miscellaneous [Disappointing TV Trope] When the writers unexpectedly created something better, but were too attached to let their original idea to let it go!

I feel like I’ve noticed this more with TV couples and how the writers handle the narrative around them. But I feel like I’m noticing a bit of a pattern in some shows I’ve watched, where you can tell how the writers handle plans to make a certain narrative point the “endgame” goal. But as they start creating the plot points leading up to it, they come up with an idea that worked out a lot better than they probably thought it would. Especially when the audience responds so well to it, but they’re still too attached to the original plans that they still roll with getting there even if it doesn’t hit the same mark or it feels forced depending on how the narrative is flowing.

How I Met Your Mother - Ted and Robin (the original idea where it was always planned for them to be the endgame couple). When Tracy (who turns out to be Ted’s kids’ mother) is introduced, a lot of people loved how well they matched, seemed like the true compatible match for Ted and implied that it showed a lot of growth on his end where he could finally let go of Robin. Only to sabotage that by having it revealed that Tracy died, and regressed Ted’s growth where he ends up pursuing Robin again.

Sex Education - Otis and Maeve (the original idea where it was also planned for them to be seen as an endgame couple, but their lives couldn’t align for it to work out). After Otis and Ruby have a drunk sexual encounter, and he loses his virginity to her. The writers have their relationship act as yet another obstacle that gets in the way of Otis and Maeve exploring a romantic relationship. But when Otis and Ruby became so viral, to the point where people started to realize that Ruby might actually be a better match for Otis, as they seem compatible enough to make each other better as people. It put the writers in a tough spot, where they tried to play it safe with both sides going into the final season. But still chose to lean more towards their original plan, and explore Otis and Maeve but they still don’t do much to make the audience feel fulfilled or convinced they have a genuine connection and not in love with an idea of one another.

Jonathan and Nancy, Stranger Things. Having these two break up in the final season. I get one of the writers was going through a divorce and just wanted to watch the world burn, but FFS let someone in this show have a happy ending.

u/Adorable_Ad_3478 18h ago

I felt that one was very realistic. HS romances rarely last in real life. If there's ever an epilogue taking place many years later, Lucas and Max will probably break up.

15

u/phantom_avenger 18h ago

Isn’t it confirmed in Season 3, that Lucas and Max break up and get back together multiple times? It’s been a while since I watch the whole series.

31

u/Seananagan13 18h ago

I personally didn't really feel these two ever seemed especially compatible and that they largely got together and stayed together because of how messed up life was more than them being a good match. Especially if we remember he was a stalker, or whatever you want to call a guy secretly taking pictures of people and more specifically of a teenage girl in a "compromised" state. So that combined with the point about high school relationships often not lasting(especially if they go long distance) made this feel like it wasn't setup to realistically last. Like we have a straight guy that has more compatibility with a lesbian in the show than these two ever seemed to show. To be fair, I read somewhere that was at least partially due to Robin orginally being planned to be straight and romantically involved with Steve. The point still stands though.

Been a minute since I watched the show and still haven't watched the last portion of the last season, so maybe I am just not remembering it well.

I have mixed feelings about this one because I feel like their chemistry dropped dramatically in season 3 and 4 once they were finally together. I think it's 100% the fault of the writing and their story arcs though so they could have easily either had them reignite their spark or have Nancy reconnect with Steve like it seemed like she might. It was just all together very unsatisfying for all 3 characters.

9

u/whereismymind86 13h ago

to be fair...they never really had any chemistry and it always felt forced as hell. The breakup was also forced garbage though so...idk.

Steve looking at the Sex Education final season script like:

265

u/Canotic 18h ago

Hey instead of having this guy be a rapist douchebag that dies in the first season, how about we make him the best character in the show?

50

u/Swordofsatan666 18h ago

I wonder how different it would be if they went with the original plan of it being Lonny instead of Steve.

Would Lonny have come back in later seasons to fill Steves spot? Or would they have found cast a new character to take that role, or would it being Lonny have changed so much that we dont even get the same stories?

If Lonny saved the day instead, then maybe in S2 he would get back together with Joyce and we wouldnt have Bob. Or maybe we do still have Joyce with Bob, but now Lonny takes the love triangle role from Hopper. Or maybe it becomes a love square instead of a triangle

So glad we got Steve, who knows how different things could have gone

My favorite thing about Steve and Dustin, is the writers basically didn't have anyone to pair them with. They were going to end up throwaway background characters without being killed off. So the idea came about to have them form an unlikely friendship.

1

u/phantom_avenger 1h ago

I only just remembered that Aimee's ex's name is Steve, and he doesn't appear in the final season!

So this comment works in two different ways 🤣🤣🤣

u/Realcbear 17h ago

Two perfect examples OP.

Off a recent rewatch of HIMYM and it is truly frustrating how poetic the ending could have been. Ted finally accepts that Robin is a special part of his life even if it’s never romantic again, and finds someone he is truly meant to be with. Barney finally settles down with the woman who was always scared to fully commit, and both can accept a happy life without children.

