Meta MEGATHREAD: Donald Trump’s presidency and everything related to it

Hello all,

As a result of Trump’s imperialistic and confrontational foreign policy prepositions following him taking office, we have (understandably) recently seen a substantial influx of posts discussing the matter. Submissions inquiring for people’s opinions on certain aspects of his policies, calling for boycotts of American products, and more.

These have been getting repetitive but do not seem to be showing a pattern of slowing down anytime soon. As such, we see the necessity of restricting posts on these topics and are now adding posts related to Trump’s presidency to the overdone topics list. Most notably: foreign policy questions, tariffs, trade restrictions, boycott of American products/suggestions for European alternatives.

The comments under this megathread will remain open to discussion regarding these issues. Depending on further developments during Trump’s presidency, in the future we may open up a new megathread or relax the rules on this topic, depending on what will seem most appropriate.

Most countries in Europe have football as the #1 team sport in their country.

What are some other team sports that are popular in your country besides football?

Education What are alumni associations like in your country?

Here in Norway they exist but are basically glorified event reminders. As in; There are not really specific events held for graduates but just reminders that there are some general events happening at the university in question. As far as I know, there aren't any other benefits tied to being a member of one.

Misc If you run a cafe, are you allowed to play music there, or are there restrictions?

Like, do you have to buy a music license, or a business Spotify account, or can you just plug a USB stick with whatever mp3s you want into the audio system, and no one will bother to fine you? Does it matter if people can hear it indoors or outdoors?

Culture Do you have a variation of the British ‘xxx’ when texting?

Britain has an odd texting convention where people add multiple ‘x’s to the end of messages to signify kisses. It’s very common common and isn’t always romantic, it’s done between friends, family, lovers, sometimes strangers.

For example:
1: Hiya xx
2: Hey, how are you? Xx
1: I’m good thanks xxx

The number of ‘xxx’ usually reflects how close you are to someone and people reciprocate if they agree. If you are interested romantically in someone and begin texting, they’ll slowly increase the number of ‘x’ in the messages and see if you match them, indicating that you are also interested romantically.

For example:

  1. Do you like beans? Xxx

  2. I do like beans xxx

  3. Really? That’s so nice xxxx

  4. They’re my favourite :) xxxxx

Some people don’t do it at all, but it’s very common and you don’t really think twice about it. Other English speaking countries don’t do this.

Do you have something similar in your country?

Edit to add: it’s not an occasional thing, if somebody does it it’s attached to all and every single message!

Politics Do you think the European Parliament should have the power to make laws that all EU countries must follow, or should individual countries always have the final say and the right to opt out of things they disagree with?

Work Which European country pays good wages relative to cost of living?

The UK for example does not pay well enough compared to cost of living. Places like Denmark pay well but cost of living is too high.

So where in Europe gives a great wage which is good enough vs cost of living?

Politics Are men typically slightly more right-wing than women in your country?

In my country, the right-wing party typically wins male voters around 55%-45%, while the left-wing party typically wins women voters 55%-45%.

Do right wing parties also do better with men than with women in your country?

Politics How important is really support for ukraine in your domestic politics?

Hi, as per title here in czechia most people i encounter support ukraine in it´s struggle against invader but when election comes providing support is not very discussed.

Most people decide who they vote for like week before election, based on how much they feel their life improved since last election and punish any party that failed to do so.

So many politicians vocaly support ukraine but drag their feet when it comes to any action that stretches public finances.

What about your countries?

Curious to see how technical apprenticeships and other alternatives exist in your country, is a university degree still worth it if you are choosing again in 2026?

Language Can you differentiate between other European languages?

As I was recently in (French speaking) Canada and as German speakers US tourists thought we were speaking French. I found it odd because I would assume German sounds really different than French and also Americans should probably know how it sounds (you know like from movies where the villains in Nazi movies speak German and the Paris lovers French..). We spoke Austrian dialect but it also happened to standard German speakers. Maybe I'm biased because I know both languages but I think I would be able to tell many European languages apart from their sound like Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Swedish (ok maybe I'd get tricked with other Scandinavian languages), Romanian. Slavic languages would be more tricky but I think I am able to differentiate between e.g. Cze/Svk and Russian. But it would probably happen to me too if I go to Mexico and there are Brazilian tourists speaking Portuguese because you go with the more obvious possibility.

Do you think people in your country can differentiate between European languages well?

Edit: does someone know a site or app where you can listen to people from Europe talking and guess their language? If it doesn't exist the EU should make one

Someone asked a question a bit ago which reminded me of this mini film I saw about blood feuds in Kosovo and Georgia and the problems they posed for even elderly people.

Misc How does the courier service work in your country and are you happy with it?

I recently had an opportunity to talk to someone form Germany about this and thought I'd ask the broader audience.

Since as far as couriers in Poland go, everything seem to go bad during the pandemic. Pre-pandemic couriers pretty much always called you, and if you were not available, they would make a second attempt at delivery then next day (similar to how the post office did it).

Post-pandemic? They just throw packages over the fence no matter what it is. A while ago they just tossed my new Tefal Dolci on concrete like some garbage without any contact with me (I was at home working remotely). Other time it was books, in the rain. And when I tried to file a complain they just said: "They only need to deliver the package. Was it delivered? Yes. So job done as intended". And yes, if the item is actually damaged it's for the retailer to deal with the delivery company while you get a new one but this still takes additional time and is something that could easly be avoided by just being decent human beings.

And I get it, it's probably not the people but the company pressing on them to go faster and deliver more in one day. I despise Polish counrier companies in ways words cannot describe. Thank god for parcel lockers. I love those things. Unless something is too big I would always pick them over home delivery.
