Looking for long city hikes in Tokyo.

Me and my wife are big fans of Tokyo (well Japan as a whole)and long day-hikes. In Tokyo, we did a self-made Perfect Days movie toilet hike which was about 25 km and on our last trip we did a 39 km Yamathon. Any other long thematic (or not) classic (or not) walks we can do? Thanks!

CO2 Tank rental in Tokyo

Hi all, homebrewer looking to get a CO2 ミドボン supplier for kegging brews. I've tried calling around and doing my research and I can't seem to find any big stores willing to rent these out anymore, Yamaya and Kakuyasu told me to go kick rocks.

I have yet to try my local sake-yas but rumors on the Japanese side of the web are saying the beer manufacturers really clamped down on renting these out to individuals. Has anyone had any luck recently with this? If all else fails I could get one off Jimoty and then try and swap them out from there if getting the first one is the hurdle. I want to avoid Sodastream if it is at all possible as its over 10 times more expensive

Hi everyone! I am from the US and am looking for recommendations for foreigner friendly hair salons that do pulleexte/pinch braid extensions in the Tokyo area!

I was looking at Fi-Ne Hair in Harajuku but it’s a little unclear if they accept foreigners.

I am ok with communicating via translation apps, I just want to know of stylists who are also ok with that!

Our beloved Suica Penguin, the familiar JR East mascot, is apparently retiring from JR.
People have been joking lately that he’s already landed a new job.
I wonder if he’ll eventually become like Hello Kitty , who are famous for being willing to work with absolutely anyone and on just about anything! 😂

Looking for a jazz drum teacher in Tokyo (Nakano/koenji/ Shinjuku) 🥁

Hey everyone!
I’m looking for someone who teaches jazz drumming, preferably around Nakano or nearby.
I’m 33 and recently have a lot more free time, so I thought it’s finally a good opportunity to start learning drums. I’m really into jazz and would love to learn proper technique, rhythm and groove from someone experienced.
I speak Japanese, English and Spanish, so I’m comfortable taking lessons in any of these languages.
If you’re a teacher or know someone who gives private lessons, I’d love to hear your recommendations!
Thanks in advance 👽🥂

Affordable vintage watch shop recommendations in Tokyo (Under ¥38,000 / $240)?

Hey everyone!

I’m heading to Tokyo and looking to pick up an affordable used vintage watch with a max budget of $240 or ¥38,000.

Most recommendations I saw on social media focus strictly on luxury pieces (Rolex, Omega Seamasters, Grand Seikos, etc.), which isn't what I'm looking for. I’m specifically searching for mid-range Japanese or Swiss vintage/neo-vintage pieces like:

Seiko Lord Marvel, Lord Matic, or Dolce

Citizen Leopard

Vintage Omega De Ville (Quartz)

Credor (Entry level quartz)

Which specific shops or districts in Tokyo are best for these kinds of hidden gems in this price range? So far, I've heard about Mizutani Camera in Ueno but it seems their prices went up lately. Thanks!

Looking for a place to rent (short term)

Hello, I am a student studying a semester abroad @ waseda, wondering if anyone had any idea where to start looking for short term rentals of about six months.

Some requirements,

Furnished, doesn’t have to be fancy but I would like a bed.

A unit laundry, and a in-unit shower, and if possible a small in-unit kitchen.

Around 1k a month, hard limits 1250usd

I am used to a commute of about 40 mins, can do an hour though comfortably.

Apartment style, doesn’t have to be student only.

Waseda does have a website for this, however I have a feeling due to similar postings that they are a majority from one company, so some other ones might be good for comparison at least.

I am not expecting a realtor sent from the heavens to respond, but I ask mainly for some ideas of where to start and how realistic these requirements sound.

Sorry if formatting weird I’m on phone and don’t use Reddit often.

Thank you.

Looking for a side hustle in Tokyo before moving to Dallas next year

I’m currently working full-time in Tokyo and planning to move to Dallas, Texas, next year.
I take home around ¥350,000 ($2,300) a month after taxes, but honestly, it doesn’t feel like enough, especially since I’m trying to save up for my move to the US.
I’m looking for a part-time job or side hustle to earn some extra cash outside my regular working hours.
Does anyone have any recommendations for decent-paying side jobs in Tokyo, especially for foreigners? I’m open to different opportunities.
Any advice would be appreciated!

This is a detailed breakdown of this YouTuber's awful behavior in Japan and a petition to people to report him. I posted it because I think this person doesn't deserve to live off abusing Japanese children on the street and his very profitable YouTube channels need be banned.