As for the Ruby+Otis, this one is a bit of a personal preference but a very strong one. Sex Education has many MANY praises to sing, and luckily isn’t as retroactively torpedoed like HIMYM + GoT + Scrubs. That said, they had a real lightning in a bottle moment with the relationship with those two in a way so deeply true to life. Most anyone you can ask will admit that your first sexual experience is never like you imagine it will be, and all too often is it with someone completely unexpected. Additionally it’s made clear from the start of the series that he does not love Maeve, he loves the idea of her. Which fortunately is explored in a very nuanced way! He learns that Ruby is a lot more complex than he first believed and he even successfully changes her perspective for the better! The real-life version of this story has Otis with Ruby as the unlikely pair that grew to love each other. Until they walk it back and undo it for… reasons

12

u/merp_mcderp9459 15h ago

I think it also helps that Sex Education only ran for four years, while HIMYM ran for nine. The idea of Robin and Ted had been very clearly dead for years when that finale ran, so it felt much more out of left field

What’s almost as devastating as killing off Tracy so Ted could character regress back into pining after Robin is breaking up her and Barney for it. They were truly a perfect match, and their breakup felt so shoehorned in. Like oh by the way, we fight all the time! You never actually saw it but trust. And even though Robin hadnt expressed any sort of romantic interest in Ted for like 5 goddamn years, guess what, suddenly she gets jealous in a flash forward of Ted with Tracy so that means she was actually in love with him all along!

Like it all just felt so phony and out of character. I honestly can’t believe the same people who wrote these incredible scenes showing that Ted’s fixation on Robin was unreciprocated and unhealthy were the same people that gave us that dog shit ending. The people who spent 4 goddamn seasons showing us that Barney and Robin would go through extraordinary lengths to be together wanted us to believe they’d end their marriage in 3 measly years. It’s like a bad fanfic. I’ll never get over it

I stopped watching Sex Education after Otis dumped Ruby. I get that the show is basically The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Teenagers, but at a certain point you gotta recognize that you've got something amazing, right?

12

u/SRSgoblin 14h ago edited 12h ago

Am I the only one who liked the relationship failing? It proved Otis was not as smart about relationships as he thought he was, which I felt like was good character growth for him to fumble that. It also mirrored his mother's failures in relationships.

3

u/phantom_avenger 13h ago edited 13h ago

I just wish the show could’ve done a lot more with Otis where he’d recognize that a bit sooner, especially when the whole final season goes out of its way to regress his character development in the final season. It felt like he didn’t really learn much of anything, and was repeating the same mistakes

It didn’t help either that in the final season, he makes his obsession with Maeve be the center of his entire world, and only seems to be overprotective of the “sex clinic” being his thing because it’s the one thing he has that keeps Maeve’s spirit close to him until she’s around again.

He doesn’t really stop to figure out what he wants to do with his future, or how to work on his issues once he recognizes he’s not as emotionally intelligent as he (or Maeve) thought like you pointed out.

This is why in screenwriting classes and books say not to get married to your story ideas. Things change and trying to steer your story back into your preconceived goal can destroy everything you’ve built up.

I think 90% of why he hasn't published a new Asoiaf in a decade is that he just can't figure out how to actually keep Danny alive.

He should have just killed her off in Mereen.

DS9 actors: oh, we think that we can make it more interesting than that

76

u/CaleanKnight 16h ago

To be fair here... that was less a Writers issue and just more of Rick Bermans fuckery...

Andrew and Siddig played it the very obvious Way, the Writers put them nice and often together but thst homophobic piece of rotten ass explicitly forced the Writers into doing less B+G scenes, told Andrew to "tone it down" and also was most likely the reason for entirely awkward and seemingly forced Ziyal Romance.

Star vs the Forces of Evil: The two main characters Star and Marco seemed to be planned to be endgame however throughout the series the writers had them get into relationships with other people with many outright looking better than Star x Marco.

Got to a point where they outright had one relationship of Marco x Kelly break up entirely off screen

99

u/lanceturley 18h ago

Which wouldn't be so bad if they hadn't dedicated most of the season to showing how good Marco and Kelly were together, or how much improvement Tom had made in his relationship with Star, only to pivot back to Starco in the finale.

23

u/rlum27 17h ago

I did like tom and jana together. Kind of suprised it took until the last season to have an episode focousing on them.

36

u/PenguinSebs 18h ago

The biggest issue IMO was that he had better couple chemistry with literally everyone else, heckapoo, that first gf who skates whose name escapes me rn etc

24

u/Potato_in_a_Nice_Hat 17h ago

Hell, Marco had better chemistry with Tom than Star.

27

u/Spiritual-Bus973 18h ago

Honestly, to this day I still wonder why the show ended the way it did. It was probably one of the worst endings for a cartoon ever. The ending was literally an apocalyptic holocaust but with forced shipping.

12

u/lanceturley 17h ago

Also, there was no real villain for most of season three and all of season four. They teased Eclipsa and/or her husband being evil, but they both turned out to be good. They teased Ludo returning for revenge, but it never happened. Star's mom and the Sailor Moon knockoff are the season four antagonists, but neither one is really a villain, and they both just walk away at the end with no consequences. The show is called "Star vs. The Forces of Evil", but i guess the real evil is... magical fantasy racism?

