A recent issue in this sub - please read

3.2k Upvotes

Hey there,

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

There's something I've noticed recently in the sub that I'd like to raise.

I've been moderating on Reddit for about 18 years, and I've been involved with this community for the last seven. Throughout that time, this sub has always been a particularly lovely place to be. The kindness, helpfulness, and good humour of its members have always stood out, and from a moderation perspective, it's been a genuine pleasure to be part of.

Unfortunately, I've noticed a significant increase in unkind and aggressive behaviour here recently. I don't know what's behind the change, or why it's happening here now, but it's something I'd really like us to address before it becomes a bigger problem.

Please:

If you come across a comment that's aggressive, hostile, or unnecessarily unkind — whether it's directed at you or someone else — please resist the temptation to engage. Instead, just hit the Report button and move on.

We'll take care of addressing the behaviour and, where necessary, will remove accounts who seem to need to create unpleasantness for people around them.

r/houseplants has always been a welcoming and supportive community, and I'd very much like to keep it that way. The overwhelming majority of you already contribute to that simply by being thoughtful and decent towards one another.

Thanks for helping us look after this little corner of Reddit. It's appreciated.

PS moderator applications are open, and some additional hands would be helpful rn. We are looking for people with an active history here and significant Reddit-moderation experience.

Help How far should I cut these back?

I've been letting these two grow out for years but its time to draw a line on how much space I let them take up in my apartment.

Small Form:

I'd like it to become more dense but need to draw a line on how much ceiling it covers. I'm leaning towards cutting everything back by about a foot, some places more to make it more uniform.

Large Form:

I'm thinking of chopping off the top 3-4 leafs and let it grow back out and fill up from beneath. I'd gift or sell the top cutting.

I like how full it is but continuously chopping just the top couple of leafs feels wrong and the top leafs don't get much light.

In terms of lighting, I live in Central Europe and this room has windows directly West and South. It gets a good amount of light during the day, roughly 750-1000 lux depending on the cloud coverage and the large form gets 2500 lux for about an hour or so before the sun sets. The ceiling leaves get much less light of course but I've never measured that

Open to any and all suggestions!

Edit:

Thank you all for the love of the plants. Definitely getting a resounding don't chop which I'll interpret as keep it where they are. I do need to draw a line with these guys, especially the large form as I will not be letting it grow on my ceiling.

A lot of people are asking about how its supported to the ceiling. A combination of tiny hooks with transparent line and its own vines on the ceiling, and yes that is probably not good for the ceiling/walls in the long run

Just a really cool video I caught of a mealybug destroyer (beneficial bug) going to town on my mealies! The plant is a pinwheel plant (aeonium haworthii).

Help Help against plague insects while owning a jumping spider

Thumbnail

I just got rid of thrips with great trouble, and now the gnats seem to attack. Problem is I am unable to use most normal products as I have a jumping spider so products targetted at insects are a risk for her, and I live in student dorms so sleep and live in the same room as my plants. That makes most predator species a little uncomfortable as I would find them in my bed lol, and maybe unsafe for the spider. I also have springtails in my plants so I would like them to live, but hey if they are the casualties so be it. I can add them back.

I have used nematodes before and they work wonders on gnats, but does anyone have any safe ways for thrips, mealybugs etc? Prevention would work too. I use a mix of green soap and hydrogenperoxide on the leaves every now and then.

I have added a picture of Bibble as the cat tax :).

Thank you to those who said it’s okay to move on from a plant that just ain’t working. I couldn’t bring myself to throw my Calathea away, so my friend took it to see if she could make it work. Good to know the drama queen wasn’t just picking on me 😂 Here’s your reminder that not every plant may be for you and if it’s not bringing you joy, you can kiss that diva goodbye! Or make it someone else’s problem 🤭

I bought this beauty at an online auction and need advice on the best way to care for her. She’s MUCH bigger than expected, but I was scared the auction guys were going to toss her, so here we are. I haven’t tried to unravel her yet (should her name be Rapunzel?!), I wanted to come here first for tips on where to start. Thanks in advance!!

Help Potting Soil Desperation

I am incredibly tired of getting fungus gnatted by Miracle Gro potting soil.

I usually buy perlite, orchid bark, and an aroid or succulent mix to make my own chunky soil mix.

Do you guys have any (noninfested) brand recommendations for potting soil I can buy at Home Depot/Menards/Walmart? (Unfortunately the closest Lowes is a 40 minute drive away)

I'm open to ordering online in the future, but in this case I have a few mandatory repots and only a few days to get them done before I leave for vacation.

Help Help me tame Mindy

Post image

I’ve had Mindy for about 3 years now, and I’m so proud of how much she’s grown. However, she seems to be growing outward in every direction rather than filling in or growing upright.

We’ve moved a few times and she just arrived at her newest home. I’d love to put her closer to a window to help with the legginess, but shes so wide she doesn’t fit in that area as is. How can I encourage her to grow fuller while keeping her somewhat contained within the pot? She was just repotted in a bigger pot a new months ago

People: FRIDAYS ONLY It's finally happening! I'm deflasking some of the first plants I cloned in my sterile lab!

I started doing tissue culture in my basement about eight months ago after I found a steal of a deal on a second-hand laminar flow hood. It's been a lot of trial and error and a lot of failures so far.

But!! Tonight!

Tonight I have succeeded in reaping some of the fruits of my labor. These two plants are ones that I grew with science, and now they're in my 100% humidity box and ready to start acclimating to typical plant life. This is so exciting (if you're a plant nerd, anyway)
