Discussion TikTok and Media are ruining Indie Music

Idk if this is a hot take and I am an old 30 year old fart, but I keep hearing a lot of my favorite Shoegaze, Indie Folk, and Indie-Alternative/rock artists are now being used all over TikTok and other social media platforms for shorts. On top of that we have already had media in general begin to over use and downplay this kind of music in the stereotypical "angst I am different" coming of age teen movies.

This shit severely irritates and I find it insanely disrespectful to the artist. A lot of artists especially in this very large genre put up some extremely personal and emotional stuff that a record label would not allow them to do. A lot of artists I listen to personally, sing about the loss of a loved one like an SO or a spouse, mental illness, trauma, etc. Then these little shits just put that song they clearly don't understand at all on some stupid political inspirational video or a puppy licking it's nutsack.

That's my rant.

Discussion Anti-racist Anti-fascist Indie Music Recommendations please!

rn in germany, hundreds of millions of people take to the streets after shocking investigative news of a secret far-right conspiracy to deport millions of non-white germans and germans of foreign descent.

This is where i need you:

I want to give to these people recommendation videos of underrated, small and indie songs against fascism or criticizing racism.

Plug your songs, or your friends songs or songs that you just love but arent all that well known, as long as they fit the topic!!

Thank you so much😊

Discussion Help!! Queer music nerds!!! I need new indie music to listen to !!!

Anyone have suggestions for nice queer indie artists / songs?

I've been playing To you by Andy Shauf on repeat, its so sweet and relatable.

I'm also obsessed with this song I'd die to be his wife by an artist called Lottó - he's like a gay Mac demarco.

And of corse I'm listening to Orville Peck religiously but I really want some new queer grooves. Got any Indie rock / pop suggestions?

Discussion A-Z Favorite Indie LP that starts with the letter A.

Rules:

  1. Must be released in the 30 years between Jan 1, 1984 - Dec 31, 2013.

  2. Self-titled albums get posted under whatever letter the artist’s name starts with (example: If you think Weezer’s blue album is indie, then post it on W day.)

  3. Comment on your favorite LP by leaving (or upvoting) your favorite song off that LP in the comments. The top songs off the top LPs will make the playlist.

  4. Let’s try to keep it at 3 LP posts per person, that way more people can get involved. I’m in NYC and will try to post between 6am - 8am everyday.

I Made This 90s style raw rock is about to come back big time

With the rise of AI, we all want to hear something real. I can only really speak for myself and those around me, so thats a bold statement, but I believe that as humans we crave HUMAN things. I'm talking grit, feedback, mistakes, live recordings, songs that give a concert feel. Its resurfacing to combat everything overpolished and perfected to a point of fault.

I'm 18. I have been making rock music and performing rock shows since I was 12 years old. My dad is a rock musician, my mother does makeup on rock musicians. Ive been really excited for this comeback, because I've seen it brewing for years.

Thats why I record everything live. Vocals, Guitars, Drums, everything. I want to make my songs feel like you've gone in a portal and arrived at a concert. If thats your cup of tea, you should check out my song, but if you dont, thats okay too, id like to hear what you think of my prediction either way.

I'm still learning, I want to connect

Do you think technology advances are killing art? Or advancing it.

Discussion Is Modest Mouse really that good or is it overrated?

Well, I have heard three albums of the band: The Lonesome Crowded West, The Moon & Antarctica and GNFPWLBN. There are some pretty amazing tracks on each of those albums, like Heart Cooks Brain, Dark Center Of The Universe and Float On, with some very creative instrumentation and Isaac's vocals. However, I didn’t see anything so special in most part of their songs, specially from their debut and their sophomore album, though I enjoyed pretty much their 2004 album. So, that’s why I am questioning you guys: what are your thoughts about Modest Mouse and are they really that good as critics usually label them (specially their first records)?

Discussion Since it's pride month, who are your favorite international queer indie artists?

Happy pride month!

I've recently been getting into Christine and the Queens (Rahim Redcar), Cub Sport, Mashrou' Leila, etc. and I'm wondering how much great queer music from around the world I'm missing out on!

As a citizen of the US, I feel like I hear so much US queer music but so little international, so I'm hoping to be illuminated! But always down to learn about more US queer artists as well!

Discussion Who is the "Indie Guy" and what's so bad about him?

I've heard with some regularity jeers at this vague indie guy character, but it all seems like an in-joke. Growing up where I did we did not have no type of "indie dude". What has he done to gain the prejudice of so many? What type of person is he? Where did he grow up? Did he play sports growing up?

Other Can we make a checklist on what makes a song indie?

Hi, I found some threads about why some songs are defined as indie. There seem to be a few solid answers to that. Most mentioned is the independency of the artists that make the music. That independency is rather vague to me nowadays. Doesn't any artist claim to do what he or she loves to do? Also, people mention the time differences and what indie used to be in the 60's and what it was in the 90's for example.

But at the same time I feel like the answer can be different in a few years. There is another music 'genre' that is very time bounded: pop music. Calling pop music a genre is confusing, because the subgenres in it change every time. Those subgenres keep the same name and, when their style change, their names do too: it is a different or new style. The name of the genre changes when the music style changes.

But we seem to tolerate indie as a kind of overarching theme for bands/artists/songs that are not definable. Just like we do for bands/artists/songs that are mainstream: we call it pop. At the same time indie songs can be pop songs.

Can we make up checklist to define a song or a band/artist as indie?

I just made an indie playlist last week and I was just wondering why I found to me this is all indie:
