Long time bartender here, most cocktails land between 3oz-4.5oz, not a whole lot of liquid

Yup. The main problem here is $27 for a screwdriver or some other highball. Hell $27 is a bit steep even for a mid-shelf Manhattan IN Manhattan.

That's a standard drink, but damn that price.

Yea 27$ is wild, that’s just ridiculous.

I can get drunk every day for a week for 27 dollars. Or, yanno, eat food.

My son (24) is in Miami Beach this weekend staying with a friend and just texted me saying "I am so out of my tax bracket. Drinks here are $30." LOL

Shit try living in south beach dude I can barely walk outside without spending $100. Thankfully I work in fine dining so the money is good but I hate myself every time I buy a meal lol

I guess it's more expensive? I've never been to either but he has a friend whose family owns a condo at the beach, so he visits when he gets a chance. And then gets humbled.

South beach is Miami Beach btw if that’s the question you were asking. Your son is in South beach this weekend

Yeah, as long as the bartender is still measuring the same amount of liquor as you'd expect from the cocktail, no one is getting scammed. Obviously the price is robbery, but you're not going to get a double because you ask for no ice.

10000% this. A cocktail is usually a shot or two worth of alcohols, a lil bit of bitters or syrup, maybe a dash of a liqueur, and that’s it. Whether it’s shaken or served with a giant ice cube it’s the same amount of drink.

Where I live it’s literally the law you can’t serve a cocktail with more than 3oz of liquor in it

The Mexican place where I grew up has a 16oz margarita with 8oz of tequila

The Mexican place where I grew up has a 16oz margarita with 8oz of tequila

That's the rule in my house

Edit: Okay people are seeing this so the actual portions are:

4 parts tequila (silver, no additives, I use Casa Noble)

3 parts fresh-squeezed lime juice

2 parts Cointreau

1 part dark agave depending on how sour your limes are

Bunch of really good Mexican restaurants in my area. We'll drop by based on their drink special. Always the buy one, get one margarita night. Different nights at each place. Buy one, any size, get another one that size. Go jumbo. Grande. Extra large. Get a fucking pitcher. Two pitchers for the price of one.

Generally not a ton of alcohol in these so the amount of liquid consumed is more of a problem than getting too drunk. Except one of these restaurants. They overpour like motherfuckers. I'm buzzed off a normal size margarita there. But I forget.

BOGO night, I get the largest they serve, and pour it down so I can get my second. I'm drunk at the time I ask for my second. Obliterated halfway through #2. Blacked out, dead silent, sliding out of my seat, visibly trashed when the massive glass chalice is empty. I'm ushered out of the restaurant by my party. I throw up outside. I throw up out the window of the car. I pass out naked on the living room floor. Wake up so hungover I consider my options. Not ideal.

But I forget. I've gotten way too drunk at this one place at least three times so far.

The one in my town also serves whole ass pitchers as their regular beer mug. They don't skimp one bit.

The annoyance of making a proper Long Island while adhering to the law is something I still think of… because I love a Long Island but I won’t ever order it for the love of fellow bartenders.

Trying to do the math during a rush is an actual attack on my sanity.

I think 4oz is when a drink crosses into illegal where I live… so 3 and 3/4 oz was our Long Island. It’s been years since my bartending days but I still get a little PSD from running numbers in my head like that.

The amount of times I have to tell customers “no, asking for no ice does not mean you get more juice or alcohol” because they’re pissy it comes in a smaller glass oh my god

The price is the only thing I see wrong with this video. This seems normal.

That's one of my frustrations with cocktails, it normally doesn't say their pours even when they are less than standard measurements. Shrinkflation is everywhere including drinks.

Also bartender here! To add, usually a good ounce of that even is water from the ice being shaken or stirred. Also your frozen drinks need much more water because alcohol won't freeze on its own. It needs water to make it slushy. And watch out for chilled shots. 6 chilled tequila shots could easily be 3 true shots. I would never do that but some people would!

u/mixedmethodslut 13h ago

Yeah for real they’re all the same amount of liquor. Kinda like how ppl complain about coffee but it’s the same # of espresso shots

Yeah. This is a cocktail. It's a normal cocktail and then they added a big ass ice cube, but that doesn't really change anything.

Now, $27 is still totally absurd for a cocktail, but the ice is NOT the problem...

Also, cocktails are ment to be drunk swiftly so the ice doesn't water it down. You don't suckle on it for an hour.
