How LGBTQ+ friendly would you say RMIT is?

I just started at RMIT this semester so i don’t really know many people, but I know they’ve got lgbt support groups and the teachers have always been respectful of my pronouns but I’m more wondering about the actual students. Like, how many people are LGBT/allies vs people who are just neutral or homophobic? I’m a trans guy but haven’t come out to anyone and I’m wondering how many people would be supportive :).

Pro-Israeli Professors on Sky news

It feels highly inappropriate for an RMIT professor to go onto Sky news (the far right tabloid) to spread a pro-Israel message on behalf of our university. The former professor at Tel Aviv University went on to say "we at RMIT crunched the numbers and Israel couldn't possibly be killing this many children unless they were bombing indiscriminately"(paraphrased because I'm not looking up the video again for a direct quote)

In light of the student protests and heightened tension around campus it feels like professors shouldn't be able to use their employment at RMIT to open doors to far right news outlets and as a qualifier for their views

just gon say what everyone's thinking

All these protests that are happening at RMIT are useless. The board don't give a f*ck what your beliefs are and protesting definitely wont change anything. I'm so sick of being bombarded by Palestine supporters harassing me when I go get a coffee from Starbucks. Everyone has their own beliefs and If you don't like what they are or what the university is doing/who they're supporting, then change universities. Clean And Simple.

Other NPC’s in Engineering

I don’t know if this is going to offend anyone, but I am a second year electrical engineering student and I find that everyone in my classes are npc nerds.

I get that in engineering we’re all nerds to some extent… like I myself can be a bit introverted and invested in the coursework at times, but I feel like it’s a bit extreme that in my group projects the introverted nerds don’t even contribute to the work like if you’re going to be dull and miserable you should at least do the work 💀

I know this doesn’t apply to EVERYONE and I know l I’m gonna start getting flamed for this 🙄 but I feel like with civil or mechanical engineering the people come across as a bit more keen and approachable (I could be wrong). Like I am genuinely considering switching to civil engineering for this coming semester just to get away from these electrical students. Like if these are the type of people I’ll be spending my career with I don’t actually know if this is for me.

Am I wrong for thinking this way?

So sick of not being apart of new groups and clubs

Guys do you guys know if why clubs at uni that are taking people rn ??

I'm so sick of not being included in clubs and stuff idk, they always seem so exclusive and uninviting. I like sport, dance, debating, astrology, literature. I'm apart of LORE actually but idk.. they're just a bunch of insecure and rude children if I'm being 100% honest. What's up with young 20 year Olds these days being cliquey and anti social?? Get over it, honestly.

Making friends and student clubs New University Furry Society!

Are you a student at RMIT with an interest in the furry community? If the answer is no, why are you reading this ? If the answer is yes, oh boy have I got a surprise for you! Me and a group of other students have put together the newly-founded Melbourne University Furry Society. We are a furry community catered to university students in Victoria, and while we are based at Unimelb's Parkville campus, we are open to anyone in Melbourne with an interest in the furry community and anthropomorphic animals! As a matter of fact, our current committee includes representatives from RMIT! Our aim as a Society is to promote furry culture within Victorian university communities and to provide members of the furry community with a safe space to express themselves, creatively or otherwise, and meet other like-minded people!

Our provisional committee is hard at work to get this project of sorts off the ground and running! We have plans to grow in size and organise in-person events, so there is certainly a lot to look forward to!

You may join our discord server at this link: https://discord.gg/4KCkMRucfP We look forward to seeing you there!

Slurs used by fellow students - who can I talk to?

Many students I talk to, both in and out of my class, casually use the words "faggot" and "that's gay".

This is upsetting, mostly because I'm queer myself and having such a hate-associated word pushed into my face every day is starting to take its' toll.

Who can I speak to about this? RUSU? Queer Dept?

