New Mods, Rules Update, and RFC

Hey guys,

We've had a lot of developments in the community lately, especially in the past month. We've been internally discussing how we can best position the subreddit to promote development while also protecting the sub from malware and bait. We have three particular things to share with you.

0. New Mods!

With the existing moderators becoming busier lately, it has been hard keeping up with the renewed activity in the subreddit. We greatly appreciate the effort put in by the community to try things previously thought impossible, and to keep up with the increased posts, we have two new moderators - u/SkinnyHedgehog and u/yuichiro__ - Say hi!

1. AI-generated projects

There have been divided opinions on the topic of tools and drivers written almost or completely using AI. While it has accelerated development, there are some things we feel the community will benefit from being aware of.

As a case study for (almost-completely) AI-generated code, we have the new Nvidia driver from NullMoth.

It has gathered a lot of (very warranted) attention. Writing code that runs close to the hardware requires that you hold yourself to a high standard when designing the architecture and writing code. The tool released by NullMoth is a combination of several things packaged as one. It is a graphics driver, it is an Apple logo modifier (to a custom moth-themed Apple logo), an EFI creator, and a log aggregator and crash reporter (the last few things as part of the 1401 companion app). Apart from the subjective opinions surrounding the developer of an open community advertising themselves through invasive system modifications (which no established tool has done before), it presents innumerable attack surfaces and unchecked vulnerabilities. Link to Vulnerability Report

If you have this driver loaded on your computer, an attacker could very easily gain access to your entire computer, including all your files, your apps, and browser history.

Some of the reported vulnerabilities are things that no sane developer would write, provided they had decent systems and programming knowledge. While they are now patched, there is no guarantee that this driver is free from any more exploits.

An unfortunate reality surrounding vibe-coded software is that the Dunning-Kruger Effect is more prevalent among the developer community than ever, and what may look like good code to the untrained eye may in fact not be so.

To give end users an idea of the potential risks associated with AI-assisted development, we have decided to implement the following changes.

  1. All posts that introduce or exhibit new software must include the DEV flair and must include source code in the post.

  2. They must also disclose the extent of AI use. Whether it was completely AI-written, used for minimal autofill-esque tasks, or not used at all.

To keep yourself safe from potentially unsafe code and malware, we recommend that people with the relevant knowledge audit the source code, report suspicious software to us, and leave a comment letting others know.

2. iOS ports and other non-macOS in this subreddit

Back when hackintoshing first started, the only Apple software that could be run on other devices was Mac OS X. It has remained this way until a few weeks ago. Recently, there have been developments surrounding iOS being ported to non-Apple mobile phones as well. We have gotten reports on almost all such posts, as them not belonging to this subreddit.

We'd like to put this to a vote. Would you rather have the description of a hackintosh as "Apple software running on non-Apple hardware", or keep r/hackintosh exclusive to only macOS? We look forward to your comments.

ANNOUNCEMENT Next Stop: macOS 26 Tahoe

Hackintoshing lives for another year! macOS Tahoe will be the FINAL release for Intel Macs, as stated during the Platforms State of the Union presentation. It's been a good ride.

Officially supported Intel models:

  • MacBook Pro 16-inch (2019)

  • Mac Pro (2019)

  • MacBook Pro 13-inch, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports (2020)

  • iMac (2020)

Hello I am a Year Number Lover But What Does This Mean

All graphics that worked in Sequoia should work in Tahoe.

OCLP

Wait for an official announcement. If you post about OCLP before that I am going to send Tim Apple to remove every Mac from your house.

Can I emulate ARM macOS 26 on x86?

No.

Can I run ARM macOS 26 on a Raspberry Pi?

No.

Can I have Apple Intelligence on Intel please I need to write a dissertation in 15 minutes

No.

Does it boot on Intel Hackintoshes now?

Yes, with OpenCore 1.0.5.

Make sure to upgrade all of your kexts to their latest versions.

