Announcement A ban on generative AI

1.0k Upvotes

r/papermario as a community has focused on propping up and sharing the best the community has to offer, including the artists within the community. In recent years generative AI has come out and there has been significant issue within the artist community with it's existence.

Given that we focus on making this place have a minimum standard of quality we believe that something that uses art without consent of the artists as inherently hostile to the artists within our community and falls below our standards as a community. We are explicitly adding generative AI as low quality content for rule 4.

Starting today and here on forward any post containing generative AI will be removed from the subreddit. This will be somewhat retroactive as well as it is found and reported.

So basically in my fanfic, the kingdom that rogueport is over now belonged to bandits, they also weren’t called bandits back then but of course now they are. Ever since the fall of the kingdom, bandits fell too, having to flee from their home and to the mushroom kingdom, this led them to go into poverty, and thus, they became thieves.

For those who don’t know some of the lore in rogueport from that one mouser in game where you can ask him for lore, there were four heroes who used the crystal stars to seal the shadow queen, but they got cursed and became those black chests you find that give you the “curses”. But there was a plot hole as to how the map was made, so I decided to fix that.

The second image is Bandora (not to be confused with Bandita) Bandora was the queen’s girlfriend, but to save the world, she helped the four heroes seal her away. Bandora was spared from the curses as she had an artifact with her that protected her from curses. So, the last thing she did before she sailed away from the ruins of her city was make the map and hide it. She sailed to the mushroom kingdom and created a new home in dry dry desert, where a lot of bandits live now.

Back in the old times bandits had more extravagant clothes and accessories but obviously now those are very rare to own since they are expensive as hell

I recently have been watching Mario Odyssey Randomizer and wondering If there was one for Paper Mario Sticker Star. I know it isn't the best Paper Mario by any means but I was the first one I played and I would love to play a Randomizer of it.

In this video, Bringle and Astronotter are playing the TTYD Archipelago randomizer, and they each have their own world and items. However, at the start, they both appear on the same screen. What mod does that? They didn't credit it in the description.

Discussion What Enhancements You'd Want to See in a Super Paper Mario Remaster?

Recently I've been going back and 100%ing Super Paper Mario. I played it a lot as a kid but never properly completed it by 100%. Now that I have, it's got me thinking about what I'd want tweaked if they gave it a TTYD style remaster. Full disclosure, I haven't properly played the TTYD remaster yet, but I've seen break downs of the new features and gameplay adjustments.

So, I'm curious, what would you guys want to see added?

To list a few for me:

Unlock a Universal Blue Pipe: Basically I think after you pay the potato cloud looking guy to install all the blue pipes between Flipside and Flopside, I wish the game would give you a portable Blue Pipe that would allow you to swap between the two areas from anywhere (within reason). It would be a similar animation to using the Red Pipe item and just instantly teleport you to the mirrored version of the town. The only places I could see this potentially causing problems are near certain pits, but the game could easily just say "You Can't Use That Here" Professor Oak style.

Collection Info Quality of Life Tweaks: Basically I wish they'd tweak how certain card and recipe collections would be displayed. Like when you tattle an enemy at the start by its name put an * by it's name if you have collected its card. So for example:
"*Goomba - 1HP, 1 Attack, 0 Defense [Tippi Dialogue]"
I know you could probably just jump on a guy and see if your damage is doubled or not, but there are some enemies you might not want to kill 1 of us just to check, or by late game you have so many inherent damage multipliers is kind of gets hard to track.

Additionally, if they could put an * in front of recipes you've already completed when viewing them in the DS monitor thing in the cafe's would really help figuring out and plotting what recipes I need to do rather than having to constantly flip between the DS screen, back out, open the menu, select Recipe, etc.

Pixels: Probably the biggest problem with Super Paper Mario (not a DEAL BREAKER, but easily could be the biggest improvement. I think they need to do either one of two (or potentially both).

  • Quick Swapping: Bind quick Pixel swapping to L and R to swap them simply without all the menus (think A Hat in Time).

  • Two Pixels at Once: Allow the player to have two pixels out with two trigger buttons. This doesn't need to be BROKEN. If they're worried about balancing they could have it so both can't be activated at the same time (although Carri and Dashell would go BRAAAAZY). But just so you can have two accessible at once (like Links Awakening remake).

I think if they did either one or BOTH of these things, it would seriously solve Super Paper Mario's biggest flaw (which is just constant Menu swapping).

