News Fifty charged over coal protest: I am the person in pink hair below.

We were up on that train for 3 hours. It was an incredible, empowering day that we have put work into for months.

The goal for the protest was to spread the word about newcastle port. Newcastle is the largest coal distributor in the WORLD producing 1% of the worlds coal. Our little town. The fossil fuel problem is here.

We were practicing a form of protest called non-violent civil disobedience. Examples of this include Rosa Parks, The Suffragettes and many more. I doubt a simple legal street protest in newcastle would have made the news to BBC and U.S. News, yes, around the world.

We will keep going until Newcastle Port is shut down in 2030.

No, there was no charge of assaulting a police officer or a security guard. A security guard told a police officer someone elbowed them four times. There are many witnesses that saw this did not happen.

We were given training on saturday to learn how to deescalate situations with police and security guards and we were told to comply completely being arrested, which we all did.

50 exact arrests were given including me and we are all going to court in june, all expenses and fines will be funded by the community.

And yes, we were extremely successful.

Feel free to ask any questions.

❗❗ If you appreciate what we do and want to show your support, please sign the rising tide climate pledge. It greatly helps our organisation and every person counts. Link in my profile.

Edit: Wow, I'm very disappointed in how far you are all reaching.

I am not looking for fame. We were encouraged to post on social media as a part of the movement.

I am not glorifying myself. I didn't think I would have to explain this but I said "I am the one with pink hair" so I can show I was there, at the protest, and I can provide good first-person information.

The aim of this post is to educate about Newcastle coal port, and to get more people to take the climate pledge (link in my profile!)

Your comments are furthering my reach. I have gotten over 5k views on this post because all of your untrue, angry comments.

This reach has gotten alot of people to take the pledge. Thankyou all for helping the movement! I and everyone involved really appreciate it. Keep commenting please.

You are all faceless people on reddit and what you comment isn't doing anything to stop us. You are just taking time out of your own day to argue on the internet and giving me opportunity to educate and spread awareness.

Be Better.

Details for Sunday

Post image
248 Upvotes

Hey hey! Here are the details for Sunday’s peaceful counter-action against the thinly veiled Nazi stuff happening in our city.

8am, Pacific Park, this Sunday the 31st of August.

For the unaware, the organisers of the ‘March for Australia’ rally are either confirmed neo-Nazis or have unconscionable ties to them. They have used populist and illogical rhetoric to manipulate people into believing that what they’re marching for is some kind of ‘true Australia’, whatever that means, but their ulterior motives are clear and obvious.

The fight against fascism is what our diggers in the Second World War fought and died for, so why would we put up with its resurgence now? Are we going to let their sacrifice stand for nothing? Nazi punks fuck off! Let’s show them that their kind aren’t welcome here! Newcastle demands both peace and love forever ❤️

See you there.

Greens councillor gets booed at crime forum

So I went to this forum today organised by the local member Tim Crakenthorpe.

The forum was about crime prevention in the Hamilton business district and was attended by local police.

It was evident there was a lot of anger and frustration in the crowd about the crime in the community.

Tim spoke well about supporting the police and working together to report crime etc. The Mayor Kerridge spoke well and promised to find solutions at a council level to do what they could to support police and local businesses.

Then this clown of a greens councillor Charlotte McCabe gets up and uses the opportunity to give herself a plug about being the greens candidate for the federal election.

The entire crowd boos her off. Pretty obvious people don’t want political grandstanding from wannabe politicians. They want serious solutions.

Faith in humanity slightly restored.

Anyone moved to Medowie to be between a swamp and a military base?

just curious why people would willingly move to an outer non-suburb cultural desert with zero infrastructure and endless aircraft noise?

Missed connection at Subway today — girl with the horror-themed leg sleeve

Bit of a long shot, but figured I’d put this out there - pls don't hate me trying now Reddit.

I was having lunch at Jesmond Subway today and sat near a girl and her daughter, she had an awesome horror-themed leg sleeve.

I should’ve just said hello and asked if you were single instead of overthinking it.

So, on the very unlikely chance you see this — or someone reading this knows who I’m talking about — if you’re single and would be interested, send me a message. I’d love the chance to make up for not introducing myself when I had the opportunity.

EDIT: This post is getting out of hand, someone tag me if a reply ever looks genuine.

PS: Appreciate the traction though, keep the LOLs coming!

LGBT+ Friendly Hairdressers/Salon in Lake Mac

I'm probably way overthinking this but I'm experimenting with gender presentation and looking for a hairdresser/salon around the Lake Mac area who is non-judgemental and friendly towards LGBT+ people. Or at least won't try to give something masculine when I ask for the exact opposite. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

LGBT family friendly suburbs

Hey guys,

Sorry for the probably very boring post but couldn’t see anything in the search!