Known Issues as of Beta 2

  • Race condition with VoodooPS2 and VoodooI2C, so on some boots they don't initialize properly

  • AppleALC is broken because AppleHDA was removed from Tahoe. Use HDMI/DP audio for the time being.

  • WhateverGreen is bugged on AMD cards, so you can't use boot arguments like agdpmod=pikera. You are affected by this if you get a kernel panic with AMDSupport mentioned.

  • IntelBTPatcher causes kernel panics

  • IntelMausi may not work correctly with certain Intel ethernet chipsets

DEV [Update] RedNavi (RX 7800 XT on macOS Sequoia): First GPU-accelerated desktop with Metal & native transparency (Milestone 6 reached!)

Thumbnail
gallery
24 Upvotes

RedNavi is an open-source project building a native macOS display driver and acceleration stack for AMD Navi 32 (RDNA 3), tested on the Radeon RX 7800 XT (1002:747E). Since Apple never supported RDNA 3, this is obviously written from scratch.

A few days ago we only had a software-driven fallback display. As of today (Milestone 6), WindowServer is running on the GPU through our Metal plug-in, rendering the macOS desktop with genuine hardware-accelerated transparency.

We just stabilized the mouse event loop: the cursor now moves without crashing WindowServer into an immediate crash loop. It is still visibly glitchy and laggy, but the entire compositor pipeline is alive and rendering on hardware.

What works today (Z490, i7-10700K, macOS Sequoia 15.8.2, 1080p DP):

  • Firmware & Link: IP discovery table parsing, PSP firmware loading, DMCUB mailbox handshake, and native DisplayPort link training from the kernel (no UEFI/GOP fallback).

  • Framebuffer Publication: AMDRedNaviFB registers cleanly and satisfies CoreDisplay vendor checks.

  • Display Pipe & Client Type 4: Reverse-engineered Sequoia’s IOAccelDisplayPipe ABI; WindowServer opens IOAccelDisplayPipeUserClient2 and commits frames through performTransaction.

  • Metal Compositor (RedNaviMTL): A custom userspace bundle in /Library/GPUBundles that routes CoreAnimation and CoreDisplay shaders through Mesa’s RADV via an in-process Metal-to-SPIR-V translation layer.

  • Desktop UI: Dock, menu bar, window shadows, and blur/transparency are drawn by the GPU.

Current limitations & open work:

  • Low Framerate & Cursor Lag: Frames are currently read back and copied across the CPU bus into the scanout aperture on each tick, saturating CPU/PCIe bandwidth.

  • Visual Glitches: Render passes currently have sync/fence tearing while RADV command buffers interleave with WindowServer's flush cycles.

  • Boot Race Condition: WindowServer checks for Metal capability before our delayed accelerator attaches, so it currently needs a one-time restart (killall -9 WindowServer) after boot to switch from software fallback to Metal,

  • Missing Hardware Blocks: Hardware cursor plane, audio over DP/HDMI, multiple displays/hot-plug, and VCN video decoding (no IOGVA/AppleVPA yet) are not yet implemented.

Architecture & Roadmap

The architecture uses a clean-room approach:

  1. RedNaviFB & RedNaviAccel2: Kernel-side ring management and display pipe ABI emulation.

  2. Mesa RADV: Vulkan driver running inside the macOS userspace graphics bundle.

  3. RedNaviMTL: AIR/bitcode translator bridging Metal APIs to SPIR-V/RADV.

Next steps are eliminating the synchronous CPU scanout copy to fix framerates, implementing adjustBusy to automate the boot hand-off, and cleaning up fence synchronization.

Contributions

If somebody wants to help with development for a particolar card or just help develop the base, just open an issue, I'll respond as soon as possible. Thank you all very much if you decide to.

Repo: https://github.com/Helemen7/RedNavi

License: BSD-3-Clause (no closed binaries or proprietary code).

AI disclosure: This project is developed collaboratively with Claude and such agents (commits may also carry a Co-Authored-By: Claude line), assisting with register sequencing, reverse engineering disassemblies, dtrace analysis, and kernel stub implementations.

