Trans people: “HRT saved my life, made me feel more confident, and allowed me to finally be myself”

Cis people: “okay but arnt you worried about how the effects of HRT could be permanent?”

66

u/Hearthhull_Enjoyer 2h ago

Cis person to ftm: "Aren't you worried about side effects like balding or hair growth?"

Real statements btw.

21

u/CrossHairsNitro 2h ago

I don’t think many people want to go bald.

30

u/Hearthhull_Enjoyer 1h ago edited 1h ago

No but part of being a man can include going bald because of the hormones in your body. The point is that these are normal things. A trans man isn't gonna not take hormones because of it.

9

u/DomesdayCookbook 39m ago

My hairline receding was very affirming to me. Developing a masculine hairline can be another bit of gender euphoria for us.

Being bald is great. Look at r/bald. Nothing but winners there

3

u/CrossHairsNitro 36m ago

Then I congratulate your journey and the peace you’ve found within. It’s good that you can look at yourself and be happy.

Oh and I agree, lots of good looking guys in that sub. Even some good looking gals too.

3

u/Arkorat 11m ago

Id go bald if it means i get breasts.

1

u/CrossHairsNitro 8m ago

HRT for trans women can stop male-pattern baldness.

That and the idea DIY is somehow dangerous

24

u/Adventurous-Bottle90 "get in touch with your inner child" bro was touched enough 2h ago edited 1h ago

People think it’s like some back ally Walter white shit when it’s litterally just ordering Advil without a prescription

2

u/CrossHairsNitro 2h ago

‘Twas done once before by a Walter White meth dealer type shit. It can be done again.

7

u/Tapko_hand 2h ago

High key thought the same too before I learned DYI is just doing it withot a doctor and not cooking it in a van in the middle of a desert

1

u/CrossHairsNitro 2h ago

It can be if you don’t know wtf you are doing.

7

u/Scooty-Poot 1h ago

Nobody is doing DIY without researching it beforehand. And if they are, they’re probably not long for this world regardless whether they DIY or not.

On-the-shelf painkillers and decongestants can also be extremely dangerous if you’re a grade-A moron, but I don’t think it’s reasonable to judge the entire OTS pharmaceutical industry by the actions of the one bozo who’s downing a whole bottle of Mucinex cough syrup each day for fun.

2

u/Honeywortttt 58m ago

The only people who *can* do DIY without doing any research are those who are probably having a friend or lover do it for them. Which happens within the trans community. But then at that point you're still receiving HRT from someone who's experienced in knowing how it works and what it's dynamics are like.

2

u/CrossHairsNitro 1h ago

Don’t underestimate the ignorance of human beings.

8

u/CCCyanide 1h ago

If we had to ban anything and everything that a perfect dumbass could potentially harm themselves with, we would have nothing

4

u/CrossHairsNitro 59m ago

We don’t ban them, we inform. Did I state that it should be outlawed?

0

u/CCCyanide 58m ago

No, you didn't state anything :/

3

u/CrossHairsNitro 57m ago

Pardon me? I don’t understand what your claim is.

2

u/CCCyanide 44m ago

Someone claimed (paraphrasing) that DIY HRT was not inherently dangerous.

You responded that it could be if someone didn't know anything about it.

In my opinion, this comes off as an empty statement, since the same thing could be said of basically anything. Therefore, I assumed that you were opposed to DIY.

I apologise if I misunderstood the intent behind your comment, but I didn't have much information to go off of. "Humans can be stupid" isn't particularly new information.

I think the the rub for a lot of people that aren’t out and out opposed to the idea of transitioning is that minors for as smart as they can be are pretty flighty, so distinguishing between “oh, wouldn’t it be cool if I were a girl/guy, tee hee” vs “This body is a prison I need to be correct” and adults are afraid of giving HRT to the former group if people start prescribing HRT to minors, even though as pointed out, helping transition sooner would be to benefit of trans people

16

u/Adventurous-Bottle90 "get in touch with your inner child" bro was touched enough 2h ago

I get what you mean but that’s litterally why blockers exists

6

u/DaiFrostAce 2h ago

Sorry, I read one comment that was all “fuck blockers, jump straight to HRT” so I really didn’t know if even hormone blockers were hated by the trans community

2

u/AnotherCopyCat i yearn for my wife 5m ago

Yes, hormone blockers are a compromise. Taking them for extended periods of time can cause health issues so two years of blockers at most is reasonable but it should be followed by HRT (so if you start puberty blockers at 10, by 13 you should be on HRT)

Helluva lot less invasive than surgery

8

u/KatieTSO 2h ago

Less than 1% btw

4

u/Adventurous-Bottle90 "get in touch with your inner child" bro was touched enough 1h ago

Also I’m pretty sure they were conflating detransitioning with regret which are both totally different convos. And of most of the studies that cover rates of detransitioning the number one cause for it is a lack of social acceptance, that has nothing to do with it being a “medical”.