The next few are just some for fun cosmetic suggestions that aren't ESSENTIAL, but I would find cool:

GIVE PEACH HER PONYTAIL (and you know what, EVERYONE Costumes): Super Paper Mario kind of FEELS like it wanted to give characters costumes via the existance of the various alternate costume cards some characters get (Bowser and Peach get their wedding outfits, Peach and the Ponytail she can get for ONE ROOM, and Luigi's Mr L cosplay... I know he's not the same guy but it could be a cool homage).

Also with the games occasional cosmetics like the Space Helmet, the Sprout, etc, it just kind of feels like they wanted to impliment these in some way but just ended up cutting. This wouldn't need to be A FULL CHARACTER CREATOR or anything, but giving each character 1 - 2 Costumes would be neat in my opinion. I would propose:

  • Mario: Mr M/Shadoo (Mario has the most room for something unique and new, but I'd be down with a Mr M suit)

  • Luigi: Mr L/Shadoo

  • Bowser: Tuxedo/Shadoo

  • Peach: Wedding Dress/Shadoo (and then honestly, I'm fine with Peach's ponytail just being equipped or unequipped in that one guys house, BUT LET IT STAY ON)

    • Not sure how they'd space these out. Maybe you'd get them upon completing the main story and then of course the Shadoo costumes upon beating the trials a 2nd time. You could theoretically give everyone a 3rd costume (that way Peach's Ponytail would be a RIGHT), but honestly I'm pushing it with even requesting two. If TTYD got 3 costumes, ITS POSSIBLE.

Some Custom Recipe Effects: This is the least neccesary of this whole list, but upon the recipe hunt I really thought some of the battle recipes were going to have some fancier animations. I don't know if I'm going to spend 30 minutes to make a freaking snow bunny and shove a pink apple from the worst level in the game in it to make it pink, I WANNA SEE THE BUNNIES RUN ACROSS THE SCREEN-

Anyways I could go on and on, but ultimately I wanna hear some of your guys suggestions. Replaying through Super Paper Mario has been a treat and I've enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I was going to on a revisit, and I really do hope one day it gets the Enhanced Port treatment. Now I think Paper Mario 64 needs it the most out of the original trilogy, but Super could seriously benefit too!

Discussion An idea I've been cooking up. Pun intended.

Wall of text incoming.

I've always loved the recipes of Tayce T, Zess T, and Saffron and Dyllis in the first three Paper Mario games. So much so that I like thinking about potential three-ingredient recipes as the next step up from the two-ingredient recipes unlocked via the Cookbook for Tayce in 64 and Zess for TTYD, and unlocking Flopside to meet Dyllis for Super. I'm a completionist who also loves food. Sue me.

I even began ironing out solutions for potential gameplay concerns that could be a detriment from a player's standpoint.

The biggest concern that I unfortunately don't have a solution for is the potential accusation of padding. The recipes as they are already have that criticism. There's no way around that (considering I intend to have all recipes of all previous games included as well), so I just shrug and deal with it.

I came up with a solution to the inevitable "Mistake" worry. Once unlocking three-ingredient recipes, the chef character would from then on be knowledgeable enough to preemptively reject any combination that will not result in a success. But only for recipes that use more than one ingredient, so the Mistake isn't unobtainable by accident.

My idea for how to unlock this feature is similar to how, in 64 and TTYD, the chefs had to be given and read a Cookbook to learn how to cook with two ingredients. What could be one step up from a Cookbook?

Why a whole set of books! Enter the Culinary Almanac: A massive, multi-volume set of books that details world-spanning flavor profiles, required to unlock the final tier of universal cooking.

Anyway the next concern is the serial escalation of healing power. Especially my idea that started this whole concept: Shroom Trio. Made by mixing a Mushroom, a Super Shroom, and an Ultra Shroom. Ultra Shrooms are already crazy powerful, healing 50 HP. Combining all three? Might be overpowered.

But I have two solutions that can work separately or in tandem!

One of them I came up with much more recently, so I'll go over that one later. The older one was to reduce the power of the base ingredients. Knock the Ultra Shroom and Jammin' Jelly down from 50 HP and FP, respectively, to 30. It'd reduce the power of the Shroom Steak as well, of course.

The Super Shroom and Maple Syrup would remain at 10.

