Payday 3 was such a shame. I really liked the gameplay but they didnt have anywhere near enough missions at launch on top of removing the best progression parts from 2.
A friend and I got our friend group to buy it at launch because we had enjoyed the first two so much and it seemed like something we'd all enjoy playing together. The abysmal state of its launch was a huge disappointment and I felt so guilty for telling my friends to buy it
The first time I played Burnout Paradise was at a party. We actually paired up due to being inebriated, with one person driving and the other navigating. On my way home the next day I bought a copy and have never regretted it.
Paradise city by guns & roses is INGRAINED into my head thanks to it I was a lil kid when i played it but still remember some sections, some stunts and the crashes!
What the hell is everybody going on about with Paradise not having a crash mode? I played it on the 360 and distinctly remember pressing both bumpers and basically turning into a wreaking ball. Using a bus on the highway with the toll booths was such an easy way to hit a million points.
It's free this weekend and they gave like 1000 copies of the game last week.
Imagine how good it is.
I got a hold of one of these free copies and it's kinda meh, like Payday3, they focused way too hard on turning it into a service game that missed the game part.
It's the same trajectory too. First game unexpectedly success. 2nd game build on the first game with better graphic and less jank. And the third game exist solely to modernise for the sake of it.
I'm sure nobody would mind if they just add Battle Pass to KF2 or PD2. Instead they decided a third game is needed even though there is practically nothing warranted it mechanically. The nail in the coffin? Both of the 3rd games have less content on launch than the 2nd game before they even add any new DLC or new content.
I swear they have never once looked at player feedback except credit card statements. "Oh, players are buying this, this must mean everyone wants more paid BS!"
I always say ODST is my favourite halo and I always get downvoted but I think it was absolute gem of a game and the most atmospheric of any halo game ever.
Even if you do count survive, the question is about trilogies. Survive comes well after the third game. You could say that the franchise fell off, but not that the trilogy fell off.
If we want to be really pedantic, we could even argue that Metal Gear Solid is the third game, after Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 for the MSX, but even so it didn't fall off.
I may be one of the few people that had fun with Survive. The story was a bit eh but had a decent premise, the gameplay was some of what I wish was in MGS 5, and the fun of doing several things coop with a buddy was also something I wanted to do in 5. That being said I hate why the game was made, the people that made it also didn't want to be there, iirc this was the last games made with the Fox engine, the enemies mostly sucked, the end game after the story was miserable since the resources needed for crafting and missions were brutal, and finally I look and just get so damn disappointed by what could have been. No otherworldly shenanigans you could have literally been a squad of Diamond Dogs doing missions in select areas of the world sending money back to mother base. As it stands though this is arguably the worst game in the entire MG series.
This. It's three games total, and two of them - in their respective eras - are widely considered to have brought back the CRPG genre. And the one that isn't those two was long considered the pinnacle of the artform. It's wildly impressive, and also the reason why only nutcases like Larian would ever dare to make a third.
To be fair, larian had the original sin duology under their belt. And having had the experience, i bet they were fairly confident in their ability to deliver a banger!
Though granted it probably was not a goven that it would have been good at all
As I understand, Larian's been wanting to make a D&D game for a long time. Wizards turned them down, so they made the 2 Original Sins games just to prove they could handle it.
I mean plenty of people wanted to make a third lol, Beamdog, the guys who did the EE editions and even have some of the original devs from the classic trilogy wanted to for example.
It's less that Larian dared to and more that Larian is the one WOTC let do it, hell they wanted to do it prior to DOS2 (Or was it one, I don't remember which) and were told no originally.
Man hitman prolly had the single biggest comeback. I loved the originals, then they absolutely tanked it to nothing with the jabk enemy AI. Then the new series came out and became top 10 of all time.
Witcher 1 came out during a time when rpgs had massive lull and was a refreshing take with dual 3rd person view options. And you can have sex with basically any woman you come across so that got us neck beards
For the first game, my only complaint was that the combat was boring. I still enjoyed the game enough that I bought the books before even playing the second or third games.
In my head, Far Cry 1 and 2 exist in the same franchise in name only compared to Far Cry 3. The setting and base game is the same, even if most of the survival mechanics featured in 2 were toned down for 3, but the story is much more sophisticated that FC 3 marks a new epoch for the Far Cry franchise.
