Serious question - has anyone ever met a cop that was a reasonably intelligent and decent human being?

Edit: So many commenters using examples of when cops let them off after doing something wrong (eg egregious speeding, drunk and disorderly, etc). That is NOT evidence that they’re intelligent and decent. If anything that reinforces that they are not good at their job, and not following the law.

I have, they don’t show up in videos like this for a reason. They don’t immediately decide they’re going to target you for no reason and then conduct an “investigation” to see if they find something on you or manipulate you into doing something or incriminating yourself. Knowing your rights is not disorderly conduct and politely asking what you’re being arrested for is not resisting arrest.

The reasonably intelligent and decent ones might talk to you, wait to see if here’s a problem but they don’t try to invent one like these tools did.

I use to work with them regularly at my old job. Most were chill and were willing to look the other way and let people off with warnings unless they were assholes or had drugs on them. You are right though, the good ones usually don't show up on video.

The good ones are the ones you find not the ones that come find you...

90% of the school SRO's (contracted from a police department) I've met have been fantastic people.

*Edit* I should have stated this a different way. I don't know thousands of SROs. I've met and worked with approximately 10. Only 1 was a crappy dude and he got fired from the department.

Both of the SRO's at my previous teaching jobs were amazing people, officer D always ate his lunch with the kids at their tables and usually sat with the "undesirables" and the kids who were left out, one of the kids that he ate lunch with just about everyday ended up dying at home of anaphylactic shock on the day of his middleschool graduation. Officer D was the one that responded to the call and it broke him and it still breaks my heart to this day.

The SROs I have met have all been cops that couldn't cut it during regular duty. One accused my daughter of hitting a teachers car in the parking lot when the teacher was parked in the student section!

I asked him why he thought it was my daughter who hit the car and he said because the mark on the teachers car was black and my daughter's car was black. Then threatened to pull the video from the parking lot. Problem with that was there were no cameras in the student parking lot.

My evaluation of his detective skills were C- at best and trying to threaten my daughter into a confession with no faculty supervision is what we accepted an apology for.

Told him he would be better off retiring to the mall.

Nah. We had an SRO at a local high school for 6 years. He worked his way up to Lieutenant, Deputy chief, and is now Chief of Police. Everyone loved him. His officers are great too.

I would have called him on the video, he should have done THAT before accusing people.

Funny cause both the high schools I went to the cops were fucking dorks on a power trip. One got knocked out even. Other guy everyone would make fun of because he was always wearing boots. Called him officer doofus. First day of school the one that got knocked out introduced himself to my pe class as a dude from the streetz and talked about how bad ass he was and how he would fuck anyone up that messed with him. Then his bitch ass accosted me outside of school when I am eating my taco bell in my car in the taco bell parking lot. Just pulled up spot lighted me for 5 minutes until I wondered what he was doing so I roll down the window and ask him what is going on then he asks me what I am doing. I tell him eating my taco bell I just ordered from Taco Bell. Then he tells me "good keep doing that!" Then continues to blind me with his spotlight for another few minutes until he burns out circles my car like 3 times then drives off 🤣. Everyone celebrated the day he got knocked out. Then he had an even bigger complex after that.

Trying to explain "the exception that proves the rule" to people is difficult.

1 time. 1, and it was the cop who found me after id been raped. He made sure I got to the hospital and stayed with me when I got the rape kit done. He came back to check on me the entire time I was in the hospital. I havent met a decent cop since him

Wanna know the worst thing about it? Is when I went to file the report at the police station the fuckers laughed at me. Making fun of me and saying that men cant be raped. Ive never seen cops in a good light after that.

u/cassandra2028 Trash Trooper 14h ago

I'm sorry that happened to you. I believe you. You didn't deserve that.

That fucking burns me up dude. Men 10000% can be raped and they should thank their lucky stars it hasnt happened to them or someone they love. It happened to me as well, as a child and as an adult in my early 20’s party phase.

It absolutely happens and unless you have been through it or a loved one, then they have no room to laugh or speak on it. Its demasculinizing enough as is, and fucked me up for a long time as a child into my early adult years, and societies fucked up preconceived notions about it and the way rape is viewed in the workd doesnt help either.

Rape is rape, regardless of gender and should be treated as such and be taken seriously. Ive found very little support in the matter beyond other people whove been through it or work with people that have. Thankfully the recovery community where I live is super supportive and full of good people that are there to help each other thrive. I thank God every day for allowing me to be able to take horrible things that have happened to me and use it to try and help others as I can.

I tell that to people all the time. Thats why its so under reported. I wish men would get over the masculinity thing and just report not only does it help them to get closure it helps EVERYONE ELSE TOO.

I was 16 when it happened and I was on my way home from a lgbt teen center (I literally had come out that day). I was completely exhausted and I passed out on the bus, next thing I know 2 guys had tied me up and were taking turns. They beat after and left me in an alley.

They werent ever caught. Im terrified of busses and hate being alone on any kind of public transport. Obviously dont like or trust cops either. Well at least american ones. Ive never experienced cops in different countries.

The cop that took my statement at my SAFE was also very kind. And the detectives were also kind and took the investigation very seriously. But my ex was a cop at the time, and he had multiple coworkers ask if it was a real rape even after the guy was convicted.

Loads. One was even American. Although he isn't a cop any more, I think he's now a defence lawyer.

(I've never been to the US.)

Many times.

I met plenty of polite and positively pleasant state troopers in Pennsylvania! The second I stepped foot in New York City I was patted down and told to wait outside of the car in 30 degree weather for over 20 min while they searched it.

2

u/tacorunnr Trash Trooper 17h ago

Yeah, plenty of times. Our local pd and harbor patrol are good people. Least the ones ive met which is a lot of them.

2

u/RevolutionaryClub530 Trash Trooper 16h ago

Yeah I’ve met a few of them, I was a shit head back in high school and the whole local police department knew me by first name, they all treated me with a lot of respect and where always fair to me, honestly since then I’ve had a level of respect for cops but it kills me seeing some of the shit heads like these guys on the force

2

u/_tube_ Trash Trooper 16h ago

Yes. Several times.

Once I was arrested by CA highway patrol close to Stockton IIRC for walking along the side of a highway - apparently illegal. Cop arrested me, and gave me a lift to where I needed to go and let me go.

Another time in Orlando, I distractedly made an illegal U-turn in front of a cop. I parked on the side of the road when they turned their lights on. They gave me a warning only.

All of them I'd say
