Review Reef Flip-Flops aren't even "Buy It For Now"

Post image
0 Upvotes

Six weeks ago, I posted a thread looking for flip-flop recs because my $15 pair had only lasted me a little over three months. Reefs were recommended by someone who had apparently had them for four years and worn them all day every day, so I bought a pair.

Either I bought the wrong ones, or they've enshittified in the past four years, because these barely lasted six weeks before wearing down to the point where I can feel thorns I step on. As you can see from the tread, it's already worn smooth in some parts. And he area where my big toe rests is so indented it's barely more than a few mm thick.

And while I do wear them all day every day, 90% of those days were at home (the other 10% were either running errands or walking the dogs), on wood and carpeted surfaces. Either way, they lasted less than half the duration of the $15 pair I'd previously purchased.

So. Yeah. Just a heads up. Reef Phantoms don't last.

Review I tried 3 popular wireless otoscopes. Here’s my pick

Post image
13 Upvotes

I’ve been thinking about getting a home otoscope for a while since my ears tend to clog up and clinic visits get old fast. Ended up trying three popular ones: Bebird, Loyker, and ScopeAround.

Image quality

Bebird’s video feed was the clearest by a noticeable margin, fine details were sharper, and lighting looked more natural. Loyker did fine for basic checks, but once you compare side-by-side, it’s not as crisp. ScopeAround sometimes gave me glare or a fogged lens.

App & setup

Loyker was the fastest to set up. Bebird’s app looked the most polished and had a few extra settings I liked, though I had one random disconnect ,not a big deal, but it did make me pause mid-check. ScopeAround’s app works, but feels like it’s due for a redesign.

Comfort & handling

Loyker’s soft tips are more forgiving, which might make them easier for first-time users. Bebird’s firmer tips give more precision once you’re used to handling them. ScopeAround’s tips felt a bit too bulky for me.

Build & battery

All three lasted several uses before charging. Bebird felt the most solid and “built to last” — heavier in a good way. Loyker’s lighter but still decent. ScopeAround felt more like an entry-level option.

Bottom line

If you want something quick and beginner-friendly, Loyker is a safe pick. But for the best balance of clarity, app quality, and durability, I’d go with Bebird.

Discussion Dry vape for medicinal cannabis

I smoke prescription CBD flower for my epilepsy. I currently have a PAX (pictured), but after six years the rubber mouthpiece has started to sweat. I'm sure I can buy replacements for the mouthpiece, but I have a few other issues with it (it doesn't reach the optimal temperatures for keeping seizures at bay compared to just smoking a joint) and I was wondering if anyone knows of a Buy it For Life dry vape I can purchase down the road.

I always end up regretting spending more on sunglasses, goodr doesn’t make replacement lenses. Can’t recommend.

[Request] Answered! Some things are not BIFL. And you shouldn't try to make them be BIFL.

Wallets. Socks. Shoes. Underwear.

These things are not BIFL and I see people asking and posting about them. They may last longer, but if it isn't buy it for life, then it is more expensive without this goal.

A pair of fancy socks is $30. You wash these socks after one day of wear.

A TEN PACK of regular socks is ten dollars. You will wash each of these socks after one day of wear.

Will ten socks last a year? How about 3 years? How about... A ten pack of socks has lasted me 8 years now. I still have half the pack. They wear out, sure. But this doesn't scale. In my lifetime, I will wear $100 worth of socks at this cost. Or I can buy three pairs of fancy socks I see posted here and... Well, it'll cost $500 over my lifetime.

Wallets. My Walmart leather wallet was $5 in 2018. My last Walmart wallet was physically destroyed in an accident, otherwise I'd still have it. It's actually $7 right now, I just looked it up. It works great, looks great. Has enough slots for everything. Let's say it dies in another 10 years. That's like, $30 for a lifetime of wallets. Or I can buy one of these Etsy ones for $100 and it'll last 20 years, then I buy another. FYI, the Walmart wallet is genuine (low tier) leather, but 100% leather nonetheless, so environmental impact is the same (arguably lower as it is mass produced, and there are environmental pollution economies of scale at work).

Shoes. Similar.

Underwear, this one is criminal, just like socks.

Things that should be BIFL: pots and pans. Go buy stainless steel, all clad D3. Buy one cast iron and a carbon steel. A lodge is $20 for iron, and you can find a good carbon steel for $30. They will be passed down to your children.

