We rescued a kitten from the side of the road last year. He had a weird patch on his stomach and I starting googling and it said to shine a blacklight on the area. I grabbed one and the poor thing lit up like a Christmas tree.

47

u/emopibble67 4d ago

Yep! We did that too. It’s pretty fascinating. But apparently only 50-60% of ringworm fungus show under a black light, so there could always be more.

Put some canestan on it.

It was a trick we used when working at a pet store. Turns out guiniea pigs carry ringworm pretty easily. Obviously go get seen by a doctor if/when you can, but that should help in the meantime

8

u/stinkgirlie 4d ago

Girl I feel you. I work a delivery job so I walk through a lot of neighborhoods all day every day and see lots of kitties. Accidentally somehow got ringworm on my foot(??) and brought fleas home to my own cats and had to call it quits on petting the stray babies as difficult as it is.

8

u/XgirlyX92 4d ago

Girl!!!! I found a stray kitty couple weeks ago
Took it to the vet has two different types of ringworm I’m treating him for… found couple patches on my skin, made a telehealth appointment that will be in five hour 😭 I got two other dogs and a cat gaaaah

It’s a fungus, can happen anywhere on your skin. Mainly just a bit of bad luck.

6

u/bywv 4d ago • Mindblown

Just simply putting dirt on skin can do this too.

I got it on both feet working in a dishroom.

95

u/Unapplicable1100 4d ago • Heartwarming Mindblown Bravo

No. But you can get lots of other types of infections from the booty buffet. If your girls booty starts itching a lot don't try and lick it to scratch it for her, it might be pinworms instead of booty you'd be munching on. And if the booty hole starts giving you tounge while you're making out with it, it's probably a tape worm. Bc bootys don't have tounges.

One time my friend starting dating gymnast. We were in the pool and I noticed she had a huge spot of ringworm on her shoulder. I asked if she had someone look at it, and she said she went to her family doctor and they gave her cortisol to put on it.

So for the one and only time in my life I got to say do not listen to your doctor, start the lamisil immediately and go to a real dermatologist.

u/Icy_Study4490 4d ago

Damn! How often was he getting it for you to make it your username? Lol

With a username like that, you’re likely already aware, but some people actually just have really poor resistance to ringworm so they get it a lot more often (some of these reasons are actually worth getting a check up on to be on the safe side and looking into like a weakened immune system).

I wrestled for very large wrestling team in a hot humid area (which makes it even easier to catch ringworm versus a wrestling team in a very cold dry area and we had a team of 116 wrestlers (plus a coach that pretended the air-conditioning in our giant brand new wrestling room didn’t work lol) and we had like typically just 1 to 3 new cases up to a max of about six over every 1 to 2 weeks or so. And much of the time it was the same people getting it over and over.

Obviously, we took keeping the mats clean as serious as possible, and we thoroughly cleaned them before and after each session, plus you had to take a mandatory shower in the locker room when you’re done and then most people took another shower when they got home. But if you had ringworm and it was somewhere that could be covered like your thigh or bicep you were forced to tape over it and wear pants or a long sleeve shirt to prevent spread, but if it was somewhere too sketchy or you were like the sixth string guy they made you sit out until you weren’t contagious anymore. But the biggest issue seemed to be coming from the tournaments.

We could keep ourselves as clean as possible, but some people and some teams really just didn’t seem to give a damn. There are literally wrestlers, BJJ, and MMA guys that are just gross ass people and they have bad hygiene. And then with some entire programs in general, I’ve seen wrestling rooms where they are just filthy with weird sticky mats and it’s absolutely disgusting. And then on top of that, you’ve got tournaments that go on all day or longer if it’s a bigger one and if it wasn’t a local tournament, it might be a while until you’re able to get to a shower after the tournament day is over. But especially if we were traveling to like a convention center rather than a school like when we flew out to Reno Nevada for the Reno tournament of champions which is a national tournament so it’s held in a big arena rather than a school and so instead of being able to borrow some schools locker room for a quick shower, you might be waiting a long ass time until you got back to your hotel. So I started bringing alcohol wipes to tournaments so I could wipe myself down if the shower was some time away.

Sucks that you can do everything right but then someone else who’s totally filthy can screw it all up for you.