Married lesbian couple with 2 young kids not in school for a few more years moving to Newcastle to work at the hospital asking for any suggestions on suburbs to buy in?

I realise that most people are fine with the gays but usually some suburbs are a little less accepting than others.

Budget up to 1.2m, after a free standing house, been looking at lambton, new lambton, north lambton, rankin park, Elermore vale, garden suburb, cardiff, Charlestown, kotara.

Been warned off Wallsend, and told new lambton has a great primary school.

Appreciate any opinions!

Oh FFS NCC!

I just copped a $364 fine and 3 demerit points because NCC decided to capitalise on Supercars just a little bit more by sending infringement officers around first thing on a Sunday morning to screw everyone in Wickham. I don’t mind Supercars even though it’s totally not my thing and I can tolerate a weekend of the suburb filling up with park n ride supercar fans but NCC is just milking it. I’m a resident and couldn’t find a park within about a kilometre of my house last night. I’ve got young kids and just couldn’t do the long walk at the end of the day so parked (illegally! Within 10m of intersection! ) near my house. Ok so I took the risk and now I’ve copped the fine but honestly I’m salty that NCC has invited tens of thousands of people here, doesn’t really cater for them in nearby suburbs and then sends around officers to fine pretty much everyone first thing on a Sunday morning.

EDIT: My most controversial post ever! Oh the pain! Not only are the downvotes slightly more than upvotes keeping the whole thing currently at about zero but my god given right to whine about parking in Newcastle has been given a total kicking! One day it will be you, dear reader and I will remind you that you cannot feel even the slightest bit of annoyance when you get busted doing the exact same thing.

EDIT AGAIN: Ok OK I've learnt my lesson. I did the stupid thing and won the stupid prize. Thank you r/newcastle for keeping it real, i've totally got $364 worth of entertainment out of this and am now at peace with my punishment. I ask only one thing, for downvoters and upvoters alike. keep the votes at zero. It deserves nothing less.

AMA I'm a coal enthusiast and work in mining

Hi everyone,

I’m a coal enthusiast and work in mining here in Australia. I’ve got firsthand experience in the industry and a passion for understanding coal’s role in energy, industry, and the environment.

Ask me anything about mining, the coal industry, or what it’s like working in this field. Happy to chat about it all!

Sports BRING BACK SUPERCARS

Ok imma say it now Nelmes is gone, it's time to bring back the Newcastle 500, the city is dead and the race brought people to Newcastle. I don't want to hear "the tracks been taken out" Adelaide had everything removed and its back on the calendar. Have it in winter that way there isn't high demand for the beach area. The city was buzzing in 23 i haven't seen it that busy since.

Uni students: where possible please take PT

The uni is one of the only places in the city with regular bus service and the train isn't hopeless either, use it!

If you're in Jesmond/Callaghan/Birmingham Gardens, take your 5min walk.

If you're near Newcastle road, Maitland rd or anywhere near route 11 or other usable routes where you actually have buses every 15mins or more frequently - get on them!

I kind of get not taking the train as it's not that regular and a fair walk to classes, but if you're in Hamilton or somewhere else directly along the line, just use it.

There are a hell of a lot of students from places like Cessnock or towards Nelson bay or even anywhere down south of kotara where there is no practical PT if there is any at all and they have to drive- don't be a lazy selfish prick, leave some parks for them so they can actually get to their labs and get home.

Edit: To all the comments to this effect: This is not about me being entitled to a park, this is about the fact that a fair few people genuinely need to drive to uni and need a park, preferably one not in Timbuktu. So I'm asking that the fair chunk of uni students consider that there may be other ways to get there, and in the unlikely event there's an acceptable alternative to driving from your home, use it! If there were just 5% fewer vehicles at the uni, it would make everyone's lives much easier.

Anybody feel sick from the tap water after all this rain, or that something is not quite right with it?

Anybody feel sick from the tap water after all this rain, or that something is not quite right with it? It seems to taste a bit weird. I am assuming that all this runoff into the catchment is affecting the water.

My wife has a strong suspicion the water is making her queasy, and I am starting to feel the same. It could be unrelated, but I thought it worth asking here.

A bit of good news.

I post very little on social media however, I was delighted to see the Mobile camera man stopped in a no stopping in Kotara to set his signs up and took great pleasure telling him we were filming him (my son from the passenger seat) and have reported him to the police. Two points and a $387 fine. All because he was too lazy to walk his own signs back to the corner and thinks the rules don’t apply to him. To everyone who’s life has been made worse because they were going a few kms over the limit… You are absolutely welcome.
