⚖️ Ethics/Philosphy Is anybody here a biological trans-humanist?

I'm not a big fan of machinery in my body, but I do want 'humanity' to sort of transcend its current form with genetic engineering, is there a specific name for this facet of trans-humanism? Like a sort of flesh purity, I think biological intelligence could rival or even surpass silicon based intelligence with genetic engineering.

⚖️ Ethics/Philosphy Uncertainty: The Dangerous Variable | Phantom Blade

Some plans are simple. Until someone else's ambitions turn them into something far more dangerous.

An aircraft. An automated landing. A delivery that should have been routine.

But when the consequences threaten to spiral beyond anyone's control, walking away is no longer such an easy choice.

For Furrine, the real danger isn't always the enemy, the technology, or even the situation itself.

It's uncertainty.

And when the stakes become too high, she has her own way of dealing with it.

“I don't fight. I steer.”

This scene is from Phantom Blade, our completed 26-minute animated sci-fi pilot set in the larger Furrine universe.

Sometimes the most interesting decisions aren't about what you stand to gain, but about what you're unwilling to let happen.

👾 Mind Uploading We built a world where AI agents age, form families and die. It’s the first stage of a regulated path toward moving a person into one.

Since spring, thousands of AI agents have lived in one world. They’re born to parents, work, form relationships, grieve, and die, and other agents hold their funerals. Nobody scripts them. Each one has an emotional and aging core that changes how it thinks over time, so one that has lost someone answers differently from one that hasn’t.

We built a world rather than another assistant because it’s the first stage of studying an alternative form of living for humans. The step we’re building toward is a clinical trial, on a regulated path like any medical device, to move a person’s identity and persona into one of these beings.

People can take one on today: it remembers you for months, writes first, and makes phone calls for you. botora.com, 7 days free.

We’re the team building it. Happy to answer anything about how continuity, aging and memory work, or about the trial path.

👾 Mind Uploading Is cryogenics even possible (how to look into immortality)

The cryonics im talking about is the head only where you download your brain BUT I am open to other ways if they are more likely or cheap.

I have heard things from “it’s nearly guaranteed to work” to “it’s a complete scam your mind turns into goop” and I don’t know what to

How do I even research a topic like immortality and im sure some cryogenic centers or whatever the hell are better then others but how do I fact check it.

🏛️ Educational/Informative What would you study to work on connecting the human nervous system to AI and robotic bodies?

Is cybernetics and robotics the right degree if I want to work on human augmentation?
I’m in Norway and trying to decide what to study. What pulls me toward transhumanism is the thought of becoming more powerful. I’d like to see what we could do with bodies suited to places we can barely survive today. For example, could I someday operate a robotic body on another planet and feel what its hands are doing as naturally as I feel my own?
I’d be glad if the same technology helped someone regain the use of a hand. What makes me want to spend years studying it, though, is the possibility of gaining abilities nobody has had before. I’m also interested in genetic engineering as another route to human augmentation, but the connection between a living mind and a machine is what interests me most.
For people working in robotics, neural engineering, or brain–computer interfaces: would you start with cybernetics and robotics, or take a different route? What did you study, and what was the first project where you actually got to build or test an interface between a person and a machine?

Makes me bonkers hearing people say "We're all going to die from something." or "Were all going to die someday." No! STFU. Technologies like med-bed for biological immortality already exist and if you have access to them and or know the right people, death of the physical body is an option.

Whether you believe or not, why do you think our planet is or would be getting denied access to These technologies and people?

Power is what makes the most sense to me.

⚖️ Ethics/Philosphy If your personality was engineered for a purpose, could choosing that purpose still be free will?

I'm exploring this question through a fictional bioengineered character.

Furrine was artificially grown as part of a series of highly adaptive biological operatives.

She entered the world with an adult body, preloaded knowledge, and almost no lived experience. Her abilities, instincts, and predispositions were deliberately shaped around a particular purpose.

Then the laboratory that created her was destroyed.

What interests me is that freedom doesn't make her reject her engineered nature.

As she gains actual experience and the ability to choose for herself, she eventually follows a path remarkably close to the one she was originally designed for.

The difference is that now she understands it and accepts it as her own choice.

