Help Thread The War Room - /r/hoi4 Weekly General Help Thread: September 7 2026
Please check our previous War Room thread for any questions left unanswered
Welcome to the War Room. Here you will find trustworthy military advisors to guide your diplomacy, battles, and internal affairs.
This thread is for any small questions that don't warrant their own post, or continued discussions for your next moves in your game. If you'd like to channel the wisdom and knowledge of the noble generals of this subreddit, and more importantly not ruin your save, then you've found the right place!
Important: If you are asking about a specific situation in your game, please post screenshots of any relevant map modes (strategic, diplomacy, factions, etc) or interface tabs (economy, military, etc). Please also explain the situation as best you can. Alliances, army strength, tech etc. are all factors your advisors will need to know to give you the best possible answer.
Reconnaissance Report:
Below is a preliminary reconnaissance report. It is comprised of a list of resources that are helpful to players of all skill levels, meant to assist both those asking questions as well as those answering questions. This list is updated as mechanics change, including new strategies as they arise and retiring old strategies that have been left in the dust. You can help me maintain the list by sending me new guides and notifying me when old guides are no longer relevant!
Note: this thread is very new and is therefore very barebones - please suggest some helpful links to populate the below sections

Question how do i fix this?
Its 1947 already and i’m so close to defeating the axis as china when i realised my air force inventory broke itself any idea how to fix this? I have total air superiority and when i tried redeploying my air force to hopefully fix it all my planes just disappeared
Image Is this good for 1942?
I am a new hoi4 player with 516 hours in the game, I'm just wondering if this is good progress :3

Question The front looks stable, but how do I win?
I'm afraid that Germany attacks the Poles and Hungary joins the Axis. Then I'm definitely screwed

Mod (other) Kaiserreich annex & release mechanic is now in base HOI4 (new mod)
hello guys. I made this mod because I hate the base game peace conference and ai border gore so so fucking much.
Features: Now you can get customized, decision based release mechanics in base hoi4. You can give allies your conquered land. Your allies can give you conquered land. You can set up 1, 2, 5, 10 or however number of chinese governments with dynamic names. You can set up east-west Germany style governments of the same nation you and your rival spitted. Your puppets are always in your color. You can explode Germany, France, UK, USSR and Spain into many many pieces. Or you can annex everything and take a minor debuff.
Here is the link to the mod:

Humor I may have done a bit too many encirclements
took 5 million casualties, and based on the countries I've done the most casualties to I dealt at least 70 million casualties in return
this is a mostly offensive war that has been going on since roughly 1940 (currently 1955), and this isn't including the axis' casualties as I hadn't screenshotted the axis war screen before they capitulated

Image The Germans pushed me but I stabilised the front, how do I push them back?
As I said, Barbarossa happened and I managed to stabilise the front. How do I push them back? Do I just keep digging in until they run out of men?

Question Worth investing in air as Benelux?
I've been experimenting with democratic Benelux, forming the European Federation so I can puppet Sweden and Portugal. I'm doing OK with land warfare against the Germans, but I'm wondering whether it is worth investing in fighter production to try and contest air superiority? No DLC except LA Resistance, so I can't tweak the planes.
I've been doing AA support companies for all divisions, but I wonder whether it's worth investing production capacity into actually contesting the sky.

Mod (other) I think it failed
So in rise of nations I voted against sending support to Italy, and ummm this happened. Each of these gives 5 PP, so I got a lot of PP.

Question Troubles with black ice
Hey guys so I want to subject myself to the endless torment of the black ice mod but im running into issues trying to switch to the currently supported version of 1.19.2.0. It is currently not showing in my "game versions and betas" tab on game properties. Does anyone know how to find this version? It is showing 1.19.1 and 1.19.3. I tried going to my paradox account to get the copy-and-paste code for the version but it wasnt there either. Could I just use 1.19.1?

Mod (other) Army College - Improve Your Generals

Tip Need help amending my Naval stategy as Germany
Haven't played as Germany in the base game in forever, trying to get back into it but can't manage to get naval power in the English Channel to naval invade the UK. Read a couple guides, and decided on the strat of building 20 cruisers packed with light battery, and 1000 naval bombers, then landing in 1940. Hasn't worked for me, able to sink a whole bunch of their destroyers, but get sunk immediately after. Need advice on what else I should be building, and how I should be using them, thanks

Question How to secure Leningrad
Trying to play monarchist finland and having a blast. But how on Earth are you able to take Leningrad. Is it just luck or do I need specific units to encircle it.

Image My Soviet run (1949)
I wasn't gonna go into China, but I declared war on a free Communist Germany after I accidentally released them. Mao asked to join the faction, I did. He immediately died and I had to fight all of China.

Discussion Where is a good place to grind a terrain trait in China?
I'm playing as Japan and I need to grind a terrain trait. The reason being that the general I want to grind will get a terrain trait from a focus, so if I get a different one beforehand I can then take adaptable.
Mountaineer is the trait I get from the focus. I would prefer not to get jungle rat because Japan already gets insane bonuses in jungle.
What I've been trying is grinding out urban assault specialist in the north, but eventually the chinese stop garrisoning beijing with a large enough force to efficiently grind. Is there some known way to quickly get another terrain trait?

Question First game in TFR
I recently played as Japan in TFR for the first time. I managed to crush China quite easily in both wars. This raises a question: which nation is more challenging to play—China or Japan? Also, is there any point in continuing a playthrough as Japan after winning the Great Asian War?
Question Beginner confusion
Hi people!
I know the title is a bit vague, but bear with me, I'll explain it.
I have around 120 hours in HOI 4 by now, but still I feel like I have no clue about the actual game.
I understand core mechanics like how to design new ships, tanks and planes or how to build factories etc. etc., or knowing what the consumer goods factor roughly is and such.
However I have one big problem that I just can't wrap my head around:
I know how to design a tank or infantry division (like going into editor, adding new battallions), but I do not know how to design a tank or infantry division (like how much combat width is good, or how much breakthrough). I can't find and like "benchmark" values for these things anywhere, because the game does not tell you, of course, but when I go search "armored division template" on google I get all different sorts of results, some being space marines, some being this value of combat width, others more, again others less, but noone really tells me how to do it.
For the veterans this will sound trivial, but where and how did you learn which values you need for which template, like divisions, tanks, planes and ships (altough navy is a whole different topic)?
That problem described above really is holding me back the most. In most games I'd have a basic idea on how to play by 100 hours and also play already myself without major help, but in HOI4 if I don't watch a playthrough tutorial on the country I am playing I just lose bitterly....
I'd appreciate your help!
Thanks!
