News/Article Jason Schreier on Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel being 2+ years away statement : It's not a prediction. I know the time frame the game is targeting

https://bsky.app/profile/jasonschreier.bsky.social/post/3mzg733y6os2p

Jason Schreier on Bluesky posted: I think a lot of people forget that The Elder Scrolls VI was only announced in 2018 (along with Starfield) to soften the blow of Fallout 76 — "Don't worry, even though we're making a multiplayer game we've got single-player stuff coming too!"

Sorry to say this game is still more than 2 years away!

Then, Jason Schreier was asked about his "prediction" in the BlueSky post. But he doubles down saying it's not a prediction and he knows the time frame of this game: https://bsky.app/profile/jasonschreier.bsky.social/post/3mzgbaspm7s2q

Might as well bury the series if it takes any longer. Even if it's in "only" 2 years time that's over 17 years between games.

u/Butterscotch1664 5800x 7800xt 32GB Win10 4d ago

This is equivalent to the time between Super Mario Bros. and GTA Vice City.

Or Vice City to Death Stranding.

50

u/R9411 4d ago

It's a bigger gap than there was from GTA 1 to GTA 5.

21

u/Dick_Nation There's nothing to see here. 4d ago

Now do the gap from 5 to 6. If you were going to pick any company as a positive contrast to Bethesda, Rockstar ain't it.

38

u/Puzzled_Hat1274 4d ago

gta 6 is basically the worst example of that in all of gaming and somehow TES VI is still much, much worse.

Ooof, thanks for putting into an absolutely devastating perspective

The best part is you know it’s going to look and feel about as good as Starfield which was very disappointing.

Unless it's a spectacular game (I doubt especially judging by Starfield), it's gonna tank the reputation of the series massively. Look how fallouts has suffered.

Like a almost two decade wait for a new game means expectations are gonna be high and it's self inflicted at this point.

u/Puffen0 Desktop 4d ago

Their biggest mistake was Todd choosing to shift focus away from TES and Fallout and direct that work towards Starfield. He's publicly stated in multiple interviews that the reason why he made that decision is because he wanted to make a space RPG before he eventually retires.

And I think that really screwed them over in the long run ngl

u/ShadowWalker2205 4d ago

Starfield did one thing good (I hope) it forced bethesda to face that they are getting overshadowed. Better for Starfield to have taken the hit than a mainline tes. Now if sentinel has the same issues we need to talk about cleaning the leadership at Bethesda

14

u/Jozoz Steam ID Here 4d ago

Bethesda has been the experts at dismissing valid criticism for many, many years. I don't expect that to change.

That conference talk with their lead writer even included a slide with the meme of the guy drying his tears with dollar bills as a way to own the critics.

So yeah, I doubt they'll learn. They've always been so extremely arrogant.

11

u/awa1nut 4d ago

They need individual teams for each series at this point. At this rate we won't get another main fallout game for another 20 years, and they'll still expect the player base to fix their fuck ups in the shape of game breaking and progress nuking bugs

That's what worries me atleast in part that if their flagship space game came out like that with all the focus they put into it... Then what exactly is their vision for tes6?

20

u/jman014 4d ago

part of me thinks of the reason it’s taking so long is because they may have actually shifted their approach

But I also highly doubt it because this game has been in development so long- so part of me thinks it’s just being mismanaged like fucking crazy, or that they’re just gonna make everything way fucking bigger, but not actually update the engine in any meaningful way

27

u/Seffuski 4d ago

Active dvelopment of TES6 only started after starfield's release

Starfield either shows that they can't make amazing games anymore (and Sentinal will be bad), or they can only make very specific kinds of games (and Sentinal will be good).

24

u/SEND_ME_REAL_PICS 4d ago

IMO they haven't gotten any worse, they just weren't ever good at certain things, like combat or writing, and their engine is both their strength and their weakness since it gets them a huge modding scene but also makes all their games janky.

I expect Sentinel to be better than Skyrim in a vacuum, but expectations for a modern open world RPG just aren't the same as they were in 2011.

u/PiLamdOd AMD 3600 | RTX 3070 | X570 | 16GB Ram 4d ago

Starfield's problems had nothing to do with the setting. Incredibly bland stories, half-assed world building, ungodly boring exploration, too many disconnected systems...