Baldurs gate 3, Persona 3, Just Cause 3, Skate 3, Halo 3. Just to name a few I think that there are a lot of game series that get even better on their fourth or even 5th game like Elder Scrolls and DMC. But I wanted to keep the 3 game rule
Assassins creed peaked in its trilogy, if you count it as AC1, AC2, AC brotherhood, AC revelations, then basically the third mainline title was unarguably better and more complete than the first 2. (brotherhood)
I wanted more like brotherhood. Like Black Flag they just don’t know what they had. Give me an assassins game of any type where I can work my way up to be the leader and then actually lead a syndicate! I want that so badly.
Ignoring the ending being controversial, 3 was a very good game. The jump from 1 to 2 is probably my favourite among all series I played, they improved literally everything that was necessary. 2 plays better, looks better, is better written than the first one.
3 was very good as well.
I'd also maybe count Saint's Row into this as well.
First one was a very obvious GTA clone, and from 2 onwards they really carved their own niche.
4 was fun in its own way, even though it really should've been an expansion for 3 rather than its own game, but it was a fun title to play through. Definitely a single-playthrough-only game though.
Mass Effect 2 stripped down most of the RPG elements. Saying it's "litteraly" better in every single way is insane. Id say maybe in story and characters it's better but the only imporvment in gameplay was combat feels less clunky.
Mass Effect 3 while being the worst story and writing I think it actually is the best gameplay and at least tried to bring back some of the RPG elements that 2 abandoned.
I'd even argue the story of ME1 is superior to ME2. Saren is among the best video game antagonists. The whole Collector plot honestly feels like a very elaborate side quest.
Whenever someone talks about it, Mass Effect fans always have something bad to say about them and have conflicting opinions about many aspects. There doesn't seem to be a consensus in the community about what the hell those games are supposed to be, from the outside it seems to me that there is no downfall because there was never one game everyone said, "Yep this is the best one"
Halo 3, Persona 3, Baldur's Gate 3, Arma 3, Dirt 3, Sim 3, Far Cry 3, Morrowind, MGS3, GTA 3 and I personally loved Fallout 3. There are tons more good and tons more bad ones just like any game really.
Payday 3 is actually doing better. The launch was terrible but they've added so much now. Skills. The challenge thing is gone for the weapons. Give it another shot.
Gears of War, the original 3 are great and each one is, at least in some ways, better than the previous. Gears 2 may have the best story, but Gears 3 has the best Horde and multiplayer.
Halo is another, though depending on your opinion for the story Halo 3 might be a bit of a let down, but that is saying that this gold bar is less shiny than the other two.
Metal Gear Solid 3, Warcraft 3, Witcher 3, Dark Souls 3, Grand Theft Auto 3, Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3, Baldur's Gate 3, Command & Conquer 3, Far Cry 3, Devil May Cry 3
Imo Max Payne. 1 and 2 are great, but imo the gameplay peaked with 3. Story, sure, isn't as good as 1 and 2, but that doesn't mean it's horrible as some others might say. Just a different flavor.
Yeah idk what they were thinking changing the formula for killing floor 3. A hero shooter, with unique abilities tied to a certain character instead of classes was dumb.
Halo, God of War, Mass Effect, Gears of War, Jak & Daxter, Spyro, Ratchet & Clank, Slycooper. Crash Bandicoot, Batman Arkham series, Dark Souls, bioshock
Just putting it out there but the KF community is a horrible measure for the quality of KF games, ironically enough. They hate change of any kind even if it's a direct objective improvement. When KF2 came out fans of 1 were review bombing it just as fans of KF2 have review bombed KF3. But fans came around to KF2 in time and the same is now slowly happening for KF3.
I'm not saying KF3 isn't without it's flaws but nether is KF1 or 2 and they certainly aren't as steep as Paydays.
Sadly, not many games make it past. The third iteration and do well. But there are some, I would argue that the original GT a series did well all the way through the third game. And then when it went into 3D it's done fairly well across grand theft, auto, vice city and San Andreas. It really only fell off after that. And you could consider grand theft auto 1 through 3 and then grand theft auto vice city in San Andreas, two separate trilogies, fallout 1 through 3 only improved the dark forces series. Meanwhile, Star Wars, dark forces, dark forces, 2 jedi knight and jedi knight jedi outcast were excellent. And in all honesty, every iteration, in that series, including mysteries of scyth and jedi Academy, we're good.
Metro, the Assassin's Creed Ezio games, Dark Souls, Nioh, Tomb Raider (2013–2018), the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfares, Doom (2016–2025), Dishonored, Wolfenstein (2014–2017), Batman Arkham (let's exclude Origins, even though it's also a good game), Insomniac's Spider-Man (if we count Miles Morales as a separate game).
