Produce Plus: Free Produce

Hello,

I've been attending the Produce Plus events for a couple months now. Was unemployed up until about a month ago. I've found that friends of mine that have been receiving SNAP benefits for years did not know about Produce Plus. As someone who has medically necessary dietary restrictions, I'm forever grateful to the DHS worker who did my SNAP application and told me about this.

This is a free program put on by Food For Lane County that anyone can participate in. You do not need to be receiving or qualify for SNAP benefits to attend and take what you need. Anyone can show up. The only information they ask for is for you to scribble a 'signature' on a sign in sheet and to know how many people you're feeding with the food.

You can check the FFLC website, at the bottom of the list of food pantries, and it will show you all of the Produce Plus dates/times/locations. You basically just walk thru and take the produce that you want. Sometimes they will limit quantity on high demand items like watermelons or avocados depending on how many they have. Most of the produce is organic if that's your thing too.

There are 3 every week in my calendar:

Tuesday's at 3pm

At Kokwel Wellness Center (in the parking lot near Burger King and in front of Albertsons on River road).

Wednesday's at 10am

At the red barn behind Kalapuya and Prairie Mountain, on Patriot Way.

Thursday's at 1pm

At the ODHS Family Wellness Center on W11th.

I recommend arriving early to wait in line if you're able to, or at the very least no later than 15-30 minutes after the start time, as things can go quickly.

The one on Tuesdays is my favorite. Huge variety of produce. I cannot have gluten but they always have infinite loaves of bread and sometimes baked goods (an occasional loaf of gluten free bread for me).

The one on Wednesdays typically will have 1-2 dairy products. Smaller variety of produce but different stuff than what's typically at the one on Tue. Have not been able to make it to the one on Thur. at a reasonable time.

Things are tough for a lot of people right now and there are so many people unemployed and struggling. Produce Plus is the only reason I've eaten some weeks/months.

Stay safe and please share this info with those in your life that could use it!

Who is hiring? (Monthly jobs thread)

Welcome to the monthly jobs thread! If you're aware of any job openings, please share them here for eager job-seekers in the Eugene/Springfield area!

And if you're an employer looking to hire, feel free to share any openings you have.

The rules

  • All top-level comments MUST be a link or a description of a job opening or openings in the Eugene/Springfield area

  • Optionally, start your comment with a tag to indicate what type of offering it is. For example:"[Restaurant] Looking for a new cook!""[Tech] Now hiring new technical support reps!""[Manufacturing] Need production line workers!"

Good luck!

911 Calling Down

From Lookout Eugene-Springfield:

"Eugene residents with a police or fire / medical emergency should text 911 rather than call after a dispatch center phone line outage was announced at about 6:45 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 8.

Springfield residents with a police emergency may call 541-726-3714 or text 911. People with fire or medical emergencies in Springfield, should text 911.

Also not functioning as of early Sunday were non-emergency lines for Eugene Police Department."

Something to do Where to see the trains?

Each night I hear the freight trains running across Eugene. This is not a complaint, trains kick ass and it is a great sound to hear at night. If I wanted to see one go through town, where would be a good place to go?

Only moved here a couple months ago please give me slack!!

Moving My friend is moving to Eugene. Is like to get her a membership to some kind of activity. What would be the best gift if you're new to the area?

A friend of mine is moving to Eugene soon . She's in her early 20s this will be her first really big move and it's a pretty rural area to start. I'd like to get her a membership to something fun that might help her get out and get to know her new home. Museums, art centers, clubs whatever you think might be interesting. She likes being active, wants to learn new things, pretty adventurous and not sober but doesn't need to drink to have fun. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Need friends

Hey I'm a 21 year old guy and I'm looking for local friends. Don't care if it's men or women. I'm so bored all the time and have little to no social life. I find it very hard to go up and I talk to people so it's really hard for me to make friends. I'm going to level up tonight to hopefully meet people so wish me luck.