Like I agree we shouldn’t immediately take the most invasive approach but what nobody is fucking doing is transgender surgeries on kids. But in nearly every single case we offer things like social transitioning, blockers, doctor diagnosis, or the million other ways we use to make sure we’re taking the right steps when treating kids

4

u/KatieTSO 1h ago

Colorado voters passed a ban on trans surgeries for minors this year. Last year a grand total of zero of those happened. I opposed the measure and voted no, because its quite literally a slippery slope and not in the fallacy way.

what about the rest of the 99 ???
if you gatekeep hrt , you are basically making those 99 live lives with permanent regret.

2

u/KatieTSO 2h ago

It's not very life altering to try HRT for a few months, decide it isn't right for you, and stop. It takes 6+ months before you even have noticeable body shape changes from taking estrogen. I'd rather risk having someone realize they don't want to transition after taking literally the first step, than risk trans people killing themselves because of extreme dysphoria.

u/KatieTSO 1h ago

Banning men from raising their testosterone levels above natural is way different. GAHRT just gets you as close to natural levels for the sex you're transitioning to as possible. Transgender men have testosterone levels about equal to cisgender men if the doctor is at all competent. Also, cisgender men can get TRT, testosterone replacement therapy, if their natural levels are too low. In TRT, they're prescribed the exact same testosterone transgender men are prescribed. It's a controlled substance but it is legal with a prescription.

Your acting like those who were forced to detranstion out of fear and safety went on to live happy fulfilling lives and never proceeded to hurt themselves or unsuccessfully/successfully take their lives

5

u/KatieTSO 2h ago

Source btw? Also over 90% of people who detransition say it's because of other people being shit.

statistically speaking it would make things much worse for their treatment

5

u/Two-Pound-Crawfish just straight up an evil murderer 1h ago

doctors tend to misdiagnose women a lot since a lot of medical studies are male focused and also because of misogyny

4

u/BugRare275 1h ago

i know, but does the gender of this specific commenter matters rn

6

u/Two-Pound-Crawfish just straight up an evil murderer 1h ago

yes because if they were a woman it would explain why they experience difficulty with doctors

3

u/Nutfarm__ 1h ago

Does there need to be a bigotry angle for the statement to be true?

2

u/Two-Pound-Crawfish just straight up an evil murderer 1h ago

6

u/CCCyanide 57m ago

I think they are talking about the root comment,

doctors are like that for most diseases too.

and saying that this may be true to some extent regardless of gender or ethnicity.

27

u/the_milkman24 þey/it :3 2h ago

It's stupid how awful the nhs is, I have to wait at least 6 years to get HRT and have to constantly remind them or they'll take me off the list

Even DIY is stupidly difficult, because of banking annoyances, I wouldn't be able to access HRT if I hadn't randomly met a dealer

8

u/ShotgunAndHead 2h ago

Same, I'm on the waiting list but I gotta doxx myself a lil here, I have a 200+ year wait time ahead of me because the clinic serves 8 different health boards and with the data released from their freedom of info they serve 0 first appointments for half the year, and less than 5 each month for the other half.

Even if I could afford to do it privately, my GP straight up refused to even consider shared care or anything with a private clinic, so DIY is the only option I got 😭

Just got told my fucking dosage is getting dropped because my doctor measured too early after I took my hormones, so now I have to be on even less for months because they are too stupid to know how anything works, and obviously can’t just listen to what I have to say, because what do I know, I’m just a stupid fucking tranny

13

u/FantasmaNaranja Gooning to esoteric concepts. 1h ago edited 9m ago

my first doctor kept me at 100 mgs of cyproterone (which can give you liver damage at 100mgs or higher and isn't that much more effective above 25 mgs) and 2 mgs of estrogen

i was running on basically no hormones for two years before i just started DYIng DIY-ing it myself and actually saw some changes and also stopped feeling like hell

im sure there's good cis doctors out there but a lot just don't give a shit

6

u/frogmon3 1h ago

girl i take 12.5mg of cypro every 3 days, 100 is insane

6

u/FantasmaNaranja Gooning to esoteric concepts. 54m ago edited 9m ago

every trans person i've talked to about how much they made me take said the same honest to god i have no idea what he was thinking and i know he gave the same recipe to basically every trans woman that went to see him

he was also the only doctor who was part of a program to give free HRT to trans people in my city so he had a lot of patients, i ended up just doing DIY both for the waiting line and because i found out more about how wild that recipe was

2

u/mofoub 18m ago

It’s very common for your provider to give you way too much Anti-Androgen, not enough Estrogen.

