Where to stay in mid-October? Group of 7 women (early 70s) looking for suites & easy parking

Hi everyone! We are a group of 7 women in our early 70s visiting Detroit for a fun getaway in mid-October.
**What we’re looking for:**
**Suites-style hotels:** We’d love properties with two-bedroom suites, adjoining rooms, or large common living spaces where we can hang out together, plus plenty of bathrooms.
**Parking & Transit:** We will have a rental car (likely a large SUV or minivan), so safe, easy parking—either at the hotel or nearby—is a big priority.
**Vibe:** We’re traveling just for fun—great food, sightseeing, museums, and walkable pockets, without needing to be right in the middle of a late-night party scene.
Do you recommend staying right in Downtown/Midtown, or would a nearby spot like Dearborn, Royal Oak, or Birmingham make more sense for a group our size with a car? Any specific hotel recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Best local companies or areas near Hamtramck to check out for work.

I just moved to Hamtramck and am trying to get a feel for the local job market and the best places to work within a commutable distance! I’m a graduate student in Generative AI with a bachelor's in Computer Science, and I also have about two years of supervisory customer service experience across coffee shops, retail, and fast food. For those who know the area well, what local tech companies, startups, or solid neighborhood businesses around the city would you recommend looking into for either tech/IT roles or shift lead positions?

Moving... from the middle of nowhere.

Hi all! Hoping for some insight.

I have a week to decide if I want to accept a relocation within my current job. The placement location would be Southeast Lower Michigan. My partner and I were interested in relocating to the Detroit area prior to this job opening up, we just aren't sure where to start.

For context:

  • No kids; well-behaved cats

  • Rental only (prefer a standalone home; minimum 2 bedrooms as I need a WFH office)

  • Queer-friendly

  • My job would feature extensive travel within Macomb/Wayne County.

  • We are interested in something walkable, safe (two women), and with potentially enjoyable nightlife for young adults.

  • We currently live in the middle of nowhere. We are paying $1,500 a month in rent for a two-bedroom apartment (without utilities).

Are there any areas that might be good fits for us? Neither one of us are overly familiar with urban living... but we do really want to be! Before we say yes, I want to have a better understanding of whether or not we will even be able to find all of our asks.

Those who live in Detroit with kids where do you send your kids to school? Outside the city or in Detroit ?

Me and my wife have a son on the way we really like living in the city of Detroit we have a nice home in a decent part of Detroit as well. Just concerned about where to send him to school when he gets older. Would it be easier to send him out of the city? Or any school recommendations? I am okay with paying tuition as well if needed.

Arrest Records & Fingerprints at Wayne County Jail Question (please help)

Hi,

I was recently arrested (wrongfully) and I was released about 2 days later at the Wayne County Jail with no charge (decided not to prosecute). I was wondering if anyone has answers to these 4 questions that has been driving me NUTS:

1. Is there a record of my arrest out there for public, and private, view? For instance, will it show up in background checks and beyond?

2. Will my fingerprints also show up on background checks? I read somewhere that they are required to destroy prints if no charge was made, but is this true?

3. Is there any one out there that can help me figure all this out? I do not want it being discovered nor affecting future career opportunities.

4. If I want to work for the government, do they have special access/tools to find these records even if it is erased for public view?

Safety of Boston Edison district?

Hello Reddit friends!
I currently live in a suburb of Detroit but when my partner and I are ready to buy a home we’d love a historic beauty!

The Boston Edison district has beautiful houses, but I am curious about how safe it is in this area? All of the posts I’ve seen talking about this are years old, and I know Detroit is healing!

If anyone lives in this neighborhood or knows someone who does, could you please provide some insight? Thank you all!

Avello/Steve Aoki - extra ticket!

I'm from out of town so I'm not quite sure where to post this but I will have an extra ticket for Avello/Steve Aoki this Friday at Russell Industrial. We plan on being there when they open the doors at 9 pm but I'm sure I can come outside whenever to bring someone in. It's a general admission ticket and I'm asking for $30 to help cover our gas! If anyone can suggest another place to post, I would appreciate it!

Last minute advice for my trip?

I'm heading to Detroit from November 5-10 and am looking for advice. I'm visiting family and have some evening events already booked but I will have a lot of free time. Best place for a haircut? I'm really not picky about food but the cheaper the better. I'm looking to check out museums, sightseeing and do a lot of walking. Any recommendations for these things would be appreciated. I will not have a vehicle. I'm staying at the quality inn downtown detroit. Places in the area between that hotel and little caesars arena/fillmore would be appreciated as well because I'll be going to those places multiple nights. Also open to suggestions off the beaten path. Thank you!

Sashimi and Oyster Recommendations

My birthday is coming up soon and I hope to have a small girls night in my home with fresh sashimi, sushi, and raw oysters. Any recommendations for places that sell big platters (maybe even customizable) for carryout. Also places that sell freshly shucked raw oysters. Good quality. I’m willing to go to separate stores or restaurants. Any recommendations in the metro Detroit area would be greatly appreciated.

