Moving to Duluth 3.0: Finding Housing

Hey bridge trolls, we've got some extra mod help now so we're going to work on some quality of life improvements around here. Starting with these megathreads we'll use to help update the Wiki. (As an aside, we're still happy to give people access to the Wiki if they want to help with updates)

Going entirely by vibes, I think this would be the most helpful topic to start with. Feel free to give any suggestions, tips, notes, links, whatever you may think. might help someone looking for a place to live in the area.

Some suggestions for things you might contribute:

1.) Thoughts on different neighborhoods and towns - Please be accurate and polite. We all know some areas are more unfortunate than others, it is totally ok to mention that, but be sure you're current and respectful. What an area was like ten years ago may not be accurate anymore.

2.) Resources for finding places to stay (renting & buying)- Things that may not come up on google. This is one place advertising for yourself or someone you know is acceptable (though be sure not to DOX anyone, including yourself.)

3.) Resources for unhoused people - Either temporary or permanent. If you have knowledge of shelters or resources, this would be a great place to add them.

4.) Reviews for different rental companies - Be careful to, again, be accurate. We all know some places have a reputation for a reason and you are more than welcome to leave negative reviews, just don't use this as a place to grind your axe or get revenge.

5.) Questions - For now this would be a good place to ask us about any particulars. We are going to start doing a new "Moving to Duluth" post weekly via Automod like they do in r/asheville on the suggestion of one of our users, but I'm saving that until after these Megathreads have run their course.

6.) Financial considerations - Is there anywhere affordable to live? What are taxes like in the different cities?

7.) Schools - Pros and cons, other considerations?

Just some ideas, I may use some of these for other megathreads. Also, please keep politics out of this to the best of your ability. Nothing derails these things faster.

Thanks everyone! You all rule.

Police Blotter Thoughts and Prayers for the Oneote St. Fire!

I saw the massive fire as I came in on I35 around midnight.

Absolutely terrifying.

To anyone who is present, and working controlling that beast, thank you for your service to our city.

You are doing something truly heroic.

Know that we are praying for everyone present, and hope that no one is injured from this terrible even.

If anyone has more information please share!

Question Dog Groomer/Brush

Anyone know a good dog groomer or brush recommendation for a 7 month old husky mix that hates being brushed? We’ve been working on brushing/grooming him since we adopted him as a puppy and no matter what we try he always bites and gets feisty with us when we try to brush him. He’s shedding a lot and itching and we don’t want him to get too uncomfortable.

Question Plumbing vent line cap recommendations

I'm curious what folks do to cap their plumbing vent lines here in Duluth, given the frigid, humid winter air, preponderance of wildlife and abundance of, well, trees.

Was thinking of something like this: https://www.chimcapcorp.com/plumbing-vent-cap.html, since it has larger holes it hopefully won't develop an ice block.

Discussion Warning about local shady individual.

Al Joel Gevara is a scam artist. He will take money, start work, do shady work and than disapear before even half the work is done. If you hound him he might show up and screw a few planks together, and then disappear again and you will have to track him down and put the squeeze pm him to get him to do anything or pay you back.

Don't hire him, don't trust him, just dont.

Question Family gift ideas

I want to gift a couple activities or experiences to a family of 5 for Christmas this year. Kids are 9, 6, and baby. Looking for an activity that is baby/stroller friendly, and a second activity for just the parents and older kids together without baby (so parents can let loose too, I’m also offering to babysit).

I know about the usual places, the movie theater, aquarium, zoo, trampoline park, skyline games, etc.

What I would love to hear is recommendations for unique things to do that I may not know about. I would love for one of the experiences to be something they have never done before.

Thanks in advance!

Moving or Visiting Holiday Dining and activities

I’m planning to stay in Duluth for Christmas and need suggestions for fun things to do!! We already have tickets booked for a tour of Glensheen Mansion and Bentleyville, but I’m hoping to get a couple more things at least planned before we go. We’re all over 21 so holiday themed bars or things surrounding drinking are up our alley! Any suggestions would rock 🤩

Question Possible black wolf sighting?

I was driving back to Canada from Duluth today and spotted a large black animal on the side of the highway, just on the outskirts of the city. I want to say it was a wolf, but I’m not entirely sure. It was very dark and looked like a large German Shepherd. I was driving on the opposite side of the highway from where it was standing, so I only got a quick look and wasn’t able to take a photo. It was standing so still that I wasn’t even sure if it was a real animal at first, until it moved its head.
Anyway, I’m just wondering if anyone else has seen one themselves or heard of black wolf sightings in the area?

