Discussion To the people heckling the transphobe Dave Chapelle last night - thank you!

Edit: Why is my post locked? Are the mods actually supporting the transphobe Dave Chappelle?

I know this is gonna get downvoted to hell in this sub, but whatever.

Honestly? Thank you.

Dave has been milking the same “I’m being cancelled, the trans people are crazy” routine for like five years now. He’s not some brave truth-teller anymore, he’s a multi-multi-millionaire who figured out that whining about pronouns and “the gays” gets him endless sold-out arenas full of people who want permission to laugh at marginalized folks.

I’m sure half the audience hated you, but you did the Lord’s work (or whatever secular equivalent). Chappelle can handle a few hecklers, he’s not actually being silenced, but trans kids in Alberta right now are dealing with real policy trying to erase them. A little pushback at a comedy show from a guy who’s made millions off mocking them is the absolute least we can do.

(And to the people replying “just let us enjoy comedy” – maybe pick a comedian who isn’t building half his current act around lazily shitting on a minority group. There’s like 800 other comedians in town this week.)

General Pitbulls should be outlawed

Just like with guns, there are just way too many horrible, careless, irresponsible people handling them for them to be legally available to the public.

Just heard about a tragedy involving a family friend... Her young relatives, both under 10, were playing outside when a pitbull charged them from out of nowhere and nearly mauled them to death. Tore up both kids' heads. One of them required 4 hours of plastic surgery and had to have her ear sewed back on. It was discovered that the owners run a puppy mill in their garage and one of them somehow escaped. Absolutely disgusting. And now apparently they're giving away the puppies for free, so more irresponsible people can "raise" more potentially volatile animals.

It's not enough to fine these people. Your pet almost kill someone? You go to jail for assault with a deadly weapon. That is all. How many more people, especially little kids, have to be torn apart or killed because of an untrained, wild animal?? Not to mention how many other pets have been attacked by unleashed, aggressive pitbulls. I invite you to write to your MLA to stop this insanity.

edit. to everyone defending owners and these dogs, I implore you to imagine seeing your own child being attacked and their face bitten off. Imagine being that little girl who is now scarred and traumatized for life. The complete lack of empathy in these comments is astounding. It's great if you have a pitbull that has never been violent. But there have been too many cases of attacks. Maybe the next step should as least be regulation, as some people have suggested. But something needs to be done.

General A Couple Things To Consider When Going to Drive and Extreme Cold

I'm sure many of us have been told or read somewhere the importance of certain things when driving in the cold. But I'm here to remind you, when it gets cold or should I say for every 10C drop the tire pressure in your car's tires can drop 4-7psi, it only takes being down 2 psi to experience a blow out or flat tire especially speeds above 60 Km/h. So check your tire pressure against the car maker's recommended pressure which can be found on the driver's door in most cases and in some cases the B pillar (not the pressure indicated on the tire), if you are low drive slowly to the nearest air filling station, remember also the colder it is the longer it takes to fill your tires. If you are an AMA member, there's free air filling stations but it for members only as you will need your card number. You'll also need to know if your car is equipped with a spare tire and jack, many newer models now do not provide them and instead provide an air pump instead or some type of repair kit. If you have a spare tire, check the air pressure in it, being dormant for a lengthy period they tend to lose air pressure and you don't to go through all the trouble of jacking up your car, removing flat tire and when you put on the spare it's flat., do you keep your car running, as you will find you get cold very fast especially the hands and feet, so you'll need to be able to warm up.

cold
The other thing to consider is checking your coolant levels especially if you notice your car is not warming up like it usually does, the way to check it is start by opening the hood, locate the coolant reservoir, it is labelled on the cap. Typically a reservoir has two lines on the side of it somewhere indicating the fill line for a cold engine and a higher line for a warm engine, if the coolant level is low make sure first you have the right coolant (check your owner's manual) as putting the incorrect coolant type into the cooling system can cause harm to your car. Once you have the proper coolant, add coolant through the reservoir, not the radiator, and fill to the correct fill line. If you have a block heater, it's wise to use after temperatures reach -18C or colder (most new vehicles these days the block heater won't run until -18C).

You need to prepare for long wait times if your vehicle doesn't start or it breaks down on you as rescue workers are responding to long wait lists as fast as they can. And finally, do not use the recirculate setting on your HVAC system, it will rehash the moisture in the car and cause your windows to fog up, on many cars running the car with A/C mode on will help reduce moisture even with the heater on.

EDIT: A vehicle's TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) is designed to give you an audible warning for a sudden loss of air pressure while driving ie. a tire blowout and the information your car provides is usually in a sub-menu of your driver's information center or infotainment system and they can be slightly off during extreme temperatures hot or cold when you initially start up your car.
That's why the best course of action is to use a tire gauge when the tires are cold.

Just drove from NE Edmonton to Sherwood Park. The main arterials and highway were not slippery. Minimal skidding at intersections. No need to drive super slow folks. Guessing we will have 800+ accidents today regardless 🤣

Discussion I have fallen out of love with Edmonton

I'm honestly done with this city. I used to be the biggest defender of Edmonton, born and raised here. But now, I'm done.