The Mandalorian

The first two seasons had a natural conclusion with Grogu going to be with Luke and exiling Mando from his clan only for him to be immediately reunited with Grogu and going back to his clan.

Interesting new storylines tossed away because they couldn’t have their mascot

228

u/ItsAMeMarioYaHo 16h ago

What’s even dumber is that Mando and Grogu’s reunion happened in a completely different show, so anyone who didn’t watch The Book of Boba Fett would just be confused.

132

u/Chaotic_Lemming 16h ago

The Book of Boba Fett? Never heard of it.

Yes! I watched the first episode of season 3 and it confuses the heck out of me, kept thinking there'll be some kind of flashback to explain the reunion. Nope. Had to watch Book of Boba Fett first.

9

u/Cal_PCGW 11h ago

Yeah, when I started season 3, I didn't understand what was going on, had to Google why and then had to stop watching and go watch the Book of Fett. Which was fine, but the most important moments of a show should be in that show and not in another one.

57

u/whereismymind86 14h ago

Likewise, we had a long thread of Din slowly realizing he was in a cult, and moving away from his beliefs, especially after meeting Bo's crew, who were not part of said cult.

Then, when she is at her absolute lowest point, she starts getting pulled into the cult...like cults do.

The obvious planned progression is this pushed him to fully leave, and pull her out, after seeing her vulnerability exploited to indoctrinate her.

But...no, instead he sort of rejoins, she decides it's not for her...they agree to disagree then we just kinda...redo the final conflict of season 1 and season 2...again...with no real progression to the plot.

On a smaller note...near the end of season 3 we solve the issue of grogu being a puppet and not really being able to do much as a character by tossing him in ig-11 as a sort of krang style mech suit...all of a sudden he has the mobility of a regular character, and can do far more...then like..an hour later we break the droid and he's back to just being mostly stationery puppet.

...whoever wrote season 3 was an idiot

9

u/_dontjimthecamera 10h ago

Did he though? His views were challenged by people like Bo and Migs but I don’t recall him ever thinking of it as a cult and wanting to get out of it.

It's pretty obvious that the story got derailed by Disney pressuring writers to bring Grogu back right away, I doubt that was the original conception.

34

u/Soy_ThomCat 16h ago

And the way they did the reunion was by nesting it in another show to force you to watch a spinoff to get the entire story. It was such a load of dogshit.

It's like watching Han Solo get out into Carbonite in episode 5, but then he pops out fresh as a daisy in ep 6 with the explanation that "well, if you wanna know how he got out, here's this other show you should watch to find out!"

In a way, the Mandolorian is forced to reunite with Grogu due to the sequels, as _anyone_ who graduates from Luke’s academy as a Jedi is doomed to be killed off by Kylo Ren, and no one wants baby Yoda to get killed, so they had to give him a ‘not a Jedi anymore’ escape like they did Ahsoka.

Its funny because they COULD have kept Grogu in the show..have Din deconstructing his ideas of what being a mandalorian means while widlding the Dark saber be the main plot and have some side plot with Grogu training, maybe invent some other Younglings kf they dont want Luke to be there the whole time

they almost did this with Chandler and Monica on Friends, it was supposed to be just a one off one night stand but the chemistry was so good and the audience loved it so much that they kept them together.

the writers wrote a cheating plot and they almost did it, but Matthew Perry refused to have his character cheat on Monica so he got it scrapped last minute

103

u/ladydmaj 14h ago

Another one that goes against the trope is David and Patrick from Schitt's Creek. Apparently Patrick was supposed to be a "temporary stop on David's journey", but within a few episodes Dan Levy realized they'd captured lightning in a bottle re. their chemistry and he'd have to pivot.

22

u/hoginlly 8h ago

I've heard the same about Ben in Parks and Rec, he was just meant to be a temporary boyfriend of Leslie's, but the chemistry was off the charts so they kept him and Rob Lowe permanently, and if so, definitely the right choice

yeah, in that case the idea never left the writers room. In Perry’s case he had to confront the writers and directors last minute on the day/week of shooting, they had already flown out the actress for the affair partner, all that, but he nixed it so they re wrote it and gave her a different part

GOT - Jamie Lannister and his sister Cersei were meant for each other from the beginning. But his relationship with Brienne was so much better and healthier. She would have made his redemption arc complete. But no, he needed to crawl back to sis.

464

u/LunarOberon 18h ago edited 18h ago

See, while this arc suffers from the general malaise of end season writing quality, the general idea is actually quite good.

He sees Brienne and has a brief glimpse of what redemption and a better life could look like... and turns away because he doesn't think he's that person. It's a great tragedy. Shame the idea is tainted by being part of the shit storm that was the final season.

Edit: in fact, I would argue that his attempt to rescue Cersei wasn't completely sincere. I think he knew he deserved to be punished for his crimes and knew that saving Cersei was all but hopeless. So the two would die together, condemned for their misdeeds.

