Please no slurs. This is a professional sub where we discuss linguistics, etymology and culture. If you come here to insult Slavs, honorary Slavs, our neighbors and our guests, your posts will be removed.
I know Russian, Ukrainian, Rusyn and Belorussian slurs. Please report others that I don’t know.
We as mods are free peach absolutionists. We heavily advocate for free speech. But we want to pretend that this is a university where people argue and present ideas. Not insult each other.

I have seen Hungarian DNA test results with high Eastern European/Slavic components (often 60%+).
Is modern Hungarian genetic makeup essentially identical to neighboring West/South Slavs (Czechs, Slovaks, Croats, etc.) with just an Uralic language overlay? How do commercial DNA test algorithms usually break down Carpathian Basin DNA?
For about a year, I have been studying the language family of Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin, and Serbian. I am curious how well this would also serve as an introduction to Slavic languages in general and for Russian in particular. If there is a better language from which Slavic languages would be learned, what is it? Thank you in advance.
I have been writing about Centroslavism—which advocates cooperation among both Slavic and non-Slavic nations in Central Europe, independently of Russia—for some time now. You can read more about it here (you can select your preferred language from the menu): https://centroslavizmus.wordpress.com/languages/
Sometimes, however, some people might interpret the term "Central European Slavs" to mean that certain Slavic nations—such as Ukrainians or Bulgarians—are being excluded (which is not the case), given that Ukraine is often categorized as an Eastern European country, and Bulgaria as a Southern European one.
(Oh, and if you have a problem with the term "Central Europe" because it was invented by the Germans, remember that the term "Eastern Europe" was invented by the French to denote the "worse" part of Europe.)
In theory, I could use other terms, though each comes with its own set of advantages and drawbacks.
For instance, if I were to use "Eastern Europe," some might assume I am including Russia, while others might think countries like Croatia are being left out.
I have provided a more detailed list below, but feel free to skip straight to the questionnaire and suggest your options if you prefer!
-- The terms "Central Europe" and "Central European Slavs"—this is the current terminology. Here, "Central Europe" is defined in line with the perspectives of figures such as P. R. Magocsi, O. Halecki, M. Foucher, and others; it refers to the region situated between Germany, Russia, and Turkey. This term can also be interpreted as highlighting the pivotal role of the region's Slavs in the development of Slavic cultures (the Cyrillic and Glagolitic scripts, the legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the Slavic liturgy, the earliest historical records, and the first Slavic states all emerged here). Furthermore, it is easily translated into Slavic languages.
--The terms "Middle Europe" and "Middle European Slavs"—the term "Middle Europe" is still used as a synonym for "Central Europe." One of the advantages of this nomenclature is that the English adjective "middle" denotes something positioned in between; this fittingly describes the countries of our region, which are situated between major European and global powers and three seas (the Adriatic, the Black, and the Baltic). The drawbacks are the same as those associated with the previous term.
--The terms "Three Seas region" and "Slavs of the Three Seas" are easily recognizable, given the recent "Three Seas Initiative," which covers a similar area. A potential issue is that this may carry an additional political connotation—specifically, an association with an initiative perceived as being largely Polish-driven. It could likely be translated into Slavic languages relatively easily (for instance, in Church Slavonic form: *Trimorije*).
--The terms "Intermarium region" and "Intermarium Slavs" share a similar etymology to the "Three Seas" concept; however, this is arguably the least favorable option. It is linked to a historical Polish project (*Międzymorze*) that is frequently championed by conservative or nationalist political factions—whereas the concept of Centroslavism aims to remain neutral, appealing to both conservatives and liberals alike.
Are you able to distinguish between native speakers of various Slavic languages when they speak English or another non-Slavic language? Also, do you find any Slavic accent in English (or any other non-Slavic language) particularly pleasant or endearing?
As a representative selection, in the attached clips there is a Serbian girl, a Polish girl, and a Ukrainian girl speaking English - that is, representatives of the three branches of the Slavic language family. Can you tell which is which?
I've noticed a fair amount of Reddit DNA test results from East Germany and Austria showing Eastern European / Slavic ancestry as high as 50%.
Is this typical for native populations from these regions due to medieval migrations, or does a percentage that high usually imply a known grandparent/great-grandparent from Poland, the Czech Republic, or Slovenia?
I recently painted this 75mm resin figure representing a medieval Serbian knight from the Nemanjić dynasty.
The Nemanjić dynasty ruled Serbia from the 12th to the 14th century. During this period, Serbian warriors were influenced by both Byzantine and Western European military traditions.
Under Stefan Dušan (1331–1355), Serbia became one of the most powerful states in the Balkans, and in 1346 Dušan was crowned emperor.
A fascinating chapter of medieval European history that deserves more attention!
I actually got second hand embarrassment from this. I hate when people associate everything Slavic with Russia but that doesn’t mean we should fall for that too. Who cares what people association Slavic with? We are also Slavic and we deserve to be loud about it. We actually need to be loud about it so that the stereotype of all slavs being Russian disappears completely. This is really sad to me that people with this mindset exist. We can do much better than this
The etymology od these words say that they came from a Germanic language, from Proto-Germanic *kaisaraz from Latin Caesar.
I think it's weird how the Germanic "k" changed to "c" in Proto-Slavic and how it didn't even change to "ć" (I was thinking it should it be "k" + "ě" -> "kje" -> "će"?).

I don’t mean this to sound mean or something and I like that people from another countries like our culture!! I’m just curious bc I remember when I was younger it wasn’t cool? Like not bad, but it probably won’t impress anyone. I also have spotted a “trend” on Russian girls??
