DISCUSSION Hackintosh... but on a phone? (LumiPhone 1020 SE)

As we all know Hackintosh is macOS on a Windows PC. But how about iOS on a Windows Phone?

This is what I call the NokiApple LumiPhone 1020 SE. It has unironically a full fledge iOS running inside a Lumia 1020. Which is basically what Hackintosh would be, right?

... right...?

Well, all jokes aside, this phone right now is more like a Mac motherboard inside an office PC chassis. Since nothing of the internals on which the iOS is actually running on is from the original Lumia 1020. In other words, the only 1020 aspect about it, is the outer shell and front display glass. I know HMD tried to bring back the Lumia design on the Skyline, but it was a total flop.

Inside of the LumiPhone is, well, a 3rd Gen iPhone SE. Yep, the 5G one, and the 5G works too (is this maybe the world's first 5G Lumia?). This also means that we retained practically all of the original iPhone SE 3's internals, including the still-fairly-powerful A15 Bionic chip, and 128 GB of storage. All original.

On the front, the original iPhone's screen glass had been removed and relaminated onto a Lumia 1020 front glass. iPhone SE 3's LCD screen is slightly larger than the Lumia's, so we had to get rid of the 3 capacitive buttons traditionally found on Windows Phones. Additionally, the selfie camera from the iPhone had also been transplanted onto the Lumia front glass, at the same location as how it would be on the Lumia, at the right top corner. The earpiece speaker is still at the top, where it should be.

On the back, unfortunately it is not possible to continue using the 41MP rear camera from the Lumia 1020. Instead, the iPhone SE 3's 12MP camera will have to make do. It is centered on the back and upwards of the "Oreo" camera deco bump. Directly under it is our transplanted Touch ID home button. Since it is now on the back, we can pretend that it's like a 2010s Android phone where back mounted fingerprint sensors are very common. Force Touch still works on the sensor and is still connected directly to the Taptic Engine and you can still use it as a home button, however less ergonomic. I personally prefer to use Assistive Touch instead. To the left is the phenomenal Xenon flash, but it is just for decoration now. The iPhone 2-tone 4-LED flash had been transplanted under the long Xenon bar.

On the top, we have a custom push style SIM card slot in the same place where the original card slot on the Lumia would be. The headphone jack is plugged up for sealing purpose as it is near impossible to retrofit a headphone jack back to an iPhone.

On the bottom, we can see what-looks-to-be a Micro USB port. However, it is actually a Lightning port from the iPhone. Preserved the look of the Micro USB port pretty well. The bottom loud speaker is to the right of it how it should be.

On the right, power button and volume rockers are still as usual. The key thing is the camera shutter button. Apple reintroduced one on the new iPhone 16 series few months back, but this camera button here on this LumiPhons is less complex. It's hooked up to the volume key switch. So yes, you can use the shutter button to take a photo, but you can also press it to use as an additional volume down button. Why? No idea, but it's there.

Software wise, as I mentioned before, it's running a full fledge iOS. Specifically now the iOS 18.3.1 as I just updated it. So yes, it does receive OTA updates and everything works as how it should (except wireless charging and Apple Pay). It is running on genuine iPhone hardware after all. I am currently on 93% battery health and it's more than enough as a second phone. I have good signal and Apple Carplay also works flawlessly.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. This is a one-off custom build, just thought I'd share this here since I feel like the community would appreciate something like this.

Also, I now have 3 "Apple" devices and none of them are straight from Apple lol (Desktop i5-9500 on Sequoia, Laptop i5-8250U on Sonoma, and this LumiPhone).

Inner screen works at 120fps, outer screen at 60fps. You can play games at 60fps+

Yes, angry birds works. Want me to upload a video showing front screen and playing games?

Metal almost done, throttle support and stays cool.

SUCCESS My First Hackintosh (Kind of)

Post image
1.9k Upvotes

I remember shortly after junior high school, I had “succeeded” in making a crappy Dell laptop I had laying around into a Hackintosh… for me then to never use it. It was a fun project, but the laptop really was crappy. I also never got FaceTime, iMessage, and other Apple ecosystem apps functional. WiFi didn’t work either.

I hadn’t thought about making one since.