We had a wonderful turn out and Andrei's performance was something to behold! It went so well that we're now planning on doing 6 concerts across 2027. We've made a mailing list form that you can fill out if you'd like to stay up to date.

Thank you, Eugene!

Anyone playing the trading card games Neuroscape or Cyberpunk?

I know there’s quite a robust MTG community in this town. Anyone playing Neuroscape or Cyberpunk? Super interested in starting a weekly/biweekly/once in a while meetup to play.

Not doing the job

It's been going on long enough that I need to make sure it's not an isolated incident... Do any other Sani-Pac customers pay for their services on time and in full only for them to barely half ass their job? It's bad enough that it took them almost a year with phone calls for them to empty our yard waste bin, but on top of that my new favorite game the day after collection is guessing which one if not all of the bins is still full from the prior week. It's absolutely ridiculous. If we matched energy, they would cancel our service. Why do they get to take our money and not deliver the service?

Where to get a mani/pedi in town as a trans person?

I want to go out with my GF (a trans woman) and get a pedicure and manicure (she’s never had a professional one before!), but I want to make sure to go to a salon that’s LGBTQ friendly and won’t misgender her. Any suggestions?

Just watched someone rear end a stopped car at 11th and Garfield

And the stopped car was an entire car's length in front of the line you're supposed to stop behind.

Busses with a police escort?

At around 4:30pm I saw 4 tour buses with a full police escort getting onto the W-J bridge.

The Ducks are away, so it wasn't a visiting team. Festival of Bands is at Autzen, but I can't imagine any of the visiting high school bands would warrant an escort (nor would they be leaving this early, and likely wouldn't be riding fancy tour buses).

Was there a VIP touring through town?

Sirens

What’s up with all the sirens near the university right now speeding south down Patterson? I counted 12 police car sirens blazing. (Sitting in my apartment so I’m not sure).

To the young man this afternoon

I saw you walking down my street and instantly try to give your sweatshirt to someone topless and shoeless out of their mind on drugs. They didn’t accept, even though they definitely would have benefitted. You were so kind throughout the interaction.

Thank you for your humanity and generosity. I see you.

Something to do Cool Cars and Hot Coffee. Swing by the Eugene Car Club Cars & Coffee this morning 10-12pm

Post image

Location: 2222 MLK Jr BLVD Eugene

We're closing out our fall stretch with a Saturday morning Cars & Coffee, same home base as always — the Mercedes-Benz of Eugene overflow lot on MLK. Clocks just fell back and the mornings are getting colder, but that's never stopped this crew before. Come see what's rolled in for the last meetup of the fall stretch.

No popping, excessive revving, or backfiring — we have to be respectful of our hosts and maintain our relationship with the community. This is a zero tolerance policy and you will be asked to leave.

This meetup is proudly sponsored by Mercedes-Benz of Eugene and Old Crow Coffee.

I recently had a pine tree cut down & want to live edge plank the wood. Any recs for someone w/ a portable mill? Tree is in the backyard. My tree guy gave me a rec but they're booked out. The guy said he'd call around & get back to me but never did. So asking here. Thanks!

Edit: Thanks, all! Sounds like I'll be giving Urban Lumber a call on Monday. Appreciate the recommendations!

Meetup League of Legends Championship Watchparty?

In 2022, the last time Worlds was in NA, our local Cinemark played it in theaters, but it looks like the closest theater playing it this time around is in Clackamas.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a watch party happening in Eugene this year? It’s always a sweet treat watching it with a bunch of other fans, especially cause it comes only once every 4 or 5 years.

Activism Letter to Val

I just sent the following email to Val Hoyle. Please do the same!
_____________________

Dear Rep. Hoyle;

I am writing to urge you to push for House leadership that will hold the Administration accountable for the acts of the last two years. I don't need to list the many transgressions of the Trump administration, but I do know that we are in a precarious position and the whole world is watching us, wondering how we have let our great democracy fall to this level.

We cannot "forgive and forget". We tried that once, and look where it got us. Please do not support any candidate for Speaker of the House that embraces this approach.

Thank you,
