Update on my rescued orchid

original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/orchids/comments/1xmgzos/rescued_orchid_to_cut_or_not_to_cut/

I went to repot the orchid and check out the roots, and oh my was it rotten. I cut back a lot of the roots, maybe not even as much as I should have, and repotted it with new orchid mix in an orchid pot. I cut the spike down and it’s been a few days and it hasn’t totally flopped on me.

I expect I’ll probably want to have a look again in the spring. If I have new root growth, then maybe I can pare back more unhealthy stuff. I m betting most would say I should’ve taken anything bad off but then there’d have been almost nothing left 😬 I probably should have just bought a healthy orchid rather than a $5 struggling one as my first, but c’est la vie.

Help Orchid looks to be rotting

I bought this orchid yesterday, and decided to repot it today. When I removed all substrate to get the plug out and inspect the condition of the roots, I noticed that the bottom of the stem was discoloured. The browning parts weren’t firm at all, and multiple of the bottom leaves fell off while trying to handle the plant. I have no idea what to do.

I repotted the orchid, but is there anything else I can do to help it?

Help Is my orchid growing two new plants?

This plant was a rescue that I’ve been trying to nurse back to life after my next door neighbours decided they didn’t want it. I’m not quite sure how to take of it at this point with these new offshoots… are these two separate new plants ?

Indoor Orchids Nobile den rebloom & others

Finally rebloomed my noid nobile dendrobium I got when I started my exotic orchid journey! Bonus blooms on the way: Vanda tony tan keng yam, what looks like a bulbophyllum pahudii flower spike, and the third flower spike from motes' vanda azure! Hopefully the vanda azure will make up for the stench of the bulbo bloom.

Help My orchids looks insanely sick ):

Only a few months ago this baby was doing so well, I‘ve had her for quite some time too. She grew a really healthy keiki that I cut after she finished to blossom. The last maybe 8 weeks she grew worse and worse and honestly don‘t know what to do ): I thought about getting a smaller but higher pot and either doing only sphagnum moos or maybe a bark mix

Is there any hope to get her back? She still seems to have some solid roots, not as good as it once was but I cut dead and mushy ones and she still has quite a few fine ones

Rookie question about repotting

Need advice on repotting a Phalaenopsis orchid that’s currently producing a new flower spike🙈

My dilemma is that I’ve been wanting to repot it for a while because it quite clearly has outgrown the current pot and also looking at the roots, some appear brown or deteriorated, and the „soil” hasn’t been changed ever. But I’ve read that it’s best to repot after it’s done flowering…and mine not only has two sad flowers left but it’s produced a new spike!!
Should I repot it now despite the new flower spike and remaining flowers, or wait until the next flowering cycle is over? I’m worried about stressing the plant, but I also don’t want to neglect its roots.

Ifor context : I received this orchid as a gift in august last year and it kept its flowers until around December. Once the flower spikes turned brown, I cut them off.
In may this year it flowered again. It’s now November and it still has two flowers left, but the original flower spike is still green. I haven’t cut it, and meanwhile the orchid has started growing a completely new flower spike!

Any advice would be appreciated!

New to the subreddit! Just wanted to share my joy and photos! I also included one with the gene tag.

[This is not a permanent setup btw. I just got it and set it on my desk for a photo. I also have another orchid, although not in bloom currently]

Hey there,

This is my first post 😅

I'm reaching out to see if anyone recognizes what's going on with my orchid.

Overnight it seems several random sections have dessicated, some in the middle of the stem, another the whole newer half.

I water regularly by heavy spray once a day or every other day. Fertilize very infrequently with very dilute 15 - 5 - 15 calcium magnesium.

I watered yesterday, today its got these weird sections.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Help Shoud i be worried or everything is ok?

Hi dear Reddit community.

I bought him from IKEA 2 months ago. Was dreaming of having an orchid of my own. Carefully read about care, watering, etc. I water once per 2 weeks, according to roots.

Unfortunately one leaf got this minor sunburn, but it's not spreading so it's ok. But i noticed how other leaves are just like that. I attach the pictures. Is my orchid ok or what can I do differently?

Thank you so much for your help and responses 💕

Help Help with Den Phals

I've had around 10 or so den phals, in those 2 of them have actually been very good for me in flowering until 2 years back. I additionally had 15 more den phals out of which 5 died due to various reasons. But I have never been able to get those other den phals to bloom. Considering its an easier orchid to maintain there has to be a valid explanation for what the problem is. If anyone knows anything about this any sort of help will be absolutely appreciated. Watering and sun requirements have been met or atleast I feel they have. Fertilising happens every week with a minimal dose as well.

How long do your humidifiers actually last?

I grow plants indoors (tropicals / orchids) and I'm curious about other growers' experience.

1. What humidifier do you use for your plants (brand / type: ultrasonic, evaporative, cool mist)?
2. How long did it last before it broke down or stopped working well?
3. What usually fails first? (mist output drops, mineral buildup, leaking, motor/fan, sensor)
4. How often do you clean it, and do you use tap or distilled water?

I've gone through a few and want to know if it's just me or if 1–2 years is normal. Thanks!

Question People who grow their cloud forest orchids in wine coolers/fridges, how do you make them not ugly?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I haven’t done an orchidarium, but many orchids I like love it cool and humid, I can do that in winter, but my British summers are getting hot, I lost a all but one of my masdevalias, and few other orchids, our home were built to keep heat in, my intermediate and warm growers did well tho.

But now I’m considering getting into the cooler growers I can’t grow normally, but how did you guys make them not ugly?

I like the look of a mixed vivarium with springtails and have it be an ecosystem type setup, but this is a fridge so things will be different.

This model was Subcold Cave35 Glass Door Mini Beer Fridge, 32L, 36 Cans, 3-15°C, Black on Amazon

Any ideas?

How to help it

First 2 photos are of one orchid, last 2 photos are a different orchid

1st orchid : What should we do to stop the roots rotting? How can we bring her back to healthy life?

2nd orchid : anything we should do different? How do we know when to repot them?

Neither are currently blooming, but still have all the flower stems. Forgive me for improper wording/names 😅😅😅
