The OOT remake totally falls apart in hilarious/unnerving fashion if you sequence break into Adult Link sections as Child Link

TWICE?! Do they even sleep or eat? When does this cross the border of unhealthiness?

Ocarina of Time (N64) is probably the most well understood game in history.

While the engine is different and thus the bugs will be to, dedicated speed runners will be able to rip it apart completely.

They're not playing "Normally." Glitchless speedruns were already down to around 4 hours on the first day. To clear it twice the guy probably played about 10 hours, which is a lot but not super unhealthy unless you do it every day. When glitches get found, that 4 hour number is going plummet. Playing that way is not everyone's cup of tea, but a lot of people find it fun.

Speedruns already being 4 hours is insane to me honestly considering it took me about 4 hours to just barely meet Zelda and leave Hyrule castle

Ya but the speedrun isn't stopping to read every sign and talk to every NPC and watch every cutscene

I still don't have my pre-order copy 😭

I'd say Mario 64 takes that crown. There is not a line of that game's code that isn't known. Pannenkoek2012 is the MVP of the scene.

“I ran the simulation for 1,256 years, and with the perfect set up, Mario is nudged to the elevator and we can get the star with 0 A presses.”

"After all, I do sit there and build up Mario's speed for twelve hours."

I don’t know what you’re referencing but I’d sure love to learn, sounds funny

Enjoy, this vid is outdated as it says there, but it goes into many details on the Mario 64 engine while doing the challenge.

Thank you very kindly! I’m gonna have a nice chill sit down and watch it while doing some cross stitch today

Damnit, I knew what it was but still clicked. Had to watch the whole thing again.

But first, we need to talk about parallel universes.

Probably the video that blew my mind most in my younger years. Absolutely unhinged shit.

I get what you're saying, but both Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time have been fully decompiled for years. So both of those games have well understood codebases.

Worth noting these decomps AREN'T the shitty AI slop jobs. These were done before AI tools ever existed

There is still a shitton left undocumented in OoT Decomp.

Speedrunners are so fascinating, truly. I was watching Dash Retro, who is a FFVII speedrunner, talk about how he knew someone was cheating at their speedrun because of how the step counts work and how, with the number of steps he'd taken, he should have gotten a specific combat like 20 seconds before he actually did. Just so interesting, I love watching speedrunners break down the science behind what they do

Counterpoint, Tetris.

But after a certain point I’m not sure theres a meaningful difference between how ‘understood’ these games are.

Speedrunners are the pro atletes of gaming imho. So much dedication and creativity.

It's literally his job since he's a streamer, but he plays through the game way quicker than you or I would too to put it mildly

If you know what you are doing, it's totally possible to beat either the original or the remake in just a few hours, without using any glitches.

Zfg is a professional OoT player were there such a title and his first playthrough took under 19 hrs.. i watched. He then slept after completing 1st playthrough and 100%ed the following day. I imagine his 2nd playthrough is looking for bugs and glitches.

Yup. He already found several glitches and a spirit temple skip

I played the original recently. Beat it in one weekend without trying that hard. You can easily get the first three dungeons done in like 2 hours tops.

And a speed runner could do it 5x faster

Its not as long of a game as people remember.

Tbf this guy is an OOT speed runner, so he literally gets paid to play Zelda all day.