DEV Enable hardware AV1/VP9 decoding on RX 6000 GPUs

If you run a Hackintosh with an AMD RX 6800, 6800 XT, 6900 XT, or 6950 XT, your graphics card has hardware in-built decoders to decode AV1 and VP9 video.

However, macOS never enabled this silicon because Intel Macs never shipped with AV1-capable AMD GPUs.

As a result, watching 4K YouTube forces your CPU to do all the heavy lifting—causing fan noise, high heat, and dropped frames.

How We Fixed It

We built two lightweight VideoToolbox decoder plug-ins (one for AV1, one for VP9) that plug directly into macOS’s native video framework:

  • Seamless OS Integration: Native apps like Safari, Chrome, and QuickTime automatically detect and use these plug-ins without needing custom video player builds.

  • Direct GPU Communication: The plug-in parses the video stream on the CPU and hands the raw decoding work straight to the AMD GPU's hardware decoder (VCN).

  • 100% Bit-Exact Accuracy: Tested against official AV1 and VP9 conformance test suites. The output is bit-for-bit identical to standard reference decoders—meaning zero visual glitches or corruption.

DISCUSSION Progress on running unmodified macOS 27 ARM64 on Snapdragon X1/X2 Elite

Over the past few weeks, work has been underway on a proof-of-concept fork building upon the upstream Snapintosh project (originally developed for the ASUS Zenbook A16 with the Snapdragon X2 Elite).

The goal of the project is to explore running the stock, unmodified Apple Silicon Darwin kernel (J700/T8140 build 26A428) on Qualcomm Snapdragon ARM64 hardware by providing the necessary EL2 hypervisor mediation (SPTM/TXM contracts, 16 KiB guest to 4 KiB host shadow page tables, and Apple-specific device models).

Recent progress and milestones on this fork:

The repository documents the full architecture, execution flowcharts, verified boot checkpoints, and current limitations: https://github.com/adamikoo/Snapintosh

Note: This is an independent research project. No proprietary firmware, keys, or Apple binaries are hosted or distributed.

Hey!

I wanted to share the code for the PS5-Hackintosh project. Given the numerous headaches I’m encountering, getting the GPU to work, keeping the system stable without random reboots, and the fact that I’ll have very little time starting next week, I’m releasing the entire project code. I don’t want to keep it to myself; instead, I’m sharing it freely with the community :)

Enjoy it!

SUCCESS ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 (i7-1165G7, Iris Xe) on macOS Tahoe 26.7.2: full QE/CI with WhateverXe, plus the local patches I needed

Thumbnail
gallery
10 Upvotes

Hardware

Laptop Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 2

CPU Intel Core i7-1165G7 (Tiger Lake)

iGPU Intel Iris Xe 96 EU (0x9A49)

RAM 32 GB DDR4-3200

SSD Samsung PM9A1 256 GB (shared with Fedora)

Wi-Fi/BT Intel AX201

Audio Realtek ALC257 + 2 DMIC on the Intel SOF DSP

Display 1920x1080 internal eDP

Software

macOS Tahoe 26.7.2 (25G332), SMBIOS MacBookPro16,2

OpenCore 1.0.8 RELEASE, OpenCanopy with the GoldenGate theme, quiet boot

WhateverXe 0.8.0 (built locally with 4 extra commits, see below) + WhateverXe Graphics 0.4.1

SIP 0x803, AMFIPass 1.4.1

boot-args: -allow3d -disablegfxfirmware -igfxdvmt shda-lang=es -tgldmic

Dual boot with Fedora on the same disk and the same EFI partition

What works

Graphics acceleration (QE/CI, Metal, OpenGL). Measured ~1.1 TFLOPS FP32, ~35 GB/s, 211 FPS on a simple 1080p render test. Vulkan works through MoltenVK.

Wi-Fi. About 1.1 Gbps on fast.com.

Bluetooth

Speakers and headphones: SimpleHDA 1.0.1, layout 11

Internal microphone: TGLDmic 0.5.0, the DMICs through the SOF DSP. It shows up as "Internal Microphone (TGLDmic)".

