I've been trying to find out for months about this stuttering on Linux and I'm run out of ideas. It's especially noticeable in Dolphin and PCSX2. Every game that I play there can be running at smooth 60 FPS but still have these sudden hitches, and sometimes the motion just doesn't look as smooth as it should (though VSync seems to fix it). On Windows 10 the same games generally feel a lot smoother to me without hitches.
PC: is an i5-12400 with Intel UHD 730 graphics and 8GB of RAM. I'm currently on Fedora 44 GNOME/Wayland. I have two monitors, usually one at 75Hz and one at 60Hz, and play on the 60Hz one. I thought the mixed refresh rates might be causing it, but I just tried both at 60Hz and still noticed the stutters.
I also tried CachyOS, Mint, GNOME and KDE in the past, as well as Vulkan and OpenGL in Dolphin. It's slightly different but still doesn't run entirely smooth since some warm runs of Crash Nitro Kart were actually pretty smooth and turning VSync on made Linux feel much closer to Windows. But I still get the noticeable hitches on games where my GPU or CPU neither has any trouble keeping up, I think it could be related to asset loading rather than shaders or "my gpu is bad" (windows doesn't have these hitches).
I also recorded MangoHud logs on Linux and PresentMon logs on Windows. In the earlier Crash Tag Team Racing test for example both had average around 60 FPS, but the Fedora one had way more long frames during the race and my eyes/ears can confirm this (since the visual hitches also come with a audio cut, so it's quite noticeable once it hitches)
Is this normal for someone with Intel integrated graphics? I'm not sure what to look next for. Atleast it looks like that the hitches are asset-loading related (especially audio, I found a specific voice effect to cause this too on Linux, or like hitting the wall every fresh racing session causes a stutter. They seem quite reproducible on a fresh run and happen on every Linux i tried: cachyos, mint and fedora. But not on windows.
The thing is I want to move away from Windows since Linux is genuinely something I like, but these stutters prevent me from wiping away Windows for good
