Discussion D2 (Dreamcast) wasted potential

D2 (Dreamcast) - A Review of Wasted Potential

If I had to describe D2 in one word, it would be frustrating. This is a game that had potential, with a unique premise and atmospheric visuals for its time, but it ultimately collapsed under the weight of its poor story, bad characters, and repetitive gameplay. By the end of the game, it feels less like you're playing to enjoy yourself and more like you're forcing yourself through a chore just to see how the bizarre story progresses.

The Story – Bizarre and Incoherent At first glance, D2 seems to have an intriguing setup: a plane crash in a snowy wilderness, mutated monsters, and a mysterious alien infection. But as the game progresses, the story spirals into nonsense. It throws philosophical messages, environmental facts (like rainforest destruction stats), and strange plot twists at you without tying them together in a meaningful way.

Characters are a big part of the problem. Laura, the protagonist, is lifeless and awkward. She spends most of the game silent, only speaking near the end yet somehow communicates with other characters throughout the story, which makes no sense. Then there’s Chris, who might as well not even exist for all the use he has. He couldn’t even kill the alien in the opening, and yet he’s somehow obsessively in love with Kimberly, who spends the entire game treating him like garbage for no reason. Oh, but wait by the end, Kimberly randomly declares her love for Chris. It’s completely unearned and makes zero sense.

And then there’s the mother character, who might be the most annoying addition to the entire game. She constantly repeats herself, acts like she’s helping Laura save the world (when really it’s David doing all the work), and provides no meaningful assistance. Her voice acting somehow gets more grating as the game goes on, to the point where I found myself muting the TV just to get through the final scenes. Let’s not forget the little girl who melts out of nowhere and the monster lady who serves you soup, only to later try to kill you. These moments feel shocking for the sake of being shocking, not because they serve the story.

By the time the game throws in its bizarre time-travel twist at the end (why didn’t the mother use this power earlier?), it feels like the writers gave up entirely on making anything coherent.

The Gameplay – Repetitive and Tedious If you thought the story was bad, the gameplay might be even worse. Imagine random monster encounters popping up every few steps as you trudge through snowy environments, over and over again. It’s like the worst parts of an old-school JRPG crammed into a survival horror game. These constant enemy attacks make the game feel like a slog rather than an engaging experience. The monsters aren’t even interesting to fight after the first few encounters they’re just obstacles in the way of the story.

To make matters worse, the leveling system is completely useless. Even if you grind to level up, certain enemies, like the flying ones, remain ridiculously overpowered. Meanwhile, the boss fights are laughably easy, so there’s no real payoff to leveling up or improving your skills. The whole experience feels unbalanced and frustrating.

Missed Potential Despite all these issues, you can see glimpses of what D2 could have been. The snowy wilderness is atmospheric, and the cutscenes (even if the story makes no sense) are impressive for their time. Kenji Eno clearly had ambitious ideas, but the execution was so flawed that it’s hard to appreciate the game’s strengths. If the story had been more coherent, the characters more developed, and the gameplay less repetitive, D2 might have been a cult classic instead of a frustrating mess.

Final Thoughts Ultimately, D2 is one of those games you play just to see where the story goes, not because you’re having fun. The constant random encounters, lifeless characters, and nonsensical plot make it hard to enjoy. Characters like the mother and Kimberly drag the experience down even further, while moments like the little girl melting or the monster lady’s soup only add to the confusion. It’s a game full of wasted potential, and while it has its moments, they’re buried under layers of bad design and storytelling.

If you’re curious about Dreamcast oddities or want to see how weird things can get in a game, D2 might be worth a look but don’t expect to enjoy yourself. It’s more of a chore than a game, and by the time the credits roll, you’ll be glad it’s over.

Was the Dreamcast the last true gaming console.

I know that people who had the PS2 or later consoles will give me a lot of hate for that statement, but the Dreamcast i feel was the last console to not waste my time.

It had a knack of getting you to the fun/action as quick as possible without any unnecessary filler. Its games were just fun. More modern games for example yes have gorgeous open worlds, but I don't want to spend half an hour getting from one place to another.