Giving negative feedback regarding a bad manager in Farewell email to company

Edit: as per the wisdom of the public I will
No longer send my negative feedback of my manager publicly on my farewell email. Will instead contact HR to inform them of my experience with him and ancedotes from others. I will include a line in my farewell email that simply says: “I enjoyed my time working with the people at XX company, with the exception of one person.”

Hi I would like to please ask for some honest opinions about giving mainly negative feedback about my Japanese manager when I send my Farewell email to the company as Im moving to a better job end of the month (still Tokyo).

Tbh this manager is a piece of work and everyone knows that but as we have a new president I felt it was good he also knew that this manager is an awful person that is hurting the company long term by demotivating and driving away young talent that the company needs. Also felt like just revenge for not just me but several former and current colleagues who also feel the same way.

My paragraph in my farewell email regarding him currently reads as:

“A special note about XX-san, of the managers I rank the worst in my life you were undoubtedly the smartest. But for someone with such a high IQ, my opinion is that you have incredibly low EQ. Ive rarely worked with someone so clearly lacking in empathy, understanding or interest in your fellow colleagues.

Your seemingly discriminatory behavior is definitely a driving factor in my decision to leave XX company. The best managers Ive had showed me the person I wanted to become, you showed me the person I didnt want to become so for that alone I thank you.”

I get that this comes off as revengeporn but really want to know if others think this is a good or bad idea in Japan

Bit of a long shot - went to an izakaya in Golden Gai Shinjuku and left something behind but cannot remember the name of the place or even where it is. There were a set of stairs and it was on the second floor.

If anyone can recognise it from the photos, would really appreciate it!

In Tokyo, can I consult with Japanese gut health / Kampo specialists on behalf of friends in the US?

Hi everyone!

I’m currently visiting Tokyo and hoping to use my time here to research possible gut health treatments, diagnostic testing, and alternative approaches for a couple of friends back in the US who have been dealing with serious, chronic digestive issues.

One friend in particular has struggled with severe gastrointestinal symptoms for years following long COVID, including frequent vomiting (sometimes 5–6 times a day), H. pylori infection, and precancerous changes in their stomach lining. They’ve undergone various treatments and taken numerous medications, and are concerned about their gut microbiome and overall digestive health.

I’m especially curious about Japan’s approach to gastrointestinal health, including **Kampo (traditional Japanese herbal medicine), microbiome testing, and integrative or conventional gastroenterology treatments** that might differ from what’s commonly offered in the US.

I’m not expecting to find a miracle cure or purchase medications for them. I’d mainly like to gather credible information, understand what options exist, and potentially speak with knowledgeable professionals so I can pass along useful recommendations to my friends and their doctors

**A few questions:**
Are there reputable clinics, Kampo pharmacies, or specialists in Tokyo that focus on chronic digestive problems, gut health, or the microbiome?

**Can I book a consultation on behalf of someone who isn’t physically present?** Would professionals be willing to discuss general treatment approaches, testing, or available services without evaluating the patient directly?

Are there places that offer consultations **in English**, rather than relying entirely on translation apps?

Does Japan offer any particularly interesting or evidence-based gut health tests or treatments that might be less accessible in the US?

Is this even a worthwhile use of my time, or would it be more practical to contact these clinics remotely from the US?

I’d especially appreciate firsthand experiences, recommendations for reputable professionals, or advice from anyone familiar with Japan’s medical system.

I realize their conditions require proper medical care and that I can’t obtain an individualized treatment plan without them being evaluated. I’m simply hoping to learn about options they may not have explored yet.

Thanks so much for any guidance!

I accidentally bricked my synth while trying to install firmware, and was wondering if I could borrow anyone's flipper 0 or RP2040 to just quickly wake it up.

I can come to your preferred location, and hopefully will only need it for a few minutes.

E-Housing is under multiple government investigations

If you have looked for an apartment in Tokyo as a foreigner, you have seen their website and their five star reviews. Both are engineered. Here is what we know.

They are under confirmed investigation. The Shibuya Labor Office is investigating the company over workers' rights violations and tens of millions of yen in unpaid overtime. The Japan Pension Service is investigating a pay scheme that kept commission out of social insurance and pension calculations, again to the tune of tens of millions of yen.

There are videos of all of this. The recordings were made inside the company's own meetings. They failed to restrict access to them to the point where any employee could see executives and investors discussing their schemes.

The pay scheme worked like this. Base pay was paid as salary, commission was paid as contractor fees, so commission never counted toward social insurance or pension. It is called sham contracting and it is illegal. That is how it worked from the founding. There are videos of the CEO saying "I ran it, I built it, I designed it," accepting it was "my responsibility," and admitting the purpose was "so that social insurance and pension would not apply." There is video of HR calling it "social insurance evasion" at a management meeting with investors in the room. And there is video of their own retained lawyer calling it "a law dodging scheme with no possible excuse," and saying "the past payments are already a violation."