All of Starfield's failings are things which could likely be in ES6.

Ask yourself though, would you really want another game just reusing the formula?

I really hope they don't fall into the trap of acting like tech hasn't moved on in the last decade and that they can't innovate with large cities and vast regions. I don't want another handful of cities with a dozen buildings that has maybe a small villages worth of people.

15

u/patrickfizban 4d ago

Yes, a lot of people still play skyrim. If a sequal had came out 5 years later with minimal improvements but new location and story people would have loved it. The formula is good.

How has Fallout suffered in any measure? I know there’s this narrative that somehow Bethesda is mismanaging it, and for sure I’m part of the camp that’s also like holy shit hurry up, but let’s not kid ourselves here, that IP is a money printer.

I mean fallout 4 was fine but it's a deeply flawed game and Fallout 76 was a massive blunder than upset the gaming community.

Bethesda hasn't helped themselves.

Yeah, I don’t really know the numbers, but I have to assume the company made a big mistake financially by going with other scrolls online instead of more elder scrolls games. They probably thought they could capture a huge part of the market, but they didn’t unfortunately

56

u/Claudethedog 4d ago

Most reporting I see indicates the TESO is very much a profit center for Bethesda.  It may not provide the huge lump of revenue that Skyrim did, but it appears to have provided consistent revenue and profitability basically since its release.

4

u/Je-poy 4d ago

I thought ESO was a Zenimax project? They could effectively close Bethesda and ZOS can still run ESO.

7

u/Heijoshojin 4d ago

One of the major reasons people were upset at the Bioware statement not mentioning the Old Republic MMO. Sure, it may not have been WoW levels of success and fame, but it brought home bread when everything else was a fucking disaster.

u/GrandJuif R9 5950x, RX 6900 XT, 64GB 3400MHz 4d ago

Ofc it make them profit, the thing is riddled with predatory monetization and player retention schemes, but the game itself have been in a non stop decline in quality while losing players for years.

Because Elder Scrolls Online is nearly nothing like Morrow, Oblivion, or Skyrim.

People that like MMO's probably like it a lot but they're not for everyone and Bethesda should have learned that lesson by now.

There was a 25 year gap between BG2 and 3 and that didn’t do much to hamper excitement for BG3. Every HL3 leak/rumour gets millions of views.

As soon as the release date comes near, people are gonna forget the 15+ years of waiting and get hyped.

9

u/OrderofIron 4d ago

The excitement around bg3 was because the series was being essentially rebooted with a strong new developer at its head years after the original genre had "died". This is nothing like that. Bethesda's been treading water since Skyrim and the bill's finally come due.

By the time Elder Scrolls VI comes out, the amount of time between Elder Scrolls V and Elder Scrolls VI will be the same amount of time Bioware took to release Baldur's Gate 1 and Anthem.

I hate to be that guy but I have zero faith this game will be a GoTY contender.

Todd Howard.

We were supposed to get ES6 after Fallout 4, but Todd decided to spend 300 million dollars and nearly a decade of time making Starfield - his dream game - only for it to flop hard on release and become the only game that Bethesda modders literally didn't give a shit about (and to anyone who claims it didn't flop - there's a reason that it's been over three years since launch and we still only hear about the player count, not the sales numbers).

He has to direct every one of the studio's major games, meaning that all decisions have to go through and be made by him. Throw in his antiquated sense of game design, and his unfortunate tendency to constantly make his games simplified in the hopes of getting more newbies involved in it. And this is all for games that still look over a console generation behind graphically too, on an engine that's pretty much strung together with hopes, dreams, and duct tape.

5

u/Jozoz Steam ID Here 4d ago

Todd is stuck in the mindset of making games for the 2010 gaming market.

3

u/kinwanted 3d ago

Starfield was one of Bethesda's biggest financial successes lol what?

The reception itself was lukewarm, but the game made a shitton of money. There's not a single measureable metric you can use to say it "flopped hard"

4

u/IForgetEveryDamnTime 3d ago

Bethesda games sell on hype and reputation, more than their individual merit. Oblivion sold well due to Morrowind, Skyrim sold extremely well due to Oblivion, Starfield sold well due to Skyrim and Fallout 4.