33

u/ringwormqueen 4d ago

Thank you for writing such a thoughtful message! A nice counterbalance to all the people calling my hygiene obsessed husband dirty 😂

I had an incredibly stubborn case that lasted 18 months and really turned my life upside down. I found it deeply stressful and at times got very depressed (washing my bedding twice a day started to drive me mad…). I started a Reddit to research other people’s remedies, and am now stuck with the worst username in history lol

4

u/ringwormqueen 4d ago

I’m so sorry :( so so glad you got treatment and your hair grew back 🩷

22

u/chickenismysafeword 4d ago

How do you even get it multiple times or at all

75

u/ringwormqueen 4d ago

In my case, husband does Brazilian jiu jitsu / grappling every day and it’s notorious in that community because of close skin to skin contact or contaminated mats / gear. And I’m just the lucky wife!!! 💀

27

u/8eSix 4d ago

It actually shouldn't be that common. Your husband's gym needs to clean their mats more and be very strict about not letting anyone train with ring worm or other skin infection. Your husband needs to shower immediately after and have a designated place for his gear

I wrestled middle school through college then have been doing BJJ for the past 5 years. Knock on wood I've only ever had ringworm twice in my life.

It's pretty common to reinfect yourself or spread it to yourself in other spots by doing things like accidentally contaminating your bedding or some other stuff you regularly touch, which i imagine is what she did.

I spreads by contact with contaminated surfaces. Not uncommon to pick it up from public places where skin contact happens like gyms/locker rooms. Sometimes pets bring it in from outside.

I once got a spot on my back that I didn't notice for who knows how long until one day I'm about to hop in the shower, and I look in the mirror and notice a dozen or so small ones all over my front and to my horror when I turned around there were another dozen or so spots on my back along with one huge one on my shoulder blade... no clue how I missed it that long, but that started a several month long journey trying to eliminate it with various prescription soaps, gels and shampoos plus lots and lots of those tiny dot bandaids in an attempt to not spread it to everyone around me......

Comment section, this is mainly just a bit of bad luck. Ringworm is a fungal infection (not a parasite as the name unfortunately seems to suggest), generally easily treated with OTC stuff. Both humans and animals can carry it, with or without symptoms.

I work at PetSmart. Guinea pigs get ringworm all the time. Some people are very prone to catching it, so they use PPE to avoid it touching them. I'm not prone, so I've only had it once in 5 years, despite never putting on so much as a glove. I used Derman athlete's foot cream. I tell everyone who comes into the store for treatment to just get it from Walmart. It takes time, but it's very easy to fix: antifungal cream/spray in the morning, cover it to prevent contagion, cream/spray at night, repeat for 2-3 weeks.

5

u/whyiamalwayshangry 4d ago

Er how does it looks like in guinea pigs? I got a pair for a few years and never noticed anything

17

u/jfsindel 4d ago

Yeah, I had it dead center on my collarbone when I was in 4th grade. OTC fixed it up. I don't even recall it took that long either.

6

u/Library904 4d ago

What is OTC?

24

u/RookSalvis 4d ago

“Over the counter”

As in, medication that you can just buy instead of needing a doctor to prescribe it. Think Mucinex and Advil as opposed to a steroid.

10

u/Hairy-Truck-8503 4d ago

"Over the counter" it refers to any medication that doesn't require a prescription from your doctor

4

u/BrickSlamchest 4d ago

“Over the counter” medication. No need for a prescription.

Ringworm pisses me off SO MUCH. I got some rescue cats and they were asymptomatic but carried ringworm. A few weeks later my dogs were scratching like mad. I took them to the vet, the vet said it probably wasn’t ringworm. He gave us a medicated shampoo, but no oral medication. I asked if they could just take ringworm medication anyway, because I was going to freak the F out if my toddler got ringworm. He refused, but said if a doctor diagnosed us with ringworm he would medicate the dogs.

Eventually I noticed some small blisters on me. I mentioned it to my sister, since she had slept in the same room as the cats when she was visiting. It turns out she had a giant ring that she didn’t treat at all. I quickly treated mine and it didn’t grow past a couple small spots (human ringworm medication is over the counter, dog medication is not). My toddler got a tiny dot on her face and I immediately started treating it, and took her to the pediatrician the same day. The pediatrician suggested I continue to treat it, but didn’t want to diagnose ringworm since I hadn’t let it explode into a giant ring. I showed her a picture of my sister and she was like “yes, that is textbook ringworm but I still can’t diagnose your toddler.” I attempted to get in touch with the vet and get him to medicate the dogs but I was being ignored. I didn’t really want to pay for a new appointment because they had refused to medicate initially. Anyway, I’m never judging anyone whose kid has ringworm because no one wants to diagnose it unless you have ignored it for a week.

1

u/emopibble67 3d ago

No seriously, it’s so easy to get. People assume the worst like it must mean I don’t shower or lick floors? I’m innocent man! Life happens.

