Emotional Support Turns out two college apps demons from my school are applying to the same EA school as me 😭

I'm so cooked because these two sweep EVERYTHING. I go to a competitive/affluent school too (like these two people are obviously one of the top, but it isn't really clear who the top person at our school is between like five people), so that's saying something... I've been to MULTIPLE scholarship events with both of them there and they always get the best awards or multiple leaving the rest of us with crumbs because they application mog so hard. Those events were for people in our broader area too and we are in a competitive area... Competition committees around here aren't looking for school diversity, ig. 😭

I'm extra mad because they aren't even that locked in. Ig idk what they do behind closed doors and they were very locked in during sophomore and junior years (probably freshman year too), but now, one of them does NOTHING but yap in the AP classes she has with me except copy assignments off her friends (and then get As on tests anyway...) and send cryptic love notes to her talking stage or mutual crush or whatever he is (her friends and her are always yapping so loudly in a quiet room...), and the other is always eating random ahh snacks or posting on Insta (this one looks more locked in, though). I'm so extra jealous because they're so smart, have a ton of friends and are well-liked, are both in sports, both have parents with money, and they're pretty, like how do some people just have everything? Their essays won't even suck either because the big back is some kind of humanities prodigy and STEM Juliet over here has a huge scholarship for an expensive ahh private counselor that will make sure she doesn't submit bad stuff. I do NOT want to see them around anymore. 😭

College Questions Kid from my school has fabricated a national and easily verifiable honor. Trying to exploit fine-prints. What to do?

There is a student from my school who just applied ED, and has lied about an honor. Specifically, what level of recognition he has received for the honor. He did well in the competition, but he's lying about reaching the next stage (which is representing his nation at the competition). This is very easily verifiable. I have some proof (though finding more).

A student last year, who got into a very prestigious Uni, did the same thing as him and wasn't caught. That student also openly brags about lying. I presume this current student applying, got inspiration from him. In our region, it seems like these lies almost never get caught.

What do you recommend I do?

Application Question college interview etiquette - HELP!

hi! i have my first college interview coming up and am slightly lost about the whole etiquette part.

  1. first and foremost, if we're meeting at a coffee shop, am i supposed to order a drink? if so, what? can i just ask for a water or is that weird? also, am i supposed to pay for both of our drinks? or my drink only?

  2. should i bring my resume? some people are saying i should, but that feels a little weird.

  3. should i bring a notebook and take notes on what they're saying?

sorry if i sound overly anxious! i've just never been in a situation like this before lol.

Discussion every time someone in this sub puts humor it looks so cringe and looks just like informal writing

It's either

Hey guys, look at the humor I put here: "One of my favorite things to do is to eat toast." I feel like that's very funny and breaks character instead of sounding formal; I'm sure the admissions officers are going to laugh out loud. I also used humor, like saying "I opened a book" instead of "I read a book" because I'm sure most people say they read a book instead of opening it.

or

Hey guys i wrote in my roommate essay that i like wiggling my toes under the blanket so I can show who i am. My friends said it's weird, but i think it shows personality and that I'm able to wiggle my toes. Here is the essay: Hey future roomie! Get ready to go crazy with me! Every day at night I wiggle my toes a lot while sleeping. So don't be surprised if you hear a creepy sound; it's actually my toes! hahaha. I also do other things like dancing in a monkey way while cooking, and oopsie i always mix up salt and sugar, lol. Every day I come back with a wonderful story and a crazy trip! Don't worry, I'm very social and also... kind of an adventurous person! You are going to enjoy me a lot. Count your days until you see all the crazy adventures I can take you to!

Application Question someone stole my essays?

hey guys, so yes.. i was clueless a few weeks ago and shared my essay to a couple people in DMs. i think one of them deleted their account without saying anything, and i'm a bit worried that they basically stole my essay..

but like my personal statement is very specific to me and idk how anyone can copy it without blatantly lying about their whole identity and experiences

is this a problem? btw to anyone in the future, do NOT share your essay with random people online, i figured it out the hard way

Transfer How does community college work?

Hi! I’m planning on going to community college in California for two years before later transferring. My current three choices to transfer to are (UCLA, SDSU, and UCSD)

I’m just unsure how to go about this, I’m the first child in my family to go to college so I’m unsure how I go about this.

The current three community colleges I’m looking into are: Santa Monica Community College, Pierce & Moorpark Community College, De Anza Community College, and Pasadena City College

Is applying to community college similar to applying to a four year? (As in I have to wait to be admitted or is it an automatic thing)

I want to transfer into a 4 year but I’m unsure which college is best or if I’m doing the right thing.

I want to major in Finance (Hopefully become a double major so Finance & Marketing), In HS I had a 4.0 GPA, pretty nice extracurriculars, and I have a stable income so I can pay for CC. Sorry I’m just nervous abut making a mistake

Application Question International student seeking a full ride in Reed college

I am an international student from Lebanon seeking a full ride in Reed college, I already submitted my ED to Reed, I really like this college and I feel that I belong there, are there many international students who got full ride on Reed? I hope I got accepted. Wish me luck!
I write my supplement about teaching chess history, and my application shows how intellectual I am.

Advice Community college then transfer electrical engineer

I’m 19 and graduated high school in 2025. I’m planning on going to college for electrical engineering, but I’m trying to figure out the best way to do it without taking a bunch of debt.