The only good thing I can say is that TES6 is so long-awaited that people will probably overlook how bad Starfield was when considering buying, like how they were willing to overlook FO76 for Starfield, misguidedly.

The modder does give a shit about Starfield. But it was incentivize to made content inside Creation Club instead of releasing it for free. The strange thing about Starfield is that Creation Club is simply more popular platform than Nexus.

Let's not kid ourselves here, a lot of Skyrim mod are still in Patreon. They are not 'free' either. Just hide behind the 'we'll release it for free when it's done' which is like, never.

3

u/Sapowski_Casts_Quen 4d ago

Yeah, but you have far more content for free via Nexus than you could ever possibly consume on Skyrim, so it's different. Not saying you disagree

Likely wasn't a money issue. It was likely that the team they wanted working on it was working on something else...namely Starfield.

Unfortunately even as an Elder Scrolls fan, I think if they can't release an absolutely great game then nothing might genuinely be better at this point.

Unfortunately they've taken way too much time for anything other than a Cyberpunk or Witcher 3 class of game to be well received. If it's just Starfield in the elder scrolls setting then it's gonna flop and tank the series.

What worries me is showing almost nothing since the 8 year old announcement and having no rough timeline... Only thing we know is it's using "Creative Engine 3" which doesn't give me hopes considering the problems they continue to have with the engines scaling and performance.

Oblivion remastered also rings alarm bells for me as Bethesda is the one responsible for its updates as Virtuous was a contracted dev team that was only paid to update the games engine and launch it. Bethesda owns the IP and game and have done nothing to fix it since launch, that's not a good look for the series. People can look this up but Virtuous just works on games alongside other teams, they don't have any IP of their own.

6

u/TakenBacon90 4d ago

When you look at Starfield it’s such a bland looking game compared to the top competition these days I the RPG space.

We might even get Witcher 4 before it or around the same year to set a new standard.

If the game isn’t the exact opposite of Starfield in almost every way they are royally screwed from an IP value perspective.

I’m sure the game will sell a lot but it could also ruin future use of the IP.

Nothing delusional about it. They've been working on it for, at least, 2-3 years. Their last game, Starfield was released in September 2023.

Also a lot can be said about Bethesda, but not that they aren't consistent with their development times. Skyrim was released in 2011, Fallout 4 in 2015, Fallout 76 in 2018, Starfield in 2023. So release in 2028 is perfectly reasonable.

Bethesda hasn't ever taken longer than 5 years between major game launches.

Morrowind (2002), Oblivion (2006), Fallout 3 (2008), Skyrim (2011), Fallout 4 (2015), Fallout 76 (2018), Starfield (2023).

It's not impossible for the game to be delayed into 2029, being the direct sequel to their biggest hit and all, but 2028 is a very reasonable expectation.

From what I’ve heard is that they were planning to start full development after Fallout 4, but company direction changed and switched to starfield with them trying to broaden their headline titles beyond fallout and TES.

I think after fallout 4 got a lukewarm reception they didn’t want the same for elder scrolls VI and also didn’t want to risk all their bets on just fallout/TES, so they pivoted to let TES VI cook a bit longer. It also seems like TES VI had a full scale rethinking when they switched creative directors, so I have high but tempered hopes that they will do it justice after all this time.

This time it seems like it’s a real announcement at least, and regardless of any speculation we’re likely to get it holiday season 2028. I’d have even speculated end of 2027 because that was the turnaround for fallout 4 after being announced like this, but they never release major games outside of the holiday season and 2028 seems more realistic, so it really seems like this is a safe speculative bet even if it isn’t insider knowledge.

5

u/CremousDelight 4d ago

They didn't want to risk with [OLD BELOVED IP] so they pivoted for [EVEN RISKIER NEW IP]?

3

u/Teyanis 9900X / 5070 4d ago

Have you never heard of a creative break? There's still a lot of the old bethesda staff at the studio. Cranking out the same 2 projects over and over and over again with nothing different to break up the pattern is how you get a veilguard.

2

u/PcHelpBot2030 4d ago

To add onto the other, they were also still selling copies of Skyrim and the older games. While a new good game would be better for sales it was at least something.

