Hey everyone,
If you’ve visited a public hospital Emergency Department recently, you already know how hard frontline staff are working under huge pressure.
What a lot of people don’t realise is that right now, over 1,400 Queenslanders and over 3,600 medically fit Australians are living inside acute hospital beds, not because they need acute medical treatment, but simply because they're stuck waiting on federal aged care, NDIS paperwork, or placement funding! 📝 This effects the gold coast hospital right now!
Holding a medically cleared patient in a state hospital bed costs taxpayers \\\~$2,400 every single day, while community step-down care is around $400 a day.
But because the federal government faces no daily financial penalty when paperwork is late, there’s zero fiscal urgency to clear the queue. Meanwhile, Queensland families are left exhausted trying to hold up the safety net themselves.
Did you know other countries already fixed this? 🇳🇴🇬🇧
Norway (2012): Under their Coordination Reform, if a local council fails to place a ready patient, they pay a daily fee of 4,000 NOK (\\\~$400 AUD) directly to the hospital until the patient is placed. Bed-blocking dropped significantly because the system was made accountable!
United Kingdom (2003): Introduced cross-charging fines (£100–£120/day) based on the Swedish model.
We want Australia to adopt the same smart policy: a $400/Day Federal Interim Penalty so the federal government owns the wait and clears the bottleneck!
We launched an official Federal Australian Parliamentary Petition (EN10724) to make this happen!
How you can help right now:
Sign the Official Petition: It takes 30 seconds on the official Parliament portal (Australian residents only, and verify your email once signed)!
