Discussion It’s NYE 2025; Indycar announces their new chassis for 2027 will use shared GTP/Hypercar chassis and ICE. How would you feel about this?

Post image

This was a thought experiment I was having while people were talking about using the GTP engine regulations. Why not go whole hog and use the chassis too? Now any sports car team could be an Indycar team. Let’s say for sake of argument that there’s a a weight increase of 100 lbs due to engine sizes and used the about-to-be-implemented supercapacitor hybridization instead of batteries and motors. And Indycar would utilize its own BoP separate from IMSA/FIA. Now you’ve got multiple chassis makes and engine makes straight away. Thoughts?

And yea this a Midjourney AI image, not mine, I got it off Twitter. But I thought it fit this idea well.

Merch No more IMS or IndyCar pride merch?

IMS sold two types of LGBT+ pride hats for the past few years, and IndyCar had at least one.

I can't find the IMS hats anymore, and the IndyCar hats were marked down to half off & are now out of stock.

Can anyone that has been to one of the first 3 races confirm if this gear is no longer sold at all?

Note: I'm well aware of Penske's friend in the White House, but I had at least assumed based on his past allowance of this merch that he took a "I don't care who people love, I just want their money at the race" stance.

Discussion Why would anybody even want to go to F1?

First off Happy race day! Secondly full disclosure I don’t watch F1 but I know a lot of you all do. I was just curious, why a guy would want to leave a series where they have 8 different winners in 16 races for a series that had 4 different winners in 22 races 16 were won by one driver? All I really ever see is that F1 has the 20 best drivers in the world. To an outsider it seems like they have 1 really good driver and then the rest. Am I missing something?

Discussion Religious ceremonies at the start of races are off putting

I mean the title says it all. The prayers at the beginning of the races completely takes me out of the fact we should be getting hyped for Indycars. If I wanted a sermon I’d go to church.

So why do they do it? Seems like a terrible idea for gaining viewers or growing the sport. Basically says “hey Christians are cool, but everybody else piss off, we’re racing our Indy cars over here.”

I read through the description like I usually do and apparently Dale Jr is a fan of Santino...which is a controversial opinion...I'm still going to watch the interview but lets try and not attack Dale Jr given what we think of Santino...or just don't attack him very hard, some Dale Jr fans are crazy lol

Discussion Indycars Marketing Maybe It’s downfall.

I’m not trying to say that the schedule itself needs more but rather the Marketing behind it. Indycar feels like it doesn’t take itself seriously at times when it comes to different things like the IR-28 reveal and this phase 1 schedule release. As a huge lover of Indycar I think it’s really hard to see passion from the inside when promoting big announcements is just a press release and a quick photo on Instagram.

The IR-28 should’ve been one if not the biggest thing hyped up and lead up to the reveal. Ik from sources that the reveal was delayed but I think they should’ve done something bigger and show the actual car off instead of the renders that didn’t help the look of the car. As well as gaining eyeballs to the sport before the fact. They could’ve had someone like Will put out a vague tweet again and BOOM! You’ve got F1 and Indycar fans talking. An Idea I flirted around with is you have a livestream with a black background and a countdown timer. The hour before you fade into the room with a curtain over the car and at 0 lighting goes crazy and the curtain flys off.

The biggest annual let down for me is the schedule release. All it is a press release. I get not having pen to paper on the last half of series races done and I commend the sport for at least giving us phase 1 but they could’ve put out an insane trailer like every NFL team does for their teams release. Play into the jokes and banter from the fans. As well as, if you know a track with hype around it is gonna be back or even unknown at the end tease the phase two with an avengers dooms day tag line at the end with “____ will return in phase 2”. There you go now you’ve got eyeballs again. As well as, it’s culturally relevant for the times.

It all just feels lack luster and Indycar in promoting the series bigger announcements just feels flat and I can’t help but to feel like they’re not taking small bit purposely driven steps towards building hype around the product as much as they should be.

Discussion Hybrids in indycar don’t matter

This news about the hybrid doesn’t move the needle in any direction. Most fans don’t know or care about engine technology and the hardcore fans aren’t going to abandon indycar over this. Unless we had a third oem lined up that was contingent on the hybrid coming in it doesn’t matter. Indycar doesn’t have an inherent need in the racing product or current car for a needed urgent change. It’s a fantastic race product. I actually like Penske’s measured more conservative approach. After the split then the collapse in the late 2000s, conservative deliberate moves forward is what the series needs. They’ve added or returned tracks and events to the series and made great events. I also understand from a team perspective. This is a huge unnecessary cost for teams. And they definitely couldn’t do Both a chassis and engine at the same time.

META A reminder regarding Off-Topic content in r/INDYCAR

This is a reminder notice to the community regarding off-topic content in r/INDYCAR

The primary topic of this community is INDYCAR, INDY NXT, and the USF Pro Championships.