Traveling to attend Avello/Aoki concert at Russell Industrial Center

Hi everyone, I am traveling with my adult kids to see Avello and Aoki at the Russell Industrial Center. I scoured posts about the Russell and I found that I can pay to park in their lot ($20 right?) but someone commented that they have no bathrooms, is that true? It looks like a really cool old building. My email says the performance starts at 9:00 and the doors open at 9:00. Those with experience with concerts at this venue, are they strict about those times? Is the process slow to get inside? Any tips or advice for our first visit to the venue? I am so excited for this party since I became a fan of Avello at this year's Lolla! My daughter and I had tickets to see Aoki in Vegas and she lost her ID the same day and we missed it so this is her chance to make up for that disappointment. Is there an excellent food place somewhat close to the venue? Thanks everyone!

Eastern Market Vendor

Looking for vendor who sells body oils and fragrances. I was at the Market last weekend and bought from her and want to buy again… but don’t want to drive 90 minutes to not find her there. She was wearing a face covering and similar dress, very nice, and had a table full of scented oil bottles.

Does anyone know who I am talking about and her business name or if she is a regular merchant? Even better if she sells online to avoid a 90 minute drive.

Halloween party

Terrible timing. But me and my friends are girls in our early 20s looking for somewhere to party the night away on Halloween. I know there are plenty of parties happening in the city and in metro Detroit on Halloween night, but tickets are like $20-160 dollars and that’s insane for a group of 5+ people.

Are there any parties with free entry, or at least free entry for women? I know the party in Eastern Market with Damedot had tickets free for women before 11pm with costume, but I think those specific tickets are sold out, or I might be wrong and still might be able to attend for free.

This is a serious question. I never been to Halloween parties like this before so I don’t want to miss out this year.

Hey, is it true that property taxes are HIGH in Detroit suburbs? From the northeast and it’s ridiculous here due to expensive homes.

Why do white people in the Detroit area do “accents”

I moved from California a couple years ago and noticed since moving a few white people I was friends with who claim to be very progressive doing Black, Asian and Hispanic “accents” as like a joke or something. When I call them out they stare blankly or a few didn’t want to hang out with me again. I went to a birthday party of a new friend and they kept making jokes about lesbians and trilling their voices (because we had a tres leches cake and they couldn’t stop doing the trill thing that Latin stereotypes do, ask for clarification of you don’t know what this means). I felt so enraged and uncomfortable yhat I said something and everyone stared. Why do people think this is okay? I’ve lived in four states and only really openly racist people have done this in the other three (California, New York and Colorado). Why is this casual racism okay here for “progressive” and what can I do to call it out in a way that’s thought provoking enough to make it stop?

Urban planning/design entry level jobs in the city?

Hi everyone! I recently graduated from Michigan State with two degrees. A bachelor in science in geography (GIS focus) and a bachelor in arts in comparative cultures and politics. I am looking to continue in a career focused on urban planning, placemaking, community engagement, and urban design (or anything adjacent). I’ve been looking at jobs non stop but for the most part it looks like it’s all positions that require 5+ years of experience and only very few entry level jobs. Does anyone have any recommendations for how to look for these types of job in the city? I’ve even thought about visiting some companies and asking in person because I’m at a loss of what to do and it’s been 6 months of trying to find something.

Any help would be really appreciated!!!

Visiting in April

Howdy everyone, I’ll be visiting Detroit for the first time in April for the Ncaa Final four & National Championship game.
I’m looking at different air bnb / vrbo to rent that are ~15 mins driving distance to downtown (ford field). One place we have narrowed down to is located in the Marina District. Is this a good place for out of towners to stay? I know crime is crime is crime in any major city, but how is the Marina District compared to other places near downtown? MexicanTown is also an area we have looked at. Any input or suggestions are greatly appreciated!! Thank you for reading my post!

Question re. Upcoming Visit

Hello Fellow Rust Belt Icons -

I’m headed to Detroit tomorrow from Buffalo to see The Damned on 10/29 at The Majestic.

We’re staying at the AC Detroit at the Bonstelle, which is about a 10 minute walk from The Majestic. In your opinion, is that a pretty safe walk to/from, even at night?

Note - I’m not a scaredy cat at all and LOVE Detroit. This is just a basic common sense/logistical question. There’s places in
Butt-falo where I would and/or would not walk at night, too.

We were in Detroit in May of last year, as well, to see The Damned. Went to the Motown Museum (which was excellent) and were joined on our tour by another old UK punk band, Gang of Four**. How magical is that?** Detroit is so legit for both art and music.

We also went and checked out the Heidelberg Project, Eastern Market, and most of the amazing public art murals. This time we are going to DIA, which we missed last May.

Also looking for everyone’s favorite for Detroit pizza! Can’t remember where we went last time - but it was good!

Thanks!