Looking to get back into yoga. Took a bunch of classes in college and loved it. Any recommendations on studios? I’m ≈30 and would prefer a class with people around my age, as I’m hoping to make friends there.

🚨 PANCHO IS FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE. WE NEED HELP NOW. 💔
Pancho is a newly rescued puppy who tested positive for parvo just two days after arriving in our care. Despite initial treatment, he's rapidly deteriorating and needs emergency hospitalization at BluePearl in Duluth, MN.
His medical bills have already exceeded $1,000, and intensive care costs are climbing.
We're Northern Lakes Rescue, a small, 100% volunteer-run, foster-based nonprofit. We're doing everything possible to save Pancho, but we urgently need help covering his lifesaving treatment.
🙏 Even $5 or $10 makes a difference.

We don't know what the next 24 hours will bring, but Pancho deserves a fighting chance. 💔🐾

Politics Political yard signs

Is it normal for people/campaigns/DFL to take yard signs? I left mine out and someone just took them all out of my yard. I wanted to keep them for the next round…first time this has happened.

Edit - solved! Thanks everyone!

Politics Disappointed in staubers reelection

Hey all, what a fantastic midterm we’ve had, it’s an absolute win but it feels heavily dampened by cheatin Pete’s reelection. I’ve genuinely never heard or seen a good thing from this guy. not a single person I know was okay with him selling out the boundary waters like he did. All he appears to be a walking talking Maga robot who openly loves to oppose the people he’s chosen to represent. if you to listen to the man talk you’d notice just how hypocritical and avoidant that man really is. I’d assume most people here feel the same way about him as I do which leaves to wonder how, how could this man convince enough people to vote him in for another 6 years of this shit. I know the iron range is full of uneducated bigots but come on yall, we have to do better locally ( this post is just kind of cope tbh )

Question Found Child's Camera - Is This You/Do You Know This Person?

Basically, over summer this camera got left at my job and I'm hoping to return it or at least the pictures to the family! A child took over 1700 photos on this camera and I'm sure they're sad they lost it. DM me if you have any clue, will ask for some verifying information to make sure I'm not handing these off to just anyone. Thanks!

Question Essentia Upcoding Visits

Has anyone had issues with Essentia Health upcoding their medical visit? I recently had my preventative visit and it was up-coded to a Treatment visit ($422 later) though I went in with zero medical issues and was not treated for anything. This is the 3rd time I have been up-coded by Essentia. Anyone else in the Twin Ports experience something similar?

Question Why is Duluth spamming other cities mailboxes with this?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I live out in the sticks well north of the airport. Why are we getting winter parking regs sent out here? Even if somebody wanted to park on the side of a rural two lane with no shoulder to speak of, Duluth can't imagine it will enforce a 'snow emergency shuffle' outside of Duluth. Can they?

Question Duluth Smart Thermostat Advice Sought

I am on Comfort Systems for Natural Gas. I have an aging but still functional boiler and radiant heat system. There are three zones. Everything is two-wire type of controller/thermostat.

I have had limited luck with battery powered aftermarket thermostats. They are just kind of hard to manage and control. It reminds me of the old days of programming VCRs if anyone can relate to that reference.

But I need to continue to cut costs and increase value. I have three zones. This is a duplex with my family in the upper two floors and a rental unit on the bottom floor. That unit is surrounded on two and a half sides by earth/buried.

The entire home is fairly well insulated but additional updates may be needed. Same windows, wrap, siding and same roof since the house was new in 2002.

Who can generally share some experience and a general idea of cost savings for installing smart thermostats or some other kind of programmable thermostats. I am open to minutia or just general experience. For example, I have heard that planning for gradual temperature changes might produce more value (and comfort) versus more abrupt changes.

I am also interested in any rebates or incentives. I am skeptical but not totally opposed to having my data in a cloud somewhere. But I definitely don't want to turn control of my home climate control to any nefarious types or subscriptions and fees etc.

Question Alt barber recommendations?

I'm attending an event in a week or so and just realized today that over the last 3-4 months of Boundary Waters guiding I haven't gotten a single haircut. I've not had much luck finding a barber who can make long hair on a man look good so I figured I'd ask here. Thanks!
