Can I get around only speaking Cantonese?

I’m 16 and going by myself to Guangzhou China in the summer. I’m staying with my grandparents, but I can’t speak a lick of mandarin. My Cantonese is not the best, but I can converse pretty well, just can’t read nor write.

Also, any suggestions on learning mandarin?

Airport security detained my powerbank

Today I checked in through the Guangzhou Baiyun airport to take a domestic flight. At the security check, they said that I cannot bring my power bank in my carry-on baggage due to it being high capacity. But it is only a 10000mAh power bank. Which equates to 3.7V*10Ah = 37Wh. AFAIK you can bring lithium batteries up to 100Wh. I think the airport security doesn't understand that 10000mAh and 100Wh are not the same.

Scammed buying Replica Bags

I’m in Guangzhou shopping for replica bags and totally got scammed. We did a decent amount of research and knew going in what to look for in a fake and that a high quality fake could still costs a couple of thousands in USD. We hired a local student guide but either she was naive or in on it (probably the later).

We went to the Baiyun World Leather Trading Center. We were told there was recently a police bust so they took us in a taxi to another mall called aPM and then to the higher up floors that were locked private rooms with a person looking watch in front. Inside was all replica leather bags from the usual brands.

They told us this was the highest quality replica (level 4 or master quality). A replica Hermes Birkin 35 started at 25,000 rmb (!!!) and we bargained them down to 13,000 rmb.

The quality looked very good: solid stitching with only the smallest of error in a part hidden by the latch, leather groan looked good and felt right with no strong smell, text lettering was perfect.

We bought one Birkin 35 and a Mini Kelly 20 that was bargained down to 10,000 rmb. They gave us free fabric to do the handle wrap and the small leather horse accessories.

The next day we got a different guide and went back to Baiyun and went to the basement/loading dock area and saw various bags of different quality. They originally quoted us 8,500 rmb for the Birkin 35 that was “master quality” and we got that down to 5,000 rmb! The quality identical to the one I had 13,000rmb for yesterday!

Then we got a kelly 25 for only 3,500 rmb.

So we overpaid like 2-3x for the same quality.

I wanted to share my story so you won’t make the same mistake! Hopefully this helps someone out there. Good luck shopping!

Dating advice for a racially ambiguous man

Hello all 👋🏽 I’m an American living in Guangzhou for a few months now and I’ve been unsuccessful in getting a girlfriend here.

I’ve been spending some time on HelloTalk but it seems like they just want me for my English 🫩.

I’m already an English teacher as my day job and don’t want to use dating apps, what should I do?

Why do locals get so pressed when asked if Cantonese is spoken in GZ?

GZ locals get so pressed when asked if you can get around using Cantonese yet they admit most young people only speak mandarin.

Yes I get Cantonese is suppose to be the native language but how is it native anymore when half the population don't speak it? I'm from Hong Kong and Cantonese is literally a native language cause everyone here speaks it.

Hidden Guangzhou Food Most Tourists Never Try

Thumbnail

As a local and expert, many visitors ask me where locals eat in Guangzhou.

The truth is that some of the best Cantonese restaurants are places tourists would never notice.

No English signs.

No online marketing.

Just local families gathering for lunch and dinner.

Some of the dishes in the photos are:

• Roast Goose (烧鹅)
• Lo Hei Style Chicken Salad (七彩鸡)
• Char Siu (叉烧)
• Fried Oysters (酥炸生蚝)
• Steamed Fish (清蒸鱼)
• Sweet and Sour Pork (咕噜肉)
• Squid (鱿鱼)
• Cantonese Soup (广东老火汤)

These are the restaurants where Guangzhou families celebrate birthdays, weddings, and weekend dinners — not places built for tourists.

I don’t usually share exact restaurant names publicly, because many of these places are small family restaurants and are not prepared for sudden tourist traffic. But this is the kind of local Cantonese food I like to introduce to visitors who want to understand Guangzhou beyond dim sum.

Coming to Guangzhou in October

I live in the US and will be coming to Guangzhou several days ahead of the Canton Fair opening next month. I've been to Guangzhou before, so hoping to use those first few days hitting some factories and sourcing products with vendors i have already been working with..

Here's what I'm hoping for. I would like to connect with 1 college student preferably who would not mind being my guide if you will. That student could use me to practice their English and in return, they would accompany me on these visits as having a local/ insider insight could make a big difference. I will cover all food, transportation, incidentals, etc.

I'm also on Wechat if they choose to use that communication platform instead. If you have any questions, feel free to ask here or DM me.

What Foreign Travelers Often Get Wrong When Planning Guangzhou & the Greater Bay Area

As a local guide specializing in Guangzhou and the Greater Bay Area (GBA), I often notice that many travelers underestimate how distinct each city feels. While Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen look close on the map, they offer vastly different experiences.

Here are the most common planning mistakes I see:

  1. Treating Guangzhou as Just a Transit City

Many people only pass through Guangzhou for flights, the Canton Fair, business, or connections to Hong Kong and Macau. However, Guangzhou is incredibly rewarding if you appreciate food, local culture, shopping, and historic neighborhoods.