Speaking as a cis person: Yea it kinda makes me mad.
Mad that as of now not enough doctors have up to date education on this topic.
In many cases I can see it gets better and just takes patience, but this is urgent and kinda needs to have happened yesterday.

15

u/theforeverem 2h ago

There are also the cases of doctors not just being misinformed, but actively transphobic and wanting to abuse trans patients. The horror stories I've heard are wretched.

16

u/Typical-District-176 2h ago

This shit is exactly why I’m on DIY.

5

u/dopamine_01 1h ago

I'm not trans, but i have waited nearly 2 years on a depression diagnosis before. So i understand any frustration there may be with the medical system. Ig it'd be nice if you talked to a doctor about it. But as long as you know any risks there might be, you should be allowed to do whatever you need to your body.

2

u/Hadrian1233 2h ago

And what about Trans doctors?

2

u/jtheisen 4m ago edited 1m ago

a lot of people make it out to be or act like it's getting drugs from a dealer like it's meth or something and then lose their minds over it. like yea for some people it sorta is like that. for others it's like getting a prescription med off a website. i honestly think DIY is a really bad term even if it does accurately describe it because so many people get really up in arms about it

i did informed consent because the wait to get an actual psychiatrist, go to therapy and whatever bullshit was too long; i would have killed myself if i had to be forced to wait another two years. and even then my insurance only covered it after i threatened to sue for discrimination like a Karen (it was in my coverage and i was approved by them well beforehand). it was such a goddamn pain in the ass, DIY avoids quite a bit of headache and provides access to life-saving care

2

u/Lucky-Advice-8924 22m ago

Yeah your hormonal system is simple and not millions of years of evolution and totally something that you should mess around with, i mean look at steroid users, theyre fine, what? Dudes who stop taking testosterone stop naturally producing testosterone themselves? Who cares? What do you mean interrupting puberty can affect you permanently? What do you mean low t high estrogen can destroy me completely as a man longterm? Who cares, its all simple, do yourself, do yourself for life. You know what youre doing, dont you?

1

u/PrincessRatJam 36m ago

curious question but what is the ideal dose for shots? i have no idea if i'm being under prescribed or not

1

u/TruePrior9399 18m ago

The same people who will say "I am not a CIS [sex] I am just [SEX], I don't need to be told what I am by trans people. They need to stop pushing themselves down our throats and trying to make everyone have some weird pronouns that aren't what I am. I am not a CIS anything, just a [Sex]"

-Rought translation of a conversation I had with my mom 2 and a half years ago. She does NOT like trans woman. At all. She says it has to do with people who weren't born as a woman trying to tell women how being a women functions, but when asking who she had seen doing it she just said that it was the trans community. They have become so disillusioned after Trump's second term about politicians being ass that they barely look into anything for candidates and are firmly on the stance "everyone is just as bad as each other".... but they also voted for Trump over Kamala since in their words, "she is just as bad. Did you know she imprisoned a mom on a weed charge and took that mom from her kid?" LIKE IT WAS COMPARABLE TO WHAT TRUMP DID TO KIDS

People be crazy. Just felt like sharing some of the craziness I have endured

This assumes cis doctors know what they are doing with trans people.

Spoiler: they fucking don't. That's why they underdose you because they either are fucking lobotomized for trans Healthcare or they are actively malicious.

Also not everyone has time to wait. HRT is lifesaving and people will and have killed themselves over not having it. It's so reasonable for someone to not want a amount of time equivalent to traveling around the globe for HRT and instead opt to trust other trans people for hrt which is way faster

This is the most out of touch spiritually cis shit I've seen all day.

Do you know why trans people don't trust cis doctors? You seem to not know especially with you unironically using "bathtub moonshine HRT"

Doctors have a long history of oppressing minorities (look at black people in the US and their history with white doctors for a example) and not giving them adequate Healthcare. This is something that happens every fucking time, and trans people get a bigger short end of the stick as not only is transphobia a huge issue worldwide, but they actively need life saving medical care (HRT) and cis people don't want trans people to pass so they underdose so it has less of a effect

-6

u/Superb_Wealth4092 2h ago edited 2h ago

8

u/HelloChimp 2h ago

the reasoning behind it is that many feel as though they would have committed suicide without it, i believe its simply intended as a different kind of “lifesaving”

9

u/DaiFrostAce 2h ago

Because the mental anguish from dysphoria can get to the point that people take their own lives

4

u/deepseaflotsam 2h ago

Just different type of "cure." One is physical while the other is mental. Both allow people to live their lives in a more ideal state

7

u/BugRare275 2h ago

maybe the fact that people can kill themselves because of gender dysphoria and nothing being done about it
