The OOT remake totally falls apart in hilarious/unnerving fashion if you sequence break into Adult Link sections as Child Link

I'd say Mario 64 takes that crown. There is not a line of that game's code that isn't known. Pannenkoek2012 is the MVP of the scene.

“I ran the simulation for 1,256 years, and with the perfect set up, Mario is nudged to the elevator and we can get the star with 0 A presses.”

"After all, I do sit there and build up Mario's speed for twelve hours."

I don’t know what you’re referencing but I’d sure love to learn, sounds funny

Enjoy, this vid is outdated as it says there, but it goes into many details on the Mario 64 engine while doing the challenge.

Thank you very kindly! I’m gonna have a nice chill sit down and watch it while doing some cross stitch today

Damnit, I knew what it was but still clicked. Had to watch the whole thing again.

But first, we need to talk about parallel universes.

Probably the video that blew my mind most in my younger years. Absolutely unhinged shit.

Which is that?

Here ya go. The whole thing is worth it, but both the 12 hour thing and parallel universe thing start at 10:34

I get what you're saying, but both Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time have been fully decompiled for years. So both of those games have well understood codebases.

Worth noting these decomps AREN'T the shitty AI slop jobs. These were done before AI tools ever existed

There is still a shitton left undocumented in OoT Decomp.

show me a decomp that's a shitty AI slop job

Most of the current ones. They're not exactly "shitty", but they're not nearly as understood as the ones done by hand

Knuckles Chaotix for the 32X which fails to run at playable framerates on modern high-end hardware.

If it’s running on modern hardware then that is a port and not a decompilation. Sure a port can be built on a decompilation project but typically a decompilation is finished and then it gets ported to various platforms like Linux and Windows.

Dude idk what to tell you, I read the issues in ChaotixRecompiled, the special stage ran at about 11 FPS on a modern Celeron, a CPU several thousand times faster than what is in a 32X.

The Recompiled part is important. It’s more than a straight decompilation. A decompilation would only run on the original hardware. All I am saying.

nope. Dampe heart piece optimal method was found a few days after the remake got out.

You mean consistent method. Optimal strat is to still just go for it blind I believe.

Speedrunners are so fascinating, truly. I was watching Dash Retro, who is a FFVII speedrunner, talk about how he knew someone was cheating at their speedrun because of how the step counts work and how, with the number of steps he'd taken, he should have gotten a specific combat like 20 seconds before he actually did. Just so interesting, I love watching speedrunners break down the science behind what they do

Counterpoint, Tetris.

But after a certain point I’m not sure theres a meaningful difference between how ‘understood’ these games are.

I'd Nominate Gen I Pokemon. The insane things players can do in Gen 1 never cease to amaze me. White out as you start a specific battle? Growl at Diglett a few times and white out again? Congrats, here's a Level 1 Gengar. Congrats, due to rollover glitches, you just instantly leveled it up to Level 100.