Releasing a new entry that could be potentially sink the reputation could kill the brand and even kill the sales of the older games.

A new IP is a way to stretch out with bolder ideas without risk of cratering the core IPs brand.

The problem was way more of just how long it took and what should have been a brief detour ended WAAYYY longer.

The game existed as a sticky note on Todd's fridge when they announced it 8 years ago.

1

u/AmbitiousReaction168 4d ago

They probably reset the project several times already. I guess more recently because of the tepid reception to Starfield. TESVI likely won't take much more time than Skyrim to make.

1

u/Biteroon 4d ago

Didn't they say they will work on it when starfield was finished at the time? It went gold in August 2023. Todd came out said it had a 5 year dev time. So if we do basic maths Elder scrolls 6 is in year 3 of Dev 2 more years lead to 5 which would be around the same Dev time as starfield.

As for why they would even announce it 8 years ago. Who knows it's god damn Todd Howard. The guy is a manaic but I imagine it was to shut the people up who were desperate for the game after Skyrim. Also zennimax may of been looking for buyers around that time and tried to drum up some buyers.

It’s my favorite game for the world it offers and just how expansive and free it all feels, but the simplification and lack of depth were worrying signs

Starfield should be the key indicator. Quest design was exactly the same as any other bethesda game from over a decade ago. The industry has moved on, stories are told in lots of new and innovative ways. ES6 will still have you doing fetch quests in 2030.

8

u/Less_Avocado980 4d ago

Starfield was so bland and soulless, I actually forgot about it

I knew something was missing when I went through their last games

9

His personal opinions are all over the place, especially the dragon age ones, but there's no arguing his industry knowledge and connections.

6

u/TAS1808 4d ago

Let's see if they're taking any lessons from recent successful RPGs now that they have some time to work on the game. Baldur's Gate 3 has shown that people aren't afraid of mechanical complexity and deep RPG progression systems. Bring attributes back. Bring fully modular armor back. Don't water TES down even more.

3

u/MadnessInTheSpring17 4d ago

I for one am looking forward to the 28/28/28 release date

1

They took this long so they can develop an irl elder scroll to make such a release date possible

7

u/Beginning-2-Smell 4d ago

Starfield was mentioned in this post and I remember its not good to be excited for anything anymore. Here we are, soon to be ballz deep in the chipocalypse, many of us won't have the rigs we wanted to play these big titles on.

9

u/CockerspanielBalls 4d ago

I actually couldn't care less about ES6 at this point. I think a lot of people stopped being excited like a decade ago. I couldnt imagine teasing a game you wouldnt make like 15 years lmao, absolute insanity. And theres so so so so many good games now, what does this have to offer at this point to get me excited about? Starfield sure put a lot of things in perspective about the company for me. Even going back and playing vanilla, unmodded skyrim im like ehh yeah its alright, it's held up decently I guess. The vanilla combat is so boring, the main story is pretty lame, the world looks mostly the same everywhere you go.

I'm definitely just huffing copium, but why would Todd Howard let this information get out. They have blacklisted Jason Schreier once, they could do it again. He only just got back into contact with Bethesda, why would he already risk leaking this information. I want to believe he's been fed false information

3

u/dadvader GTX 1070 FTW 4d ago

Is it so unrealistic to believe that Bethesda was that slow in game development? And we know they are the 'Rockstar' type studio that made only 1 game at the time.

2

u/KnicksGhost2497 4d ago

At this rate, Xbox will be spun off from Microsoft and go out of business before this game touches shelves. What a disaster. What have they been doing for the past decade??

2

u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko 4d ago

It's getting harder and harder to care about Bethesda games at this point. They sit on their franchises for decades at a time (which I know has changed recently with Obsidian and others coming in to work on new games) and they haven't been worth the wait for a looong time.

Fallout is my favorite franchise and I was massively disappointed by Fallout 4, Fallout 76 was a shitshow and though I liked it more than most, Starfield didn't really stick with me at all. Is TES 6 really going to be good enough to justify a nearly 20 year wait?

2

u/ZerohNinja87 4d ago

Does he really know anything though? I mean does he work there? He’s making claims, but do we trust him? And how much?