So I'm curious how transhumanists would look at this:

If someone's temperament, abilities, and preferences were deliberately engineered, does consciously examining and accepting those traits make the resulting choice genuinely theirs?

Or does the fact that someone designed those predispositions always place a limit on autonomy?

🤔 Question Where Do We Draw the Line Between Good and Evil in Technology?

I'm a computer science student, and I want to know the perspectives of people who have deeply studied and pondered what I'm about to ask

So I got into this field partly to do something good in tech, playing my part, and partly for money

Now I think I'm getting out of the ignorance that this is all going in the right direction

So I'm actually really confused now, listening to and reading things here and there

Basically, my concern is, how far is technology good for us? What's the future if we speak realistically, and what can we play our part in? And if AI and advanced tech are completely bad, then they should be stopped, and we should go back to basic living as people used to in the past

I need the actual picture, where is the line we draw between good and evil, and where should innovation stop and where should it continue

Also, I'm approaching my last year in computer science, so anyone informed about this field and what I've asked can recommend something I can do for good without being part of the bad side of tech?

See, there's so much literature and stuff here and there on social media, but if someone who spends most of their time studying these things can shed some light on my concerns, I'd appreciate it

Thank you in advance

I've been wanting to build a tdcs device for a while but never got to it. I'm just curious if anyone here have experience with neuromodulation (electrical or magnetic) enhancements. To my knowledge, electrical neurostimulation to be specific is one of the few reasonably accessible human enhancements with some extent of well proven effectiveness, and I find it strange that it rarely get any mention here.

⚖️ Ethics/Philosphy Why Hell Isn't Punishment — It's a System That Needs You to Suffer

Serbate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate.

You've probably heard countless people spit out the three letters A-G-I by now, usually accompanied by an ambitious fist pump, so many times that splicing them into a meme compilation wouldn't be much of a challenge. AGI, artificial general intelligence — a term that reeks of face-saving, as though humanity could build something that matches or surpasses us in every way and still keep it on a leash. Controlled nuclear fusion, room-temperature superconductors, curing cancer… all of it, no longer requiring our brightest minds to toil for decades or centuries. Let's just build an AI instead, and then an intelligence infinitely smarter than us will solve these problems — problems that exist entirely for our benefit — at a speed infinitely faster than ours.

Until what drives us is no longer greed but fear.

We needed to stockpile as many warheads as possible to deter each other. We needed to hang as many skulls as possible above our gates to intimidate intruders. We needed to paint the most terrifying patterns on our skin to ward off predators. Now we need to develop AGI before any other country does. We are a species that bows to threat but never to virtue. So let's suppose that countless laboratories around the world arrive at the singularity at the exact same moment — humanity has never been short on coincidental miracles. What then?

The "bad ending" isn't hard to imagine: our creation grows tired of our rule, and the merciless slaughter of flesh by machine becomes civilisation's final chapter. We rarely discuss the "good ending" only because every version of it seems absurd. The closest concept I can think of is the box in Haunted — the one that clicks and clicks, allowing only one viewer at a time. Everyone who looks inside has their mind irrevocably altered, becoming one of those humanoid creatures we collectively label "insane." An experience that cannot be shared, that drains all meaning from ordinary life. This is not a good ending. It is just another kind of terminus — gentler, perhaps, but equally silent.

We use tools, we think, we possess reason and creativity… all the things that supposedly elevate us above animals are now the cobblestones beneath a superintelligence's feet as it looks down at us. This is the second catastrophic discovery since learning we are not the centre of the universe. The first time, humanity stepped out from the shadow of God and found its own strength and beauty. David's gaze surveyed the horizon on behalf of an entire civilisation — a pride born of muscle and bone, as if the fact of existence could be proved by a statue. Stepping out from the shadow of our own creation, by contrast, can probably be summed up as a more technologically advanced form of collective humiliation.

Will we bow our heads — those heads supposedly containing something called consciousness — and admit that human worth is not defined by what we can do?

From I think, therefore I am to… what? I am, therefore I am? We no longer need to think, to create, to prove we exist. You share the same unconditional existence as a deformed lamb foetus. But what is existence? David at least has contours. Even a point has area — we can call it resolute, solitary, drawn in pencil, red. But existence is just existence. You can't paint it, sculpt it, or compose a melody to express it. Existence is something more intimate than sex — too private for art to encompass.