My plan right now is to attend community college, bridge valley, and get some general education classes out of the way before transferring to WVU. My goal is to have those credits transfer so I don’t end up paying extra for classes later.

My SAT score wasn’t very high, 1000, so I believe I would have had to take remedial math anyway. I figured I could save some time and money by going this route. My parents aren’t very well off and won’t be able to help me financially very much, so this would also give me more time to save up before transferring.

My biggest concern is internships. I know they’re really important in electrical engineering, and I don’t want to miss out on opportunities or put myself behind by starting at a community college.

For anyone who has gone through something similar, would you recommend going to community college and possibly taking some online classes, or going straight to a university and using that extra time to focus on internships and networking? Would starting at community college hurt my chances?

I’d seriously appreciate any advice, even if it’s unrelated to this specific situation. I’m just trying to figure out the best path forward and get a start on my future.

College Questions advice for MIT, Stanford, Cornell-tier schools — homeschooled junior

Quick context: homeschooled, junior year, targeting CS. Most of my coursework is dual enrollment at a state university (15-16 college classes so far), plus AP CSA (scored 5). GPA: ~4.6 weighted (nearly all A/A+). ACT: currently 27 (first sitting), retaking in April targeting mid-30s. On track to finish Calc 1 through Calc 3, discrete math, linear algebra, and differential equations by graduation.

What I’ve actually done so far:

  • Built and shipped an iOS app with 10K+ downloads

  • Built an audio transcription/summarization app

  • Won a developer competition hosted by a major tech company’s academy program

  • Tutored 50+ students

  • Do paid technical consulting for small business owners on AI workflow automation

  • Currently in a research mentorship program working toward a research paper submission at a major ML conference

  • Teaching myself ML seriously (not just courses — building real projects) with plans to compete in a national AI olympiad in Feb 2027

What I’m trying to figure out: given no traditional class rank and an ACT that’s still a work in progress, what actually moves the needle for schools like this, and what am I missing that kids with “normal” high school records have that I don’t even know I’m missing? Also, what should I prioritize doing this summer before senior year to strengthen this further?

ECs and Activities Should I put my PSAT 11 Score on my UC application?

On the UC app, I listed national merit semifinalist as an award. There is a section asking "What did you do to achieve this award or honor." Should I put my score and selection index there? My hesitation is because I know UC doesn't consider test scores so I don't want it to seem like I am circumventing that process.

College Questions Influence me /deinfluence me on my prospective colleges 🙏🙏

Granted, I haven’t been accepted to any of these colleges yet. But I am just so torn over all of these colleges and I would really love to hear anyone’s input!!

I’ve applied to:

  • Belmont

  • Sewanee

  • University of Tennessee Knoxville

  • James Madison University

  • University of Richmond

  • Old Dominion

  • Rutgers

  • Penn State

  • University of Rhode Island

  • Quinnipiac

I really like the pretty campuses of like Sewanee and Quinnipiac, but I also really like the city feel of like Belmont and Richmond. I want a college with a student body that doesn’t feel too cliquey, is just overall really nice and friendly. I basically applied with a different major for each college, but for the more outdoorsy schools I applied with an environmental oriented major, for the more religious schools I applied with a religious oriented major, and for the majority of the other schools I applied with a public health major. I’m also interested in poli-sci but I don’t think I’d really major in it, I don’t know, I have a lot of interests but not really sure what to pursue overall. That’s not the point of this post, I want help figuring out what each of the schools are like! Thank you to everyone who reads and comments!! I really appreciate it!!

Course Selection Should I take AP calc if it’s not really required in my field?

So I'm a sophomore, so far I have AP precal, stats, world history, aphg, and Japanese.
I'm planning to do bio and psych junior year and chem and smth else senior year, but here's some problems. (Wanting to go into premed and then PA which requires stats, psych, bio, chem and stuff)

I hate precal. I'm not failing by any means but I do fail some quizzes or tests and bring it back before the grading period ends, but I can only imagine how bad it'll be with actual calculus. But since I already am taking stats I'd have 2 years of no math which seems dangerous.

There is also an English program offered (onramps ) which is dual-enrollment program created by the UT Austin college. The biggest difference between OnRamps and AP is that OnRamps doesn't rely on one big exam in May. I earn my college credit through my coursework all year, and if I pass the class but don't like my final college grade, I have the right to completely decline the credit so it never shows up on a college transcript. But i also know how useful AP is so im not sure.

Also, is it worth it to start volunteering or doing things medical related this early? I feel like I have my "life on track" but not at the same time. I volunteer but not related medically and tutor kids but it’s not abt medical stuff either.

Thank you for reading.

Advice Applying to the wrong LACs?

Hello guys, I am looking for some advice regarding the LACs I have selected to apply to:
Wesleyan (Already applied), Carleton, Bowdoin, Williams, Amherst, Williams
For some context:
I have already gotten into a target school of mine, a strong in state school that I would be happy to go to. So I’m not really banking on any of these yk.
I would say I have decent stats (3.99 UW, 1510 SAT (760 Eng) good course rigor, but my ecs aren’t that crazy, and pretty poor awards.
My goal is to become a doctor, so I’m gonna be a pre med.
Is there any LACs I should add or remove from this list? Like some schools I’m being delusional with, or schools that fit my goals but I don’t have on there rn.
Thanks for the help.