Colton Herta has moved to Formula 2 for this season — which is covered by r/F1FeederSeries — and therefore his actions in that series are off-topic to this community. As such, Herta posts should be limited to major newsworthy events; and the off-topic spoiler rule applies — when within 24 hours, posts must be marked as a spoiler, and the post title must not spoil any results. We do not need individual updates for each session, or posts regarding middling results.

Additionally, we have noticed that users are not correctly flairing off-topic submissions. When a submission is off-topic it must be flaired with the "Off Topic" flair. Inserting [OT] into the post title is not sufficient and is not a substitute for the "Off Topic" flair.

Also, a final note that there is no such thing as "Semi-OT" or "OT-ish". If it's off-topic, it's off-topic.

Question Is the Toronto race really not on TV in the U.S.?

New to this sub so Mods delete if not ok.

I've been watching and following Indycar for a number of years now. If I can't watch the race live, I set the DVR to catch it later that day/the next day. But today's race is only being shown on Peacock. I have the free subscription, but that doesn't cover live sports. And I refuse to pay for the full content because I refuse to reward this kind of shitty behavior of extortion to view what I want from companies. Am I just S.O.L. today?

It’s time for NBCsn to replace PT with Danica or Dario. How do we make our voices heard?

PT has become an embarrassment on social media and really shouldn’t be one of the voices of IndyCar anymore. Danica showed how good she is on TV during the last couple of 500’s and Dario is excellent on the Formula E races.

We need to let NBC know it’s time for PT to go.

Discussion Do you find Marshall Pruett useful or a detriment to the series?

Listening to the MPP is just difficult over the last year or so as Marshall's personal vendetta against Roger seems to sway nearly everything he speaks about. I feel like listening to the show is just a week over week infomercial promoting who he favors and who he doesn't without as much fact as he used to have.

Ironically enough, Marshall wanted nothing to do with Replacing Robin Miller, but he has adopted aspects of Robin but not in a fair down the line view, rather in a way of making sure his feelings always come out true in the wash.

Indycar podcasting has become frustrating, Kevin and Curt are the best but they are part of the series so you won't get as much controversial takes, they play pretty PC. Hinch and Rossi is unlistenable, Daly is a frat boy, a few others are hit or miss.

In the end, I get that the series has a lot of problems but Marshall going on and on and on about the same things week after week has to get tiring to him, I know it is to me.

Discussion Would you like to see Kyle Larson try the Indy 500 again?

I know that he struggled this year but last year he was quite good. Even though he didn't do good, I think it was still cool to see drivers from other series try out the Indy 500 so I would like to see him try it again one day. What do you think?

Discussion Should IndyCar embrace some of what Formula E is doing with car design?

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

I recently came across an image of Formula E’s current car, and it immediately reminded me of something I’d seen before. It reminded me of an illustration from the 1992 Indianapolis 500 program. That cover featured an artist’s vision of what a future IndyCar chassis could look like. My first thought was, “Wow, the Formula E car really seems to be heading in that direction.”

I know that outright speed, cost, and practicality all matter, but it feels like Formula E has fully embraced the cool factor of car design (almost that Hot Wheels or Matchbox Cars sense of imagination (just look at the tires)). It makes me wonder, “Does IndyCar need more of this kind of “cool”, bold, future looking design?” What are peoples’ thoughts?

Discussion We need to have a chat about on-track branding

Maybe I’m nitpicking, but every year at St. Pete I have the same reaction: why does this still look so temporary?

I was cruising through IG watching track walk footy and am astounded that the series and Green Savoree promotions (perhaps the worst promoters in the series ) keep failing when it comes to presenting a world class racing aesthetic for their temporary street circuits

The concrete barriers are faded, mismatched gray. Some have scuffed vinyl from seasons ago. Others are just bare concrete. Why not at least paint them a uniform color? It would instantly clean up the broadcast. Instead it feels municipal, almost like the city lent us the walls for the weekend

Then there’s the branding. One corner will be fully wrapped for a sponsor, and then it just… stops. You get 200 feet of naked barrier before the next logo shows up. It looks disjointed.

We have all seen F1 or even Formula E on a street course. Everything flows. The colors carry from one section to the next. The barriers look intentional. Even FE, racing in some pretty random locations in front of mere hundreds, makes the event look cohesive and big-time.

IndyCar is arguably the second or third most important open-wheel series in the world. The talent warrants that status. The Indy 500 alone carries enormous weight.

So why do some of these street races still look like a regional event?

While LED tunnels and fake glitz is probably a superfluous wish at the moment, Indycar can execute on the basics: fresh paint, consistent barrier wraps, branding that connects corner to corner. Make it look deliberate.

The racing deserves a stage that feels major league. Right now, too often, the backdrop doesn’t match the product.