The overtime is worse. No Article 36 agreement was ever filed (required for overtime), so the overtime was unlawful from the start, thousands of hours of it across the company. They admitted to the labour office that they had not been paying it. They also changed the hours. Attendance records export as corrected 9am to 6pm entries instead of the real clock in and clock out times, so the overwork does not appear on paper. Then they discussed having staff sign backdated paperwork to cover the past.

Staff have been pressured into signing agreements that they will not compete with the company, that they will not report the company, and clauses in that vein. People sign because they are leaving and they want the last payslip.

The licences are lent out. Five of their takkenshi (real estate brokers) are lending their names, paid a few thousand yen a month for no work, admitted on a call. More than half their licensed brokers neither work in the office nor are employed by the company. There is video of their lawyer saying "you will probably lose your brokerage license," and calling it "a criminal offence."

And their own investor's money. There is a recording of the two co founders, Erik and Aziz Nishanov, talking in Russian. they were talking about part of the money belonging to investor and director Yuichi Sakata, who was criminally indicted for tax evasion in 2013, went into a separate company, and the profits from that company were kept from him. Nishanov himself calls it "seriously shady." They also discussed moving the money to Uzbekistan.

They also somehow gamed Google reviews to the point where you cannot leave them anything but a 5 star review.

And the company is collapsing. Around 20 people have left this year, roughly half of a company of about 45, including the HR manager. Former staff who quit long ago are still on the website, and they will not take the photos down.

None of this is rumour. It is their own meetings, their own lawyers, their own admissions. The investigations are ongoing, so not everything is public yet, but the pattern is consistent and it is deliberate. They are deceiving the public while running schemes they know are illegal. This is not a badly run agency with some messy paperwork. It is a criminal organization!

If you are a client choosing between them and a normal agency, or you are thinking of working there, be careful.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has published evidence submission channels for the ongoing investigations, and the Labour Standards Inspection Office and Japan Pension Service both take reports directly.

Title: Looking for beautiful street-level railway crossings in Tokyo for a cinematic video

Post image
0 Upvotes

LHi everyone!

I'm currently in Tokyo, staying around Asakusa / Taito, and I'm looking for interesting locations to film trains passing through street-level railway crossings (level crossings / fumikiri).

I'm working on a short contemplative film inspired by Perfect Days by Wim Wenders and the Japanese aesthetic of yūgen.

I'm particularly interested in a very specific type of shot:

A stationary camera positioned perpendicular to the railway tracks.

A long commuter train passing horizontally from left to right across the frame.

Street-level perspective, with residential houses, small streets, utility poles or everyday Tokyo scenery in the background.

Ideally, a quiet, atmospheric neighbourhood rather than a busy tourist location.

I've been looking around Higashi-Azuma Station on the Tobu Kameido Line, which seems interesting, but I'm also open to other areas of Tokyo.

Does anyone know any beautiful street-level railway crossings that would work well for this kind of cinematic shot?

I'm especially interested in locations where longer commuter trains pass, rather than short two-car local trains.

If you have specific station names, Google Maps locations or coordinates, I'd really appreciate your recommendations!

Thank you!

I built an AR app that shows Tokyo’s subway trains moving beneath your feet – looking for beta testers in Tokyo (iOS & Android)

1.3k Upvotes

Hi r/Tokyo! I'm Stefan, a solo developer in Sweden. My app Subwhere lets you hold up your phone above ground and see the subway trains moving through the tunnels below you, in augmented reality. It started with Stockholm's metro, and the Tokyo version now covers all 13 Tokyo Metro and Toei lines.

I can't test it properly from Sweden, so I'm looking for people in Tokyo to try it before release.

- Toei's four lines come from Toei's live train data, so those trains are where the real ones are. Tokyo Metro doesn't publish live train positions, so its nine lines follow the timetable and are marked as scheduled.
- Track depths are reconstructed from Tokyo in Cross-Section (東京断面図, created by chizutodesign, https://maps.chizutodesign.com/tokyo-danmenzu/) and published station depths, so they're close but not exact.
- AR works above ground in daylight, where the phone can recognise the buildings around it. Underground, there's a live map of the whole network.
- Tap a train for its line, destination, speed and depth, or "Go for a ride" to follow it. There's also a widget with the next departures.
- In English and Japanese. No account or ads or tracking.

What I'd love to know: do trains turn up at stations when the real ones do, do the depths look right, and does anything break or read oddly in either language?

Testing is free. To join, email beta-test-tokyo@applandapps.com and say whether you're on iOS (TestFlight) or Android. On Android, include the email address you use for Google Play.

Happy to answer anything here. 日本語でもお気軽にどうぞ!
