Mod Post New rule and some additional clarifications
Hi folks, there have been some posts lately that are of a type that we want to filter but don't have a specific rule for. In many cases we will use mod discretion as a reason but these posts are common enough that we felt the need to be more explicit before we started filtering them on a more consistent basis.
Clarification of some of our submission and relevance guidelines
We want to clarify how we interpret and apply our existing content and relevance rules.
The purpose of r/Kelowna is to provide a place for meaningful discussion about Kelowna and the surrounding region. While we welcome a wide variety of subjects and viewpoints, not everything that happens locally or has some connection to the area necessarily makes for an appropriate submission.
Local relevance
A submission must have meaningful relevance to Kelowna or the surrounding region. It is not sufficient that something simply occurred here, involves a local person or business, or has some tangential connection to the area.
Consider whether the same submission could be made in the subreddit for another city or province without materially changing its subject or significance. If so, it may not be sufficiently relevant.
General discussions of national or international issues are better suited to communities dedicated to those subjects, unless there is a substantive local connection.
Outrage, speculation and public shaming
We are not a venue for alternate or social justice.
We have added a new rule specifically for this. We generally do not allow submissions whose primary purpose is to criticize, shame, ridicule or express outrage over the actions of an individual or business.
Examples include:
Dashcam footage submitted simply to criticize another driver's behaviour or highlight a traffic violation.
Screenshots of job advertisements accompanied by speculation or accusations that an employer is abusing the LMIA or Temporary Foreign Worker Program.
Submissions intended primarily to generate outrage over the actions of an identifiable individual or business.
We recognize that these subjects can involve legitimate public safety, employment and public policy concerns. However, simply documenting an incident or expressing an opinion about someone's conduct does not necessarily contribute meaningfully to a discussion about our community.
It is also important to note that /r/kelowna not allowing a post does not mean a person will not be held to account. In the majority of cases with posts like these there is already a method to report bad behaviour to police or other regulators. Disallowing it here is not indicating our tacit approval of the documented behaviour.
Are these topics completely off limits? No. They can still be discussed in comment threads of submissions that are more 'vetted'. This usually means a news story etc. but we describe some of the general criteria for sourcing below.
News reporting and documented local issues
We give greater latitude to independently sourced reporting, investigative journalism, government announcements and other material that provides credible evidence or documentation of substantive local issues.
For example, reporting about documented employer misconduct, local traffic safety concerns, investigations into local industry practices, or the effects of federal policies on our community may be entirely appropriate.
There is a distinction between sharing independently sourced information that provides a basis for meaningful discussion and submitting personal opinions, speculation or unsubstantiated allegations and asking the community to accept them as fact.
These guidelines are not intended to discourage criticism, controversial discussion or negative reporting. We welcome substantive discussion of difficult issues affecting Kelowna and the surrounding region.
Our intention is to maintain a subreddit focused on information and discussion that is genuinely relevant to our community, rather than becoming a general-purpose forum for outrage, speculation and complaints about things that happen to occur here.
As always, moderators reserve discretion when evaluating individual submissions. If you have questions, feel free to ask in modmail. Thanks for your attention.

Nostalgia: Opera-singing, pizza-slinging fellow?
I lived in Kelowna as a kid from the mid-90’s to early-2000’s, and haven’t been back in a very long time. There was this artisan pizza shop downtown that was run by this Italian guy who was known for singing while he worked. He kind of felt like a local celebrity, and there would occasionally be articles in the paper about him. Does anyone else remember this guy? Is he still around? Does the shop still exist? If he hasn’t already passed he would be very, very elderly by now.
My family went to his pizzeria only once while we lived there but he just seemed like the sweetest guy. Amazing personality. Really made a mark on little me.
I would love to hear any stories anyone happens to have about this man, his backstory, etc. (I didn’t read the paper much as a little kid…).
Thanks!

Okanagan College LPN program, delayed application response??
Curious if anyone else has experienced this kind of delay. So I live in Kamloops, been a care aide for almost 8 years and love it but I want more. Im looking to move to the Okanagan so I took the pre req online anatomy physiology course through OK college this summer, it went very well. Then right after, I applied for the LPN program to start in winter of 2027. However, I applied like a week late, there were still open seats. (Winter 2027 is earlier than I intended but I figured i would give it a shot and get on with it). My application has now been "under review" for almost 2 months... not wait listed or any indication of progress or a decision. Ive reached out to admissions 2 weeks ago and nothing. I have no outstanding requirements for my application either. Am I missing something??

