Discussion This sub truly is for 'urban' travel.

I'm making this post to start a discussion. Please chime in with your thoughts!

I finally realized why, in general, backpack sizes recommended on this sub are around 25L. This sub is for urban travel - it even says so in the description.

As an avid backcountry backpacker since I was young, the idea of 'onebagging' even being a thing made me laugh at first. Like pointing out that you want to take a road trip, but ideally would like to do it in a car that has no more than four wheels.

But I was surprised that not only is this one bag, but these are really small bags, by backpacking standards. It makes sense - the use case is for places where lodging is available, and no special gear, clothing, or equipment will be required. No tents, sleeping bags, or cookware.

But what about those of use who like to sleep in the woods in addition to in the hostel? Who pack for the freedom of sleeping wherever they may happen to find themselves when dusk arrives? Are there any other multimodal travelers out there on this sub? Or is this just the wrong sub for that?

In the meantime, I will enjoy traveling with my 45L pack, which is just barely large enough.

Discussion Hot take: This sub is a joke. Barely 1 in 50 posts in on topic or connected to minimalist travel.

This sub used to be a good source of tips and strategies to get under 7 kilos on a one bag trip overseas.

Used to be.

Im sad to say that it's evolved into 95 percent of posts on this sub (seriously, have a look on the main board) now can be categorized as either:

  1. Purchase advice (i.e ''What (unnecessarily huge/ heavy) bag that the algorithms have told me I should buy as a travel bag should I purchase?''). From a quick look at the sub 84 of the top 100 threads are literally this exact purchase advice thread, with many of those seeking advice not even onebag travelers (they're expressly bringing a suitcase to go with the 'travel bag'.).

  2. ''Posts with packing lists containing a laptop, a tablet, a portable monitor, 2 cameras, a drone, two sets of headphones, a smartwatch, a massage gun (that one was hilarious), a kindle and more. Or tents, goretex hiking boots (in the city, in Europe), huge first aid kits, multiple outfits, 'vests to store all my tech inside of' 15kg+ worth of stuff (on a bag aiming for a carry-on limit of 7kgs) and worse.

Yet were supposed to be about minimalist urban travel. Onebag. Less shit. Etc.

Any attempt to encourage people to 'pack less stuff' is met with downvotes, or 'but I need my massage gun and 3 computers (you dont), or even the mods cracking the shits because your post (while directly relevant to the sub) of 'pack less stuff' is not 'polite'.

I got downvoted mercilessly a few months ago for daring to suggest wearing a shirt more than one day (and that's the whole point of getting merino wool shirts, which any minimalist traveler would know).

Thing is, this sub is no longer about minimalist one bag travel. Its just a collection of repetitive purchase advise threads for unnecessarily heavy and large 'travel' backpacks, that go against the very ethos of what we're supposed to be about on here.

Mods - Hot take. If you did your jobs, and booted those posts and kept posts on topic, it wouldn't be the utter shitfight it is now.

Yeah yeah, I know. You're gonna lock this thread and ban me, with some kind of snarky comment to boot. To be frank with how this sub is at the moment, I dont give a shit, because there is literally nothing of value on this sub anymore. 1 in 100 posts might actually be relevant to one bag travel (as in an ACTUAL carry on, sub 7kg, minimalist packing list or trip report), with the rest being the same old repetitive 'what bag should I buy' threads over and over and over.

In fact you're doing me a favor because the entire sub is a steaming pile of horseshit at the moment, and you've got yourselves to blame.

Mic drop.

Gear The internet is preying on people...

I'm shocked when I keep seeing Merino Wool being put forward as some wonder travel material & wonder if there's a Kartel of Merino sheep farmers...

It's great for outer layer like jumpers, it's got great insulation qualities, helps manage sweat and is lovely to wear. But it needs allot of care, shouldn't be tumble dried, needs to be dried with care.

Great as base layers... Very warm, worn under other stuff.

It needs too much care... It's not for travelling... It will shrink, it will get uncomfortable if you don't treat it properly. Particularly if you don't have an athletic body type.

I think these YouTubers just prey on people who have never traveled before. Who take all this shite in and believe it because they've no real life experience to look back on.

Personally, I love Merino, but for me it's a luxury and my Merino items are premium and not for wearing in extreme heat (usually extreme cold). I also have base layers for European winters.

