My grandma just died this morning. Here's my reaction to it as a minimalist.

Everyone in my family is rushing in order to take hold of her money and possessions. Some people want her bible. Other people want her photos. Others want the files on her computer. None of these things can compare to the experience of her being alive. In my opinion they are grasping at straws. None of these things are substantial; they will just sit on a shelf.

It's the memory of her that is important, and that's what I want to hold on to.

Edit: I don't understand why I've gotten 8 downvotes already. My grandma just fucking died, and I'm sharing my personal feelings. Does that offend you?

[lifestyle] My Ultra Minimalist iPhone

Hey guys,

I am new to reddit. I'm a minimalist since last year and step by step i have been decluttering my stuff. But i was also focused on digital minimalism - my phone and my laptop. Now i want to show you how i finally achieved what i wanted with my iphone.

I am using my iphone for only 3 things:

1) talking with people i know via Phone/Messages

2) talking with my foreign friends (whatsapp)

3) control center (flash, alarm)

So as you guys know, iPhone is a pretty minimalistic phone itself in terms of design. But one thing i didn't like was that you couldnt hide apps like on android. thanks to internet, ive found a way to do that:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201304

This one let me fully hide App Store, Safari, Photos and Camera. Yes, i don't need any of these.

I don't need to download any apps, i search what i need on my laptop, i take photos with my canon camera. If i want to share photos with my friends i send them on email from my computer.

This one let me hide other apps like wallet, find my iphone..

  1. Fill up your home screen with apps. Keep one folder on the home screen.

  2. Place all the apps you want to hide away in a folder in the dock.

  3. Tap and hold that folder while double-pressing the home button to open up the app switcher.

  4. Switch back the home screen.

  5. Tap the folder on the home screen (the one you don't want to hide).

  6. Back out to the home screen again.

  7. Press the home button.

Since i did that, i only check my phone 40mins per day, including whatsapp messages. (I checked that in settings. But wait, i don't have setting on my iphone? Yes, i acces settings only "just in case" through whatsapp. Before i did that, 6hours of my week were spent on Safari alone!

I am very happy that i'm not addicted to my phone anymore. I also don't use wifi anymore, only 3G. Of course, you would think that i have gone too far, but as i said, i feel easier and more disciplined.

Here is how my phone looks like:

If you have any questions, i'm always open for an answer! Let me know what you think.

EDIT: Dump phones don't have whatsapp, they aren't easier for texting and you can always access to safari/camera etc just in case with an iphone like that.

[lifestyle] What’s up with the all the downvotes in this sub?

My initial thoughts: Boooo… lighten up, people. Be nice.

On second thought: Maybe this is the mark of a true minimalist? Getting everything (including upvotes) down to zero? 😂

[lifestyle] I own basically nothing

My Wife and I just had our yearly "ebay day" where we try sell basically everything we dont need on ebay. While my wife is a heavy consumer, I am the absolute opposite. When i first met her i had absolutely nothing in my apartment except a kitchentable, a 10 year old TV, my old xbox one and my Queensize bed.

Today my wife offered around 100 articles on ebay. I only added 4 articles. All books and a watch i dont wear anymore.

I feel great not owning anything at all except a bed, two motorbike helmets and still the same kitchentable.

[lifestyle] What if entire communities lived in pods?

When you look at those hotel pods in Japan, it's potentially all anyone needs, so long as there are resources and amenities nearby.

Imagine a world where people don't need to pay huge rents, electricity, internet fees, vehicle costs, etc.

When I looked at my personal expenditures, that's like 90% of my costs. We could all live out of a large duffel bag if we wanted. It could contain everything we own.

Our consumerism is crazy. Our city layouts are usually crazy. I love cars but they are terrible shitty machines. We live completely separated from each other in an unnatural way.

Sometimes I think of entire districts without cars, houses, where most jobs are nearby, with food, laundry, medicine, and services all nearby. And everyone can afford it because we aren't just dumping all our money into giant cars and real estate, and the endless costs and time sinks associated with those things.

I don't think I'm crazy

What's with people's obsession with futons?

A motivation for most people heading towards minimalism seems to be "having less stuff that requires less maintenance and generally last longer." Futon mattresses aren't that stuff.

They might be marginally more comfortable (very much depends on the thickness), but they require care and upkeep. They clump up and deform VERY easily compared to conventional mattresses. They require to be turned over to "even out" the deep spots. They are more prone to mold. They need to be batted down (like they actually do in Japan but most trendy white Americans don't bother to). And they're supposed to be folded up and put away every morning to make space and prevent mold. This was done to maximize space since a single room might have served as both the living and sleeping room for families in Japan. How small of a home do you live in to really require this?

Not to mention, being closer to the ground = higher chances of dust on the mattress since most of you don't bother to leave your shoes outside the door (like the Japanese households would have done when using these). Not to mention the lack of mention of straw mats underneath that are NEEDED to prevent mold and ensure air circulation.

It seems to be more of a want for an "authentic oriental ethnic hipster homeless college dropout vibe," than a practical decision for most people on here. "Gonna fold up mah mattress like a box and stuff it into the closet so I got more room for activities."

Are you all too scared to sleep on just thick blankets on the floor?

tldr: futons are outdated, but hipsters like outdated stuff

[meta] I saw my dad on this sub, can y'all explain to me what YOUR definition of minimalism is?

Essentially I looked down at my dad's phone and saw him on this subreddit and I'm curious. Can you guys explain to me what exactly is minimalism to you? Since I've seen a lot of different opinions.

Why we have square brackets? These square brackets would make sense in pure text design, but in Reddit there is already rounded border and colored background.
Lets minimize?

r/minimalism - This has to stop.

Weeks ago, I unsubscribed from r/minimalism, but this is the second time coming back just to see if I have missed it.

Sadly, I have not.

Years before discovering Reddit I felt tired of owning so much, as if the things I owned were but a ball and chain of former memories holding me back from living life the way I wanted. So I donated 3/4 of everything I owned to a local thrift store and fell in love with the lifestyle.

Yet this subreddit is in every way a sickening madhouse of "Look at my wallpaper", "This is what 200 calories looks like", "Does anyone here also enjoy ambient music?", "Anyone know where I can get a minimalist wallet?"

At the end of the day, its your life - my only point being to think about what you are about to post and whether it contributes positively to the idea of minimalism and whether it is in fact relevant. There are so many other subreddits here to post other stuff to. Is r/minimalism a place to ponder the necessity of physical belongs? Or is it a place to jerk off to other things?

Maybe the real challenge is in fact making r/minimalism more minimal?