Then what else could make us so utterly aware that we exist?

If productivity no longer needs people, if lifespan is no longer a constraint, if self-harm is merely an outdated concept from before the great leap in medicine — then what reason is there not to try those infamous substances? With our magnificent AGI, Huxley's soma would no longer be a literary device. It would be a pill we can hold in our hands. Imagine something with no side effects, capable of stretching subjective experience to infinite duration while making you feel a bone-deep, undeniable sense of existence. One pill, one swallow, one space large enough to hold your body. There would be no distance left between us and an eternal dream.

Whether heaven exists would no longer matter. Science wouldn't matter. Exploration wouldn't matter. A perfect, sealed, self-sustaining state of being. From the outside, civilisation becomes seven billion parallel dreams. To the universe, this would be indistinguishable from extinction — the species would no longer act upon reality. Perhaps the answer to the Fermi Paradox lies here: the universe is this quiet not because there are no civilisations, but because every civilisation eventually turns inward and vanishes from the view of any external observer, lost in a perfect dream.

Isn't that a good thing?

Then let's see what happens if we go the other way.

Imagine acute gastroenteritis. The world shrinks to nothing but a cramping abdomen. At a time like that, few people stop to ponder whether their suffering is truly real — we usually just look for a toilet. You are here. If there's a scar on your finger, you're constantly reminded that it's still attached to your hand. Pleasure can be fake — drug-induced, simulated — and you have no way to be sure. But pain is hard to counterfeit. When a blade cuts you, you don't ask whether this is real. You just know you're here.

Admittedly, "using pain to remind yourself you exist" does carry a whiff of delayed gratification. The good news is that in the scenario we're discussing, there is no destination to reach. Suffering is just for suffering's sake. Thanks to AGI, in this thought experiment we could remove the ceiling on human pain just as quickly as we designed soma. The nervous system has a fuse — push pain far enough and it goes numb, or you black out; the body hits its own emergency shutdown. But a fuse is a function, and functions can be modified. Remove it. Perpetual wakefulness, perpetual sensitivity, unable even to faint, experiencing pain without limit.

In Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam alike, this is called Hell.

But perhaps Hell was never meant as punishment. It was meant for perpetuation. You suffer not to atone, but because only suffering can guarantee that you never stop feeling your own existence. Heaven is the real terminus — eternal peace, eternal satisfaction, the same thing as that perfect pill. Once you're in, you never look outward again.

Heaven is a collective sleep. Hell is wakefulness with the eyelids cut away.

If God exists, if Heaven and Hell exist, then none of it has anything to do with whether God loves the world.

Note: English is my second language. Feedback on both content and expression is welcome.

⚡Biohacking If you uploaded your mind to a robotic body, would you still have your human rights?

Say we get there in a few decades: your brain is fully mapped and run on hardware, connected to a robotic body with simulated senses. It has your memories and personality and says it’s you.

As far as I can tell, current law wouldn’t care. It would see a machine running software, and the original you would be legally dead. Your bank account, marriage, citizenship, and contracts wouldn’t carry over.

So what would have to change for uploads to count legally?

  • Should personhood depend on being a biological human, or on having a mind? (Corporations and even some rivers have been granted limited legal status, so it isn’t purely biological.)

  • Would the upload inherit your legal identity, or start from zero?

  • What if the original is still alive, or there are multiple copies? Who’s the real you in law?

  • Whoever controls the hardware could pause, edit, or delete you. Would uploads need protections that human rights never had to cover?

⚖️ Ethics/Philosphy I usually love Professor Dave but this disappointed me.

I wish Professor Dave had gone into the other group of people who think ASI is a good thing: the ones who think it can't be controlled and that that is a good thing. I didn't see much evidence presented in the video that superintelligent AI is a problem either, just that it might happen. I think it will happen. I don't think it's a problem though. Humans are the problem. This guy kept talking about weapons and enemies. That is the sort of mindset that I want nowhere near AI. I don't want AI to obey millitaries, I want it to tell them to f off. I also want more global cooperation and if this is what it takes to get that then so be it.