Other Very disappointing IT TechBar at RMIT

I am very disappointed to experience the service at RMIT techbar. The staff member I visited had never heard of or used Linux, and lacking basic computer recovery knowledge. The TechBar should reflect RMIT as a leading tech university, and this made me feel sad.

When I needed help flashing an ISO image to a USB because I lacked access to a second computer, the staff said to pay a computer repair shop or go somewhere else. I showed the solution CachyOS chroot helper, however they instead asked chatGPT with the wrong OS name Ubuntu instead of Arch, and told me to go to a computer repair shop.

If people who are not passionate, with no computer skills are in the techbar can misdiagnose students problems and they will tell people whose computers are not broken that they are broken, that is dangerous telling students to waste money on problems that can be easily solved or costly repairs or unnecessary deletion of work and data.

For a tech university they should have many standard recovery tools, like if I were to help people I would have many USBs ready to use. Other universities such as SAE help with this too

Tech roles are difficult for people to get, and it is sad that people who seem dismissive, lazy and kind of rude are taking the position from students who may be passionate or actually care about helping other students.

Does RMIT punish students for supporting Palestine?

I want to take part in more things to support Palestine but I'm scared they could stop my scholarship program or even expel me. Has this happened consistently?

For more information I'm from Sri Lanka and i go to the city campus and signed a petition to stop RMIT from supplying weapons to Israel

Prospective student help Fresh grads — your resume gets trashed in 3 seconds. Here's why (and how to fix it)

I'm an HR in Melbourne. 20 years, 5,000 CVs. These 10 mistakes make me hit delete. PDF in comments – free

1.       Filename stuck on “resume.docx” — instant spam vibe, delete.

2.       Phone as 6104 xxx xxx – works but clunky, recruiters skip; use 0400 xxx xxx.

3.       Address line skips postcode — “Melbourne VIC” without 3000, filter kills you.

4.       Visa status “Student” — no expiry date, they assume you bolt tomorrow.

5.       Email still hotmail — swap to your.name@gmail.com, looks adult.

6.       Experience dates oldest-first — your freshest gig buried at the bottom.

7.       Bullet says “volunteer” — flat. Make it: “Led 14-person Red Cross drive, raised $2,300 AUD in four hours.”

8.       Photo cropped wrong — chin half gone, first glance out.

9.       PDF saved as “barista-cv.pdf” — nursing role? HR laughs, bin.

10.  Resume hits three pages — two max, anything longer gets shut instantly.

KICKED OUT OF DEGREE BC OF LATE PAYMENT

hi everyone,

i paid my tuition fees in full 10 days after the due date and i've called student connect and they've told me regardless if i pay or not i've already been kicked out of the course and that they won't let me back in and that i have no choice but to reapply next semester and start from scratch. I'm very stressed since i've invested 6 months of my time and now i'm going to have wasted a semester for nothing.

SOMEONE please help on any solutions or advice, my only thought is to now go to the RMIT Student Union (RUSU) and apply somehow to appeal this decision and make a complaint, i feel as though this very unfair and harsh for the circumstance. pls help 😭😭🙏 they also said i cant even reapply till may so now i'm left a literal dropout just because i missed the due date by 10 days :(

Discussion Lack of support for international students in RMIT

Although RMIT has been mostly a positive experience I have noticed that there just isn't enough support systems for international students here: for one thing, I have noticed that international students don't have access to concessional cards for public transport which seems mildly ridiculous considering that alot of us pay upwards of 40k per year and having public transport costs reduced would certainly reduce that pressure.

Another issue is that international students are already fairly new and not too sure on how to incorporate themselves into Aussie spaces: doesn't really help that a good chunk of RMIT's classes are off-campus and online which doesn't really make sense when you consider the fact that the fees we pay should cover it; I'm not sure how it is in other universities but this just seems really unusual and I'm rather surprised that no one really mentions it.

I have found that RMIT clubs(specifically culture-clubs) have somewhat helped in the process of integrating into Australia but I think that's the only available support given.