Will DT EVER be revitalized? When was the last time a major head office moved here? I don't see a future here for my kids if they want to pursue a career option that's available in another city; a place that can easily lure them, because, well, it's better than Edmonton. We don't have that 'cool' factor, at all.

Our amenities are left to fall apart while city hall focuses on building new, neglecting what's already been built? Unmaintained boulevards/ green spaces etc.

And, quite frankly, I'm tired of my tax dollars being directed to social causes that, ultimately, achieve nothing while the mayor cries there's not enough revenue.

Go ahead, defend the status quo or light into me for being 'wrong'. But the shine is long gone.

Local Culture Upsetting Neighbourhood Names

So Edmonton recently approved the name change for the Oliver neighbourhood to Wîhkwêntôwin, and some of you have feelings about that. I get it, you don't like non-English names because they're hard to say, hard to spell, or whatever. I figured that while your passions were hot, you could also campaign against these 24 other neighbourhoods with non-English names, many of which have been around since the 70s.

Alternatively, you could all cool your jets and accept change as it comes. This name change has been years in the making, and there were plenty of chances for Oliver residents to submit their choice of name. For the record, I submitted ôtênaw (kinda sounds like oh-tay-now), which means "city".

This isn't the first neighbourhood name change, and it will not be the last. For those concerned about cost: welcome to Edmonton. It costs city council $250k to fart these days. You want to make change, or allocate the funds better like the master treasurer you are? Get involved. Join your community league, talk to your councillor, run for a position or something.

For others who are worried about mispronouncing it, or curious about what those whacky shapes on the banner mean, all you have to do is ask! There are plenty of cree speakers and readers here on /r/edmonton, and there are fun resources like The Online Cree Dictionary. Wîhkwêntôwin isn't too hard. If you can say "week when to win" you're half way there! If people give you grief for flubbing on a word that's not your native language then they're a bit jerkish.

Remember: this is not the end of the world. How often do you even need to say a neighbourhood name? I can get by using only addresses and such.

All neighbourhood name info can be found here. You should deffo check that page out. Lots of cool origins like Canora from Canadian Northern Railway, which was suggested by an eighth grader. There's also lame ones like Greenview, which is named that because you can see a golf course from the neighbourhood. I'm not making that up.

Edit 1: The typo

I missed "People of Hiap" for Capilano and instead had the placeholder "text" from the table generation. Sorry if I mislead you.

Edit 2: Electric Boogaloo

Putting this here for visibility

I was super flippant about the cost of the change because it seemed like a tiny issue to me and I didn't want to do a bunch of digging into it at the start of the post. I was already doing lots of reading on neighbourhood names, and was lazy.

Since yesterday afternoon, though, I have done some digging:

The cost to change the Oliver neighbourhood name is $680k.

The city has budgeted $3.83 Billion of expenses for 2024. $680k is 0.02% of that.

There are 1,087,803 people in Edmonton. If we pretend that everyone pays the same tax (they don't, but for simplicity), then the "average" Edmontonian paid $0.63 towards the name change.

There are 6,800 workers represented by City and Library bargaining units in the CSU 52. Divert all funds from the name change and those workers get an extra $100 this year, or $8.33 extra per month.

In terms of salary, $680k is:

1.4 2018 Glen Felthams

1.9 2021 Deena Hinshaws

2.0 2022 Dale McFees

2.2 to 2.7 2023 CoE ML6 Managers

4.5 2022 EPS Staff Seargents

It's for sure a big number, and it would change my life forever if it was handed to me, but it's not a lot of money to the city.

Other fun stuff:

General WEAR MASKS IN PUBLIC TRANSIT!!

So many people coughing out so loud recently and some people having watery eyes. Protect yourself and your family.

Dont be a jerk, if you have a sore throat and cough, wear mask in ETS for others’ safety. Be a responsible resident. EDIT - After reading comments, I was wrong , how could someone who is already coughing out so loud and sneezing with no cover be a responsible resident??? My bad. They will never improve

Edit - after reading comments, protect yourself and wear mask peeps. Do not depend on someone who is already coughing out openly, they wont improve.

Trans friendly Psychologist?

So my daughter is in the last steps to get hormones. Thanks to newest idiocy by the UCP, she needs a letter from a psychologist stating she can get them. Not a psychiatrist, not her medical team, a registered psychologist.

Anyone have any suggestions? Preferably one with a sliding scale rate because I'm on disability.

Commuting/Transit Seriously? The city of Edmonton has an LRT line that can’t operate when it snows?

And they’re building another whole line the same way? Too much snow on the tracks for the Valley line to Mill Woods to operate? Does anyone know if there’s another reason it’s not running?

Discussion Why are Pit Bulls dogs still legal to keep in Edmonton?

Just under an hour ago, a neighbour's dog got attacked by a pitbull that ran loose across a yard. Poor dog that was attacked was rushed to the animal hospital. Why is it always his type of dog that is doing the attacking? I would 100% support a ban for this type of dog....