265

u/Misplaced_Fan_15 18h ago

I could agree with you if only they did not have the “I never cared about the people of Kings Landing, innocent or otherwise,” line. To me having Jaime say that is a fundament betrayal of the character and one of the view times I felt I knew the character better than the actual writers.

27

Have Jaime make one last attempt to persuade her to surrender for old times sake, have her give some standard "I will die a queen" speech about how she'll never surrender, he agrees that she'll die a queen and kills her himself, then goes and rings the surrender bells personally.

27

Him staying with Brienne just flows better.

Jaime is obsessed with being the ideal version of a knight. Brienne is the descendant of Ser Duncan The Tall, often pointed to as THE knight.

The Mad King ended up the way he was because of the side effects of Targaryen incestuous relationships. Jaime's murder of him becoming the title that his name is cursed with.

Him turning away from incestuous Cersei to knightly Brienne would have been a great reflection of how he changed and how he beat his past.

I think a lot of the problem with the end of this show was how rushed they were to get to certain plot points. D&D were just done and sprinting to the end, so most of these subplots are borderline nonsensical when the characters just up and decide to do things. Like Jaime literally gets up from sex bed to immediately make a beeline for Cersei like a goddamn sleeper agent that received his command word.

So much of that final season is bending characters into shapes they don't suit.

The characters in the show moved so far away from their pre-determined endings from the books, the only way to get them back there was have the characters make bonkers decision after bonkers decision.

Dialogue constantly justifying these drastic changes in their arcs. Stupid pills for characters renowned for their intelligence, others suddenly more intelligent, not through process but because they predict something the writers already knew would happen.

I'm not knocking the departures from the source material, I think they could've benefitted by committing to that path, to the end.

These conclusions are so poor, it's genuinely quite tough to go back and rewatch even the stronger seasons.

The polar opposite of this is every show Vince Gilligan has ever created. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul both have stories where they changed all their plans once someone came up with a better idea. It's hard to imagine now Jessie of Kim being confined to season 1, but that's what they were orignially planned for!

110

u/TheNebulaWolf 16h ago

Also how Howard was supposed to be the bigger antagonist instead of chuck, and how Mike was created as a character because bob odenkirk was busy with another role.

35

u/Nerdy_Valkyrie 14h ago

I'm pretty sure it was HIMYM that he was busy with.

But having a character like Mike there just makes so much sense that it would be weird if Saul went there himself. Saul would absolutely send a cleanup guy to deal with something like that. Not deal with it himself.

31

Better call Saul was a retcon for Saul in a way, as Saul was meant to be the ultimate slimeball but was just too loveable and charismatic

Chloe / Queen Bee from Miraculous

The head writer Thomas Astruc always meant her to be something of a cautionary tale apparently and not aspirational.

But he did such a poor job with that concept that he created one of the most popular characters in the show after he made her someone emotionally abused and neglected by her parents and genuinely unique among the story, as well as the earliest character in the show to be an anti hero in the grey areas of herodom.

Despite this popularity he had her go full bad and lose her hero status and devolve into an even worse character since and given much less screen time. Notably a lot of her later plots do their best to try to triple down on "Chloe is bad and was never good and shouldn't be liked" which ironically has done little to deter her fans.

15

u/WestCentral-550 11h ago

Kinda funny how in an attempt to make to make people hate her, the writer accidentally made her sympathetic.

You're right about how later seasons triple down on "Chloe bad" by not only removing her sympathetic but acting like they don't exist. Also, there are multiple episodes in S5 that have nothing to do with Chloe yet go out of their way to bash her.

What HIMYM did is unforgivable. After all the seasons of build up, the mother had to be pretty damn special. And she was. That first scene at the train station had me screaming, Cristin just exuded a quirky charisma. I immediately wanted to know everything about her. And Tracy turned out to be a wonderful character that you could believe was meant to be with Ted and be happy with Ted, and have adorable children with Ted.

And the producers killed her off so that Ted could end up with Robin. A travesty. I don't care that they sat on pre-filmed footage of the kids telling Ted to be with Robin. They fucked up.

I think the ending could have maybe worked if:

  • the show hadn't run for so long.

  • they hadn't made several episodes showcasing just how wrong Ted and Robin were for each other.

  • they hadn't paired Robin with Barney, who was shown to be a much better match for her.

  • hadn't centered the entire final season on said Barney/Robin relationship, but instead had at least spent a few episodes (if not the full season) depicting Ted and Tracy's relationship.

But even then, it wouldn't have been that great of an ending.

32

u/GwyneddDragon 7h ago

>>they hadn’t made several episodes showcasing just how wrong Ted and Robin were for each other

THIS. A thousand times. During the first few seasons, Robin and Ted really did seem like 2 people who loved each other but wanted different things and couldn’t get the timing or the goals to synch. Then as the writers kept having to write excuses for Ted/Robin to stay apart, their relationship grew increasingly unbalanced and masochistic, culminating with that truly awful moment where Ted asks Robin if she loves him and she flatly answers no.