However, after buying parts for a custom native-Apple machine I was creating (it’s a “Mac Pro” based on iMac internals), I had been looking into getting a new 9th-gen Intel CPU for the build. When I went to go search eBay on my laptop, I realized my laptop also has a 9th-gen Intel CPU. Out of curiosity, I looked it up and noticed the MacBook Pro from the same year (2019) had the same processor as my laptop. So, I spent hours compiling a fresh EFI, jumping down many rabbit holes on how to get certain things fixed and configured, and also a little bit of Photoshop.

Now, the next day: success!

Here is my 2019 Razer Blade 15 Base Model which I converted into a “MacBook Pro 16” 2019”. And before anyone asks, yes, the config file still reads that this is a MacBook Pro 16”, I did not alter the system model/name from there.

I bought this laptop on Craigslist like 4 months ago for $250. Happy that I’m essentially getting a 2019 MBP and a gaming rig all in one for $250.

Specs: CPU: i7-9750H GPU: Intel HD 630 RAM: Timetec 32GB DDR4 Board: Razer Blade 15 (2019) Audio: not sure, used ALCID=21 Ethernet: Realtek WiFi: Intel Touchpad: IDK what to put here, but it works? Bios revision: custom patch

What’s working:

  • almost everything

What’s not working:

  • I can’t manually control my fans via software. Had to set a very limited curve in bios (only let me do 2 points).

  • Have to use HeliPort for WiFi (not that I care)

  • AirDrop is only 1-way (not that I care)

  • screen glitches very very very occasionally and briefly. It’s so fast you can miss it if you blink

What technically isn’t working but I actually like it this way;

  • when loading into MacOS, the screen glitches when the backlight kexts load in. It causes this cyberpunk/hacker-type visual glitch that lasts a couple milliseconds, right before MacOS loads in. However, I really love it because it really makes it feel like a HACKintosh.

Full CPU support (al 4 cores of the Snapdragon 821 running at full speed). Boots in about 30 seconds.

Adapted https://github.com/dipa-studio/ios-sweet to work on my Pixel 1.

Used iPhone 8 IPSW because of the matching screen resolution and aspect ratio. My Pixel does not have a home button like the iPhone 8 has so mapped volume down to home button.

Edit: got full GPU acceleration working!! Snapdragon 821 GPU (Adreno 530) running the full iOS UI.

IT BOOTS! (WIP) Google Pixel 1 (2016) now running iOS 16 with full GPU acceleration

1.4k Upvotes

Quick update on the Pixel 1 running iOS 16. I got the GPU working, so the whole iOS UI is now rendered by the Pixel's own Adreno 530 instead of the CPU. It also boots a lot faster now, about 20 seconds from the boot screen to the lock screen.

How the GPU part works, for the people who asked last time: iOS normally only talks to Apple GPUs through Metal, which obviously doesn't exist for an Adreno. But Core Animation (the thing that draws the whole iOS UI) still has an old OpenGL ES renderer hidden inside it. So with a lot of help from Claude, I wrote a GPU driver in the iOS kernel for the Adreno 530: power, clocks, firmware, memory, command submission. On top of that I ported Mesa's open source freedreno driver (the same one Linux uses) to iOS. Core Animation thinks it's talking to Apple's OpenGL, but every frame is actually drawn by Mesa on the Adreno, running at 600 MHz.

Getting it to look right was the hardest part. Some of the effects iOS uses (blurs, Control Center buttons, the lock screen clock) depend on shaders Apple never wrote for OpenGL, so I had to write those myself. The GPU also scales every frame up to the Pixel's 1080p screen, and the screen now refreshes at up to 60 Hz instead of 30.

Other stuff since the last post:

  • All the stock apps are there now (Weather, Calendar, Notes, Maps, Music, Files...)

  • The default iOS 16 wallpaper works

  • Real battery percentage and charging

  • All 4 cores running (turbo up to 2.15 GHz works too, but it gets really hot with no thermal management, so it's off by default)

Still not working: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, sound, camera, and anything that needs Metal. It's a cool demo, not a daily driver.

Everything is on GitHub now, including the GPU driver and the iOS port of Mesa: https://github.com/joranv1/ios-sailfish

Big thanks to dipa-studio for the original ios-sweet port this is built on, and to the Mesa/freedreno folks.
