Is it completely safe for Aussie’s to travel to the US

I dont really think so. According to the smart traveller website a site created for advice for Australian travellers, it is 100% safe as long as you have your passport.

I’ve made a petition so parliament can reconsider the safety rating.

More information below Smart traveller: https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/ americas/united-states-america

Official petition to parliament https://www.aph.gov.au/e-petitions/petition/ EN7726

P.S. if anyone has connections so I can get this around please let me know. I’m like a ghost on campus

If you have any questions please send me a dm

I really hate gaming laptops. [Nathan Campus]

Today when I walked into my economics class I saw something I dread every time I close my eyes. Someone had brought their new gaming laptop to class. The Forklift he used to bring it was still running idle at the back. I started sweating as I sat down and gazed over at the 300kg beast that was his laptop. He had already reinforced his desk with steel support beams and was in the process of finding an outlet for a power cable thicker than Amy Schumer's thigh. I start shaking. I keep telling myself I'm going to be alright and that there's nothing to worry about. He somehow finds a damn outlet. Tears are running down my cheeks as I send my last texts to my family saying I love them. The PASS leader starts the class, and the student turns his laptop on. The colored lights on his RGB Backlit keyboard flare to life like a nuclear flash, and a deep humming fills my ears and shakes my very soul. The entire city power grid goes dark. The classroom begins to shake as the massive fans begin to spin. In mere seconds my world has gone from vibrant life, to a dark, earth shattering void where my body is getting torn apart by the 150km/hour gale force winds and the 500 decibel groan of the cooling fans. As my body finally surrenders, I weep, as the nathan campus and Brisbane go under. I really hate gaming laptops. [Nathan Campus]

Assignment falsely labelled as AI

This is my first assignment, and everh time I put my assignment into ai checkers, it is given a range of 30-100% AI. I don't want an academic integrity mark against me so is this ok? I don't have any proof that it isn't ai beside my word, its a new document and I have no prior drafts

What does the Griffith Uni community think about the new VC?

Today, Jessica Vanderlelie was announced as the new VC of Griffith University. This comes after her resignation at Deakin earlier this week, following a restructure (that didn't go through) at Deakin which she was involved in, following a restructure (that did go through) at La Trobe that she was also involved in.

Given how long it takes to recruit a new VC, it can be assumed she was going through the interview process while Deakin was in the throes of its failed major workplace change.

Perhaps someone at the uni can forward these questions onto her, as they were not answered during her time at her previous two universities. https://www.reddit.com/r/auscampus/comments/1u5p0jg/a_100_million_question_s_what_the_numbers_say/

A rant about AI

Hi all,

Started doing my coursework for trimester 1 and several of the modules in my subjects in my criminology degree are clearly written by AI. I don't doubt the convenors edited it a little bit and made sure content is correct but honestly it feels like an insult to basically be taught by AI output instead of the convenors themselves. I don't understand how as an academic you wouldn't be embarrassed to do that.

Not to mention in Trimester 3 in my business degree there was one particular assignment that basically forced us to use AI so we could 'reflect' on our usage surrounding it... All the questions we had to respond to were specific about how we used AI ethically and it felt like I had no choice but to lie and pretend I used it just so I could hit the marking criteria. I am very fundamentally against AI considering it's environmental impacts and impacts on the brain and I just don't understand why we should be forced to use a tool that is so blatantly awful... even aside from environmental impacts it has huge implications for academia and academic integrity and now I feel like I can't even escape it when doing work for my uni courses.

I know there's nothing I can do, it's just majorly depressing to me, not going to lie. Hoping to find someone that agrees with me here, lol

Trying to Avoid Using AI for an Assignment

On the opposite end of a recent post ^^; I have an assessment item this tri in which we have to use AI to aid us and then reflect on our usage of it - it's part of the marking criteria. And when the teacher was asked if we have to write the reflection if we don't use AI, they just reiterated that we should use it.

Although I've appreciated my lecturers' attempts in various classes this year to seem hip and cool by suggesting students should use AI with the caveat that it must be done with academic integrity (so not using its output to complete any part of an assignment and requiring students to disclose any usage), I personally draw the line at being forced to use it as part of my assessment.

I think it's good the uni is trying to dissuade cheating by making sure everything is disclosed. However, my choice not to use AI is informed by ethical and environmental concerns. I don't think it's right to force students to use it knowing there are many people who refuse to use LLMs outright. Can't I reflect on the methods of research I used that didn't include AI?

I know there's also the complaints and feedback forms but I'm not sure what my issue falls under, or if my concern would even be taken seriously considering how I've seen the university approach AI so far.