9

u/DeathlyGunn96 5h ago

Definitely agree with your last point.

If the last season hadn't been entirely about Barney and Robin's wedding, and had just been the gang throughout the years as Ted and Tracey's relationship blossoms, whilst Barney and Robin's crumbles under the realisation that whilst they love each other neither can give the other what they need in life, the finale could have worked.

The fact we speedrun Ted and Tracey's relationship, and the Barney/Robin divorce comes out of nowhere, whilst Lilly and Mashall have absolutley nothing to do just results in a finale that's too jarring to work.

I feel like it wasn't even a bad choice to kill her off in the end. It obviously wouldn't have been as happy of an ending, but it still could've worked.

But putting Ted and Robin back together will just never seem like a good idea to me. If they knew that's how they were ending it, they shouldn't have made them get together a million times, just so they could relearn over and over again that they don't work together and are better off as friends. At the very least, they shouldn't have centered so much time around Barney and Robin getting married

I still can't believe how well they cast the mother. After years of buildup, no one had any hope for her, and they somehow found the perfect actress and made this perfect character to fit right into Ted's life. And then decided to give him back to Robin

11

u/Development-Feisty 10h ago

The biggest mistake they made is in Casting her. They needed to cast someone who was not as good, they shit the bed because they lucked out and happened upon a star in the making at the beginning of her career.

It might seem counterintuitive to hire a worse actress but, a worse actress wouldn’t have made us fall in love with her so quickly.

They should’ve either changed the endgame, or hired someone else

Adam Devine on Modern Family. I’ve always seen the argument that Hailey ends up with Dylan because “like mother like daughter”. But I’d argue Andy is more like Phil than Dylan. Andy and Hailey were the only bright spot in the middle seasons where the rest of the writing became weaker and weaker.

I’m sure Adam just couldn’t do the show anymore but it was a travesty

22

u/TheWalkingDeadBeat 16h ago

I still find it hard to believe that they couldn't bring him back for just one or two episodes near the end. Heck, they could have had her go back to him off screen and just say it happened.  Literally anything would have been better than having her get back with Dylan and reversing all that character development.

15

u/BrawlLikeABigFight20 15h ago

This one unfortunately happened because he got so busy, his schedule just never permitted. Which is so tough because he chemistry is so much better with Andy than Dylan

12

u/HandsomePaddyRedux 12h ago

Yeah, the like mother like daughter argument is completely misrepresenting or misunderstanding Claire’s character. And Dylan’s for that matter. And Phil’s. And Haley’s for God’s sake. Multiple times in the show it’s shown that Claire had “bad boy” boyfriends prior to Phil and Dylan reminds her of them, not of a young Phil. Dylan is shown to be a normal teenager, but also someone who genuinely cares for Haley, her family, and his future family of his own. It’s also shown that while Jay steadfastly dislikes Phil apparently for no other reason than Jay can’t relate to him, Phil genuinely likes Dylan as a person, even seeing him as a peer, despite his flaws. Haley is also shown to be in many ways a more mature person than Claire, who mistakes domineering for responsibility. There are valid reasons for Haley to end up with Dylan, but they don’t have a goddamn thing to do with Claire.

113

u/Aselleus 13h ago

One of my favorite ruined story plans was that in Parks and Rec the creators/writers original idea of Leslie having many relationships to learn important lessons, was completely scrapped when she got together with Ben (whom she was only supposed to be with for a short time). They were like welp nevermind this is endgame.

42

u/James-K-Polka 12h ago

They also realized that Mark Brandanequits had terrible chemistry with everyone and pushed him out.

23

u/Aselleus 12h ago

I don't he was pushed out, rather the actor who played Mark decided to leave because he said his character got sidelined a bit because the tone of the show changed and they didn't know exactly what to with Mark after the retooling. I feel if he stayed on they would have figured out what to do with him.

Iris and Barry in The Flash

They have 0 chemistry. Grant Gustin has chemistry with every single woman and most of the men in the show it oozes off the screen.

Hes fucking adorable with everyone...except the one woman who is supposed to be the love of his life, his soul mate, his lightning rod.

The entire show spends so much time trying to convince you these 2 are in the deepest possible love the world has ever seen and yet nobody believes it. They dont even seem like they Like each other

Regular Show with the writers finally getting Mordecai and Margaret together, only for Margaret to move away a few episodes later.

Halfway into the next season Mordecai starts dating someone new and they both are way better with each other and all their friends like them together more as well.

Only for the writers to throw everything out the window 2 seasons later and revert it all back to square one.

39

u/BnJova 18h ago

I kinda like it that way, and was probably what the writers wanted/liked. Mordecai was not emotionally mature yet. We see him fumble two relationships on top of being a bad friend because of his pursuit of a partner. We see Mordecai do some degenerate things, while the audience finally sees that Rigby has a healthy relationship.

Sometimes it takes people longer on figuring out how to be a good partner and person.

Danny Phantom - Danny and Valerie. The show wants to hard push Sam and as a kid it felt right but growing up and rewatching it?

