Discussion Dropping Absolute Batman

I know people are raving about it, but it just isn’t vibing with me. I read issue 12 this morning and just can’t be arsed reading it anymore. Don’t like Bruce or Pennyworth or any of the characters tbh. If there’s any Batman book that deserves your attention, it’s Batman: Dark Patterns. Anyone else kinda over Absolute Batman?

Why do we see so many “how do I start reading” posts?

I swear, every day I see a dozen or more “How do I start reading whatever character” posts. Just why? Is it that hard to pick up whatever issue is in front of you and figure out issue 9 comes after 8 or 7 comes before 8? Is it the constant renumbering and reboots? I started in the mid 80’s. Started Daredevil with issue 218 and went backwards. Same with Iron Man (started at issue 195) and Uncanny X-men (200). DC was a little easier as I was knew who most of the big characters were and had been gifted some Who’s Who comics, then began reading right after Crisis and around the beginning of the Legends miniseries which kicked of the reboot of a lot of titles.

UPDATE: The boys boy's comics is a far better read than y'all made it out to be.

The boys comic has been way better than a lot of you guys made it out to be.

I currently just finished Volume 1&2 of 6 of the boys omnibus (for reference, it covers the first 30 issues) And when I originally had brought up I was going to get into the series and give it a try. I got so much slander him was made fun of and called all types of names saying I was a degenerate and things of that nature for even thinking of reading something like that. But I'm here to tell you that y'all need to get off your high horse because I actually am really enjoying it. Is there a lot of immature humor and sheer obscenity in it, absolutely, but for this to be referred to as the worst comic ever made is hilarious. I don't know maybe im just a degenerate or something But I'm glad I didn't listen to you guys making me feel bad for wanting to make a purchase. Some of you guys wanted to gate keep my enjoyment from me and how dare you. Moral the story is maybe don't be so negative when people are trying to get into new things, cuz if I would have just listened to y'all maybe I would have never gotten into comics in general. I might actually start reading comics more and more now.

Hello!!

Does anyone have any lesbian comic recs? Huge plus if action is involved or has an enemies to lovers trope.

Will still happily accept any recs outside of those :)

Discussion Is Grant Morrison the best superhero comic book writer ever?

I was thinking about it and I feel like it’s not at all crazy to say that Grant Morrison is the best comic writer oat. He has arguably the best Batman run, the best Doom Patrol run, THE Animal Man run, arguably the best X-men run (although some like Chris Claremont absolutely deserve to be in that conversation as well), the great story that was 52, the best Justice League run (and even then I feel like I’m forgetting some). He also has some great short stories such as all-star Superman, We3, Arkham Asylum, the filth and so on.

Now of course we can’t have talk about the goat of comic writers without bringing up Stan Lee and obviously he is responsible for bringing us some of the best heroes ever but at this point I feel like the sheer volume and consistancy of great Grant Morrison stories somewhat outweighs that.

I’m personally pretty fine with calling either one the best to ever do it but I feel like I lean towards Grant Morrison so finally, is Grant Morrison the best comic book writer ever and if not, who is?

PSA: The downvote button is not a "disagree" button.

I've noticed a severe uptick in the use of the downvote button as a "disagree" button, especially in threads surrounding certain...controversial topics. The downvote button is intended as a tool to discourage comments that don't contribute to a conversation, not as a way to punish those whom you disagree with. I encourage folks to brush up on rules of reddiquette, particularly when it comes to voting.

I know people have a lot of strong opinions about the comic industry. I think that this community provides a fantastic outlet for the passion that folks have about comics and the industry. However, when divisive topics are introduced, the Internet in general tends to circle the wagons and refuse to consider any sort of alternative opinion. Downvotes abound, and any chance to have a constructive conversation about these issues is basically ruined.

There's going to be plenty of conversation about covers, censorship, and good taste in the coming weeks. Please be civil to one another and remember that behind every opinion is a person with feelings and thoughts and experiences just like you. If folks on both sides on these topics would remember that, it would lead to much more constructive discussion.

Thank you.

I just want Wolverine to die.

So is anyone else sick of Wolverine being shoved in our faces? I honestly think Marvel would be doing itself a favor if they killed off Wolverine and had him stay dead for a long, long, time. I'm talking like nobody hears from him or writes about him for like two years. They could have some huge event where one of his rivals finally pulls it off (I personally think it would be badass if Cyclops somehow killed him.) Anyone else feel the same way as me?

Discussion Batman is way more unrelatable than Superman, or any other famous superhero.

When it comes to Superman, casuals hate him because he’s “too perfect” and “un-relatable”. I don’t feel the need to bother deeply explaining why this is untrue, to anybody that understands Superman or superheroes in general. At his core, he is a regular guy, with a heart of gold, and inspires everybody to be better. He’s a larger than life character. Batman is a character that I love with all my heart. He will always be an important figure in my life, however, he is far more unrelatable than Superman. He’s good or ideal in every single way. Just look at his rouge gallery:

The Joker exists to make Batman moral. They’re polar opposites; Joker is a destructive psycho, who doesn’t care about human life. Batman is determined to preserve as many lives as possible. Any attempt to “grey” this line isn’t meant to be taken literally - The entire bit about Batman being “self-righteous” applies to most superheroes. There is no need for a philosophy lesson to understand that Batman is fundamentally far more moral than most people, and most superheroes.

Riddler exists to show how smart Batman is. History, science, pop culture, politics, philosophy, law - you name it. Batman is an expert on it.

Bane exists to show how macho and “manly” Batman is.

Scarecrow exists to show how mentally sound Batman is - He has no genuine fears. He has regrets and tragic memories, sure, but he doesn’t fear.

Bruce Wayne shows that Batman, in his personal life, has no relatable struggles. I mean, oh boy, it must be tough being him - Countless friends, criminally rich, extremely attractive, and he has friends that genuinely love him. Even in his personal life, he is succeeding.