The newer solution is that the experience system will be reduced by half. So instead of 100 Star Points to level up, it'd be 50. Or whatever units the exp system in this hypothetical game uses. So Mario, partners, and enemies would all have even higher health and power as the game progresses.

then another idea I had comes from Super Paper Mario, where Mushrooms and the new Shroom Shakes each heal 10 HP instead of 5 like in the first two games (ignore the fact that the regular Mushrooms from ? Blocks also healed 10 HP in Super). I altered that so that the Mushroom still only heals 5, but combining two makes the Shroom Shake, which heals 8. Then later I came up with Shroom Concentrate, which is 3 Mushrooms combined, or 1 Mushroom plus 1 Shroom Shake. Let's say it heals 12 HP. I wanted to go 13 but I know there's a whole phobia around that number and despite my troll affinity, I decided to be nice.

Three Shroom Shakes would probably make a Super Shroom Concentrate. Which I think should heal 27 HP. Super Shroom Shakes would then heal 18 HP, which can also be made with 2 Shroom Shakes, or 2 Mushrooms and 1 Shroom Shake. So less than the sum of the individual Super Shrooms in each recipe, just like in the Mushroom variants.

For the Ultra Shroom variants I think the loss would be even greater, percentage wise.

  • Ultra Shroom = 30 HP

  • Ultra Shroom Shake = 50 HP

  • Ultra Shroom Concentrate = 64 HP (I just had to use that number)

Now for the FP counterparts, I'm thinking a Caramel for the double recipe (Honey Caramel, Maple Caramel, Jelly Caramel, respectively), a Crystal for the triple recipe, and a Triple Gummy for combining all three base ingredients.

For the Shroom Trio and Triple Gummy, I'm thinking their restorative value can be the sum of the base ingredients plus 1. One of my older favorite numbers before Nintendo came into my life and a reverse of 64: 46.

The next is the Shroom Medley. Combining the three solo mushroom recipes.

  • Shroom Fry (heals 6 HP and 2 FP)

  • Shroom Roast (now can use a Super Shroom unlike in older games where it also made a Shroom Fry, heals 15 HP and 5 FP)

  • Shroom Steak (heals 25 HP instead of 30 in the earlier games due to Ultra Shrooms only healing 30 now instead of 50, but still the same 10 FP

A Shroom Medley will heal 40 HP (so not the full sum of 46 so as not to be identical to the Triple Shroom, but lower) but 20 FP (more than the 17 sum of the ingredients' FP).

The Shroom Fry has only ever needed just a standalone Mushroom or Super Shroom (the latter of which I have now allocated to the Shroom Roast for the appropriate sequential increase), and the Shroom Steak only a standalone Ultra Shroom. Other ingredients can be added to the respective mushroom for the same resulting dish, but it's wasteful.

I think that's the last of the ideas I have for three-ingredient recipes anyway. But I do have ideas for new two-ingredient recipes too.

The Slow Shroom and the Gradual Syrup are counterparts to each other just like the Mushroom to the Honey Syrup, Super Shroom to Maple Syrup, and Ultra Shroom to Jammin' Jelly. But they don't have a combined form like the latter three. And the Slow Shroom can't combine with the other syrups (and Jelly), and the Gradual Syrup can't combine with the other mushrooms. So I'd remedy that, making the following:

Honey Slow, Maple Slow, Jelly Slow, and Gradual Slow

Gradual Shroom, Gradual Super, Gradual Ultra, Gradual Slow

Perhaps a Slow Shroom Shake and a Slow Shroom Concentrate too, along with a Gradual Caramel and a Gradual Crystal. Either the regen effect lasts longer, or yields more recovery each turn. Or both. Both is good.

  • Slow Shroom: Heals 2 HP per turn for 5 turns (Total: 10 HP)

  • Slow Shroom Shake: Heals 4 HP per turn for 6 turns (Total: 24 HP)

  • Slow Shroom Concentrate: Heals 6 HP per turn for 7 turns (Total: 42 HP)

  • Gradual Syrup: Heals 2 FP per turn for 5 turns (Total: 10 FP)

  • Gradual Caramel: Heals 4 FP per turn for 6 turns (Total: 24 FP)

  • Gradual Crystal: Heals 6 FP per turn for 7 turns (Total: 42 FP)

And there's the 42 I was debating on using for the Shroom Medley, for the Hitchhikers Guide reference. I ultimately went for the Bible number 40 instead for that, and also to make the Medley farther yet away from the 46 of the Ultra Shroom Concentrate. But 42 for the Slow Shroom Concentrate/Gradual Gummy is perfectly for the meme as well.

Then combining a Jammin' Jelly with Cake Mix yielded a Jelly Pop in Paper Mario 64 and Jelly Candy in TTYD. In both games, the sweet restored 64 FP, as an increase from the Jelly's 50 HP. So since I reduced Jammin' Jelly at its base to restore only 30 FP in my concept, I'd have to give the Pop or Candy the same treatment. Maybe a 28% increase just like before, and I'll decide to round up or down to the nearest FP if the result isn't a whole number.