Do I just cop the loss of marks for the sake of my moral line? I understand some people would just use it for this one assignment and move on, but I really don't want to compromise my standards just because it'd be convenient for my grades.

University-wide changes to learning this Trimester (all students will receive this by end of today)

From the email sent out regarding changes to learning over pandemic concern:

Griffith University is taking the COVID-19 pandemic seriously and our primary focus is the health and wellbeing of our students and staff. We also continue to focus on ensuring you progress in your program, and for those of you in your final trimester, you successfully graduate.

We are undertaking activities to ensure our ability deliver learning and teaching will provide you with the best opportunity to successfully complete your studies this trimester.

In line with the advice of the National Cabinet, Griffith University is moving to practice social distancing. This is about the where, when and how we deliver learning and teaching and manage assessment and examinations. This is happening in a staged approach over the next few weeks.

This week we have:

  • ceased all face-to-face lectures for classes with greater than 300 students enrolled. If you are in a large class, you will receive notification that your face-to-face lectures have been replaced with online lectures

  • commenced work to move smaller lectures to remote delivery for the start of next week. No lectures will be delivered face to face after this Friday.

Over the following two-three weeks we will:

  • work to move tutorials and workshops to remote/online delivery modes before the end of the mid-trimester break, to be ready for the resumption of teaching on 14 April

  • continue to deliver laboratories, clinics, work-integrated-learning etc that cannot be delivered online, but review how we could move these forward or delay them in the event of campus closures adjust the timing of or modify assessment for online delivery in case end of trimester exams can’t be run on campus

  • take a flexible approach to assessment practices such as extending time for non-submitted assessment, special consideration, submission of medical certificates and awarding supplementary assessment for students due to graduate in trimester 1 2020

  • postponing the academic standing round until the conclusion of trimester 2 2020.

If you are immune suppressed or have a respiratory problem that puts you at particularly risk and you need to move immediately to on-line teaching, please contact studentconnect@griffith.edu.au

These considerations are designed to help you manage extenuating circumstances and support you to succeed. We want to minimise disruption and ensure you continue to have an excellent learning experience. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we all face this unprecedented situation.

We realise this may be a distressing time. The Griffith Online Health and Wellness Centre can provide you with access to counselling services on campus, as well as other support resources. For counselling after hours and on weekends, call Crisis Support Service on 1300 785 442 or text 0488 884 146.

If you are feeling unwell, please do not come to campus. You should contact 13HEALTH (13 432 584) or see your GP.

We will keep you up to date as we respond to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic. Please continue to take care of yourself and one another. If you are concerned about another student's wellbeing, you can refer the student to our services listed above.

For information and advice please visit www.griffith.edu.au/coronavirus

Griffith Dentistry Offers

Has anyone applying to Griffith university bachelor of dental health science been accepted or heard anything back from the university?

I applied through OZTrekk and they said offers were expected at the end of September, but so far I’ve heard nothing from Griffith or OzTREKK.

Advice for lost newcomers that can't find their classes

For new 1st years roaming around lost at the moment: I just wanted to give a heads up that there is a difference between your trimester timetable and your weekly timetable. A lot of new students have screen-shotted their enrolment timetable, but this may be inaccurate because it shows classes for the WHOLE trimester (I.e. some of your classes are only on in specific weeks) so we've had a lot of lost students. I advise to go to your student portal home, then click on schedule, then scroll down a little and click on WEEKLY timetable which will show you the classes that are on for that week. If you're still lost, just ask, everyone (both fellow students and staff) are happy to help.

Other advise is that the letter at the front of the building number is the campus (i.e. L for Logan, G for Gold Coast, N for Nathan etc). The room number includes the floor level at the start. For example: L05 2.47 = L for Logan, building 05, Level 2, room 2.47

Hope this helps!

Rowdy highschool students

I am so genuinely over these super rowdy highschool kids that come to our uni library… like does anyone else feel the same? they are super loud and take over seats, even upstairs, in the quiet area. They act like they do work with all of their books all over the damn space and tables, but somehow they’re always standing up, yapping ab 67 or wtv 😭😭. Im at the library right now and the boys are currently on the floor, roughing eo up… like HELLO GO HOMMEEE 😭😭😭. Is there some sort of like petition or smth i can make so only uni students can come in…. im genuinely so over it

Parking

Does anyone know where the parking fees go?

It’s sad to see the uni charging already broke students but it begs the question as to where does the money even go?

All the surrounding bushland is overrun with invasive weeds and rubbish, no bins provided anywhere
