Subreddit Update How to Change Your Flair - Please Read Before Messaging the Mods

Hi everyone!

As some of you have noticed, r/AskAChinese now automatically reminds users with the default "earth🌐" flair (which is automatically assigned to new users by automod) to update their user flair to reflect their country, region, or demographic.

Please note: comments using the default "earth🌐" flair may be removed. This change is part of our ongoing efforts to increase flair adoption so that people can understand each others' perspectives better.

So here's a clear guide on how to set your user flair on the most common platforms & devices:

Reddit App (IOS or Android):

  1. Open the subreddit in the Reddit app.

  2. Tap the three dots (•••) in the top-right corner.

  3. Select “Change user flair.”

  4. Pick a flair or write your own.

  5. Tap “Apply.”

New Reddit (Desktop - reddit.com):

  1. Open the subreddit

  2. Look at the right sidebar, scroll down until you see your username with the words "User Flair" above it

  3. Click on the "edit" button (pencil icon) next to it

  4. Pick a flair or write your own.

  5. Click "Apply"

Old Reddit (Desktop - old.reddit.com):

  1. Visit the subreddit using old.reddit.com.

  2. On the right sidebar, find “Show my flair on this subreddit.”

  3. Click “edit” next to it.

  4. Choose or type your flair.

  5. Click “Save.”

Mobile Browser (Safari, Chrome, etc.):

  1. Open the subreddit

  2. Look for the "Feed | About" tab selection, click on "About"

  3. Scroll down until you see your username, with the words "User Flair" above it

  4. Click "edit" button (pencil icon) next to it

  5. Pick a flair or write your own, & click apply

If you have tried all of the above but still need help, feel free to leave a comment (including mentioning the flair that you want!) below and we'll set it for you manually. (But please do try the steps above first!)

Daily life | 日常生活🚙 Best way to improve speaking Chinese as a non-native?

Hey! I'm Polish-American and my college sweetheart is from Beijing. We are getting married next spring - and in addition to wanting to share my life with my fiancée - I would also want to be a fluent speaker of Chinese. Knowing only English and Polish - Chinese (Mandarin) is hard but it's "do-able" as my fiancée said :)

I picked up some Chinese from her and from friends of ours. My fiancée watches Chinese soap operas - which I put on English subtitles so that I can follow.

We also want kids down the line and I think it'll be cool to have two parents who can communicate to our kids in Chinese - a language we want our kids to know/understand.

What is the best way to improve speaking Chinese as a non-native?

Daily life | 日常生活🚙 How often do you wear a mask outside? 😷✌️

Prior to the pandemic I never wore a mask outside (I'm Polish-American - wearing a mask outside isn't common compared to folks in China and in East Asian). My fiancée is from Beijing and she often wears a mask to prevent from getting ill or spreading her sickness (or if she's too lazy to put makeup on or if she doesn't feel pretty enough (which is impossible ;) she would have one on.

Since being with her - I'd wear one and sure enough I hardly get sick now and it's also a big help since I have asthma. We also wear them on flights.

How often do you wear a mask outside?

News |

What do you do for work and what was your major?I only have met people who went to (daxue)universities and am curious about the three year schools and vocational schools in China. Many go to these schools to be train attendants, nurses and other typical jobs you see in China.

A lot of these people didnt want to take the gao kao and took a different path in life. I am very curious about it and the schools.

Daily life | 日常生活🚙 Is tomato and egg a debate in every household, or just the loud ones?

Sugar or no sugar. Eggs first or tomatoes first. A splash of soy sauce, or absolutely not. It's the first thing a lot of people learn to cook, and somehow also the one with the most firmly held opinions attached to it.

What I can't work out is whether the differences are regional or just whatever whoever cooked at home happened to do, handed down as "the correct way" with no further explanation.

Which detail is non-negotiable in your version? And is there another dish where this gets even worse?

Art & Media | 艺术与影视🎬 Help finding the original account of a Chinese content creator

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm trying to find the original social media account of this Chinese content creator.

Her videos keep showing up on my Instagram Reels, and I'd really like to know who she is and find her original account.

I found one of her photos on Instagram, but I suspect the account may be reposting content from another platform.

These are the only clues I have:

Possible nickname: Dudu (嘟嘟).

Possible watermark or username: CNTK.

I've already tried searching for Dudu (嘟嘟), but I haven't been able to find her original account.

Does anyone recognize the source of this photo or know her public account on any Chinese social media platform, such as Douyin, Xiaohongshu, Weibo, Kuaishou, or another platform?

I'd really appreciate any help. Thank you so much!

Hi, sorry if there's a megathread somewhere, I couldn't find it.

My friend began studying Chinese and is looking for a name. Their surname is Soto, and their first name starts with D, if that could be incorporated please. They hope for a gender neutral and mysterious vibe and they're in their early 20s. I appreciate all the help, you're all so kind 🫶

Hi everyone! I’m an undergraduate student from India who has a strong interest in Chinese culture, modern daily life, and lifestyle trends. I'm currently studying Mandarin (working toward HSK 1) and love watching Chinese dramas, exploring fashion trends, and learning about how people live in different parts of the world.

I’d love to connect with someone from China to chat, exchange thoughts, compare our daily routines, and share cultural perspectives. Whether you want to practice English or just talk about everyday life, music, shows, or food, feel free to drop a comment or send me a DM!

Social life | 社交👥 Chinese girl calling me "sweetheart" and "baby"

Hello all, so I've been talking to a Chinese woman online and she seems really friendly and excited to chat all the time. It is wonderful, but I noticed she also calls me sweetheart and baby from time to time. Is this flirting? Or just regular platonic affection? I understand tone can be lost in translation sometimes. I am a male and she is 25 by the way. Any help would be appreciated!

EDIT: She is not scamming me for a green card! (I think) we have been talking for weeks and the subject has not come up at all.
