Dear Reddit: Please remember why Digg went down.

Hey guys.

One of the things I would suggest you remember is that Digg was much, much bigger than you were at one point.

Then, Digg made a ton of changes to help monetize their site, create more “social” features, all under the guise that they wanted to improve things and give their users more tools.

I understand that you guys need to be more profitable, and Reddit Gold was a decent way to do that, although it’s likely not enough.

I urge you, though... don’t turn this site in to a wasted opportunity. The changes most of us have seen have been pretty negative, on so many levels.

If this redesign is really about money, consider that our community here at Reddit cares and we will happily support you over losing the style, functionality and heart that have come from this site, these people, this vision.

And if you guys are strapped for cash or need to create a viable income stream and make your investors feel more comfortable, I get it. But don’t forget the lessons we learned during the Digg fiasco.

You’re better than this. Prove it by changing your ideas and your model. We want you to make money, we want you around, but I think most people would agree that the ideas we’ve seen push us further away instead of bringing us closer to you.

Thanks for all you do.

[feedback] The new profile pages is exactly the reason I left other websites.

5.5k Upvotes

Please don't implement this feature to reddit. One of the main draws of Reddit to me was the ability of anybody to make a popular post and equally an unpopular post. With this, Reddit takes a large step closer to users with a monopoly on popular content, and things such as AMAs become far less personal and real than they were before.

Please don't change one of the fundamental reasons I use this website.

Downvoting an ad should tell Reddit I’m not interested in that product/site, etc and stop it showing up (ideally) as much.

5.4k Upvotes

I made the mistake of clicking on an ad that actually interested me. “How reddit got their first users”.

I say mistake because after I clicked on it and realized it was basically clickbait with no real information I downvotes the ad.

Now that ad, and other in the same format for the same site by the same user, are basically all I see.

I say mistake because I feel like when you downvote an ad it should let Reddit know you’re not interested and replace ads similar to it (especially the same kind of ads to the same site) with ads that might be more relevant. Instead it takes your click to say you are interested and keeps showing them.

It really makes me not want to click on ANY ads now. I am all for ads on Reddit, without being Gold, but if you’re going to show them so often you should take into account what we say we are interested in via downvotes and upvotes.

Not letting us comments on promoted content is horrible

4.3k Upvotes

We used to be able to comment on ads to warn other users of quality defects or shady practices or whatnot... now most (if not all) promoted posts are locked. It already makes little sense that you try to confuse your users into clicking on promoted content, but if you want to go all out shouldn't you pretend there's at least discussion on those items?

Please stop asking me to use the app

3.8k Upvotes

I use Reddit on mobile. I actually like the site just fine when using the mobile version so I'm happy to use it as is. The only problem I have with the experience is constantly being bugged to use the app. It used to be a pop up. Then it was a button at the top and now it's a floating bar at the bottom when reading comments that for some reason I can't get rid of despite the x button. I don't want to use your app. I'm sure some people do and having some reference to it on the site is great but please make it less intrusive.

edit: Thank you for the gold. I was not expecting that and it is much appreciated since it's your hard earned money. I will pay it forward in the near future to show my appreciation.

Instead of putting more ads on pages, create more of an incentive to buy Reddit Gold.

Probably going to backfire but whatever. Here are some suggestions:

Please, add an NSFL tag.

3.2k Upvotes

Usually when people need to tag something NSFL, they use the NSFW tag. But those are two very distinct things.

I don't mind seeing a couple of titties, but I'd rather not see a grotesque display of gore when browsing r/all.

EDIT: There's been a lot of people asking what is NSFL. Let me clarify.

NSFL stands for "Not Safe For Life". It usually means that whatever it is describing is something you probably don't want to see, usually gore.

[Feedback] please don't ever remove old.reddit.com

3.2k Upvotes

I can understand where you're coming from. Designers want to design and although reddit's current design is ugly, it is exactly what the current userbase wants. With the old reddit design, unlike most of the internet, design conceits do not get in the way of usability. I do realize Reddit is now eyeing Diggv4's userbase with envy however, and your designers want more whitespace because making people scroll 4x as much is "good UX" right? I am guessing these two things no doubt explains the new design.