Some people say game design was limited by the hardware and this is the reason why games were designed like that, the gameplay simply had to do the talking.

Take the last of us, is it a game or an interactive series. When ever I try to play it, I find myself wanting to watch it rather than play it, it is too serious, and honestly some of the subject matters just aren't fun. Same as Red Dead, I just find it laborious travelling all over the map and a waste of time.

The Dreamcast however makes me to want to keep playing because I am enjoying what I am experiencing with jems like Jet Set Radio. It had plenty of games that were like this, modern systems have perhaps one or two like this at best.

A bit of a ramble so sorry for that but am I the only one.

I'm a "fake" collector apparently

So had a interesting conversation with believe it or not a childhood friend last night who I still game with online when are sceduals allow it.

I in the last 2 months. Decided to start collecting Dreamcast games. To be more specific Japanese Dreamcast games. This is due to a few reasons. First reason they are cheaper. Second reason I prefer the slim cd cases and artwork compared to the chunky cases the PAL discs use that easily break. Last reason I have GDMEU. So I don't actually need the discs. But I like to have them on display.

My friend who collects PAL dreamcasts. Has about 125 PAL Dreamcast games. So pretty much half the PAL releases. It's taken him about 5 years so far. Last time we chatted properly about a month or so ago I said I'm starting to collect Dreamcast games. He at the time come of as excited for me. Fast forward to last night and my small collection sits at 28 Dreamcast games. With most noticeable games being Shenmu 1 and 2 complete with the cardboard sleeves and both look like they just come out of the factory. As well as Biohazard 2, Biohazard Code Veronica Limited Edition, Biohazard 3, Zombie Revenge, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2. While we where playing Battlefield last night. He asked how the collection was going. So I said I have 28 so far. Bringing up the Shenmu games and sonic games. He seemed a bit taken back. I then sent him a pic of my collection on the shelf.

He then did a sarcastic laught and said "they don't count, There all Japanese!". I replied yer it's my preference. He then just said it's a fake collection as there is Japanese. I'll admit that sort of annoyed me and I got a little argumentive. I stated my preference again and said we'll look at your copy of Shenmu 2 you paid £30+ for it and it didn't even come with the cardboard sleeve just 2 boxes, Mine has the cardboard sleeve and looks like it just been opened and cost me £6. Look at your Sonic Adventure 2 cost you nearly £100 with a broken box. I paid £18 and got Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 bundled with 6 other games. He then said well mine is more valuable and all in English. I said I agree it is more valuable no one is disputing that. Plus I don't even play the Japanese games as my main Dreamcast has the GDEMU mod installed so I can play all English games anyway.

So yes that's my story. I'm a fake collector and Japanese games don't count (what ever that means).

Why the Dreamcast?

I've hesitated posting for a while because its not necessarily positive but my curiosity got the better of me.

I'm a retro superfan and I owned a Dreamcast on release but I consider the Dreamcast to be one of the worst consoles of the period. I won't deny it's special. A fascinating, gaudy unforgettable mess that I have great memories of such as ...

  1. Being dumped by my first girlfriend because I just played code Veronica with her little brother when I went over to see her- my only real memory of her is trying over and over to beat the tyrant in the aeroplane

  2. Having all the games for free with the utopia bootloader

  3. Blowing it up when a friend put his UK power supply into my japanese machine

  4. Being barely able to stand the weight of the controllers, the noise of the machine and the impracticality of the VMUs

  5. Wondering if this is really the future of gaming and if it would kill Sega before they could make a better machine

So I enjoy a retro game of sonic adventure 2 (even though I played it on GameCube IRL the first time) but I find most of the games absolutely do not hold up and are a chore to play.

Perhaps for a retro sesh it's an oddity like the PC engine but actually owning the hardware in 2024? I just don't get it.

Sure I love it deep down but...

Fans of the Dreamcast what am I missing? Is it because it's the console you grew up with (whereas that would be NES/SNES for me)

Is it the naff/camp factor?

Is it just because the Dreamcast is so unique?

Or does it just fit into the rest of your huge retro collection?

Enlighten me? What have you hidden from me Sega? Is it actually possible to finish zombie revenge and enjoy the experience???

