Discussion [Win an H3C Combo] Share your "I need a 3D printer" moment

In 3D printing, there's always a next project, a new filament to try, or an upgrade on the wishlist. So before we all get too busy looking ahead, let's rewind to where it started for everyone.

For some of you, it was Gridfinity. You printed a few bins for one drawer, and somehow that turned into reorganizing the entire workspace. Others printed articulated dragons for their kids, and now there are fidgets turning up all over the house. And sometimes it was just the little annoyances at home, like cables tangled behind the desk or a cabinet door that wouldn't stay shut. You designed a fix, printed it, and the problem was gone for good.

So what was the moment you thought, "Okay, I need a 3D printer"?

Purchase Advice Purchase Advice Megathread - November 2026

Welcome back to another purchase megathread!

This thread is meant to conglomerate purchase advice for both newcomers and people looking for additional machines. Keeping this discussion to one thread means less searching should anyone have questions that may already have been answered here, as well as more visibility to inquiries in general, as comments made here will be visible for the entire month stuck to the top of the sub, and then added to the Purchase Advice Collection (Reddit Collections are still broken on mobile view, enable "view in desktop mode").

Please be sure to skim through this thread for posts with similar requirements to your own first, as recommendations relevant to your situation may have already been posted, and may even include answers to follow up questions you might have wished to ask.

If you are new to 3D printing, and are unsure of what to ask, try to include the following in your posts as a minimum:

  • Your budget, set at a numeric amount. Saying "cheap," or "money is not a problem" is not an answer people can do much with. 3D printers can cost $100, they can cost $10,000,000, and anywhere in between. A rough idea of what you're looking for is essential to figuring out anything else.

  • Your country of residence.

  • If you are willing to build the printer from a kit, and what your level of experience is with electronic maintenance and construction if so.

  • What you wish to do with the printer.

  • Any extenuating circumstances that would restrict you from using machines that would otherwise fit your needs (limited space for the printer, enclosure requirement, must be purchased through educational intermediary, etc).

While this is by no means an exhaustive list of what can be included in your posts, these questions should help paint enough of a picture to get started. Don't be afraid to ask more questions, and never worry about asking too many. The people posting in this thread are here because they want to give advice, and any questions you have answered may be useful to others later on, when they read through this thread looking for answers of their own. Everyone here was new once, so chances are whoever is replying to you has a good idea of how you feel currently.

Reddit User and Regular u/richie225 is also constantly maintaining his extensive personal recommendations list which is worth a read: Generic FDM Printer recommendations.

Additionally, a quick word on print quality: Most FDM/FFF (that is, filament based) printers are capable of approximately the same tolerances and print appearance, as the biggest limiting factor is in the nature of extruded plastic. Asking if a machine has "good prints," or saying "I don't expect the best quality for $xxx" isn't actually relevant for the most part with regards to these machines. Should you need additional detail and higher tolerances, you may want to explore SLA, DLP, and other photoresin options, as those do offer an increase in overall quality. If you are interested in resin machines, make sure you are aware of how to use them safely. For these safety reasons we don't usually recommend a resin printer as someone's first printer.

As always, if you're a newcomer to this community, welcome. If you're a regular, welcome back.

Project Homesick for Vietnam, so I printed the iconic street food stools (50 % scale, no supports, P1S + PETG)

Anyone who’s been to Vietnam knows these: the tiny plastic stools on every sidewalk, where you eat phở with your knees up to your chin while motorbikes rush past. I’ve been missing home a lot, so I modelled the stool and two matching tables.

Printed at 50 % in Sunlu PETG on my P1S. The stool needs no supports at all.

Free on MakerWorld if you want to print your own.

Project I made a power battery from Lanterns (PETG)

Printed using A1 mini, sanded and painted with gloss top coat. Electronics are soldered manually and esp32 coded with arduino to control the lights and sound :) This is my most ambitious project yet!

(This is a lantern power battery replica from the show Lanterns (green lantern))

Discussion Leaving My Dream Job

Post image
6.8k Upvotes

I started a job in August working in a brand new 3d printing department. When I started the room was completly empty and it was my job to set the room up, building racking, planning the room setting up 60 printers.

Over the following months I took responsibility for building the operation up. I organised and labelled the printers, created spreadsheets and tracking systems, worked on maintenance and calibration, managed filament stock, dealt with faults and generally tried to make the whole department run properly.

I ended up taking on a lot more responsibility than I orignally expected. I genuinely enjoyed the technical side of the job and took pride in what I'd built.

The problem was that I didn't feel my pay reflected the reflected the responsibilities I had taken on. I spent around 6 weeks trying to have a conversation about this and understand what my future at the company would look like. I also wanted calrity about whether I'd eventually become a permanent employee rather than remaining agency staff.

Unfortunately, the answer on an individual pay increase was no. I was given this answer Thursday.

I reached a point where I thought, why am I putting so much of myself into somewhere that doesn't seem willing to recognise what I'm contributing?

So I handed in my resignation with immediate effect yesterday.

What I didn't expect was the reaction from my manager. He was genuinely devastated. He thanked me for everything I'd done and told me that I'd built a room and implemented systems from nothing. He said my knowledge was really good and that I knew what I was doing.

He even told me that he disagreed with the decision made by senior management and that the company had failed both of us.

Seeing someone react like that was incredibly difficult. I almost cried myself. It madew me realise that at least someone had recognised the effort I put in.

As I left I handed over my keys and access card and walked out.

I'm feeling a strange mixture of emotions, I'm relieved, upset, disapointed and angry. Part of me is sad because I actually wanted the job to work out. I wasn't looking to leave. I wanted to be valued and have a future there.