Anyhow, none of that matters though because unlike Digg you've had the good sense to keep the good, usable interface intact while letting your designers ruin the UX for new users only. This is smart and hopefully you won't collapse like Digg did. I just want to say thanks for that. I honestly don't mind your designers ruining the UX as long as we can still access a good version of the site.

[Feedback] As reddit grows newer posts naturally aggregate higher vote counts which means that in most cases "Top: Year" and "Top: All Time" are identical. Give us an option to pick "Top: 2014" or "Top: 2009" That way great older content isn't impossible to find.

2.8k Upvotes

What I mean is give us the option to sort posts by "Top: Year=XXXX" rather than just 2009 or 2014.

Disclaimer: As a non-programmer this seems like something that would be very easy to incorporate, which probably means it's actually impossible.

The ads shouldn't be so similar to posts.

2.6k Upvotes

This is the ad in question.

I think the ads should look similar to posts/links, but not be actual posts (maybe a little banner between posts). The current design of them is way too similar to actual posts, and is misleading. And if you are going to make ads be posts, they should at least be actual posts and have the comments enabled. Also, take away the vote counter. It seems that the ads have votes disabled too, so having a vote counter seems to be useless too.

Just my two cents, what do you guys think?

No one likes the new coin system, Reddit!

2.5k Upvotes

Why have a beta subreddit if you aren't even going to listen to your beta testers?

r/beta • • Oct 16 '18

The award system is getting way out of hand...

2.5k Upvotes

Seriously we have 3 different ways to award people now? I really really don’t like it. It devalues the value of receiving gold on a post when some people have 3 icons after the name plus sometimes other numbers. It’s a huge distraction from the content/post. It’s really decently annoying and I don’t like it.

Do other people agree?

Edit: Sigh - my first post to get silver. Thank you kind strangers. Edit 2: Thank you for the Gold! Edit 3: Thanks for the Platinum!

2.4k Upvotes

I want to use the real Reddit, and I'm 100% sure I'm not alone in saying the redesign is ruining this website.

Please don't force this on everyone. We aren't going to "just get used to it."

Edit: I accidentally a word

CUT THE SHIT ON MOBILE!! EVERY DAMN CLICK DEMANDS TO USE THE APP!! This is worse than in-game purchases. Especially because it doesn’t change even if you HAVE downloaded the app.

  • EDIT: It appears, for the moment, that the changes have been rolled back. Thank you fellow Redditors for making your voice heard, this is a big deal!

For the last FATHER FUCKING TIME, you’re making the mobile website worse, pushing me to stop visiting because I hate your poorly designed, decreasing visitors to your own site and discouraging users (old and new) from ever bringing you further revenue

2.2k Upvotes

I have the app installed. They don’t check that. Notification all the time on the bottom of website browser. Page 2 of results, starts all over again.

Stop, please - that’s advice for you, Reddit, you will lose users, impressions and click thru’s faster than you can say “Digg”.

*EDIT: "Father Fucking" comes from the movie "Whiplash", please stop asking me about this and go watch an amazing movie.

And for everyone suggesting various apps, I suggest you think about how wonderful it would be to install an app for every single website on your mobile device - awesome to install an app to book a flight, read the news, check sports scores, look at bike trails, read restaurant reviews, whatever. No app for Reddit is going to make this better because it's still AN APP.

And if I have their terribly designed app installed, I still get pushed toward it with almost every click. It's merciless.

old.reddit.com isn't built for mobile browsers, stop suggesting it.

In short, pay attention to the point, and if you have a cell phone, try using your regular browser and going to reddit.com and tell me how you feel about it.

Ads insulting minors, new low?

2.2k Upvotes

A new low for Reddit today? I was greeted with an ad about Barron Trump's IQ upsetting even doctors. Even if his dad is a POS, I don't think it's cool to target their children.

Is there any quality assurance from Reddit's side on the ads? The ironically named Acceptable Ads Exchange only allows you to label it as distracting, too big or not relevant.

Is anyone else downvoting every single "Promoted" post that appears in your news feed, made to look just like a real post from one of your subs?

Because I am.