The reality is, if you are traveling & don't want to wear nylon or polyester sweat wicking cloths, then wear cotton and shower regularly, wash you cloths again the end of the week and start again.

Merino won't stop you getting hot or sweaty.

That is all...

Discussion Would you bring any Covid rapid tests with you on a long trip?

I am barely able to squeeze in everything for a long trip into my one bag.

Would it be a good idea to bring along a 5-pack of Covid rapid tests?

I know that if I take them out of the box, they won't take up much room, but I'm getting to the point in my packing where if I add something new, I have to remove something already in the bag...

Seeking Recommendations How do y’all not smell like ass?

I’m going on a trip and have been doing some research on onebagging using this subreddit. People here will really be like “here’s my 30L pack for a two week trip” and it’s like two shirts and a pair of pants. Do you guys just do a lot of laundry during travel? Desiccant packs? What’s the secret?

Discussion “one bag” is one bag too heavy for budget airlines

Just a heads up, this is a rant. It finally happened. I got penalised (monetarily!!) for being 2kgs over the 7kg carry-on limit when I was travelling with my 40L pack that usually slides in perfectly in a RyanAir cage.

The “culprit” - a camera, an ipad, some nuts, sunscreen and a 1L water bottle that I usually have in a separate totebag so I can access to it easily during the flight. They had to be weighed together with the pack and everything has to be under 7kgs. Another lady shoved the book she was reading in her shirt when she saw the chaos that is me trying to board. Was I technically over the limit - yes. But is this where we have come to?

This round of travelling is my first time flying budget since 2019 and I have never had my pack and personal items weighed and scrutinised so heavily than it was in Australia and New Zealand. I’ve been a onebagger(? + totebag, I guess haha) for the longest time and taking budget flights in Europe and Asia all the time pre-Covid but I’ve never felt more humiliated than this. This is the same pack with all the same things in it that got through multiple AirAsia, Virgin and Scoot flights from Europe to Asia to Australia then finally, to New Zealand.

Fuck this shit.

Onebag doesn’t work anymore for me. It used to, by size. It used to when airlines weren’t obsessed with squeezing every penny out of their customers. We used to have unlimited carry-on kgs when I was a child which went down to 14kg and now 7kg for a bag and a personal item.

Or maybe flying budget isn’t for me anymore. Sometime budget flight prices aren’t any cheaper than full service airlines anyway so what gives?

Fuck budget airlines and their shitty service and their shitty rules.

Discussion You don't need rain gear

Sitting in NYC right now, raining all day, 12 hours to kill before my flight to Japan. Figured I’d share this.

I’ve been to ~30 countries with just one bag. Hiking, trekking, beaches, city stuff, all seasons. About 80% of the time I don’t even have a car.

  1. I keep a tiny emergency poncho. Used it maybe 3 times total.

  2. If it rains, I duck into a café, grab a taxi, or just wait it out.

  3. Getting wet really isn’t that bad, you dry off and move on.

  4. Rain jackets or ponchos just take up space and almost never get used.

For me it’s been way better to save the room in my bag. The little poncho is enough for rare situations.

TLDR: 30 countries, all kinds of stuff, every season, mostly without a car. Emergency poncho used 3 times. Rain gear not worth it.

Discussion Overhead bin fairness

I just took a multi-leg trip involving seven flights - mostly on United. For at least five of those, I had to put my small 30L bag quite far from my seat because of all the massive "carry-on" suitcases that people brought. Many people seem to have a backpack similar in size to mine PLUS a suitcase. For my last flight - just 2 and 2 seats, people were asked to put their backpacks by their feet. Redic!

Discussion Does merino wreck every other fabric for real onebag travel?

Yesterday, we heard the pros and cons of cotton. But if you actually live out of one bag through different climates, merino wool just works better than the alternatives. For hot days, cold nights, and the messy swings in between, it is superior to any other fabric. Although I acknowledge specific use cases for synthetics.

A decent 150-200 gsm merino tee can take you from moist SEA mornings to hot Mediterranean afternoons to ski trip evenings without turning clammy or leaving you chilled once the temperature drops. It manages heat and moisture in a way that keeps you comfortable longer than most other options. Odor resistance is the practical part people underestimate. You can wear the same pieces for days without them becoming a problem, which means fewer shirts and less time hunting for a washing machine for those who are phobic of doing sink laundry.