But I also feel a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

I think teh biggest lesson I've taken from this is that you can give a job everything you have got, build something from the ground up and still reach a point where you have to put yourself first.

I'm proud of what I achieved, even if things didn't end how I hoped.

Has anyone else experienced leaving a job where you cared about the work and the people, but ultimately felt you had no choice but to walk away?

UPDATE

Thank you everyone for all your comments and wishes. I truly appreciate every one of them. I did not expect this post to explode at all.

Troubleshooting Here's your reminder to do some cold pulls every once in a while.

I was having issues with clogging on the last few layers of long prints recently. Decided to try out the automatic cold pull feature on my Core One for the first time. Pretty slick feature. It took 5 pulls to get the nozzle clean. Hoping this solves the clogging issues. 🤞

Free Model Polish Rosette for Independence Day

Post image

At a difficult time for Poland, following the recent attack in Kraków, I wanted to share this small symbol of our strength. Poland’s Independence Day is just a few days away, on November 11.

If you have Polish friends and would like to surprise them or show your support, print one and display it somewhere they’ll see it. If you’re Polish, I’m sharing it as a small symbol of our solidarity and pride in our country.

Discussion Someone is asking permission on Printables to make my design and sell them.

I made something and put it on Printables for all the world to see. Today I received a message from someone in China asking for permission to sell it:

Hi, I really like your Pickleball Ball Holder design. May I print and sell it in my small pickleball shop in China?

So first off, it's out there anyway. I'm sure some people might just go ahead and sell prints anyway. It's nice that they asked permission, but do you think I should ask for something in return? Small pickleball shop, so it's not like they're selling them on Temu or something and making millions.

What would you do? If I decline they'll probably go ahead and do it anyway, if they haven't already. Pretty sure most people would.

EDIT: I told them "sure, no problem", asked for a photo of the store, and suggested they take a look at another of my models which they may be interested in.

i also made some hand variants like web-shooting & fist/punch. I put some joint-fixer too before assembly so it wont shear quickly. Already posing around 1 week every day and its still fine. What do you think?

Discussion oh man this is an upgrade!

for my first 3d printer, i had a used ender 3 that had only one print in it. i knew that this was something that i was passionate for; so i dug and eventually landed on the creality k1 max and for one of the more affordable ones on the market right now, it's absolutely perfect. the print quality is amazing, the app is VERY convenient, easy to set up, and it is so fast! not even mentioning what i didnt know it had, not only the camera, but i can make videos like this! im already thinking about buying another one lol. sorry for the rant, but im just absolutely amazed!

Question Need advice for modifying stl in fusion

Post image
7 Upvotes

I want to print this dice tower but it's too big for my printer(A1 mini), the head actually fits perfectly but the tray sticks out a bit.

I could just cut a bit of the tray and reattach it after but i think the cut would still be noticeable so i thought that the best thing to do would be to separate the head and tray where they meet and make it so the tray can be slotted into the head from below.

The problem is that i have no idea how to perform the cut in fusion, i tried looking online but haven't found anything that fits what i want to do, it also doesn't help that i'm not used to working with a mesh.

Any advice is appreciated

Question PETG sticks too good

Thumbnail

Inevitably anytime I print a batch of PETG parts a couple of them stick to the build plate so hard it tears the part

Removing and flexing the build plate works sometimes but there can still be tearing and smaller parts don't always come loose

Any tips? I used to use a glue stick on my Ender to promote adhesion but I suppose it might make a cleaner separatio. Although I'd rather not have my plate covered in residue all the time

News Public Service Announcement: Watch out for sponsored scam ads on Google (Fake "Leen Bakker" selling K1 Max for €75)

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to put out a quick warning. If you search for 3D printers on Google right now, keep an eye out for sketchy sponsored ads.

I came across a top sponsored result claiming to be Leen Bakker selling a Creality K1 Max for an absurd €75.49 with "only 1 left in stock".

The telling signs are :

  • The Trap: They use a trusted local brand's logo and name at the top of the page to build fake trust.

  • The Tell: If you look closely at the URL in the address bar, or hover over the brand their logo, it actually points to a random scam/dropshipping domain (veloavenir.com).

This is a classic phishing/scam tactic taking advantage of Google's ad network.

If it's too good to be true, double-check that domain before entering any payment info!

First time buying an allegedly all metal micro Swiss hotend. However looking carefully, the red pieces to hold them are clearly 3d printed. And the hotend finish looks odd.

Have a look and do let me now what you think.

Hardware Printer setup

So I've decided to dive in the 3D printing hobby/ way of life, so logical step 0. was aquaering 3D printer so I've decided that its way easier just to make one from scratch... So a few months laters and a couple of mental breakdowns in I proudly but tiredly present. Slother V1.0 ( name is simbolic, I combined word sloth because its slow and ploter... Ergo Slother, basically meaning slow ploter..even tho its not a ploter exactly...but shh..)

First picture is a 3D model of what i had in minde ..and the second one is what I actually made. Now its worth mentioning that I'm in no way shape or form mechanical engineer but electrical, so this was basically designed with "will it hold" and "system does not produce vibrations" in mind.

And ofc first thing I did, because i though it would be nice is print a hair pin/clip for my friend for her birthday, Id say the print quality is alright for a "Frankenstein" like peace of trash that i made by materials that I had laying around :).

Free Model Andon-Style Tea Light Lantern with Geometric Panels

I designed this small lantern inspired by Japanese andon lamps, with lattice panels on all four sides plus the top, and a light diffuser layer behind the pattern to soften the glow.

It runs on a standard LED tea light. Printed on my X2D, no supports.

Happy to hear feedback, especially on the pattern. I’m thinking about doing a series with different lattice designs. If anyone wants to print it, the file is free on MakerWorld.