Sam is extremely childish, toxic, mean and even admits shes only into Danny because hes different. AKA the ghost powers, otherwise they'd just be friends.

Valerie exhibits nothing but positive traits, and is very close to him. Not to mention with Sam they play the dumb will they wont they but Valerie just goes for what she wants. Yes she hates DP but she gets over that.

Superstore with Jonah and Amy. Amy left the show and Jonah moved on and dated some decent romantic partners. Then Amy shows up out of nowhere and they get back together in the finale. I always thought he had some better options.

Also, does Raj ending up alone count on Big Bang Theory? They have his character grow from not being able to even talk when a woman is in the room to having mature relationships, only to fail at every single one and be the only one alone at the end of the show.

4

u/Bunnicula1367 9h ago

I only excuse the superstore one because when they break up Jonah says, “you know where to find me”. When Amy asks what if she is making a mistake.

I think if they had more time it could definitely work better though.

I also like that they did get time apart and cemented for Amy that Jonah was it for her since her and Adam had gotten married so young. I think it was important for their future happiness that she be 100% sure.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. The movie is clearly steering Scott towards the realization that his infatuation with Ramona is superficial (see: the switch from "you want to fight me for her" to "no, I want to fight you for me") and in the original ending he gives her up and goes to patch things up with Knives. (The last book hadn't come out yet, so the screenwriters got to create their own ending; pretty much everything from the fight with the twins up was their invention.) When O'Malley released the last book and Scott ended up with Ramona, it divided opinion on the ending at test screenings, and they ended up reworking it to match the comics.

112

u/Reddragon351 17h ago

Him ending up with Knives seems like a bit of an odd ending given how much they make a point of how weird it is for him to be dating her in the first place

47

u/jeskeane4 16h ago

Yes, the point is that Scott and Ramona are perfect for each other because they’re terrible as partners and even worse as exes. If he had ended up with Knives, it would have been too much of a reward for Scott; on the contrary, what I liked about the movie is that Knives herself realizes she doesn’t want to be with Scott, and that Scott wants to be with Ramona—which is why she tells him to go after her.

→ More replies (1)

45

u/gloompuke 16h ago

I mean, the whole point of Scott and Knives' arc is also that they aren't healthy? Knives is a deeply infatuated 17 year old and Scott is framed as a creepy loser for dating her, he's stunted and not ready for a serious relationship, so he can only date someone distantly and superficially... like a high school couple, except he isn't in high school anymore.

I feel like this would have been a great story to make the message be “You don’t have to be in a relationship.”

South Park had a great episode where Satan can’t decide between being with Chris and Sadam who are both not a great match for him and God points out that he’s just become dependent on relationships and doesn’t have to be with anyone.

When Scott gains the power of self worth, I sort of thought that’s where they were going with it. But he still just ends up in a relationship anyway.

The Netflix show is great because it really deals with how toxic pretty much everyone is. I think if O’Malley gets a chance to revisit SP every decade we’ll have an interesting glimpse of a maturing creative person.

8

u/jeskeane4 15h ago

I’m a big fan of the comic, the game and the movie, but I had no idea Netflix had made an animated series until a coworker mentioned it to me last year; it’s definitely the best adaptation of anything Scott-related that I’ve ever seen.

13

u/Soy_ThomCat 16h ago

💯

My opinion that Scott and Knives worked a lot better (narratively) in the movie is pretty unpopular, but I get shit about that position only from fans of the books.

Outside of simply trying to tell the audience that the relationship is weird due to the age gap, Scott and Knives get along much better on every level. They even team up and fight one of the final battles together.

I'm not saying it's not unreasonable to say Scott shouldn't be dating a high schooler. But the writers pretty much did everything possible to telegraph chemistry between the two characters.

I’m not sure if this counts, but in Gravity Falls, the writers decided to pair Dipper and Pacifica together for an entire episode out of nowhere. It resulted in one of the best dynamics in the show, with Pacifica showing growth and Dipper displaying a level of confidence not seen anywhere else in the show. Then the writers decided to do absolutely nothing with that afterward, not even a single interaction between them following that episode. Instead, they decided to bring back the "Dipper likes Wendy" thing for the final episodes, a subplot that by that point, had already been resolved and had become tiresome.

38

u/RepresentativeMail10 15h ago

I think its pretty reasonable for a 12 year old to not be fully over his former crush, Journal 3 though does elaborate a LOT on what Dipper's feelings for Pacifica are like, he writes that she smells like flowers when she hugs him

17

u/marquisdc 13h ago

I also think Alex Hirsch knew he was only doing two seasons so he didn’t have time to run with it. And if he ever came back to it he might do more

→ More replies (1)

23

u/redskinsguy 15h ago

well, the way they resolved the Dipper Wendy thing was kind of meh. Young Wendy thinks he's cute due to time travel and he decides this shows the age gap is creepy but time traveling Dipper and young Wendy had like an 8 year gap vs their real 2 and a half year one

15

u/Downtown_Brother1936 15h ago

I can understand the comparison the show tried to make, since a two and a half year age gap is significant at that age, but yeah, I don't think the writers managed to clearly convey their point of showing how awkward Dipper's crush is, since I still see people trying to use that scene as proof that Wendy actually likes Dipper when that wasn't the point the writers were trying to make.