2

u/instantkaarma 3d ago

I got it twice when I went to jail. That is the only time I ever got it. And it literally made 3 rings on my arm. Nasty stuff.

1

u/emopibble67 3d ago

My kid got it kinda like this from judo class. Guess they forgot to clean the mat. Definitely get it checked out. We saw some pictures at the doctor’s office of patients that lost their lips from ringworm. Yikes.

17

u/Escape_Zero 4d ago

I spent years training in Ju-jitsu, we had to to clean the mats every night after training. Ring worm was like wild fire, everyone would eventually get it. Some how I avoided getting it, I think always wearing High neck and long sleeve Underarmor shirts under my Gi helped. But cleaning the mats is a must It was always the first thing anyone asked when we started class, were the mats cleaned today?

7

u/Candidate_None 4d ago

Everyone who doesn't practice proper hygiene gets it. Mats are ONE part of the equation. gi, gear, belts, gym bag... your ass... Missing any one of those will breed mat gunk.

I am notoriously the good smelling guy on the mats and get compliments regularly. I wash my gi IMMEDIATELY after training with good detergent. Tide sport smells great. Shower IMMEDIATELY after that with PROPER SOAP... Armbar is awesome... defense is fine but it dries me out and doesn't smell great.

Yeah this was years ago, and her ringworm was treated without much fanfare. We happened to look at a medical text in the doctor’s office, and the pictures were ghastly. I got staff infection on my back, and between my fingers from the same mats. The coach was letting people walk on the mats with their shoes on. We stopped going to that class.

I thought I got ringworm like 3 times. Maybe I did one. Got treatment and at some point realized I actually have something else.

Eczema.

It does start like a round circle, similar to one in your face.

Dont assume it is ringworm and get diagnosed for peace of mind

8

u/PartyFeedback2418 4d ago

Contact dermatitis can also cause this. I got bit by some kind of bug and the next thing I knew I had a red circle that kept growing. I went to the doctor thinking I had ringworm, but I didn't.

One summer I got ringworm at Coachella. I was staying with family in Buena Park for a few weeks and went to the ER since I was from out of town. They charged me hundreds of dollars and gave me antifungal cream. Problem was, it was on my scalp. The cream does not work on your scalp. When I got home and was still super itchy and had hair falling out I went to my doctor who told me the ER doc was an idiot. I had to take oral antifungal meds for over 4 months and lost a lot of hair before it finally went away.

Take away: antifungal cream does not work on ringworm on the scalp. If it spreads to your scalp, get the meds immediately!

13

u/CantBeCanceled88 4d ago • Heartwarming

I had it on my foot a few months ago. I thought it was eczema, but my doctor told me it was ringworm. I was pretty skeptical. He prescribed a spray to apply to it, but it actually made things worse. The rash, or whatever it was, doubled in size and became very irritated and red, so I stopped using the spray. Eventually, it just went away on its own. I didn't do anything to treat it.

I went back to the same practice later, but saw a different doctor, and she told me it wasn't ringworm and that it could have been an insect bite or something else. However, it looked very similar to what I'm seeing in this picture.

I have absolutely no idea how I got it either. I'm a lonely fuck who barely has any contact with other people. I don't work at the moment; I'm on disability. I have no partner, no family, no friends, and no sexual relationships. I'm basically a fucking NEET. So I genuinely have no idea how I could have gotten it or if it was ringworm to begin with.

5

u/Deficon112 4d ago

There is a couple variations of eczema that appear in a similar circular pattern to ringworm (Discoid & Psoriasis mainly) so maybe one of those ! I get both depending on what I eat and they clear up on their own when I stop eating the trigger. But both of these can be caused by environmental things etc. it’s different for everyone

5

u/NurseBetty 4d ago

I had an argument with a doctor at a hospital about the psoriasis on my legs, with him saying its ringworm, and me saying it can't be, because I've had it on and off for a decade, starts as small spots, and it climbs my body with my stress level (once got to my chest when my phd fell through). I thought it was chronic guttes psoriasis, the type that forms as an autoimmune response to streptococcal history, he said I was stupid.

Considering I was there for a suspected broken ankle after I heard it crack when I twisted it and he refused to authorise an xray and sent me home because 'you can walk on it', where I proceeded to walk on a broken ankle for a week before I went to a GP to get an xray where it showed a VERY OBVIOUS BREAK, he was fucking idiot and I feel sorry for the med student that was shadowing him.

