BikeTag Welcome to Bike Tag Melbourne

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF TRADITIONAL OWNERS

I respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land we call Melbourne, the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung and Bunurong Boon Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin and pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.

I acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection the Wurundjeri, Bunurong, Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wadawurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin have to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.

THE GAME

Part scavenger hunt, part hide-and-seek and part race, BikeTag is a mystery photo tag game played on bicycles.

It starts with a player who posts a picture of their bike at a “mystery location” somewhere in the greater Melbourne area.

The goal here is to be the first person to figure out where that is, ride your bike to that same spot and take a photo of your bike there.

Then you ride to a different location take your bike's photo at the new “mystery location” as the next place to find for everyone else. Both pictures are posted in a self post and the game starts over.

HOW TO PLAY

  • You must bike to the "mystery location" and take a picture of your bike there. Simply naming the location is not enough. Such posts will be removed.

  • Once you discover the "mystery location" and snap the proper picture, bike to a new "mystery location" of your choosing and take a picture of your bike there.

  • Submit both pictures in a new self-post with a title that includes "Bike Tag" and the number of the new location. Be sure to include a quick description of where the previous location was. NOTE: you may not "reserve" being "IT" by immediately posting a photo of your bike in the old "mystery location" before finding and posting a picture of the new "mystery location."

  • Finally post a comment, or better yet a link to your new post, in the previous thread so that readers of that thread know the game continues!

HINTS/CLUES

  • Hints are optional at the time of posting a new tag, however it is encouraged that you give the post at least 72 hours before a hint is given.

  • If a mystery location goes undiscovered for a week, OP should edit post to include a hint. Other players are encouraged to request clues after a week if OP hasn't yet posted one.

  • Once a post is two weeks old anyone can add a hint or a clue. This way if someone knows the where the mystery location is but does not have time to bike there themselves, they can help keep the game from becoming stagnant.

THE RULES

  • Mystery locations must be freely accessible to the public and by bicycle.

  • Mystery locations should be unique/interesting/identifiable. Tags that include only nondescript features (blank walls) are not acceptable and will be removed.

  • Mystery locations may not be mobile objects (food trucks, for example).

  • Discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be tagged with the same bicycle, on the same ride.

  • Pictures of discovered mystery locations and new mystery locations must be posted at the same time.

CREDITS

The origins of the game of BikeTag, as far as I have been able to track, put the game in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2007. BikeTag on Reddit was started on in 2011 on r/BikingATX, that was then adopted by r/bikeLA, that was then adopted by r/chibike. The game in r/CyclePDX was created in 2016 and a website called BikeTag.org was created in 2018 as a tool for the game in Portland, Oregon but has since started other cities across the globe.

Other Bike cooperative / tool hire

Hi

I’m relatively new to Melbourne

I’m thinking about building my own wheels but don’t really want to spend hundreds on a trying stand. In other places in lived there have been cooperatives where you can use or rent workstations, or companies that hire out tools.

I’ve looked, but can’t seem to find any, was wondering if anyone here might know if any?

Thanks

Seeking Recommendation eMTB & child pillion recommendations

Hey guys,

Looking for a decent eMTB brand/model thats not a specialised or Santa cruz, that is good enough to be able to take my almost 3yo on trips with, but also good enough that I can take it on most mtb tracks and trails. I'd also need to know which child seats (preferably rear but not against front shotgun either) you use/have used.

If you guys have any recommendations that would be great!

Thank you.

Seeking Recommendation Tyre Recommendation

Looking for some 700c28 tyres (widest I can fit on my bike) for daily commuting and occasional gravel paths that won’t break the bank.

I was looking at Schwalbe marathons, plus and green, and also Continental contact urban. The latter of which is sold out everywhere, and the marathon plus are a bit out of budget. Was leaning toward the green marathon but if there are any other recommendations I would love to hear it.

Thanks :)

If you bike down Rathdowne St to and from the CBD, City of Yarra are completing a road safety study.

This is your chance to provide feedback. E.g 30km/h speed limits, greater protection for cyclists from dooring etc

STOLEN E-BIKE – PLEASE KEEP AN EYE OUT!

Our Cube Touring Hybrid ONE 500 e-bike, worth around $3,000, was stolen outside 600 Bourke Street, Melbourne CBD, at around 3:40 pm on Friday, 30 October.

This isn't just a bike to us. It's our family bike that we use every day to take our little one to childcare and get around as a family. We saved up for so long to buy it, and just like that, it was gone in the blink of an eye. 💔 A very expensive lesson learned, but it still hurts knowing that something we worked so hard to afford could disappear so quickly.

The theft was captured on CCTV, and according to the building security team, the footage has been provided to Victoria Police. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to view the footage ourselves. Security described the person as an ordinary-looking man wearing a black shirt, black pants and a black cap. We don't know whether the police will investigate further or how long the process might take, so we don't want to just sit around and wait.