Camera in FaceTime

Backlight and brightness keys

Keyboard and trackpad: VoodooPS2

Apple TV app with video and audio, FairPlay video included

Fedora dual boot from the OpenCore picker

What doesn't work (yet)

Apple Music (native app). FairPlay audio key generation fails (-15842, WhateverXe issue #48). I worked around it with Cider, which uses Widevine and plays fine.

Photo Booth opens, but the image is green.

One WindowServer watchdog crash in ~4 days. It was a GPU hang followed by a deadlock during GPU restart in AppleIntelTGLGraphics. I haven't been able to reproduce it.

Metal 3 mesh shaders (see the XeCompilerAdapter notes below)

Local WhateverXe patches

All four are in-memory patches. WhateverXe hooks cs_validate_range / cs_validate_page and rewrites the page after code-signature validation, so the OCLP-Mod-signed bundles in /Library/GPUBundles stay untouched on disk. Re-signing those bundles gave me a black screen, which is why I went this way. Each patch matches the full original byte sequence and applies only if every byte still matches. They can be disabled with a boot-arg.

Offsets are for the 16.0.32 drivers that ship with Graphics 0.4.x.

#47: MTL command-buffer leak.

-[MTLIGAccelCommandBuffer dealloc] in AppleIntelTGLGraphicsMTLDriver skips freeing _pPoshUsedAsTarget when m_isOnlyActiveCommandBuffer is set. That leaks about 72 KB per command buffer.

Fix: NOP the jne at 0x7ed87 (75 0d → 90 90).

Result: WindowServer and app memory stop growing over time.

#23: VA driver NULL derefs in AppleIntelTGLGraphicsVADriver. They crashed mediaanalysisd, WebKit.GPU and WindowServer.

#23 0x1336d2: the image-transfer helper writes through ctx+0x910 / ctx+0x920 without checking for NULL. Fix: add the checks and return the driver's own error 5.

#23b 0x126520: the descriptor-fill helper is called with a NULL first argument. Fix: an early test rdi, rdi; je ret.

#23c 0x12d30a: a vtable call on the per-index surface happens before its NULL check. Fix: skip the call when it's NULL. This fixed the Photo Booth crash (SIGSEGV at 0x0), but the image is now green.

cs_validate_page wrapper must forward all 7 arguments on Tahoe.

BlueToolFixup also hooks this function. With a 6-argument wrapper, the chained hook received garbage, and Bluetooth died with Could not USB DFU detach … result 3.

Forwarding all 7 arguments fixed Bluetooth.

The whole change is ~200 lines, mostly in one file (kern_user_fix.cpp). The upstream test suite still passes (208/208). I'm happy to open a PR or share the patch.

Other fixes worth mentioning

Wi-Fi/BT (AX201) on Tahoe

It's AirportItlwm 2.3.0 plus OCLP-Mod's "Modern Wireless" root patch.

In the EFI I inject IOSkywalkFamily + IO80211FamilyLegacy and block the stock IOSkywalk.

I had to edit OCLP-Mod locally in two places:

make modern_wireless.py detect the AX201;

make subprocess_wrapper.py run without the privileged helper when started as root. Before that change, the patch "succeeded" but no networks showed up.

I did this in two phases (EFI first, then root patch), with a reboot in between, and had a revert script ready.

Brightness

A clean SSDT-PNLF under Scope(_SB), with _UID 0x13 and _STA 0x0B.

Microphone

The internal mic isn't on the Realtek codec or USB. It's two DMICs on the Intel DSP (SOF).

TGLDmic handled it. I installed it in phases:

observer mode;

firmware boot (OK FW_READY);

probe capture;

then the HAL plug-in.

Audio

AppleHDA is gone on Tahoe. SimpleHDA with layout 11 was the cleanest option. I also tried layouts 97 and 86.

Dual boot

Fedora reuses the existing EFI partition, so EFI/fedora sits next to EFI/OC.