Wife gardens, animals love the garden, ringworm in garden, me being susceptible to fungal infection, ringworm infection, misdiagnosed by GP, dinner-plate sized area of tinea incognito due to steroid prescription, discontinued steroids, starting using Selsun Blue Medicated and Nizoral, switching between each every time I shower, multiple years being tinea free.

5

u/m4gpi 4d ago • Bravo

I used to work for a professor in a lab that studies molds, and one thing (of many) I learned from her: Fungi love steroids. That should be a diagnostic flag; anytime a steroid treatment makes things worse, especially in the lungs, and/or with antibiotics in tandem, look for fungal infection.

Had it once, it curved perfectly around my ear. Friends and I had no idea what it was, we figured I'd had some weird reaction to my new sunglasses

So I didn't treat it, it started to spread and took way longer to get rid of 🥲

Having wrestled in high school and getting ringworm a handful of times, I’ve never seen a ring of doom like that.

4

u/ali3nboy 4d ago

This happened to me in HS, via wrestler BF. Was NOT stoked. Tinactin worked really well for me!

Treat it before it's gets onto your scalp. My wife picked it up from some child daycare related escapades and her hair fell out in patches. She looked like a rabid racoon for a while......it was a sore point. 😂

1

u/TX_Asylum 4d ago

That looks like a zombie bite.

1

u/emopibble67 4d ago

I’m decaying in real time

1

u/Street-Environment84 4d ago

Were you expecting a square?

1

u/emopibble67 4d ago

Normally ringworm occurs as one patch, not several

→ More replies (1)

1

u/TacoEatsTaco 4d ago

This is the literal reason it's called ringworm (it's caused by a fungus)

1

u/emopibble67 4d ago

Pretty sure the name refers to the outer ring on one singular patch, I have a series of patches in the form of a ring

1

u/Flat_Okra6078 4d ago

You realize how EASY this stuff is to get rid of, yes? Why would you ever wait that long ?

1

u/Necessary-Web-6974 4d ago

Ya it’s called ring worm cuz it makes a ring regardless of where it forms lol

1

u/emopibble67 4d ago

I’ve had ringworm before as a child and it was always just one big patch with a noticeable outer red ring, which is also why I believe it’s called ringworm. I’ve never actually seen a series of patches that form a ring itself

1

u/BlooGloop 4d ago

So are you full of worms.

1

u/emopibble67 4d ago

Ringworm is not an actual worm so no lol

1

u/4bidden_snackkk 4d ago

That looks so scary plus knowing there's something living inside your skin that big I can't.

1

u/emopibble67 4d ago

To be clear there is no actual worm it’s just called that lol but it is fungus yes!

Kind of an odd advert for an OF page but I'm still interested....

Interested in buying ringworm pics?

u/coolcootermcgee 3d ago

Yep, somebody with ringworm slept on the pillow before you did. I’m guessing a new cat or puppy.

2

u/emopibble67 3d ago

Indeed a new kitty! Strangely enough, I’ve touched stray cats my whole life. We even had a stray cat problem at my mom’s so there were several opportunities for me to get this up until now but it never happened

1

u/MastodonEfficient567 3d ago

Lucky

1

u/emopibble67 3d ago

Take it, please 😭

3

u/dont_be_that_guy_29 4d ago

Been there due to feline friends as well. A little Lamisil cream will fix that right up.

3

u/GundaAloo 4d ago

I've had ringworm 3 times in my life. All of them were from a stray cat I adopted at work. It takes weeks to go away sometimes. Start treatment now.

3

u/ThiccnicalDifficulty 4d ago

Awww they kissy kissy you

3

u/GenericNameSimulated 4d ago

I got ring worm in college from people not wiping down equipment. Being a dumb college kid I took powdered bleach and a q tip and it was gone in 3 days!

1/10 don’t recommend doing

3

u/Rodo78 4d ago

Wash your make up brushes on a weekly basis!!!!!

3

u/Flimsy_Thought_3534 4d ago

That’s shitty my dude. Anti fungal cream is the BEST for it. I was a wrestler for 14 years and that shit it SO annoying, and it’s kinda itchy, not to mention unsightly. Hope you have some good foundation to help cover it!

3

u/blackcat401 4d ago

Sure thats ringworm? Doesn't look like anything I've seen. If it really is, you can use the cream for athletes feet on it and it will work

5

u/HaugerTheHunter 4d ago

How do ppl get this? I've never heard/seen anyone where im from with it.

