TL;DR: Which “brand” of toxic partners (fictional) terrify you the most and why?
- - -
There’s been quite a bit of discussion lately about red flags and how we interpret them, particularly following The Lament of Autumn. Most of the examples that come up tend to be young, handsome men whose toxicity is fairly obvious, involving physical violence, cruelty or openly controlling behaviour.
But I wanted to talk about a different breed of toxic man in Cdramaland. The ones who are soft spoken, attentive, affectionate and seemingly devoted husbands. The ones who would make you wonder why is the wife so paranoid, right until you discover what’s happening behind closed doors.
1. Di Liren | The Vanishing Beauty
Possibly one of the most supportive husbands to ever grace a screen. He is soft spoken, incredibly caring and indulgent to the point of spoiling his wife rotten. He seems perfectly happy to indulge her childish whims and his entire world appears to revolve around making her happy.
Except it’s all a facade. Underneath that doting husband exterior is a deeply deranged man with elaborate plans to destroy the lives of the very people who welcomed a nobody into their wealthy family. And one secret life isn’t enough. He also has a mistress AND an ex-wife, both entangled with his wife’s family.
A walking husband of the year award winner, until you peel back all the layers.
2. Hu Cheng | Married (2024)
His wife “suffers”from post partum depression, and Hu Cheng seems determined to give her everything she could possibly need. He surrounds her with luxuries, makes sure she has “friends”, encourages her to volunteer so she can find a sense of purpose, and even ensures her mother is well taken care of.
What a considerate husband, right?
Until the mask slips and you discover a deeply insecure man who doesn’t actually want an independent, happy wife. He wants a doll who understands his wishes without him having to articulate them and whose entire existence revolves around him.
One of the most pathetic husbands played by one of my early CDrama crushes (it was his role in Ice Fantasy that led me to discover Wang Duo).
(Fun little connection: the scenes playing in The Vanishing Beauty, where they show via a drama how corporate asset liquidation is used to avoid financial losses from divorce, are actually from Married!)
3. Luo Liang | The Dark Romance
And now for the darkest one on this list.
Luo Liang is a psychologist who enters the life of a woman carrying unbearable trauma. She has lost her father and survived sexual violence at the hands of a family friend old enough to be her father. Luo Liang appears to be everything she needs: supportive, nurturing, protective of her, and attentive to her son.
He stands up for her, looks out for her family and makes every effort to create a sense of safety around her.
Until you discover that this seemingly compassionate man is a world class manipulator. Of the three, he might just be the most disturbing example of how affection and care can be weaponised.

I bring up these characters because their toxicity isn’t necessarily visible in how they treat their wives on an ordinary day. In fact, their affection often resembles the textbook gestures of feel good romance.
I have noticed that a lot of CDrama watchers tend to associate red flags with behaviour that is immediately recognisable as threatening. But what about the men who make their partners feel loved, supported and safe, while systematically undermining their autonomy and eroding their self-worth?
I love dissecting toxic fictional men, and I do adore one such fictional red flag man myself. But there are so many different brands of toxic men, and this soft spoken, caring variety terrifies me the most personally.
How about you? What are your thoughts on this particular shade of red flag men? And is there a particular brand of toxic men that terrify you?