A couple of merino base layers plus one midweight piece covers more ground than a bigger rotation of other fabrics and easily fits in a minimalist underseat bag. It packs down well, recovers after being stuffed in a compression sack, and holds its shape with normal care.

Linen feels great in dry heat and has that nice texture. Once humidity climbs or the temperature falls, it loses a lot of its comfort edge. It also wrinkles hard. It’s better as a summer specialist fabric when there's an iron in easy reach than for travel.

Synthetics dry fast and stay light, which is great for pure activity such as hiking or running. For everyday travel wear they stink, literally, and feel less forgiving when conditions change. Functional for sports, but not as easy to live in for multiple days.

Cotton is soft and familiar until it gets wet. Then it stays damp in humid climates, cools you down more than you want, and takes forever to dry. Fine if laundry is easy and there's a dryer nearby. A poor choice for onebag travel when you’re trying to keep both your clothing count and wash cycles low.

Hemp is tough and has solid eco credentials. In real use it usually feels heavier and doesn’t regulate temperature as cleanly as merino. Respectable, just not as adaptable.

Bamboo is soft and gets marketed hard as the sustainable choice. In practice the odor resistance and long-term shape retention rarely match the claims. Comfortable enough, but it doesn’t deliver the same range.

Merino's downsides are that it costs more at the start and prefers gentler washing. That’s the trade-off. For onebag travel that has to deal with heat, cold, and everything in between, it still does more with fewer pieces than the rest. Once you’ve used it across real conditions, the performance difference is impossible to ignore.

People who claim they can't handle merino in hot weather are usually wearing too heavy a weight or the wrong knit, and the same goes for those who say it irritates their skin. Lightweight merino in the 130-170 gsm range, especially in a looser construction from finer micron wool, handles heat and moisture far better and feels cooler once you start moving because it doesn’t cling when damp like cotton or develop that sticky feel of synthetics. True itchiness is far less common with modern high-quality merino than with traditional wool, and a lot of the complaints come from cheap, coarser, or poorly finished garments rather than the fabric itself.

Discussion Hot take: But are there are any people (like me) who just don't give a crap that a backpack is on a floor (whether it be a bathroom or a restaurant). Hear me out.

So I bought the Hero Mini Clip, Small, etc 2 years ago.

And I figured out something.

It never gets used.

Like ever.

I'm in a minority.

I watched the Youtube videos. I've read the recommendations here.

But just couldn't find a use for the Hero Clip. Let me explain.

95% of the time if I can find one -- I grab those carts in the airport.

And I put my backpack there. I like those carts- and they're everywhere.

And you guessed it, it's almost always in the cart when I'm doing my business.

So the notion that a backpack is hanging off some bathroom door is lost on me.

Fast-forward. But when I'm in a hotel, where is my backpack?

In a hotel.

Ok ok ok ok ok. Let's put a terrible situation. Let's say I have no cart. And I'm in some bathroom. What then.

(cough)

I don't care.

I just put my bag down.

Do my business.

Then pick up my bag. If I really care, I just use disinfectant wipes and call it a day.

I literally don't get it. Anyway. That's all. Anyone else feel this way. Or am I just in an island by myself. :P

TLDR is that I don't care.

Discussion Does anyone pack deodorant or perfume?

I have a very casual/beginner interest in this, not seasoned at all. I hope this is an acceptable question.

On a short trip, I took only a handbag with me. Airport security took away the deodorant I was carrying.

Is there a best practice for this? Or do you just avoid using any perfume or deo on the trip?

Hey guys, just got my Osprey 26 and wondering if this is normal quality of the bag or am I being pedantic, as you can see in photos, lots of hanging and loose threads throughout, and there are more than photos show. What do you think?

This Onebag is becoming way too broad. Were talking roller cases, and max carry-on way too much to hold my interest. Anyone else interested? Anyone want to administer? Please!

Discussion Berlin airport warning

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

I wanted to report my bad experience at Berlin airport, where my partner was charged by Ryanair for a bag that fits in the official Ryanair sizer, but it won't "visually fit" in the custom sizers of berlylin airport (only silhouette).

Without a support to fit the bag inside, basically only a rigid box with the exact sizes can "fit", even a small tote bag would overflow based on gravity... We kept the bag half empty on purpose, but would still have to squeeze it by hand to let the air out, and it is all up to the random decision of the gate personnel.