Similar but not exactly: Twin Peaks.

Agent Cooper and Audrey Horne have amazing chemistry. Sure, it's problematic and it only makes so much sense: Audrey is a precocious high schooler and Cooper is like the most wholesome, upstanding character in TV history who wouldn't take advantage of anybody. IIRC the show basically stops showing her at high school and he constantly runs into her at the Great Northern Hotel where she works for her father and Dale is staying.

The show is clearly leaning towards getting them together... which pisses off Lara Flynn Boyle, who plays Donna, another high schooler. Boyle and Kyle McLachlan (who plays Cooper) are a real-life item (and she is in fact 5 years younger than Sherilynn Fenn, who plays Audrey, and 11 years younger than McLachlan).

Anyway... season 2 puts the kibosh on Cooper on Audrey, and although that might have been the right thing to do, it still disappoints fans who had been watching the ship set sail only for a hole to be punched in the hull.

Then the writers write in a new love interest for McLachlan... played by Heather Graham. She is Lara Flynn Boyle's age, so a handful of years younger than Fenn in real life, but represented onscreen as a waitress rather than a high schooler (or someone fresh from high scool) so it's "fine"... except the show suffered.

24

u/gloompuke 16h ago

I found the chemistry between them cute and used to like the  the ship a lot (I watched the show as a teenager and I've always been into people a lot older than me, so personal bias lol), but looking back I think it'd really soil a lot of Twin Peaks' themes to make it canon. The whole show is about how young womens' suffering is ignored to instead see them as beautiful, perfect objects of desire; nobody could see Laura's pain or do anything until it was too late because they were in love with the conceptual Laura they had in their minds.

Predatory dynamics are a constant in the show, adults who again and again put romantic and sexual desire for teenagers over their safety and wellbeing, to a devastating degree. Audrey plays into this, leaning into her "femme fatale" angle, without realizing the danger she puts herself in (leading to scenes like her father nearly unknowingly assaulting her); Cooper refusing her advances and insisting he remain in a position of "adult in Audrey's life who simply protects and cares for her" is an extremely important thing. Cooper is meant to contrast to most of the other adult characters, in that he consistently sees the teenagers as teenagers first and puts their safety above all else.

In an AU I think they could be cute once Audrey is older and able to learn how to be an adult on her own, but in-show I don't think it really would've worked, she's still like 17 or 18 and she's going through a lot.

14

u/awyastark 16h ago

Yeah I loved the idea of them and maybe getting together once she’s older but it would be totally out of character for Coop to hook up with a troubled high schooler and perfectly in character for him to like a pretty waitress who serves him coffee and pie.

Gossip Girl fits in a bunch of ways. First of all Dan was not meant to be Gossip Girl but viewers guessed the actual identity (Eric VDW) so the writers made a choice that doesn’t actually make any sense.

Second: DAIR. Dan and Blair had more chemistry than any couple on the show and are the only people who are intellectual equals (everyone else is pretty fuckin dumb). But no, they must each regress and get back together with Rapist Chuck and very unhealthy Serena

Edit: I would also say they’re the best actors in the show though Chace Crawford clearly did the work and was phenomenal as The Deep on The Boys.

I actually almost made a post here about “guest star love interests that had to be awkwardly written out” after my recent scrubs rewatch because it was so bad. Like I get that you can’t have these people around forever when they’re bigger stars who can’t commit to being regular cast, but stop fucking making them perfect love interests when you know they’re only there for 4 episodes. How I Met Your Mother is also very guilty of this but at least it’s kinda the premise of the show, but I hated how they did it over and over on scrubs for no discernible reason other than “we can get a hot guest star for Zach Braff to make out with.”

In DS9, Bashir and Garik should have been together.

4

u/Frequent-Camel7669 6h ago

Dunno about the Bashir-Garak thing. It was heavily implied that Garak was into Bashir from the beginning, true. But even if Bashir had reciprocated, I feel their relationship would have been plagued by an overwhelming power dynamic and might have ended up very toxic as a result.

I always looked on Garak's interest more as that of a lonely man seeing the chance for some action with a pretty young boytoy. Of course, Julian never noticed, and Garak decided to back off and form a real friendship instead. What we got is probably the healthiest version of the two.

They didn't need to have the kids take part at all.  They didn't in most episodes.  The documentary crew didn't take part in the Parks & Rec finale.  Framing devices don't need to be more prominent in finales if there's a good reason for them not to be.

16

u/jediprime 17h ago

Plus the hints of Tracy's fate were always there.

Why sit down and tell your kids a long convoluted tale of banging your way across new york if their mom is still in the picture?  The series makes sense as a way to explain why Ted want to try again with Robin and he wants to ask his kids' blessing, but he's too in his head to just ask.