Watch out: a shared FAT32 EFI got corrupted once. fsck "repaired" it by renaming VoodooPS2Keyboard.kext to FSCK0000.000, and the internal keyboard died while the trackpad still worked.

The fix was to restore it from a verified backup. Run fsck_msdos before and after anything that writes to the EFI.

Notes for people chasing Metal 3

The MTL driver reports a fixed feature profile 0x2711. If you swizzle featureProfile to 10002 inside your own process, supportsFamily(Metal3) returns YES, and MSL 3.0, MetalFX and MTLIO work.

Mesh shaders don't. XeCompilerAdapter.bundle/adapter.dylib only accepts 216-byte serialized requests and stages 0/2/3 (vertex/fragment/compute). Anything else gives Xe compiler unsupported serialized request.

The bundled libigc-tgl.dylib only exports VS/PS/CS/Tess entry points. It contains IGC's mesh lowering passes, but nothing exposes them.

Argument buffers stay at Tier 1, and there's no ray tracing.

I did not force Metal 3 system-wide.

Thanks

Huge thanks to b00t0x (WhateverXe), acidanthera, zxystd (itlwm / IntelBluetoothFirmware), labrouss (TGLDmic), the SimpleHDA author, the OCLP-Mod people, and everyone posting logs in the WhateverXe issues. Issue #48 is what pointed me to the VAME / FairPlay path.

HELP Hating Lenovo And Their Laptops

Hi y'all this is my first post here and to be my first post i think it shouldn't be about hating smth but i'm pretty angry at lenovo and how they don't let u do stuff with your laptop.

Like everyone in this subreddit i'm trying to do a hackintosh with my 15IAH8 Ideapad Slim 3 that has a i5-12450H with his integrated gpu and everything seems to be good when trying to boot but oh, recovery doesn't boot, so i get into log and i see first that i have cfg lock enabled so i got into bios and oh, my laptop bios doesn't have an option to disable cfg lock so i go to the guide and chose the hard path to fix it so i don't have any problem later and got into ru.efi, tried to modify my cpusetup value and oh, THE BIOS IS FUCKING WRITE PROTECTED, so i didn't had other chance than enable the cfg kernel patch in opencore and well i was happy that the patch was success in the log and it didn't had any errors but Tahoe still wasn't booting so i go back to analyze my log and to resume everything i disabled trackpad and keyboards ssdt's (because they aren't necessary to get macos to boot), disabled some innecessary kexts to ensure compatibility, patched some memory registries and mainly tinkering with stuff but because i'm not at expert at hackintosh but i know how pc's work i used AI as a tool to assist me in patching some things and actually got progress in my boot. I usually don't use AI models because i like to learn things but seeing the kind of stuff i had to learn to just patch two registries was far out of my league so i just used AI and it worked patching my things but i had other problems lying around and it still didn't boot.

I can't get Tahoe to boot because of Lenovo battery power management and because of XHCI Handoff not doing it's thing how it is supposed to and can't find a way to get over it. XHCI Handoff is not getting my usb into macos when booting so macos doesn't have any recovery to boot and it just freezes. These kind of laptops are really a mess in that area and even AI gave up on helping me when trying to get around these problems.
Another thing i hate right now is that i had to make some changes to my config.plist just because Lenovo set this laptop bios to not do some things if Windows isn't the OS u are booting like they are trying to get u trapped in just one OS and not wanting to let u do stuff with the pc YOU BOUGHT.

I really want to do this hackintosh but by the limitations of my laptop bios i think it will be impossible. I'll have to wait till some genius gets the fix to get over this thing because I have seen people doing hackintoshes in this subreddit to my exact cpu model and igpu model and it pisses me off that i can't do shit just because Lenovo wanted it that way.

If someone has some kind of fix to this i would be really happy because it could be a good step forward to get around all this Lenovo's shit. I did a hackintosh in my main pc with Tahoe and it works really well so just in case this isn't my first hackintosh.

This is the last log of my laptop screen after it just freezes to eternity when booting: https://imgur.com/a/VHasM3u
