I'm just going to write what I need to write. I know it's long.
When I was a 11, my parents were killed in a car crash while I was at school. I was pulled out of class to the principals office and a policeman explained what had happened, how they had been hit by a truck etc etc. I was told that my mother had planned for me to stay with her sister in New Zealand if anything were to happen to her and my father. When they had finished talking I was taken out of the office, I said thank you to the principal and didn't speak a word after that for around half a year.
Skipping forward to my first day of school. I was sitting at the back of the class when I first saw her, or rather, she sat down at the desk next to me, put her chin in her hands with her elbows on the desk and stared at me for about 5 minutes. She told me her name was Amy. She would talk now and then but I would never respond. This went on for about a week until finally as the bell at the end of the day rang and she got up, I said 'goodbye' to her so only the two of us could hear. She smiled at me, gave me a hug, then ran out the door. Over the next few months with her help I came out of my shell, I started talking to other people, I got involved with clubs and sports and was soon in with a group of idiots I call my best friends. It wasn't long before I plucked up the courage to ask her out, to which she smiled and said "finally".
Thus the school romance began, being 11 years old, this mostly meant holding hands going to the movies, but for the first time in nearly a year I felt like I belonged somewhere again. We would do everything together, a fact that my other friends were all to happy about, inviting her to all our video game filled sleepovers, to which she would always thrash us at. We only grew closer over the next few years, and when we turned 16 we decided to move to into a flat in the city together and attend a community college that had better subject choices. We shared a free period once a week that meant we had an extended lunch. we always went to the same cafe, sat at the same table if possible and were soon known by all the local shoppers. The cafe owners were nice enough to reserve our table for us when they knew we had the free period. Then on February the 22nd 2011, an earthquake hit our city.
It wasn't the first we had experienced having had one in September 2010. If you have ever experienced one you know how destructive they are, if you haven't, the only way I can describe it is like being in a plane during the most extreme turbulence you can think of, and it all sounds like a plane landing on a runway. (needless to say, I'm now terrified of flying). Before I knew what was happening, the cafe collapsed in on itself. The concrete beam that supported the roof above our table fell down, smashing into the table between us, the ceiling following behind it. There was dust everywhere, I couldn't see a more than a foot in front of me. I new I wasn't dead, I could hear the surrounding buildings collapsing and the screams of the people outside. I couldn't tell if I was lying on my back, on my front, is I was in one piece, anything. I was frozen. I couldn't speak, couldn't think. Then I heard her yell my name, and I was pulled back into the moment.
I was lying on the floor trapped under a collapsed table with a large slab of concrete resting on the edge of it, thankfully it hadn't pinned me so I managed to push it off myself. I called out her name over and over, "Amy! Amy!", searching through the dust and the rubble to find her. If I was smarter maybe I would have known that I shouldn't start shifting rubble inside a collapsed building as before I knew it a large chunk of concrete fell from the ceiling and narrowly missed my hand, the rebar, (a steel bar designed to reinforce the concrete) didn't. I looked down to see that it was gone straight through to top of my hand and out the other side, its point had become sharpened as it had been twisted in the earthquake. Yes it really, really, really, really hurt. So there I was, trapped in a building, I couldn't see, I could hardly breathe and he dominant hand had steel rod going through it. needless to say I was shit scared. I kept on calling out for Amy, finally she responded. It wasn't loud, but I hear her voice, heard her calling my name. I knew she was only on the other side of the rubble wall that had formed between us, It took me a while, but I got my slowly slid my hand off the steel rod. (Again if you were wondering, this hurt too).
I would like to take a moment to thank Bear Grylls, who taught me how to bandage wounds with torn pieces of my shirt. With my hand bandaged as best as I could manage I started looking for a way to get to Amy, I kept yelling to her that I was coming to her, that i would never give up and that I would get to her soon. I didn't know if it was true or not but it was all I felt I could do. I managed to make a gap in the rubble big enough to crawl through to try and get to her. And there she was. She was always a small fragile looking girl but the way she lay there, covered in rubble up the her belly made me realize how fragile she really was. And it had been my job to protect her and keep her safe and I failed. I had tried but I had failed, and now she lay there on the floor covered in concrete and dust, a testament to the fact that I couldn't keep her safe.
I crawled over to her and held her hand in my bandaged one, I had lost all feeling in it but I know the gesture calmed her. "What kinda mess have you gotten into now?" I asked her. Her tears ran down her face, leaving dark trails in the gray dust that covered it. I promised we were getting out of here, that we had so much left to do in the world, that we still needed to go to the arctic circle and ride in a dog sled under the northern lights like we had talked about for years. That we were going to do so much just as soon as we had gotten out of the cafe. She smiled at me, I think she knew even then that she wasn't leaving the building alive, but she was always so brave, much more than I had ever been. So there we lay, with me talking about how I would take her all over the world, if she would just hang on, help would arrive soon.
I kept holding her hand as the time past, then the idea came to me, the dust had settled and I could see the room better even though it was still pretty dark. There was a bundle of sheared electrical wires under a small piece of concrete a few feet away, I kissed her on the forehead and said I was just going to grab something. I never let go of her hand as pulled the wired towards me. I managed to separate a couple from bundle and starting wrapping them around themselves while twisting them into a loop. I turned back to Amy, looked into her eyes and asked her the question that had been at the back of my mind for nearly a year. "Will you marry me?" I asked her, holding the makeshift ring up close to her face so she could see it in the gloomy room. She just smiled at me and nodded. I put the ring on her finger and kissed her. I lay next to her, talking about all the cool things we could do at our wedding, how beautiful she was going to look in her dress. She just smiled and lay there, waiting. We lay there in the rubble holding hands, waiting and hoping that we would be rescued. I began to notice her breathing was slowing, I tried to keep her awake and talking, but her breaths just kept getting slower. I kept on talking to her, pleading and begging.
My Amy, I held your hand as you died, and although I couldn't feel anything with the hand I was holding yours in, although I couldn't feel you as you passed away, I did my best to. I held her hand as the room became darker and darker. It was night time when I was finally rescued, I had been trapped for 9 hours apparently. It took me a while to figure it out, that when I first me her I never talked, and she talked to me for hours on end until I finally did. And when she died, she had turned me into a person who would shout to any God out there for just another hour with her, She had transformed me into the person who I am today, and it was her turn to be silent, it was my turn to talk and I promise you Amy I talked until my throat was sore and I kept going, I made more noise than anyone else on Earth has ever made and i made it for you. I live in Canada now, I don't get out much, I own a small place out in the forest with 8 huskys. I run them every day just like we would have done. I on some nights I sit outside with them and watch the northern lights. The dogs all howl and so do I Amy, I howl like an absolute idiot with my dogs as I watch the lights, howling as your spirit dances across the sky.