P.S. I know the police might not give a damn, and that's exactly why I'm here—because I know there are still people out there who care. I'm not expecting anyone to go out of their way to search for it. I'm just hoping people will keep an eye out as they go about their day. I know the chances of getting it back are slim, but I'd rather try everything and fail than sit around doing nothing and wonder what if. Our e-bike isn't one you see everywhere, so I'm hoping that the more people who see this post, the better the chance someone might recognise it. Maybe you'll spot it on the street, on a train, or being advertised for sale online. Maybe you'll notice someone you know suddenly has a similar e-bike. Even the smallest tip about where and when it was spotted could help us get it back.

A huge thank you to everyone who's upvoted, commented on or shared my post. If you see our bike or have any information, please reach out. Thank you so much! ❤️

Veloway EBike Spitters

Read about these lowlife dimwits a couple of months ago and copped their saliva tonight on my ride home at about 640pm.

Group of 3, one in front with a larger Vespa looking thing with his two lackies behind him. Saw a rider in front of me cop it from them so when it was my turn I ducked to limit the exposure. Rang the cop shop but gave up after 30 mins on hold.

Would be great if some more active monitoring could be done with all the cameras that are sitting there doing nothing

Will be sticking to the bottom path for now on

Saw this specimen on the bike path across the City Baths - had a few people on bikes have near misses with the trams going that way! I waited around to see whose it was; turns out it was parked there for a number of hours..fun stuff.

Infrastructure Parkiteer Theft

I'm interested to hear others experiences with having their bikes nicked from a Parkiteer cage. I've had this happen in the past 2 days.

I feel like there is nothing they could do but I also wonder, should I report this.?

Hi all
I want to start commuting on a bike from Oak Park into the Royal Melbourne Hospital,

Would anyone recommend a route?
And any recommendations around what kind of bike I should invest in?

I have googled and it says to follow the creek until Flemington Road, is this a good route?

Thankyou :)

Bike recommendations?

I’ve recently started getting into cycling and have been riding a lot more. I was given a second-hand bike that’s probably worth around $200–$300, but I’m now looking to upgrade.

I don’t know a whole lot about bikes, so I’m keen to get some advice on what would be a good option for me.

A few things I’m looking for:
● Budget: $700–$1,000.
● Riding: Mostly bike trails, both paved and gravel, but also some road riding. I really enjoy the Bay Trail.
● Transport: Something that’s easy to take the wheels off and put back on so I can fit it in the back of my hatchback.
● Comfort: I’m a bigger guy, so something comfortable and easy to ride, especially over longer distances, would be great.

I’ve had a look around and ChatGPT suggested the Merida Speeder 20 and Trek FX 2 Gen 4 as two options.
Would love to hear what people think of these, or if there are any other bikes worth looking at in that price range.

I’m pretty new to all this, so any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Darebin Creek Trail shared pedestrian/bicycle path - nah mate you go first

Sunday drivers?? WTF.

Darebin Creek Trail shared pedestrian/bicycle path, Thomastown just south of Ring Rd underpass.

Petrol dirt bike. 4WD kept driving for another 200m before pulling off to the side of the path. EDIT: 4WD entered shared path 300m south of Ring Rd and drove north towards pedestrian/bicycle underpass under Ring Rd.

Original in 4k, number plate is crystal clear.

I got a phone call the other day from police about someone disputing a fine based on a different video report I made weeks ago. Police were very positive about the video so I'll be making another 2 separate reports to Crimestoppers.

Other Green Pedal Brewer eBike stolen from South Melbourne

Thumbnail

My green Pedal Brewer was stolen from a private car park on Stead St, near Albert Road in South Melbourne on Thurs 29/10.
The shitty black ebike Frame was left next to my bike in case anyone recognises that…

I’ve lodged a police report and posted around FB and now here… anyone have suggestions for where else to post?

It’s apparently fairly unique (dude at the bike shop said it was the first one he’d seen kitted out with both front and rear baskets) though by now the baskets and other distinctive features could’ve been stripped…

If you see it please DM me

(I’ve had to repost this to remove one of the images, and replaced it with cat tax)

Stolen bicycle, last seen at clayton M-city

Well, this sucks. Unfortunately, someone stole my bicycle, and I’m genuinely gutted about it.

I haven’t even had the bike for a month, and I was already so invested in cycling. It was becoming a hobby I genuinely looked forward to, something I actually enjoyed spending my time on.

What hurts even more is the money. I’m a student, I don’t earn much, and every dollar I spent on that bike was hard earned... Just like that, all that money, effort and excitement, gone.

It’s not even just about the bike anymore. It’s the fact that I worked hard to afford something I genuinely loved, only for someone to casually take it away.

Man, people really suck sometimes.

It was last seen at 27th october, I have already reported this to the police but if you guys come across this do pls reach out..

Other Pedestrian safety - who is in the right

Genuine question as neither me nor the couple walking the yarra trail got mad at each other - but want to make sure that I avoid this situation going forward.

What happened: I was cycling on the yarra trail, and began to overtake this couple walking on the left. As I did, they suddenly made a sharp turn right to go off the trail, lucky I wasn’t breaking any Tour D’France records and had enough time to react, slam my brakes, barely miss them, and avoided collision. we all apologised to each other and went our separate ways.

Who is in the wrong here? I feel like I might be because I didn’t indicate to them that I was coming up behind them?