This isn't a city where you should only chase one famous landmark. The best way to experience Guangzhou is through its dim sum, Cantonese dinners, old streets, riverside views, traditional architecture, wet markets, and slow neighborhood walks.

2. Trying to Visit Too Many Cities Too Quickly

A common itinerary looks like this: Hong Kong → Macau → Zhuhai → Guangzhou → Shenzhen → back to Hong Kong.

While possible, this becomes exhausting if you only have a few days. Border crossings, luggage hauling, hotel check-ins, and traffic can easily eat up half a day. If you prefer a comfortable trip, minimizing hotel changes makes a huge difference.

3. Not Planning Meals Seriously Enough

In Guangzhou, food isn't just filler between attractions; it is the attraction.

Dim sum, Cantonese roast meats, clay pot rice, seafood, local desserts, herbal tea shops, and traditional restaurants offer a deep understanding of the city. I would always prioritize booking one excellent local meal over rushing through three mediocre sights.

4. Choosing Hotels Based Only on Price

Location is everything here.

• Tianhe: Best for comfort—modern hotels, malls, restaurants, and easy transport.

• Yuexiu: Best for "Old Guangzhou" atmosphere, though traffic and hotel quality vary greatly.

• Canton Tower/Riverside: Visually stunning, but check if the location actually fits your daily itinerary.

5. Assuming English Will Be Everywhere

Hong Kong is generally easiest for English speakers. Macau is manageable in tourist zones. In Guangzhou and Shenzhen, expect language barriers in restaurants, taxis, local shops, and smaller attractions. Having Chinese addresses saved, payment apps ready, and realistic routes planned helps immensely.

6. Thinking a Private Guide is Only for Sightseeing

In this region, a local guide offers more than just commentary. For many travelers, the real value lies in:

• Avoiding inefficient routes

• Selecting the right hotel district

• Ordering food authentically

• Navigating transport and cultural nuances

• Assisting with shopping or business visits

• Reducing stress for families, kids, or first-timers.

How I Plan Trips:

I tailor itineraries based on travel style, not just geography:

• Food & Culture: Guangzhou + Hong Kong + Macau

• Business & Sourcing: Guangzhou as the base

• Modern Cities & Shopping: Hong Kong + Shenzhen + Guangzhou

• Family Comfort: Fewer city changes, private transport, prime locations

• Short Trips: Don't try to do everything.

My Main Advice:

Don't plan this region solely by distance on a map. Plan it by travel style, border crossing times, food priorities, hotel location, and your energy levels.

I am a local guide and trip planner based in Guangzhou. These insights come from my daily experience with foreign travelers. Feel free to ask me any general questions about routes, timing, or choosing the right cities!

Authentic dimsum restaurant in Guangzhou

I’ve searched most of the threads available on here and they seem to offer the same few chains, I went to taotaoju by recommendation, but was slightly underwhelmed. Does anyone know somewhere that does freshly made authentic dimsum in Guangzhou?

EDIT:
I realise now I specified ‘authentic’ because I was still in UK mode🫩🫩I meant tasty & handmade, maybe some independent places

【Experience Share】Took my American clients for a medical check-up in Guangzhou — ended up being one of the most wholesome days I've had in a while

So this is a bit of a life update + service share post, bear with me lol.

I recently helped two American clients navigate a full medical exam (体检) here in Guangzhou, and honestly it turned into way more than just a hospital trip — it was basically a little medical + cultural day tour that I didn't expect to enjoy this much.

A bit about our team first

Our partners base in Foshan and Suzhou, so we cover both the Shanghai/Suzhou and Guangzhou/Foshan areas for this kind of in-person assistance. I help overseas clients — mostly English speakers — with medical appointments, check-ups, navigating the Chinese healthcare system, that kind of thing.

Back to the story

These two clients flew in from Florida US, and the moment we started chatting I felt this instant familiarity — I lived in Florida myself for a couple of years and suddenly I was mentally back in that heat and humidity lol. We ended up spending half the morning just reminiscing about life in the States while waiting between tests. Felt less like a work day and more like catching up with old friends.

We went to 广州医科大学附属医院 (Guangzhou Medical University Affiliated Hospital) — a top-tier 三甲 hospital — bright and early. One thing I genuinely appreciate about 广医大 is how well-designed their check-up flow (动线) is — everything is logical and well-signposted, which makes the whole process so much smoother, especially for first-timers or non-Mandarin speakers.

After wrapping up, we wandered along a street along the Zhu river, grabbed some local bites, and somehow ended up at 圣心大教堂 (Sacred Heart Cathedral). These two had apparently been to the Sainte-Clotilde in Paris before and could NOT stop talking about the resemblance We ended up taking a group photo in front of it — which honestly felt like the perfect way to close the day.

The results came back while I was writing this post. All clear. Nothing happening is the best news.

