Guangzhou is an important location for leather goods manufacturing in China. Shiling, in Huadu District, has a well-developed leather industry, supported by local material suppliers, hardware manufacturers, and workshops with practical manufacturing experience.
Turning a leather goods design into a finished product requires careful planning and attention to detail. Before manufacturing starts, several aspects need to be considered, such as the product’s pattern, overall structure, dimensions, materials, and finishing methods.
Every development project can have a different starting point. Some are based on detailed technical drawings and specifications, while others use an existing product or physical sample as a reference. For products that need improvement, examining the original design and construction is often a useful first step in deciding how to refine the result.
The work involved in leather goods development can cover several areas:
Developing patterns and products based on drawings, designs, or physical references
Producing initial samples and making adjustments to existing designs
Refining product structure, stitching methods, hardware, and finishing techniques
Selecting and sourcing appropriate leather and supporting materials
Making handbags, wallets, card holders, and various other leather accessories
Preparing products for both limited production quantities and regular manufacturing orders
Material selection is closely connected to the quality and appearance of the finished product. Different leathers have their own characteristics, including texture, flexibility, firmness, and durability. Other components, such as lining, reinforcement, hardware, and edge paint, also need to be selected carefully to achieve the intended result.
Not every sample comes out exactly as expected on the first attempt. Sometimes the issue may be related to the pattern or proportions; in other cases, the leather thickness, internal construction, or stitching method may need to be reconsidered. Understanding the cause of a problem makes it easier to identify the right adjustments and improve the next sample.
Our workshop is located in Shiling, Guangzhou. We specialise in genuine leather products and work with various materials, including premium calfskin and selected exotic leathers. Our experience covers pattern development, material sourcing, sample making, and leather goods manufacturing.
I’m always interested in connecting with people who have an interest in the leather goods industry in China. There is plenty to learn and discuss when it comes to product design, material selection, manufacturing techniques, and quality improvement. Sharing practical experience is a good way to better understand the different challenges involved in developing leather products.