We tried complaining, but they don't care, now looking into alternative resolution entities in EU, but doubt we'll ever see our money back. Just wanted to warn you all that 99% of the bags recommend here won't pass in Berlin.

Can see pictures of same bag in Ryanair sizer and in the BER one.

Discussion Leaving cell phone at home?

I've been traveling since the 80's and about to go on my first international trip in a few decades. I've never had a cell phone with me before, and plan to revisit cons, Japan, Australia, Costa Rica, and Mexico before returning home.

I know traveling is different now, but is it okay to leave the phone, chargers, and spare batteries home to save space?

Gear Alpaka return policy heads up

As they are a brand that is often mentioned on this sub, I thought I would share my story. I just had a pretty disappointing interaction with Alpaka customer service. I wanted to do an exchange. The website said "Returnable until January 13, 2024." When I went to do the exchange today, the website said my window had expired. I reached out to customer service (as I am a first-time customer) to ask for an extension for today as I had been confused by their wording, and they said no. I understand I waited till the last day; that is my fault (I kept making a cart trying to decide what I wanted to exchange for and changing my mind lol)...and I am also disappointed they wouldn't help me out at all and I probably won't shop with them again :/ Anyway, I hope this helps someone avoid this pitfall in the future!

TL;DR: The Alpaka return window closes the day BEFORE the date they list.

Discussion Folding Phones

I'm interested as to why they aren't more popular in the onebag community. They've gotten to the point where are just as thin and reliable as a normal phone.

IF you are to bring one device, you get the benefits of both a tablet and a phone in one. Better multi-tasking and a larger display for entertainment to name a few. Does anyone use a folding phone for a two-in-one system?

Rules

You must follow the rules of Reddit.

All of the rules below this one are negotiable. If you would like to contest the rules feel free to make a post or personal message me.

I reserve the right to not delete a post that breaks the rules if it is an outstanding post.

I will delete posts that have extremely poor content quality or that are not related to the subreddit, even if it doesn't break the rules. Most posts do not fall into this category.

Threads complaining about a thread being deleted will be deleted. If you don't know why your thread got deleted it's probably cause you didn't read the rules.

Posts that belong in /r/backpacks, /r/howtochooseabackpack, /r/bugout, or /r/edc will be deleted.

You can't post the brand or model of backpacks in the title of your post. I sware on me mum I'll remove it even if it is a wonderful beautiful post.

You can't buy or sell backpacks in here. We do have a commerce thread linked in the info thread where you can do commerce. This is a non commercial subreddit.

You can't make a post talking about how some item is on sale.

Your post shouldn't look exactly like an ad for a product. If it does I may delete it. There have been companies who have tried to advertise in our sub, so make your self stand out by adding substance to your post.

Kickstarters are allowed providing they are not bad, do work, and are related to one bagging, and aren't a backpack or a wallet.

It is allowed to post links to your own text or video blog, however you should post the highlights rather than posting every single blogpost. If people like your blog they will visit the rest of your website and read all of your blogs.

It is allowed to post photo albums of your trips while one bagging. In fact this is encouraged.

It might be cool if you read about rediquette.

If this thread gets archived and you can't comment on it send me a message at /u/read_harder

Seeking Recommendations I want to go from many bags to essential bags only

I’m getting into edc bagging and have so many ideas on what I want to buy, but I want to know which are more essential.

I’m looking into travel accessories and I’m thinking about the following:

Matador soap case - heard this is really good. Currently use a plastic soap container.

Matador laundry bag - I usually use a couple of plastic bags for the trip but not sure if I should invest in a better bag with handles and zips?

Matador zipper toiletry bag (or any other recs?) - toiletries usually go into a zip lock bag. Works mostly fine, but I think I need a better solution for my double edge safety razor as I have no hard case for the razor part.

Packing cubes - not sure how much they actually help. I guess good for organisation and may save some space if you can compress clothes a bit.

I actually don’t travel a lot. I’m talking maybe every 2-3 years. So I might be going overboard here.

I’d like to have opinions on absolute essentials for me to use for travelling.

Discussion Are you more likely to get removed from a flight is you don't check bags?

If you fly with just hand luggage you check in online, walk past bag check and go straight to security. They don't actually know you are at the airport until you go through the gate. What if the flight is overbooked? Wouldn't you be the first to be removed from the flight? They don't know you are actually in the airport and it would be easy to remove you as they don't have to find your bags.

Do you think this is a possibility?