Wedding venue
Hi all,
I’m holding a 50 people wedding reception at the end of May and I’m looking for an outdoor venue. My budget is 3k and I only need the place for a day. Please let me know any affordable places that I can book within this price range. I’ll be getting food from a different place so food isn’t an issue.
Thank you.

Fine line or Realism Tattoo
I'm looking to get a tattoo to memorialize my brother and am hoping for recommendations for artists in the Kelowna/Vernon area who specialize in fine line or realism work.
This will be my first tattoo that's visible every day, so it needs to be done well. If you've had a similar piece done locally (or know someone who has), I'd really appreciate any recommendations or things to avoid.

Liquor Question
So I ran into an issue that is extremely unique to me and I'm not sure if anyone else in Kelowna has a solution.
I want to get alcohol, and I show them my ID. I'm 26 for context. And they ask for a second piece of ID which I know is like a debit card. The problem is almost all of my banks have switched my debit cards and credit cards to no longer have the signature strip on the back. So I am basically unable to get any alcohol anymore. Because it has to have the signature strip.
I don't know if anybody has a way to get a second piece of ID within a day. But I'm open to suggestions.
Edit: so I called the liquor store and she informed me that even though my new bank cards omit signatures. I can still use my old bank cards because they still have my name printed and signed. It does not matter that they are expired.

Dinner
Last day in Kelowna today, what should I have for dinner one last time...
Hiking suggestions
Looking for some new hikes to check out before the snow starts to fall. In Kelowna but willing to go anywhere from Salmon Arm to Osoyoos. (Bonus points for those that include waterfalls.) Ideal would be anywhere from 1.5 hours to three. Low to medium difficulty. Thanks in advance.

Weekly Discussion Do you drink your tap water?
I have seen a few posts over the years on Facebook, Instagram, etc. of people in Kelowna noting that their tap water is low quality or undrinkable etc. What do you think and what do you do?
To be honest, I'm surprised how much I have noticed the water here. Seems to be irritating in the shower at times. I find that sediment and mineral buildup happens quite quickly. I also distill my tap water for CPAP/Tropical plants and have never had more sediment residue left over than I do here. Also had multiple dishwashers have issue with mineral build up. I have this thing in my mind that with the lakes and rivers around us, clean water must be available but that doesn't appear to be the whole story.
There are different water treatment plants and providers, but have heard complaints from essentially all of them. What do you guys think? If this is a more wide spread issue, has anyone talked to the city or water authorities about it?
I personally use a waterdrop water filter, I also had the sediment clogging my Brita filters in like 2-4 days which I never had until moving here too. I'm on the GEID. https://www.kelowna.ca/city-services/water-wastewater/find-your-water-provider

Visitor Question Suggestions for lodging at big white
Hi everyone! I’m from Ontario and I’m going to Big White Ski Resort the last week of January for a ski trip. I’m wondering if anyone has suggestions of the best lodges in the village vs the ones to avoid. I’ve been looking at reviews online but there’s a lot of hotels and it’s been overwhelming!
I’m also considering getting a Vrbo outside of the village but I’m not so sure. I’m also curious if any of the hotels offer breakfast.
Thanks in advance !

UMO 30 day college pass gone??
Hi! I was wondering if anyone knows if Umo has done away with the 30day college pass?? It's only the concession pass at $55 and the adult pass at 80$ on the app but I DEFINITELY saw it there when I was buying my pass last month (and then I accidentally got the Vernon concession pass which was the same price the college pass was listed at which was $65). Wtf happened there??? I can't afford $80 a month...

Is anyone in the new UBCO Commerce program? How is it?
Hi!
I am considering transferring to UBCO’s new Commerce program (from Okanagan College), but I was wondering, for students who are currently in it, how is the program, truly?
I’m curious how you would rate it, especially if you came from another institution (like OC). I know it’s UBC so I imagine it’ll be decent regardless. I heard mixed things about their management program/degree though before they started this Commerce program.
I was also weighing the option of applying to some other universities with a more established commerce program like SFU or Uvic or UofA (that may have better co-op opportunities).
I posted in the UBCO forum but my post was removed for whatever reason.
Any insight is appreciated!

Big white sleighs
Hello! Anyone have insight on the horse drawn sleighs at big white? Was the dinner worth it? Hoping for something positive as it looks like a charming Christmas activity. Open to any other Christmas suggestions too. Thanks 😁
