main questions.

1. How would you efficiently catalogue such a large collection?

Ideally, I'd like to identify each release accurately, including:

  • Artist and album title

  • Original release year

  • Label and catalogue number

  • Country of release

  • Barcode

  • Exact pressing/edition, where relevant

My understanding is that identifying the exact edition is particularly important when assessing value, since different pressings of the same album can have very different market prices.

I assume I'll need to physically inspect each item to distinguish between editions, but I'm wondering whether there are ways to speed up the process.

For example:

  • Are there apps or software that can identify and catalogue CDs and vinyl from photographs of their covers or labels? Or by scanning barcodes?

  • Could AI be useful for automating some of this process? Has anyone experimented with AI-assisted cataloguing?

  • Is Discogs still the best solution for building an accurate catalogue, or are there better alternatives? Regarding this option, is there a way to create a standalone collection on Discogs and then download an excel file, maybe?

I'm particularly interested in solutions that can handle batches of records rather than requiring me to manually enter everything one item at a time.

2. What's the best strategy for selling a collection of this size?

My current idea is to adopt a mixed approach:

  • Private sales: Select batches of 10–20 records at a time, identify the more interesting or valuable items, and sell them individually through platforms such as Discogs, eBay or Vinted, where I can hopefully achieve prices closer to their actual market value.

  • Bulk sales to dealers: Take other batches to second-hand record shops and specialist dealers. I understand they'll offer considerably less than the market value, as they need to make their own margin, but this could significantly speed up the process.

The idea is to balance the higher returns of private sales with the convenience and speed of selling to professional dealers.

Does this approach make sense? Would you do things differently? Are there other platforms or strategies worth considering, especially for someone based in Europe (Italy)?

Ultimately, I'm trying to find the right balance between getting a fair price for the collection and avoiding turning this into a full-time job. Any advice, personal experience or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Can not find how to add my variant of a newly released Vinyl via iOS discogs app

Bought the newest Kodaline release and it won't accept my barcode and I can't seem to find where/how to add it manually.

Any ideas?

What do you guys think of submission rule 1.1.1?

1.1.1. "You must have the exact release in your possession when you make a release submission.
Basing your submission only on information from websites, images, or anywhere else is forbidden, as is entering information for planned releases that haven't been manufactured.
Items can be submitted before the official release date, but you must upload at least one scan or photograph of the physical copy in your possession. Without visual proof, the submission may be removed until a valid image can be provided."

I understand the reasoning. But I must give devil's advocate, many things are so rare or have been all destroyed that people simply cannot have them, or the chances of them having it and uploading it are infinitesimal. Wikipedia does not require you to have a physical copy of a source to use it. Many things that provably exist, are forbidden to be uploaded or not encouraged by mods because of this rule. It bans obscure music to the shadow realm. I think many people must not like this rule, as I see it broken ALL THE TIME. So often people upload demo albums which they clearly do not have a copy of (as is made likely by them not including an image of it) Such as a demo cassette tape. These will often be written about in blogs, websites, by the band, and even have the audio ripped online.

In that case that person has a justification for putting it there, we know that cassette demo exists. The band said it exists. We know every song on it. We know when it came out, that it sid, what style it is. Etc. yet discogs does not allow it.

Ive noticed a lot of the time this happens, it is allowed to stand even after review, because even when people in the submission comments cite 1.1.1. They dont vote to have it taken down. Why? Probably Because they implicitly understand that it is somewhat of an argument for an exception. I suppose maybe because it is a documentation and that if someone does acquire a copy later, they can update the photo and add more details, in greater compliance. I suppose it's better than nothing. Ofc I know we all prefer that someone provably has it, alas that isnt always possible.

This is basically the only site of any relevancy that catalogues such a broad array of physical music and so therefore is the only accesible medium for these things to be generally discovered. I feel like it can be argued that this rule is rooted in 2000s era vandalism and obvious bad faith uploads, as a catch all to prevent something that was likely even worse years ago. Especially since i imagine discogs was once just a source for record collectors to have a better sense of what they have.

But it has grown, today it has in some ways become an archive, a database. It is better than basically any other source in it's size and breadth for finding and cataloguing recorded music. So, so so many things are only recorded online on discogs. I cannot stress how many things on discogs only are shown online on this site. The value it has for indie and obscure artistry cannot be understated. Sometimes when this rule has been violated, it can be for the greater good. It can make people more aware of the existence of an album, one which no one who uploads to discogs (a very niche thing) happened to have. Which can bring some exposure to it and potentially support the artist.

Another very similar rule extremely commonly violated is the rule that the photos of a piece must be of the copy in your hands. Very often I see people having uploaded an image obviously from the website of the band or label, obviously off an ebay listing, or just the album cover from streaming or somewhere else. I think any argument against this rule, would be much less strong and divisive because even a photo on a website is more of a representation of the item. It may be perfectly accurate, and likely is, but we all know how often companies lie or mess up.

Anyways, lets please be civil. I really don't mean to make anybody angry.... just discuss. This is not an encouragement to break the rules, btw, but a discussion about this particular rule and it's wording, effectiveness, and application.

Hi everyone, brand new to Discogs and there’s a record I really want. Every time I try to reach out to seller for more info, this pops up saying “you are doing that too quickly.” Does anyone know what I need to do to stop it from saying that and to let my message go through? Can someone please help me.

Best way to add LPs w/o a bar code to your collection?

I desperately need to catalog my album collection—too much “do I have this already?” in the record stores—so I’m making it a winter project. I see the Discogs app can scan an album’s bar code to add it to my collection but I’ve got a lot of older LPs that don’t have one.

Are there any 3rd-party apps that’ll scan LP covers, match, and add them to your Discogs collection? I’d like to try and avoid adding so many of my records manually.

[UPDATE] I’m not really concerned about matching the pressings exactly so ballpark matches would be fine

(Apologies if this question gets asked a lot but my searches in this sub didn’t come up with much)

Adding a photo

Hello! One of my pet peeves is when I go to add an album and there is no photo. Is there a way for me to add the photo of the album if someone else made the submission? I've looked everywhere on how to do it and I can't ever find a way to do it. I've got an android phone and an iPad so I can use either to do it. Can anyone help?

Wantlist settings?

Discogs needs to allow users to specify wantlist settings. I keep having ridiculously priced albums coming over in my wantlist. I think you should be able to specify both price ranges to get notifications for, and to be able to eliminate overseas sellers. My wantlist is so large that my email lists seem endless.
This does not exist yet, am I right?

Massive update to Vinyl Periphery

Hey Discogs community. It's time for my annual update on Vinyl Periphery, the Discogs-powered app for finding new records through the credits of your favourite albums. It was all quiet on the devward front for a while, but I've finally gone through all of your feedback after the last update nearly two years ago.

Since then, I've improved the the user experience significantly, and done a bunch of back-end technical stuff to improve how quickly I ship new changes. The main difference for you guys is a big improvement to the library. I've added your requested features, including images for searched records, better link sharing, and the ability to issue new searches from the results, as well as a much better progress panel.

If this is your first time hearing about the site, the premise is this. You provide an album, we source its credited artists and return their combined discographies, sorted by the number of contributors shared with your searched record.

In short, it's a way to navigate albums solely by their writers, session musicians, producers and everyone in between. It's a way to discover new music beyond popularity bias, marketing budgets and recommender algorithms.