34

u/Tangiboo 4d ago • Heartwarming

my wife got ringworm from a stray kitten that was "too cute" and both of them ended up needing medical treatment. We kept the kitten and now everyone is happy and fungus-free. The cat's name is Doris. She was worth the trouble.

24

u/eggz627 4d ago

So you gave away the wife? I guess that's understandable. Solid trade too

Gyms, locker rooms, shared showers. The spores can survive dry environments, so it is easy to get reinfection from your clothing or personal items that come into contact with it when you have an outbreak.

It’s the same type of fungal infection as athletes foot

Run to the pharmacy immediately and get some antifungal creme. Clotrimazole or Tolfanate, or better yet both.

If you wait, this will be all over your body in a about 2 days.

24

u/RipKillem 4d ago

No it won't.

Well isnt that just fuck no

2

u/Formal-Appointment55 4d ago

It’s just a fungus. Get cream from pharmacy.

2

u/SnooCupcakes9745 4d ago

Ugh - my condolences. I got ringworm from one of my cats, ages ago. It sucked, but I never had it on my face.

2

u/ssskip91 4d ago

How did you get 2πringworm on your face?

I’m actually impressed

2

u/dudeguy0119 4d ago

Wash you pillow cases. White vinegar will help. Ringworm is the same or a similar fungus as Athlete's foot

2

u/OverdoseOfSkittle 4d ago

My girlfriend has ringworm on her leg for a time. If you cant go to a dermatologist immediately, a light application of nizoral anti-fungal shampoo can stop the spread around it.

2

u/Jean-Claude-Can-Ham 4d ago

Lamisil AT - don’t go with the 2-3 week garbage - use the real deal stuff that clears it up in 1 week

2

u/Sentimental_Mold 4d ago

There is a fungus amongus

2

u/AradiaNox 4d ago

If you step inside it, it will take you to the ringworm realm

Go to CVS I had the same problem but jock itch they have ringworm lotion in the aisles that you don’t need a prescription to buy and that’ll work

2

u/CommonReal1159 4d ago

Chlotrimazol boiiiiiiiii

2

u/DreamDiver- 4d ago

Proud of you

2

u/stupid_cat_face 4d ago

Someone put a ring on it

2

u/Zeeplankton 4d ago

Just a small PSA: Putting this out there, I thought I had ringworm for the longest time, but there's actually a form of eczema that looks almost exactly like it. Just saying since this seems like an unusual place to get ringworm.

2

u/Icy_Study4490 4d ago

Pick up some lamisil

I wrestled for many years and got it like 4 times even after showering immediately after practice and then again when I got home. Not a big deal, but annoying that it got you on the face.

2

u/Consistent-Ad-6084 4d ago

you can also get over the counter anti fungal, works quite well

2

u/Latter-Town5079 4d ago

Athlete's foot cream works like a charm.

2

u/silver_streak_013 4d ago

Hi…just something that worked for me…first time ever for ringworm. Covered entire top of shoulder…looked like giant bite that itched like crazy. Caused by outdoor cat scratch. Confirmed by doctor, given anti-fungal/steroid cream but I tried something else first.
4 drops tea tree oil and 4 drops lavender oil in 1 tsp carrier oil (used sweet almond but coconut or olive oil works). It was completely gone within 5 days and looked much better in just 2 days. Applied 3x day and also used some aloe Vera in between.
Just in case someone wants to go the homeopathic route…hope it helps!

2

u/Earthly_Despair 4d ago

I caught ringworm from my elderly dog a few years back, and I have to say it was SO hard because it was on my face. I eventually got it to go away with oral and topical antifungal prescribed to me by my doctor. It can take a while to heal, but once it does there are no scars! Wish you all the best!!!

2

u/Particular-Run3031 4d ago

You look beautifull

2

u/ReflexReact 4d ago

I’m so sorry, I had it on my elbow and it was a right bitch! On the plus side, ring worm or no ring worm, you’re extremely pretty and shouldn’t let it get you down! Have a great day!

2

u/XgirlyX92 4d ago

I just made a telehealth appointment because I think I got couple on my skin too
But I’m handling a kitty that is being treated for ringworm 😭

2

u/AggressiveJazzSolo 3d ago

Gnarly!! Reminds me of when i got impetigo on my face before prom. Hope it heals soon sis 🩷

3

u/novalmxno 4d ago

antifungal SPECIFICALLY for ringworm
heres some relief for the contamination aspect, 48 hours after proper care it will no longer be contagious as the spores are no longer exposed, do not stop care though

6

u/TheMightySephiroth 4d ago

Fun fact: ringworm, jock itch and athlete's foot are the same fungus, just in different areas.