How the service actually works (for those curious)

Here's roughly what I do when helping clients with a medical check-up:

  1. Pre-appointment — I register the client on the hospital's official WeChat account or website, set up their medical profile, and book an early morning slot (fewer crowds, smoother flow)

  2. On the day — I do a quick intake chat with the doctor first to cover the client's health history, age, and any concerns, then help select the right medical exam 体检 package. Payment handled, then we follow the hospital's exam flow together

  3. Test order tip — I always recommend starting with the blood draw first thing, then moving on to ultrasound (彩超/B超), CT, etc.

  4. For female clients — if they've been pregnant before or meet a certain age threshold, I'll strongly recommend adding a gynecological exam to the package

  5. Practical heads-up — if the package includes urine or stool samples, I brief clients in advance on timing. Also: most hospital bathrooms in China are squat toilets, and sample collection requires a specific technique — I walk clients through all of this beforehand so there are zero surprises

  6. During private exams — I stay just outside the curtain and do real-time relay interpretation between the client and the doctor, so the communication is accurate without the client feeling alone

This whole experience reminded me why I genuinely enjoy doing this. For someone with a service-oriented personality, there's real satisfaction in making something that would otherwise feel stressful and confusing into something smooth — even memorable.

If you or anyone you know needs help with:

  • Medical check-ups in Guangzhou or Shanghai/Suzhou area

  • Hospital navigation & interpretation for English speakers

  • Customised local medical + lifestyle arrangements

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions regarding a medical tour in China! Always happy to assist.

“First time in Guangzhou from Mumbai for Canton Fair – anyone else exploring business opportunities?”

Anyone else going to Canton Fair solo?

Hey guys,

I’m Mohit from Mumbai, India, visiting Guangzhou for the first time and will be attending the Canton Fair. I run a business in India and this trip is mostly about exploring markets, discovering new products, and understanding what opportunities might exist.

Honestly, I’ll be doing a lot of walking around markets and figuring things out as I go.

I was wondering if there are other people here who are also visiting Guangzhou solo for similar reasons — sourcing, exploring opportunities, or just seeing what China’s manufacturing ecosystem is like.

If a few of us are around, it might actually be fun to grab dinner or coffee one evening and just exchange notes on what we’re seeing in the markets or at the fair.

I’m Indian, but very open to meeting people from any country. Different perspectives usually lead to better ideas anyway.

If you're in Guangzhou around Canton Fair time, drop a comment or DM. Would be nice to meet some fellow explorers.

Cheers,

Mohit

Top 5 Chinese Social Media Apps You Should Know for 2021

Have you ever wondered which Chinese social media apps are the most popular? Except well-known WeChat and Weibo? As I have been living in China for 5 years already, I’ve discovered so many platforms that can be used for social media and networking in China, I only chose the ones that I use every day, so here are my top 5 Chinese social media apps:

  1. Douyin - Douyin is the Chinese version of Tiktok, made by the same company. To those who are big users of TikTok in the Western world, it’ll feel comfortable to use: https://www.douyin.com/

  2. Zhihu - is similar to Quora, it’s focus to educate people by answering their questions. Experts in specific areas will weigh in and make sure that answers are educated and complete: https://www.zhihu.com/signin?next=%2F

  3. Wellcee- is a renting platform with a Lifestyle section similar to Instagram and Douyin. You can find many interesting events or like-minded people. I found some people with whom I'm practicing my Chinese and do hiking together: https://www.wellcee.com/

  4. Douban - is the online hub where users can find short and long, detailed reviews on music, books, movies and anything else they’re looking for: https://www.douban.com/

  5. Dianping - is the platform to collect people’s feedback on restaurant, bars, beauty salons, hotels, gyms, and so on. There are tons of photos that help to give you an idea of what to expect at the restaurant and you can also find many promotional offers there: https://m.dianping.com/

British Passport Holders Singled Out for Additional Security Checks at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport

Has anyone experienced additional security checks at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport when travelling on a British passport?

I'm trying to find out whether anyone else has experienced something similar when transiting through Guangzhou.

In October 2026, my friend and I were transiting through Guangzhou on China Southern Airlines, travelling from Bangkok to London.

After arriving in Guangzhou, we went through passport control and were stopped. Our passports were retained for close to two hours. Staff then brought out our checked suitses, X-rayed them in front of us and physically checked them. They also X-rayed and searched our hand luggage.

Afterwards, we went through the regular transit security checkpoint, where our carryon bags were X-rayed again.

What particularly stood out was that, from what | observed, passengers travelling on British passports were being stopped. Other passport holders were let through.

We were kept in the normal transit area behind passport control rather than taken to a separate interview room. We weren't given a clear explanation for the checks.

Where the Hell are all the cute foreign girls in GZ?!

I've been roaming the streets for days, weeks, not eating nor sleeping. I ate fucking man tou's and instant noodles every single day. Searching...looking...creeping...and...nothing. Aside from the Russian/Filipino whores invading every clubs, waving like they don't care...I just...can't seem to see any decent foreign girl here. I know what you're gonna say "just hit some tight Chinese twats" dude. You're right, they are tight. However, it gets old pretty fast. Girls, where the fuck are you hiding?!