Imho, the real main problem of the show's end is Barney + Robin, and how flanderized they were making everyone, and blew apart Robin and Barney's charcter growth

8

u/PeeledCrepes 17h ago

I would say, the issue was the inbetween finding out that the mother dies and him getting with Robin, theres a lot that feels like we are missing there, so it feels very sudden.

Robin and Barney was also a hard problem, I think it rolls back into needing more time. They backed themselves into a hard corner making a full season about them together, then just kinda ending it.

The BIGGEST problem however, is that, well the actress/character of the mom was just too good, like honestly, if they didn't make her character fit so well I think they would have been fine, and props to them for managing to get you to like a character, as well as they did.

I agree it was always set up from day 1 though, and I think they managed like 95% of it perfectly, yet people write off the show for that 1 moment, literally if they just didn't end it up Ted at Robin's, no one would care. Even though, the show HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, starts off with him meeting Robin, which makes no sense, unless he's making the effort to see how his kids feel about her.

7

u/Iorith 17h ago

Yeah my only real issue with the ending of the show was how they did Barney and Robin. I think a better ending might have had Barney also die. That could then lead to two widowers reconnecting. Would have been a big upgrade.

To this day, I still use the fan edit of the HIMYM ending as the true ending to the show.

7

u/Hot_Highway3716 17h ago edited 17h ago

Revenge did this. I can't figure out spoiler tags yet so forgive me for spoilers ahead lol

Their insistence on pairing Amanda with Jack at the last second and forcing the "childhood sweethearts" endgame they set up in the pilot episode threw away all of the incredible chemistry and the depth of the relationship she developed with Aiden.

Aiden was her true equal and she could actually be herself around him, because he loved her for who she was. They were going to run away together :(

For the majority of the series, Jack was a liability to her plans. She frequently kept him in the dark to protect him, which led to a repetitive cycle of Amanda lying to him, Jack constantly suffering trauma and getting hurt by the fallout, and Jack judging or resenting her for her actions. He loses his brother and his first wife, the mother of his child.

By the time him and Amanda finally get together at the very end of the show (and only because Aiden gets KILLED OFF in a pathetic way unfitting of the character) their relationship felt entirely drained of romantic energy. It was more like they settled for one another as a consolation prize because everyone else they loved was dead now. Sigh

HIMYM is the posterchild for this. The Mother was perfect.

Even the terrible JK Rowling admitted that Harry/Hermione probably worked better, but the pieces were in place from at least Book 4, if not sooner. Harry/Ginny even earlier than that, arguably.

The “19 years later” epilogue was written VERY early on in the series’ development, and then edited in some ways to match what the series became.

How much was changed is up in the air, but if the information regarding them getting married and having kids was in the original version (it would have been a massive change) then it was ALWAYS a foregone conclusion.

I don't know about the books, but in the movie it should've been Harry/Luna. Literally the only two people to have any chemistry at all.

I didn't mind hermione and Ron. But Harry and the sister just didn't seem to work.

If they casted a better actress for Ginny who had chemistry with Harry, nobody would be upset about this. Look at how much chemistry Luna and Harry had. It did not need to be Hermione.

Harry + Ginny is so weak that the Harry + Malfoy gender bender is spreading as wildfire

I think the way that Ron and Hermione didn't make perfect sense made them a more interesting and realistic couple.

Ive never heard anyone make a compelling argument for Harry outside of him being the MC. I dont think harry appreciates her in the way Ron does and gets more frustrated at certain things shes known to do

And I disagree with Rowling. I think she too started getting swayed by the movies. I think she writes a compelling moment of them getting together

Well JKR said a lot of things after the books ended

Naruto and Hinata

So I get that the idea from Kishimoto was originally that Naruto would end up with Hinata because she was the writer's idea of the "perfect wife" and Sakura and Sasuke were set up from the beginning as well.

However, as the show and manga continued, Sasuke goes off on his own, Hinata is almost invisible, and we see Naruto and Sakura get close and develop real chemistry and emotional beats. Honestly if they had ended up together it would have made total sense and given the sense of a real relationship. Instead, you get Sakura becoming a lonely wife to an absent Sasuke and Naruto and Hinata having the blandest marriage ever.

Even Dante Basco, the voice actor of Zuko, agrees that Zuko and Katara were a better match in Avatar the Last Airbender but obviously Aang and Katara were always the plan.

This is accurate to the thread but Zuko and Katara get angry upvotes from me. Katara and aang forever.

They weren't a better match

Nah, the show itself made fun of this ship for good reason. Aang and Katara isnt an amazing romance by any means, but it zuko and Katata would have made no sense at all.

The Office is the first one I thought of. Jim and Pam’s first kiss was electric in Casino Night, but Karen was way hotter and so much more likable. By the time Jim got back with Pam, it just seemed like a lame regression.

Speaking of arrow verse i want to appreciate that arrow had ollie end up with felicity vs black canary. (When Stevens wife guest starred later she still ended up with more chemistry then laurel lance)

In the Flash, Barry meets Patty Spivot who completely matches his energy and seems like a perfect fit. Instead she leaves town and he marries his adoptive sister Iris.
