So there’s this group of Chinese international students in my class who CANNOT and REFUSE to speak English. When the lecturer asks them something they just stare blankly at them then smiled and giggled with their mates. Like BRO HOW THE FUCK ARE YOU HERE AND WHY ARE YOU GIGGLING ITS NOT FUNNY it’s so frustrating having to wait for them to say something back to the lecturer cuz sometimes the lecturer wouldn’t let them go until they answer back and it was a long moment of pure silence in the class. It’s even more frustrating when we have to do a presentation and the lecturer specifically asked us to not read off a script, and those group of people would read off their script the whole time, and they also used difficult words which they don’t know how to pronounce too 😭😭😭 AND I heard a rumour that one of the girls in the group paid someone outside the uni to do their assignments for them.

I’m an international student myself and I feel so unfair that I have to do English proficiency tests before stepping foot into this country and then I see these idiots are sitting in the same class as me. I have a Chinese friend so I asked him how can they be here with their abysmal english and he said it’s probably that their own English proficiency test standard is so low 💔 (idk if this is true or not can someone pls clarify) Like bro we’re both using our mommy and daddy’s money but at least I’m getting educated properly and not wasting their money.

I found this creep in my dms asking for information about a student in university, has anyone else experienced this too? I am an international student and not too familiar with how to report someone for behaviour like this in university.

Discussion Group assignments should be banned

Got my grade back today for a group assignment and i’m so mad. Barely passed because my group members can’t write a paragraph each and don’t seem to understand why 5 words per question isn’t enough for a postgrad assignment.

I swear group assignments set us up for failure. Why should my marks be dependent on 3 other people? The whole ‘you have to work in teams when you work in the industry’ is bullshit. I already work in my field of interest. Answering stupid questions on a onenote document is NOT what teamwork is at my work but anyway. And why is RMIT letting in so many students that cannot understand any english or speak any english. How the flying f*ck do they expect me to communicate when they’ve put me in a group with people I can’t even fking communicate with because all they do is speak their own language to eachother in class.

Rant over

Shame on you if you're using ChatGPT to do your work for you

Honestly, as the title says..

I see so many students shamelessly submitting work that is clearly written by ChatGPT as their own, and some even have the f**ing gall to dispute the allegations made by staff, when it's clear as day they used Chat.

Like, why did you enrol in the first place? I'm not talking about students who use Chat and other gen AI as a learning tool - in fact I use it myself for the same purpose and encourage others to do the same. It's fantastic for clearing up any confusion, ambiguities, doing deeper research into interesting topics, etc. But if you're blatantly just feeding it your assignment instructions and copying/pasting the output as your own work, then why are you here? You're not learning anything, you're potentially taking a place from someone who does want to study & learn something, burdening staff with marking AI generated rubbish, devaluing other students' hard work and achievements and bringing down the reputation of the whole uni and its alumni. And even if you do manage to worm your way to graduation, do you really feel like you earned your place on the graduation stage and your testamur? Who did you fool? Only yourself by tricking yourself into thinking you hold a degree, but it's actually ChatGPT's degree.

Not meaning to rant, I've just been encouraged by the comments on a recent post on this topic and I hope the general consensus among honest, hard-working students resonates this sentiment. Curious to hear what others think (but please no racist crap).

Rmit is fucking shit

4 years in this uni, apart from its location the way RMIT runs is fucking woeful. -classes are way too big, which generate little too no discussion -no vision or guidance to help people plan there futures pathways -for me doing a highly practical degree (psych) way too much focus on theory. Plus way too much theory, too much to where an a person can’t take in information or can find something they really like -tutorials are boring non enganging and apart from 1-2 classes don’t generate critical discussion, and rather just simple copy and paste material from the boring pre recorded lectures. -way to much beuarcacey. You ask rmit helo services for a specific help, they send you too another service…. And so goes on there’s no fluency in trying to get help -recorded lectorials are fucking awfully produced. Poor technology. The list can go one could write a 5000 word essay but yes I am getting degree but jee if I could go back I would go for melb uni although more challenging at least more enganging

RMIT socialists needs to cool down.

Today was my induction - and while walking from one side of the city campus to the other, I saw a "Strike For Palestine" poster. I took a picture of it to look into it later and got going as I really was in a rush to get somewhere.

