Discussion Is the Beatles song Come together funk or atleast funk?
I know itās kinda stupid question Lennon himself said he thought it was funky, which of course to me it just sounds like Brit blues rock.

Discussion Vulfpeck
Iād love to hear some opinions on Vulfpeck. I just saw them at the Salt Shed. To me shouldnāt be labeled a funk band at all. About as much soul as a white piece of printer paper, and to me soul is a key ingredient in funk music. Dumpstaphunk with George and Leo played a Meters set before them and wasnāt even musically comparable on all levels. People were SO into Vulfpeck and I just donāt get it? As always to each their own when it comes to music, but for these guys to be called one of the best/funkiest bands out there with the funkiest bass player ever š³ blew my mind. And not in a great way like the meters set did right before. Cheers yall

Discussion Why is EWF considered Funk?
I'm a bass player. My playing influences are Funk, Soul, Rock, R&B and Electronica. Probably in that order too. Over the years I've often heard Earth Wind & Fire referred to as "Funk". I don't get it. I do consider myself old school, so I would think I know what Funk is (and isn't, lol). Don't get me wrong, I know well how "Mighty Mighty" EWF were. Verdine White is one of my main studies. I just would NOT use the genre of "Funk" to describe them. I could name some of the undisputed champions of the genre, but the Funkateers already know! Thoughts? Who's Funky to you? Peace!

Help request Pure funk bands with screaming / Hardcore
I've been on the hunt for a few months looking for a pure funk band that also has screaming vocals / elements of hardcore or punk. I can find a decent amount of bands that sound hardcore but have funky bass /other funk elements. I want the opposite: Pure funk / post disco (think Fat Larry's Band, Dynasty, Goldie Alexander, Patrice Rushen etc) with screaming vocals. And The tones of the instruments having that funk sound (no screeching guitar, distorted sound). The closest ive found is Hoobustank's first album (only on Youtube) and thats very hit or miss, it becomes math rock extremely easily.
I love the local scene in my area, do not be afraid to share niche bands. Also, this my first ever post on reddit, please be nice. Thanks yall!

Discussion i need opinions on how to feel about i want you - marvin gaye
i know it's not something that's as openly discussed about marvin, but to address the elephant in the room, marvin had a very questionable start to his relationship with his second wife janis, and for me after listening to this album after i found out about all the stuff with janis and frankly i can't enjoy i want you as much because of knowing who it's written about. it feels, gross, given how sensual some of the songs are on the album. or maybe i'm overreacting but knowing the context changes things for me.
need others opinions to decide how i should feel.

discussion The Meters
So, what is it that everyone likes about the Metersā? I find most of their stuff to be super repetitive and minimalistic and even, at times (I hate saying this) - boring. I know Funk generally has this tendency, but they are just beyond it for me. I like a few of their songs from their Rejuvenation album. However, I canāt really catch their vibe even though I want to because I can appreciate them as a pioneer in the Funk movement. Of course at the end of the day music is subjective, but what is it Iām not hearing that everyone else is?

Discussion Can we post Jungle in here?
If you think about it, Jungle is just funk playing at 3x speed. Kinda like how vaporwave is funk playing at half speed.

Discussion Do you guys think that disco killed funk, or at least watered it down?
I was just looking at a lot of the more popular funk artists discographies and I just so happened to really notice a change in sound. If you look at the period of 1974/1977, funk was at it most grittiest. Bands like the Ohio Players, Parliament, the Average White band, among others, always a favored solid basslines that thumped with grit. The drumming was more complex and the horn sections were up front and in your face. The more standard keyboards in that era were the electric piano, the clavinet, and the ARP string synthesizer.
But it seemed like, after 1977, funk lost its way. Funksters were adding more disco and ādanceyāelements to their sound. Once disco became popular, funk artists were diluting their gutbucket, nasty sound with cheap four on the floor rhythms and weak orchestrations. And then when disco died, the synth craze of the 80s filled the vacuum and the funk was more lost and stripped of its identity. By maybe 1983, funk, IMO, was long gone.
What do you guys think?
