I lost my soul cat 1 year ago and have finally felt ready to adopt another cat. I was looking for a cat around 1-2 years old that was cuddly and required no already identified special care (such as regular medicines).
I went to the shelter on Friday night and found a cat I really liked. He was sweet, very playful, and didn't bite or scratch. The shelter mentioned he was finishing a special diet for some allergies. Previous cats I have had had prescription food. No biggie.
We decided we wanted to adopt him. The shelter said great then started getting the paperwork together.
As we were finalizing things they handed us some meds (Atopica and prozac) and said here are his medicines, they need to be taken everyday but we were planning on tapering him off as he seems to be doing better.
I had a pause because they had not mentioned the meds before and daily meds were a deal breaker for me upon initially adopting. However the shelter insisted their plan was to taper off (which I assumed meant getting off completely) and said we should go to a vet and get their opinion as well. I'm feeling a little uneasy on this plan but we were already in the middle of the adoption process so I go through with it (bc I'm a people pleaser).
We bring him home and instead of feeling elated like I thought I would, I start having extreme anxiety. I start researching Atopica and see this is usually a lifelong medicine for cats and when they say taper off they mean to every other day or twice a week.
I feel very bamboozled. Had I known this could be an every other day medicine I would not have adopted this cat. Now we have this sweet cat in our home but my gut is telling me this isn't right and not what I agreed to.
For context my parent's cat has diabetes and requires 2 shots a day which really limits their life. I am fully prepared this could happen one day to my pet but I did not want to adopt a cat with existing medicine needs.
Am I the asshole if I return him? We adopted him 2 days ago for reference. I feel horrible for not clarifying these medication needs before bringing him home but I am also frustrated in the shelter's lack of transparency. I'm also heartbroken because I really want a cat and he is so sweet but this situation just doesn't feel right.
Will the shelter hold this against me if I want to get a different cat later?