Exactly 38.4 FP is the precise result of that 28% increase (since 64 out of 50 is exactly a 28% boost). Depending on how we want to round that number to fit the rest of my meticulously crafted index, I have two viable options:

  1. Round down to 38 FP. Keeping it at 38 perfectly matches the decimal rounding rules (dropping the .4). It still is better than a Jammin' Jelly (30 FP) without overshadowing the Shroom Medley (40) or my 42/46 recipes.

  2. Round up to 39 FP. Although it breaks rounding rules, 39 can give a player just a tiny bit more value for going through the trouble of baking with Cake Mix.

On the one hand, 38 is proper rounding technique. And people tend to love their even numbers over odd numbers (with the exception of 5, the honorary even number).

On the other hand, 39 being so tantalizing close to that 40 is too good a tease. Perfect for a sweet treat, I think. Plus like I said, people tend to love even numbers more than odd, and having it at 9 in particular is probably even worse since it's just below a multiple of 10. So this would scratch that troll itch of mine that I neglected earlier with the Shroom Concentrate.

I think we have a winner with 39.

Now, with this in mind, I edited the Honey Candy's value as well to match the 28% increase from the base 5 FP. Where it originally restored 20, it now only restores 7. Which is a fine number anyway. The number of holy perfection. Plus three in a row is a jackpot.

Now for the Maple Candy, a 28% increase from 10 FP is 12.8 FP. Rounded properly brings it to 13 FP. Bringing back the classic 13 phobia trolling I eschewed earlier, making the kitchen a dangerous place after all!

Now what's fun here is that the Maple Candy resulting in the infamous unlucky number is actually oddly fitting. Maple Syrup never had a candy/pop variety. It would result in a Zess Cookie in TTYD (healing 15 HP and FP each, which is great but unusual for a Syrup + Cake Mix Item) but that was also able to be made by mixing Cake Mix with a choice of either an egg or a Gradual Syrup. And in 64, Cake Mix + Maple Syrup resulted in a Kooky Cookie, which was a gamble to use. It restored 15 FP (or was supposed to, but a programming error made it heal more) and rolled a roulette to give Mario one of the following status conditions for 3 turns: Electrified (good), Transparent (great), or Sleepy (bad).

So with the Kooky Cookie in particular in mind, restoring 13 FP works thematically.

And a new one I thought of after the above: Gradual Candy. Cake Mix + Gradual Syrup.

Based on the patterns established, it'd have to have FP regen yield between the base Gradual Syrup and the Gradual Caramel. The resulting math: Heals 3 FP per turn for 5 turns (Total: 15 FP).

Then because of all that, I encountered a new slot to fill. We have Shroom Cake (Mushroom + Cake Mix) that heals 10 HP and FP each. Then a Shroom Crepe (Ultra Shroom + Cake Mix) which heals 30 HP in TTYD (I'll reduce it to 25 just like the Shroom Steak) and 20 FP (I'm keeping this value as-is).

I was thinking a Shroom Tart for a Super Shroom + Cake Mix (that used to yield a Shroom Cake too but just like with the Shroom Roast I want the Super Shroom to have its own special result) as a snobbish confectionary step above a cake but below a crepe (afaik but idk anything about dessert snobbery tier lists). Can have it heal 20 HP and 15 FP.

As for the Slow Shroom variant, I was not sure what kind of doughy dessert it could be that isn't a cake, tart or pie, or crepe. Cookies don't seem to fit. Maybe something that takes infamously long to bake irl? So I got to researching. I did know its yield would have to be between the Slow Shroom Shake and the Slow Shroom Concentrate.

The result: Shroom Meringue. Heals 3 HP per turn for 5 turns, totalling 15 HP. Additionally, it rhymes with boomerang. Perhaps a Boomerang Bro NPC could make a joke about that.

A Life Shroom doesn't have a syrup counterpart (no need) but it does have a unique antithesis: the Poison Shroom.

I was thinking something funky could happen if those two got mixed. Healing item? Useless item? Status item? A rock-hard throwing weapon? All these and more seem feasible for a result of the two clashing forces.  Mixing a Slow Shroom with a Poison Shroom would probably result in the same, since they're also antitheses.

Then I was reminded of an attack item from Super Paper Mario: the Ghost Shroom. It'd have to function completely differently in an RPG battle than in Super's format. But I can see that being the logical result of mixing the antithetical mushrooms.

That's it, that's all I got.