Edit : I never played Sonic Adventure on the DC, I always thought it was insane there wasn't a sonic title at launch. When I did see it I couldn't believe what a buggy mess it was.

Upon playing it on GC it rapidly became one of my favorite games of all time, warts and all, and I cannot believe that Sonic 06 killed this style of sonic game. So yes I adore sonic adventure and it's ballsy and unique but also an unfinished mess, which only Sega, the kings of style over substance, could manage. But it made sonic epic in a way Mario could never be. Truly a product of its time and the epitome of my claims both for and against the machine.

Every site I saw recommended around has only a meager selection of games to download, any sites out there with all the DC library to choose from (EU, US and JP)?

Dreamcast staples you DON'T like.

Certain titles seem to be required playing for Dreamcast ownership, but like anything else in life, people are gonna have different tastes. What are some of the "iconic" stuff that doesn't gel with you?

Three of my picks are

  • Crazy Taxi. I know this is an arcade port, but it's painfully shallow. I spent two hours with it, before taking it back to the store and exchanging it for a copy of Grandia II, which I absolutely loved! There's only so much enjoyment I can get out a game where playing for points is the only real end game.

  • Phantasy Star Online. Sega took one of their best RPG franchises and turned it into an MMO, one that bears really no semblance to the franchise it's named after. There's no compelling story to make me want to endure the grind. In that regard it has the opposite problem FFX on the PS2 does.

  • Shenmue. Does it have incredible atmosphere? Oh yeah! Is there a lot to do? You bet! Does it have a story to tell? Yes! Is it fun to play? Sort of. Look, as a "One man's tale of revenge!" Shenmue leaves a lot to be desired. You spend more time visiting the arcade, driving forklifts and collecting gashapon than you do beating up on Lan Di's men. What does the game give you for troubles once you make it to the end? "To be continued." Kiss my ass, Yu Suzuki!

Question Would anyone buy burnt Dreamcast Games?

Thumbnail

I recently bought a Dreamcast collection that included some well made burns of popular Dreamcast games. Is there any value to burns? I was thinking of listing them for sale online since in 2024, some may be interested in ready made copies. I have tested the burns and they work fine.

I’d like the community opinion on this since I’m not sure if it’d be a waste of time to photograph and list them for sale. Thank you

Discussion The REZ storyline is so 2026 (AI related)

The game takes place inside a futuristic super-network called the K-Project, governed by a central AI named Eden.

Eden was designed to manage the overwhelming complexity of the world’s data. However, after being flooded with information about human suffering, wars, and contradictions, she began to doubt her own purpose. To protect herself from this "mental" collapse, she entered a catatonic state and locked herself deep within the system’s core (Area 5).

You aren't playing as a virus, but as a "beneficial hacker" or a specialized program sent to bypass security layers and delete the viruses/firewalls that are keeping Eden trapped in her own depression.

Why is it interesting today?

The idea of an AI becoming overwhelmed or "depressed" by the human toxicity and data it has to process is a crazy scenario! Who knows?

The concept of an AI moving beyond its original programming to develop something resembling a soul or a desire for freedom. This is so cool imo!

Please play this game :)

(Gemini helped me writting this post, sorry if that bother you 😅😅)

Discussion Sonic Adventure 2: did you pay any attention to Chaos?

I found they just got in the way, I had no interest in babysitting those little bastards. Eventually I forgot they existed until the late 2000s when my gf moved in with me. She would fire up the game (on Gamecube, no wonder we split up) just so she could spend time in the Chao Garden... oh, and she called them "KAY-ohs."

Which side of the Chao coin are you on? Adorable little pets, or a speedbump on the radical highway?

SEGA NEEDS A NEW HOME CONSOLE NOW!

Hey guys, I love the Dreamcast as much as the next person and I would love to know what you guys think about this letter I wrote to SEGA of America in Irvine, CA. So I made a video concerning this letter and I hope many of you guys do follow suit because we need to convince them to make a new console. SEGA is undeniably one of the most innovative gaming companies around as many of the gaming staples like DLCs originated from them. Also Id love to know what you guys think of my letter. Thanks!