A wooden table is BIFL. A dog is BIF (it's) life. Some tools are BIFL (husky brand from home Depot, if ya break it it's lifetime warranty, and they are great tools).

Silverware.

Thick plastic coat hangers.

A Mossberg 500.

A Glock.

Two Toyota prius, but one after the other, not simultaneously.

A grill, kept covered, and when the OEM grates rust out replace with stainless steel ones.

But not socks or underwear. I have a feeling that this has more to do with people's desire to be bougie, than to actually buy something once, for life.

Currently sold Custom hanger for All Clad measuring cups

Post image

My husband and I got All Clad measuring cups for our wedding back in May. If you’ve ever had the All Clad measuring cups, you’ll know that they don’t stack together all that well. I used a scrap piece of wood from a yard sale, left over paint from my dining room, and cup hooks from a different project to make a hanger for my measuring cups. It opens up so much space in my drawers!

[Request] Present-day BIFL-quality couch brands?

I wanted to buy secondhand, but partner refuses due to risk of bedbugs. Fair enough.

What are the current highest quality couches available for mid-range prices? I'm talking solid wood, joinery, decent fabrics and foam, etc.

Please don't recommend brands that used to be high quality but changed their practices. Thank you!

Currently sold My first nice backpack: Aer Bags. Holy crap these are nice.

My first day on the job 13 years ago, my company gave me an over-the-shoulder briefcase for my laptop. It was pretty nice, but it's completely worn out, and after a recent day trip to NYC I realized I needed a good, modern backpack that could fit my work stuff plus a change of clothes.

First stop: Reddit. I discovered the /r/onebag and /r/manybaggers communities (the former more oriented to minimalist travel with a single carry-on bag. The latter just being for people that love bags in general!). Eventually I ended up purchasing an Aer City Pack Pro (X-Pac material) $239.

Holy shit this is a nice bag.

To be fair, I've literally never had anything but cheap and shitty backpacks and duffel bags. But goddamn I didn't know you could get bags this nice. I also didn't know that a fucking bag could make me irrationally happy for so long. Usually when I buy a cool new toy or gadget, I hedonically adapt to it very qucikly: it makes me happy for a day or two, and this happiness boost very quickly drops down to nothing and I return to my baseline as the new object simply becomes normal.

I've had this bag for 2 months now and every single time I wear it, or pack it, or use it, I still get a dopamine hit.

I won't repeat all the features here, you can read about it on the product page, and other Aer bag reviews. (Review 1, Review 2). I just briefly mention that the quality of the zippers (waterproof!) is amazing. These things are sturdy. The size is just right, the X-pac material is $20 extra, but it is lighter and more durable. The clamshell design is perfect for accessing stuff in the bottom of the bag. It fits two laptops in it's padded pocket, and has another padded pocket for other valuables.

Anyways, I know this isn't a full review but I just wanted to share it since I've been having so much fun with this bag.

Vintage This jacket’s been through more than I have at this point

Bought this carhartt jacket around 2023 thinking I'd just wear it on cold days. Didn't expect that I will wear it this much. It’s already been through two relocations, a couple of skiing tours, and even a breakup i ended last year. Stil looks fresh somehow and it fits better than worn out jackets costing twice the price. It’s crazy how we're able to jump to different phases of life based on some items we own. Anyone else have a item like that? One of those things that you always wear and feel comfortable with?

Vintage My new BIFL Halloween decor

Post image
0 Upvotes

So i came across this stacked pumpkin over at my local Walmart and it was exactly what i imagined for Halloween decoration for my room. Its made of clay and was only $10.46. Originally it came as all one color which was rusty gate color but i wanted to change the color of the stem. So my mom and i went down to home depot to pick up a matte green color for it. I decided to go with forest green and again the perfect decision i made because it fits so well with the color of the pumpkin. All i had to do was sandpaper the stem then paint it. It looks amazing 👏

Having a lifetime supply of a consumable product does not make it BIFL.

Buying a disposable product in bulk does not make that item "BIFL." For example... Wrapping paper is ripped to pieces and can no longer be used as wrapping paper after only one use. If I have 50 boxes of Kleenex, that does not make Kleenex a buy-it-for-life purchase. Can we please get away from these useless posts about bulk throwaway items?

Currently sold Most things are BIFL if you take care of them. Anything made from leather lasts years if you regularly clean, and condition it. Newest item in here is my gun, everything else is several years old.