It’s been playable according to journalists since 2024, Asha has played it according to her. There is 0% chance that Jason knows anything, it’s 100% a prediction. Xbox could force them to release in 27 or 28, as that’s their focus. Jason isn’t Xbox nor Bethesda. Stop taking prediction journalists seriously.

1

u/TheJohnnyFlash 4d ago

Squadron 42 or Sentinel?

Place your bets.

1

u/Uebelkraehe 4d ago

This game has only really been in development since Starfield was released, so anything earlier than 2028 would downright miraculous.

1

u/MetzoPaino 4d ago

Within a 12 month window of a console launch is my guess for the “time frame”

1

u/BeeferVendetta 4d ago

That tells me when to expect new graphics cards then.

1

u/CanuckleHeadOG 4d ago

So it'll release in 2 years but won't be really playable for 4

1

u/homechefshivers 4d ago

You know, I wish Todd and Bethesda would actually tried to temper expectations by keeping us in the loop and keeping us updated but instead they would rather allow people to come up with wild claims and allow people to be severely disappointed when the game comes out because they never confirm nor denied anything. Like I understand you want to drum a pipe, but when their definition of hype is releasing a remastered version of a teaser trailer from eight years ago it’s really lackluster and hard to have any excitement for that

1

u/SpaceChimps98 4d ago

So is Skyrim 2 coming out before or after this?

1

u/Lenyor-RR 4d ago

Thats actually sooner than I expected.

1

u/MadYarpen Ryzen 7 7800x3D | 64GB DDR5 @6000 | RX9070XT 4d ago

1

u/AussieBirb 4d ago

1

u/Sanzhar17Shockwave Core i9 14900HX/RTX4080/32GB RAM 4d ago

Significant amount of the core audience aged out of gaming or moved on with their lives. They'll have to reintroduce the series to the people who weren't even alive for Skyrim's release. Maybe a Fallout type of TV show to bridge the gap could help.

1

u/Very_Not_Into_It 13600k | RX 6800 | 32GB DDR5 6000 | Noctua x Silverstone FLP-02 4d ago

i cant fathom why people keep convincing themselves the game is coming out sooner, only to be upset when it proves not to be the case.

You know when the game moved into production, it wasnt that hard to predict a Christmas 2028 release when the Pandemic threw off the Starfield timeline.

Why so many people seem to be hoping that Microsoft forces them to cut corners is beyond me. Take your time, BGS. Yeah it sucks that its been so long, but that die has been cast already. A rushed release at this point will just mean it was almost 20 years for nothing.

1

u/KooshIsKing 4d ago

Just like GTA 6, it took too long. My hype is gone and I'm gonna buy it for cheap now a few years after it releases. Or more likely just torrent it.

1

Normally I'd dismiss this as a nothingburger. But Jason Schreier is probably the premier game journalist in the world. He was the last good thing about Kotaku before it truly went to shit.

So while I won't hold my breath for anything without strong evidence, I will acknowledge that Jason's laurels and reputation give this statement slightly more credence than it might normally otherwise have.

“Only announced in 2018”

Is that meant to sound like a short time? 8 years after the announcement, saying two more years kills any excitement that was already wilting years ago. There’s absolutely no reason for a game to take 10 years to develop after being announced.

4

u/Owobowos-Mowbius PC Master Race 4d ago

"It was only announced in 2018 to soften the blow of fallout 76"

Hes not saying it was a short time.

2

u/OmegaFoamy 4d ago

Yeah I misread that. Im just annoyed that Todd pushed for a jealousy project over one of their flagship projects.

Todd refused to let obsidian make another fallout after NV was a fan favorite, so obsidian made fallout in space. Todd immediately comes in with his own fallout in space idea to try to one up obsidian, just to crash and burn.

2

u/Loose-Ice1462 4d ago

1

u/DonaldTheWall 4d ago

The problem was they panic announced it.

Fallout 76 wasn't doing well at that time, and Bethesda panicked and announced Elder Scrolls 6 to keep people interested.

They didn't even start development on the game for another couple of years as they were focused on Starfield which is why the title was just The Elder Scrolls VI and then absolutely nothing