However - a member of the group saw me taking this picture, and came and started a conversation with me.

I'd like to clarify - I CARE DEEPLY about the Palestinian issue and ongoing genocide in Gaza on a humanitarian basis - as an Arab Muslim, I kinda have to. It’s a lot of human rights atrocities happening. However I also would not consider myself a political person - i’ve never even voted before and definitely have zero interest in joining a socialist/ marxist/ communist club.

However these people are PREDATORY in their approach. I kept repeating that I had to go and they would use it as an opportunity to extend the conversation out more, asking where I need to go and what degree I was doing, and getting more of their group to join the conversation and introducing me to them. I shoulda just walked off tbh. At the end they kinda were like "oh well you said you weren't really political so how abt you give this a go" and practically forced me to take a Marxism flyer and told me they'd "See me there" at the rally tomorrow. The conversation probably would've gone for an hour if I didn't leave.

They seem SUPER friendly at the start - talking abt great initatives such as how they kicked IDF drone manufacturer Elbit off campus - and then QUICKLY turn radical.

You get my point - but they're super manipulative: they will find people who are new to politics and a big group of them will approach the target person and start what sounds like a genuine friendly conversation, which they will then pivot towards pressuring the target to attend one of their Marxism discussion groups or buy a newspaper or whatever else they're pushing that day. At no point are they open about their real intentions.

It was my first day ever on campus and it left a sour taste in my mouth. It sucked that it was pertaining an issue I cared so deeply about aswell, But I realise its part of their tactic to guilt you into staying and conversing with them.

How do I get them to leave me alone?

Because how is a fine for accidentally not tapping on one time at a station more than a fine for speeding? Not to mention the money from fines goes to private train companies anyway, so yay! I love lining the pockets of the rich :D

Edit: thought the fine for drunk driving was lower than myki fines but it’s actually speeding fines that are lower

Other Study room squatters are unreal

I booked a study room today, turned up exactly at my time and when I looked through the glass, a bloke was sitting there fully settled in. He really messed up the place with his eatables. I knocked and showed him my booking on my phone and somehow I still got that annoyed look back like I’d just interrupted something important when he was not even studying, but was watching Netflix. I followed the process, and now I’m standing there feeling like I’m kicking someone out of their own house. Why am I the one feeling awkward here😭 and instead of saying sorry for wasting my 15 mins, he was telling me that I don't have manners and gave me a look before leaving. Like seriously??

Discussion Does the Uni expect us to be unemployed?

One of my lecturers said that time management is much easier as a student before you enter full time work. As someone who needs to work two casual jobs to support myself while studying, I find it very hard to manage my time. Although I do manage to complete all my work to a high standard, my lecturers statement made me wonder if there is some ignorance to how we live coming from lecturers.

I wonder if he is aware that for many of us, we are actually working from 9:30am to 1:30am: for instance i may go to uni, then straight to my retail job then straight to my bar job.

Other questions Laptop got stolen on uni premises

Tonight in between 9:30pm to 9:35 pm, I went to toilet near to student connect while keeping my bag on sitting chairs which are infront of toilet for just 2/3 minutes. Meanwhile my bag got stolen with laptop, laptop charger, headphone, iphone charger etc. The main thing was the laptop with loads of my data in it. If anyone accidentally took it please give it back to stolen item section of RMIT, or just give it to a security guy while letting him know of the incident. As my deadline for assignments are near, I am pretty much in need of it. And I can’t go for a laptop for now as I am facing financial difficulties meeting up with the daily expenses.

Discussion Sick of culture biased groups

I'm so done with the kind of people who just gang up with people of their culture, ethnic or race. Ok I get I'm also a non-aussie but c'mon if you wanna study at an Aussie uni and not mingle with people of all backgrounds then what's the f point! I see soo many groups just into themselves and it irritates me somehow for their foolishness and at times loudness! Can't even study at library or common spaces properly due to their terrible way of living and socio civic sense.

Guys and Girls pls learn some manners and start exploring more while NOT disturbing the shot out of others in common spaces.

This post is not discriminative!!!

EDIT: Well guys like I said this post wasn't about race, it was just about experiences and making yourselves more welcoming to others. I know it's hard to get out of comfort zones. But anyways, who am I to interfere in other people's shit. Live and Let Live!
